Mission Statement*
• To build a community that fosters diversity through support, unity,
and guidance within Purdue Teacher Education Program
• To develop strategies that will assist in the recruitment and
retention of underrepresented students in Teacher Education
• To create awareness and promote inclusion through strategic
planning and partnerships on various programs that enhance the
climate related to diversity for students, faculty, and staff

Fall 2015 Enrollment Overview
• During Fall 2015, underrepresented minorities (URM) accounted for 8.35% of
COE’s total undergraduate population
• Fall 2015 COE URM enrollment (43) was slightly higher than Fall 2014 (37)
• Increase in COE URM enrollment/retention compared to total enrollment numbers
• Lowest URM enrollment total since Fall 2008
• 8.66% of students enrolled in a Teacher Education Program identified as URM
• Increase in TEP URM enrollment compared to FALL 2014 (61)

• Coordinated tutoring services for students enrolled in MA13700, MA13800,
and MA13900
• Individual tutoring

Students in Education Enhancing Diversity
S.E.E.D. serves as a student organization which supports and cultivates diversity within Teacher
Education. S.E.E.D. places emphasis on recruiting underrepresented students and highlighting the
importance of exposure to and understanding of diversity present in today’s K-12 classroom.
Program Overview

• Membership increased to 22 members
• Membership now includes teacher education majors who do not identify as an underrepresent
minority
• Attended Indianapolis Alliance of Black School Educators Forum (November 2015)
• Celebrated graduating seniors- S. Irvin, E. Sura
• Increased programming efforts to all teacher education majors:
• TRUE LIFE: I’m a Student Teacher
• Social Justice Issues in K-12 education
• Completed Annual Service Project: BackPack Reloaded @ Lafayette Urban Ministry (January 2016)
• Delivered $900 worth of back packs and school supplies
• Purdue University Engagement grant
• Trip to DuSable Museum of African American History (February 2016)
• Jasmine Hawthorne was the recipient of the “Dr. Dorothy Reed Scholarship” (2016)
Fall 2015 & Spring 2016 Highlights
BoilerMENTOR Program
The BoilerMENTOR program began in 2014 as a university-wide peer mentoring program for
first-year students from historically underrepresented backgrounds. Mentees are paired with an
upperclassmen mentor in their respective college. The peer mentoring relationship includes a
series of support initiatives to assist incoming students in achieving their academic goals,
identifying institutional support resources, and becoming more acclimated with life at Purdue.
BoilerMENTOR Program
• Implemented the BoilerMENTOR program in the College of Education Fall 2015
• Collaboration with Division of Diversity and Inclusion
• Six (6) first-year URM students were paired among 3 BoilerMentors
• 5 first-year URM students were retained in COE
• 1 student switched majors
• Issues with mentor consistency
• Mentor and mentees were not meeting
• Program vision was not clear

COMMITTEE OVERVIEW
We are committed to enhancing diversity by fostering partnerships, leaderships, awareness and
communication for students, faculty and staff in the College of Education (COE) and Teacher Education
at Purdue. We are dedicated to celebrating and understanding differences and similarities; providing
educational opportunities that are inclusive and promote respect among traditionally under-represented
groups; and addressing issues of social inequity by promoting social justice.
Possible Activities & Strategies:
• Act as an advisory committee for new program and initiative development for the Office of Diversity
Initiatives
• Make recommendations for possible recruitment and retention efforts for underrepresented
undergraduates and graduates
• Make recommendations for opportunities to develop diversity awareness among students, faculty
and staff
• Make recommendations regarding Diversity Speaker Series and possible speakers
• Assist with the selection of the Holmes Scholars

AACTE HOLMES SCHOLARS PROGRAM
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Established in 1991, the AACTE Holmes Scholars Program consists of doctoral students from
traditionally underrepresented backgrounds pursuing careers in education at AACTE member
institutions. The goal of the program is to offer mentorship, peer support, professional
development, and rich scholarly experiences to Scholars, who in turn, become an outstanding pool
of candidates for future faculty and leadership positions.

• Appointed LaMarcus Hall as Holmes Scholar (Aug. 2015)
• Holmes Scholar Hall attended AACTE 2016- Vegas, NV (Feb. 2016)
• Holmes Scholars Hall served on COE Equity and Diversity Committee
• Program overhaul began late Spring 2016
• Cohort intake model- Adeoye & Iseminger appointed as incoming scholars
