RegisteredApprenticeship Program

RAP students are both full-time students and registered apprentices, dividing their time between an approved work site and their high school studies. They take regular courses such as English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Math in order to earn their Alberta High School Diploma or Certificate of Achievement. Students interested in RAP will need to complete HCS3000 and for some placements students will also need to complete HCS3010. Students are also encouraged to have a class 5 drivers licence.

Work Experience

Students in work experience can not be awarded credits without monthly proof

of hours worked. Students need to provide proof of hours worked by dropping off monthly / weekly pay stubs (prefered method) or by completing purple monthly forms. Students doing work experience will need to complete HCS3000 before they can enroll.

DutiesCathodic protection is a technique used to control corrosion of metal surfaces in structures that are in contact with soil or water, including buildings, pipelines and bridges. Cathodic protection technicians work on a variety of projects, installing, commissioning, monitoring, evaluating, maintaining, repairing and decommissioning cathodic protection systems. There are two types of cathodic protection systems - galvanic and impressed current. Structures protected by cathodic protection systems include steel water lines, oil and gas pipelines, well casings, underground storage tanks and metal reinforcement bars in concrete buildings and bridges.

iA cathodic protection technician - level one must:-prepare for planned cathodic protection projects,-perform lockout and tag out procedures,-operate and use testing equipment,-perform troubleshooting on cathodic protection systems, conduct function tests,-gather data, prepare records and reports,-install, maintain and repair components of a cathodic protection system.

Although salaries vary, cathodic protection technicians - level one can earn an average of $25 - $40 per hour, plus benefits and $35 - $55 per hour for level two, plus benefits.

Some might say that time goes quick when you get older, but I say it is because life is exciting and busy. What makes it busy you ask? We have close to 200 Holy Spirit students enrolled in our off campus programs not to mention the many who are lucky to be involved in or exposed to the numerous post secondary tours, EPIC, Iron workers camp, and the many presentations. Of course all this could not happen without the wonderful off campus crew. There is also many

organization that we work with that help provide Holy Spirit students with opportunity ; Careers The Next Generation, Career Transitions, and BTEST to name just a few.. so thank you to those organizations as well. I would also like to give a big thank you to all our high schools. This program would not be as successful without their help and support especially in the area of delivering HSC3000 (pre-requisite course needed to complete RAP and work experience).

Holy Spirit Off Campus is lucky to have a partnership with Careers the Next Generation. CAREERS: The Next Generation continues to meet the demand through student-focused, industry community partnerships providing career Awareness, Exploration, and Experience opportunities to youth. Last year they reached over 47,000 students in Alberta encouraging them to engage in learning, stay in school and discover a successful career in demand. CAREERS have seen reinvestment in existing infrastructure, programs, and relationships while forging new opportunities for the future. They have embraced this strategy and, thanks in no small part to our 816 employers,

saw a 23 percent increase in internship participation by Indigenous youth and a 16 percent increase in internship participation by young women in non-traditional trades. Locally, Saroeun Keuth Ray (field director for Calgary south) has spent countless hours presenting to our students about RAP, organizing many RAP events, and negotiating RAP placements with many local, provincial, and national businesses that include Fortis Alberta, and The City of Lethbridge. Saroeun also works very closely with Blood Tribe Employment and Service Training to provide employment opportunity to our Indigenous Students.

Career the next generationour partnerS

did you knoW......

Have you ever wondered what jobs will be in demand in Canada and why? Let me give you a hint, baby boomers make up Canada’s largest demographic group, and they are starting to retire. According to www.trade-schools.net, in 2015, the baby boomer generation made up 27 percent of the population. At that point, only 18 percent of baby boomers had reached the age of 65. That means the retirement surge has barely started. As a result, many fantastic job opportunities could become available for younger Canadians. Have you guessed what the number one job in demand is yet? Well if you said Registered Nurse you would be correct. According to trade-schools.net RNs are needed in every province and territory. RNs are increasingly important in Canada’s small, rural towns and remote communities. In areas where there is no or limited access to general physicians and family doctors, RNs often take on roles as primary care providers. So this job is certainly an option that can offer a lot of opportunity in almost every corner of the country.Total job openings—139,700
