President’s Message 29

th March.

The Red Room was really cool! Who knew Griffith University had such treasures tucked away? I must compliment Allan Thompson, Regina Tucker and the Satellite Club members for a very polished and professional night with gourmet finger food, excellent service and a sprinkle of fun. Professor Suresh Mahalingham spoke about a number of viruses including the Zika in a way that was easy to understand; a gift in itself. Our visit to the Red Room was a Rotary meeting with a difference. In the most recent Presidents’ Update I noted that the average Rotary Club membership in Australia is 26.6. With 52 active members (including the Satellite Club), we are one of the biggest. However there are four Clubs of 100 members and the largest is in Melbourne with more than 200 Rotarians. Lunches for 8 are on Sunday the 10

th of April. I have enough hosts, but not all members have indicated if they can

attend or wish to apologize. Can you please let me know either way by Friday the 1st of April?

Next week we are back at the Golf Club to hear about DGE Michael Irving’s plans for his year as District Governor. Michael has some new innovations that I am sure members will find interesting.

Lea Rickwood The very kissable parasite (you had to be there).

TREASURER’S REPORT Merv Powell NOTE: All members who fail to send in an apology for non-attendance will be charged as per our club policy, which was agreed by all members at previous club assemblies. Attendance; 20 members, 8 Visiting Rotarians, 10 Satellite club members, 1 club guest, 12 partners and visitors. Total 51. . ORDER OF MEETING Date 29th March, 2016 at 18:15 hrs

RED ZONE ROOM at GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY

CHAIR Allan Thompson called the meeting to order and invited everyone to join in reciting the 4 way test. He then proposes a toast to the Queen and the people of Australia CHAIR Alan Thompson Invited President Lea to welcome everyone including guests and guest speaker Professor Suresh Mahalingham, Then the Chair also invited Danielle Stanisic to welcome all on behalf of the Satellite Club Daniel Stanisic gave the Rotary Minute on the Satellite Club. This club currently concentrates on raising funds to provide support to women & children who escaped from domestic violence situations; they aim and so far manage 1 hamper per week. Having done this for a while now, they advised that they were about to gain a new member as a result, being one of the beneficiaries of this program. Emilie Kuntz - Presentation on the RED ZONE The Red Zone opened in June 2015 and is open on week days from 10:00 to 16:00hrs. It is also available for functions. They receive many visitors who enjoy the interactive facilities in this room. Touch screens reveal a lot of information and fun based on latest technology. Emilie Kuntz demonstrated how the various screens and facilities function to the delight of the attendees. Some of the facilities were:

Take Stock of yourself (financial);

Virtual Ambulance;

An energy generating bike which David Randal worked well;

The “Sand pit” made from kinetic sand where one could see the climatic change following a topographic change; and

The music wall, great fun! REFRESHMENTS – drinks and delicious finger food were served, including 1 round of free drinks! CHAIR Allan Thompson invited Professor Suresh Mahalingham to speak on the ZIKA Virus. Suresh Mahalingham is a professor of Virology and NHMRC Senior Fellow of Griffith University, Australia heading the Institute of Glycomics there. In his very passionate and informative presentation the professor spoke about viruses in general and why most can be successfully treated and the question why some viruses (globally) are so difficult to concur. He gave us a brief history on viruses showing what damage these viruses have done, the enormous carnage they caused and how some were rather mild and uneventful. He spoke of the nature of viruses as parasites by using the cellular machinery for protein synthesis, reproduction thereby killing the cell when budding. Many slides showed what viruses looked like and their terrible or mild effect on patients. Some viruses like the Ebola or the influenza viruses looked rather interesting… even beautiful in the professor’s eyes. Professor Suresh Mahalingham advised that the Zika virus is still being researched and more information will be revealed in 2-3 months. It is a less dangerous virus, i.e. not death causing, just mild temperature, a rash that takes about 9 days to show and a week to heal up. There is little known about it due to it not being dangerous. It needs a particular cell protein, i.e. cells of lungs for instance to develop. The main reason for the researchers to continue is that when pregnant women become infected the likelihood for their baby to be deformed is rather high. Professor Suresh Mahalingham has listed a number of mosquito borne pathogens that enter via stings (blood) saliva, etc., causing

Malaria - parasites

Dangue fever – globally 20 million cases P.A. of which 24,000 are fatal

West Nile virus

Zika Virus - discovered in 1947 in Uganda (Monkey Virus)rapidly spreading in the Americas;

Page 4: of the ROTARY CLUB OF SOUTHPORTclubrunner.blob.core.windows.net/00000007970/en-au/files/... · 2016-04-10 · 8 April 08 Sahlee O 5 April Helena K Rotary Carousel Funds Year 1/7/15

5 April 2016 4

Chikungunya virus – causes fever and debilitating pain and is spreading quite rapidly in NY & NJ., In Australia there are 41 known cases 7 of which are in Queensland;

Ross River virus

Yellow Fever Virus – use of DDT eradicated the virus, but when DDT was no longer allowed the virus came back.

Professor Suresh Mahalingham also gave us a brief history of the various vaccinations that were created since the earlier 20th century to now and their effectiveness. THANKS - Thanks and presentation of Literacy Kit certificate was conferred by Rebecca Sanders who acknowledged the Professor for his work and dedication. CHAIR Allan Thompson Invited President Lea to close meeting. President Lea closed the meeting thanking our hosts, the presenters and the members.

Thoughts for the week.

My dentistry patients are called and reminded the day before their scheduled appointments. During an

office visit, one man was in an especially good humor and explained why. “My staff kids me about the

high opinion I have of myself,” he said. “Yesterday your receptionist left a message that had them in

stitches.”

He related the memo his secretary had handed him: “Your crown is ready.”

Page 10: of the ROTARY CLUB OF SOUTHPORTclubrunner.blob.core.windows.net/00000007970/en-au/files/... · 2016-04-10 · 8 April 08 Sahlee O 5 April Helena K Rotary Carousel Funds Year 1/7/15

5 April 2016 10

My mother taught for 11 years at a day-care center. One winter afternoon she was trying to show a young

boy how to zip up his coat. “The secret,” Mom said, “is to get this piece of the zipper to fit in the other side

before you try to zip it up.”

After struggling with the zipper for several minutes, the boy sighed and said, “Why does it have to be a

secret?”

Our manager at the restaurant where I worked was a much beloved, jovial man. But there was one subject

you didn’t dare discuss in front of him — his height. Or, should I say, his lack of it. One day, he stormed

through the door and announced angrily, “Someone just picked my pocket!” Most of my fellow

waitresses and I were speechless, except for the one who blurted out, “How could anyone stoop so low?”

An economist is someone who liked numbers as a kid but didn't have enough charisma to be

an accountant.

An engineer, a physicist, and a mathematician are shown a pasture with a herd of sheep. They are told to put the sheep inside

the smallest possible amount of fence.

The engineer is first. He herds the sheep into a circle and then puts the fence around them, declaring, "A circle will use the

least fence for a given area, so this is the best solution."

The physicist is next. She creates a circular fence of infinite radius around the sheep, and then draws the fence tight around

the herd, declaring, "This will give the smallest circular fence around the herd."

The mathematician is last. After giving the problem a little thought, he puts a small fence around himself and declares, "I

define myself to be on the outside!"
