EDITOR’S NOTE

2017 is a significant year for Malaysia as it marks the centennial celebration of Malaysian palm oil. On 18 May 1917, Mr Henri Fauconnier decided to replace an unsuccessful coffee plantation at the Tennamaram Estate in Batang Berjuntai (now known as Bestari Jaya) with commercial oil palm planting. His entrepreneurial act laid the foundation for the successful growth of the Malaysian oil palm industry.

Similarly, the Founder and Executive Chairman of IOI Group (IOI) Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Shin Cheng envisioned the growth potential of a declining palm oil industry back in the 1980s. He said: “Today sunset, tomorrow sunrise.” Today, IOI is one of the largest plantation companies since it started from zero base in 1983 as a pioneer home grown plantation company. Indeed, it is apt for our Cover Feature to celebrate the illustrious 100-year journey of the Malaysian palm oil industry and the equally outstanding journey of IOI as we look forward to a promising future of palm oil for the next 100 years and more.

Another success worthy of celebration is IOI Properties Group Berhad’s (IOIPG) BCI Asia Award 2017 which has been clinched for seven consecutive years (page 11). IOIPG’s string of success can be further seen in IOIPG’s collaboration with London-listed Hongkong Land to co-develop the Central Boulevard land in Singapore (page 11). As IOIPG continues to reach new heights to become the property developer of choice, it also announced the appointment of IOIPG Senior General Manager (Marketing and Business Development) Ms Lee Yoke Har to the Board of Directors of IOIPG effective 1 July 2017.

This year also marks IOI Loders Croklaan Asia’s (IOILC Asia) 40th

anniversary since it started operating in 1977 (page 21). A memorable celebration was held in appreciation of the commitment and loyalty of its employees under a people-focused approach. In fact, IOILC Asia recently recorded a milestone by successfully achieving its lofty goal of delivering 11,000 metric tonnes of specialty fats and oils for the third time.

Palm Garden Golf Club (PGGC) also celebrated its fifth anniversary in style as it welcomed over 100 golfers onto its fairways for a swinging time on 27 April 2017 (page 28). It was an eventful occasion, as two days earlier, the award-winning PGGC was recognised as a Superbrand of Malaysia.

Lastly, may we cherish our roots and look ahead to a bright journey of hope and optimism as we celebrate our many achievements and anniversaries.

Leading a Continuous JourneyThe growth of palm oil spearheaded the birth and rise of many plantation groups including IOI Group (IOI) whose growth is synonymous with the stellar growth of Malaysia’s oil palm industry. Indeed, the many benefits of palm oil are echoed by the Founder and Executive Chairman of IOI Group Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Shin Cheng (centre in pix): “Oil palm is something very close to my heart and also my first love because I feel that it is something very sustainable and versatile, as well as very useful to mankind. It can be used for so many purposes; both edible and non-edible. Palm oil’s success as a crop and commodity product cannot be disputed.”

Set up in 1982, IOI has grown to become one of the leading integrated palm oil players in Malaysia with global presence. IOI’s emphasis on efficiency has led to a yearly production of about 2.6 million tonnes of palm oil, contributing to 18% of Malaysia’s total output.

A founding member of the RSPO, IOI has moved in line with the nation’s plans and RSPO-certified all its existing plantations in 2013. In 2016, IOI launched its Sustainable Palm Oil Policy (SPOP) alongside a comprehensive Sustainability Implementation Plan (SIP). IOI is committed to operate on its NDPE (No Deforestation, No Peat, and No Exploitation) platform and excel as a leader that integrates the highest sustainability standards into its business practices. IOI also further enhanced its stakeholder engagement and constantly updates stakeholders on the progress of its sustainability efforts.

Committing toResilience and ProgressOne of the main issues confronting the Malaysian palm oil industry is the ongoing anti-palm oil movement and campaigns to smear the true facts about palm oil and impede the growth of palm oil through misguided allegations on how palm oil endangers the environment through deforestation and is a detriment to health. It is imperative that the image of palm oil is corrected through awareness of palm oil benefits and its various economic and technological advantages and environmental sustainability.

Besides the anti-palm oil movements, other persistent challenges continue to plague the palm oil industry such as adverse weather conditions that cause stagnant yields and the shortage of foreign

workers. IOI is determined to overcome the obstacles and prevail as a leading corporation in its core businesses.

IOI Corporation Berhad Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Lee Yeow Chor emphasised the need to formulate

and implement labour-saving initiatives in IOI’s plantations through mechanisation and an innovative mindset in estate practices. IOI is also widening its scope of concern for workers’ welfare by making further enhanced commitments in the Human Rights and Workplace area in its SPOP to ease recruitment, alleviate trafficking issues and foster fair employment, among others.

Despite the challenges, Tan Sri Dato’ Lee is confident of the future of palm oil: “I am very optimistic about the future of palm oil. It will be good for the next 100 years

because palm oil is environmentally-friendly, sustainable and very versatile, both for industry

A Growing Future Rooted in SuccessMoving forward, palm oil is set to make further impact in the next 100 years and beyond as palm oil is set to become an integral part of the country’s economy. Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong expressed his confidence: “I foresee a very bright future for palm oil. It is not a sunset industry; it is the future of the country.”

Journey of the Malaysian Palm Oil IndustryThe  oil palm  (Elaeis guineensis) originated  from West  Africa where it has been traditionally grown as a subsistence crop and used widely as cooking oil. The development of oil palm as a plantation crop in Malaysia began when the first commercial scale plantation in Malaysia was founded in 1917 by a Frenchman named Mr Henry Fauconnier who planted oil palm seeds at Tennamaran Estate in Batang Berjuntai in Selangor.

The palm oil industry has witnessed a catalytic growth over the past 100 years since its inception, and has become a main pillar of Malaysia’s economy, socio-development, political stability and progress. Malaysia is currently the second largest producer of palm oil in the world and accounts for 39% of world production and 44% of world exports. In 2016, Malaysia produced 29.4% of the global palm oil output on a mere 0.1% of global agricultural land, and exported RM64.58 billion worth of palm oil products which is equivalent to 6% of Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Today, palm oil is the most widely consumed vegetable oil and the most efficient oil crop in the world. Permeating every part of our lives, it has thrived from being a mere cooking oil to a commodity with value-added uses found in our daily food and household products such as margarine, chocolate, ice-cream, soaps, cosmetics, toiletries, detergent and more.

The importance of palm oil was affirmed after it was identified as a National Key Economic Area (NKEA) in 2010 to drive the nation’s economy. Recently, RM50 million has been allocated in 2017 by the government to make Malaysian palm oil among the safest and most nutritious oils globally.

Following the establishment of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in 2004 to promote the growth and use of sustainable palm oil, the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) was created in 2013 for mandatory compliance by 2019 to enable better market access for Malaysian palm-based products as well as to provide a credible and traceable platform for plantation companies to demonstrate their sustainability efforts and good agricultural practices.

IOI Corporation Berhad (IOIC) posted a profit before taxation (PBT) of RM392 million for the third quarter ended 31 March 2017 (Q3 FY2017) as

compared to a PBT of RM836.7 million a year ago (Q3 FY2016). The lower PBT is due mainly to lower net foreign currency translation gain on foreign currency denominated borrowings and lower fair value gain on derivative financial instruments from the resource-based manufacturing division.

The plantation division’s Q3 FY2017 profit increased by 94% to RM258.9 million as compared to RM133.6 million in Q3 FY2016 due mainly to higher crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel (PK) prices realised as well as higher fresh fruit bunches (FFB) production. Q3 FY2017’s average CPO price realised was RM3,118/MT against last year’s RM2,289/MT whereas PK price was RM3,211/MT against RM1,915/MT in Q3 FY2016.

As for the resource-based manufacturing division, it posted a lower profit of RM74.3 million as compared to RM305.1 million in Q3 FY2016. Excluding the fair value gain on derivative financial instruments, the Q3

FY2017’s underlying profit of RM19.8 million is 84% lower

than Q3 FY2016’s RM120.2 million due

mainly to lower sales volume from all the

sub-segments and lower margin derived from the

refining and oleochemical and sub-segments.

As a continuous effort to engage stakeholders in its sustainability journey, IOI Group (IOI) has further revised its Sustainability

Palm Oil Policy (SPOP) alongside a comprehensive Sustainability Implementation Plan (SIP) to reflect its serious intent towards sustainability and sustainability practices.

IOI’s stronger commitment to sustainability will serve to both enhance field implementation and ensure ongoing best practice management in the palm oil supply chain. These new commitments include independent third-party verification of IOI’s progress towards SPOP implementation, and more stringent peatland management practices in its Indonesian plantations aligned with the Palm Oil Innovation Group’s standards, an initiative that strives to adopt sustainably responsible palm oil production practices globally. Further enhanced commitments in the area of Human Rights and Workplace have also been made.

On top of that, Greenpeace announced their decision to suspend their campaign against IOI and re-engage with IOI on 28 April 2017 as a result of IOI’s progress on sustainability across its supply chain. IOI’s proactive measures and progress were applauded and acknowledged by Greenpeace, and its Indonesian Forests Campaign Global Head Mr Kiki Taufik said: “IOI has come a long way in the past 12 months, and has now started taking meaningful action to eliminate forest destruction and human rights abuses from its

The Sustainable Palm Oil (SPO) Department of IOI Sandakan Region organised a three-day training course that included

the participation of environmental liaison officers and patrollers to enhance everyone’s knowledge and skills in conducting on-site patrolling primarily on bird and wildlife species identification.

The guest speaker from the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) of Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) conducted the course in two sessions. 65 participants attended the sessions from 17 to 22 April 2017 at the Pamol Club and Training School respectively. Each session consisted of a classroom lecture, fieldwork visit and basic bird species identification test where the highest mark achiever was presented with a special gift from RDC and SFD. Each participant also received a certificate in recognition of the dedication to learn and complete the course.

All the participants would now be aware of the diverse species of birds and wildlife that exist in the vast plantation area where they are based, and be equipped with adequate knowledge to make sustainability a norm in their working lives.

The Sustainable Palm Oil (SPO) Department of IOI Sandakan Region invited the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID)

Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to conduct a training on the management of stream and irrigation particularly at oil palm estates in compliance with the DID guidelines and the Sabah Water Resources Enactment 1998.

A three-hour comprehensive training held by Water Resources Management Unit Senior Assistant Director Mr Miklin Ationg was a good platform for estates and mills’ operating unit heads to examine matters such as stream identification and sustainable management practices to maintain a buffer zone as well as irrigation related to mill operations.

On 17 May 2017, a two-year-old baby orangutan believed to have escaped from a nearby forest reserve in search of food

and a new secondary habitat, was rescued and handed over by Sugut Estate Manager Mr Abu Bakar bin Md. Zain to the Sabah’s Wildlife Rescue Unit which would then deliver the rescued orangutan to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre (SOURC) Sandakan for proper care by the experts.

The baby orangutan was abandoned at an area in Sugut Estate and was found by estate workers. Sightings of orangutans are quite common in the estate which is surrounded by other neighbouring oil palm plantation companies and villages. Wildlife conservation and protection are key priorities of IOI Group which is committed to no deforestation, no planting on peat and zero burning.

Meanwhile, IOI Properties Group Berhad (IOIPG) recorded revenue of RM895.8 million in Q3 FY2017 which is 39% higher than Q3 FY2016. After excluding a one-off additional buyer stamp duty with interest (ABSD) incurred for the Trilinq project in Singapore and the fair value gain on investment properties, the operating profit of RM125.0 million is 58% higher than Q3 FY2016.

The property development division recorded RM777.2 million revenue and RM132.1 million operating profit in Q3 FY2017 compared to RM541.1 million and RM244.5 million in Q3 FY2016 due to higher revenue from its three divisions. The property development division saw a 44% increase in revenue due to higher sales take-up rate for the Trilinq project coupled with advanced progress work. Sales from IOI Resort City, Warisan Puteri (Sepang) and D3 Residence in Xiamen, the People’s Republic of China also registered favourable take-up rates. The property investment division recorded an 8% increase in revenue to RM75.9 million due to an increase in average occupancy and rental rates for both retail and office segments. The leisure and hospitality division also witnessed a revenue increase of RM11.3 million to RM40.9 million that is mainly derived from the recently opened Le Méridien Putrajaya.

Going forward, IOIC expects the FFB production to continue to increase in the next quarter from the current seasonal low. The resource-based manufacturing division is expected to perform better due to better margins in the fourth quarter. IOIPG also expects to perform satisfactorily for the remaining financial period in view of its sizable landbank in strategic locations locally and internationally, coupled with a strong track record of delivery as well as the adaptability to market demands.

supply chain. There is still a lot of work to be done to clean up the palm oil industry and we expect other traders to respond with action plans of their own.” IOI remains committed to the imp l emen t a t i on of its sustainability policies and believes that its progress in key areas as well as the new commitments and measures will send a strong signal to stakeholders around its desire for continued improvement. IOI will continue to engage stakeholders in its sustainability journey and looks forward to playing a leading role in ensuring sustainable global palm oil supply chains.

The importance of sports cannot be undermined, and in conjunction with Labour’s Day, a Sports Carnival

organised by Segamat Estate and Leepang A Estate were held concurrently in the belief that “a healthy mind lies in a healthy body”.

The carnival which brought together employees and their family members comprised wholesome games such as tug-of-war, inter-divisional football, futsal and sepak takraw matches, coconut bowling, balloon popping and other exciting games. Apart from that, on 17 May 2017, a friendly football match was held between Segamat Estate and Labis Bahru Estate of Kulim Plantation Berhad to encourage a healthy and competitive spirit while building a good relationship among the team players. The Segamat Estate team scored a win and enjoyed a sporting spirit.

Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) is a global non-profit organisation that works with its network of more

than 250 member companies and other partners to build a just and sustainable world. BSR develops sustainable business strategies and solutions through consulting, research and cross-sector collaboration from its offices in Asia, Europe and North America.

From 12 to 16 June 2017, Managers Ms Rosa Kusbiantoro and Ms Jaewon Kim from BSR’s Hong Kong-based office visited IOI Group’s (IOI) Sandakan Regional Office, Luangmanis Estate and Ladang Sabah Palm Oil Mill in Sabah to conduct a BSR field assessment to gather perspectives on the migrant worker management system in Sabah through discussions

and interviews with the management and workers.

Various fundamentals such as stakeholder concerns, non-governmental organisations’ reports and labour-related standards were assessed to formulate a good management system on migrant workers which will include standards, procedures and policies that can be successfully applied and sustained in IOI.

BSR Field Assessment Visit

It is necessary to protect the company’s assets such as the personnel, properties and valuable information in order to

ensure continuity of the business amidst the uncertainty of the world’s safety that is threatened by terrorist attacks on the rise and occasional natural disasters.

A Security Risk Management and Counter Terrorism programme was conducted for IOI Properties Group Berhad’s (IOIPG) Business Unit Heads and Security Managers from 23 to 25 May 2017. The three-day training was led by experienced trainer Tuan Aziz Ariarasa. He has retired after serving 33 years as Assistant Commissioner of Police in the Royal Malaysian Police and was specially trained in the Special Weapons and

Safety & Security against TerrorismTactics (SWAT) to combat urban terrorism by armed mobile communist units during communist insurgency. He has also represented the Royal Malaysia Police in community projects with non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

The participants learnt to identify potential security risks and adopt a risk-based approach in support of the overall business objectives and to minimise the occurrences or effects of events that may negatively affect outcomes of a business.

After the training, respective business units will revise their Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and develop a crisis management plan which will be presented to IOIPG Chief Operating Officer (Property Investment) Mr Cheah Wing Choong for further security enhancements.

Security Risk Management is the process of determining the magnitude of risks and the required actions that should be taken to control the risks. It consists of:

Asset Characterisation – understand and describe the organisation’s assets to protect (physical assets, people and information).

Threat Identification – understand, identify and describe the hazards (threats) involved.

Criticality Analysis – identify the critical processes or functional units that need to be protected to ensure business continuity in the event of any critical situation.

Vulnerability Analysis – analyse the weaknesses in the organisation’s management control systems and security systems that can be exploited by hazards (threats) that can result in loss and damage to the organisation’s assets.

Probability of Occurrence – identify the probability of occurrence of the hazards (threats) to determine the risk level of the said threats.

Mitigation – focus on the actions to be taken to ensure the assets of the organisation are protected from the hazards (threats) to reduce or prevent loss and damage.

Preparedness – form the emergency response, crisis management and business continuity as an effective response to the occurrence of hazards to manage the incident, recover and resume the business.

Employees often think that it is sufficient to do a great job and deliver good results, but as one advances in his or

her career, the need to develop people management skills is crucial as managing and inspiring people require knowledge and competencies which will be effective through practice and experience.

According to recent research, the single most important managerial competency that separates highly effective managers from average ones is coaching. Ms Monique Valcour wrote an article in Harvard Business Review: “You Can’t Be A Great Manager If You’re Not A Good Coach.”

On 3 May 2017, the Corporate Training and Organisational Development Department organised a Coaching the Coach workshop for IOI Corporation Berhad’s (IOIC) senior managers and above to enable them to manage their staff better through effective coaching skills. They were equipped with the GROW coaching model (Goal, Reality, Options and Way Forward) and active listening method with EARS (Encouraging, restAting, Reflecting and Summarising) to enhance their coaching skills.

Following the workshop, a half-day Coaching Process Launch was organised on 18 July 2017 whereby each coach had to bring a coachee as part of the coaching application exercise and commit to coach the coachee for a minimum of three months. Both coach and coachee will discuss the coaching goals during these sessions. Coaches are also free to coach employees from other departments.

One of the key ingredients to successful coaching is for the coach to ask the right questions. A good coach believes that a coachee always has the answer to his or her problems but needs help to discover the answer.

The value of coaching is immense as it will build a stronger bond between team members and support them to take ownership of their own learning and will help them develop the skills they need to perform at their peak. It also feels good to be able to help someone to grow! Ultimately, this programme aspired to build effective managers by instilling a coaching culture to build a compelling workforce within the company.

IOI Properties Group Berhad (IOIPG) signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Hongkong Land International Holdings Ltd (HLK) on 12

June 2017 in Singapore to jointly develop and manage a prime 99-year leasehold land strategically located within Marina Bay and the Central Business District of Singapore.

IOIPG clinched the prime site for RM7.9 billion (S$2.57 billion) in November 2016 through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Wealthy Link Pte Ltd, in a tender that drew seven other bids. IOIPG’s price bid was the highest in absolute dollar quantum as well as per square foot per plot ratio for a Government Land Sale site in Singapore. The site will be developed as a "white" site in which the developers have more autonomy in deciding the use of the site. The scheme envisaged comprises two office towers of approximately 1.26 square feet (sq ft) of leasable space and a small retail podium of approximately 30,000 sq ft.

HLK, a member of the Jardine Matheson Group, is a listed leading property investment, management and development group that owns and manages almost 800,000 sq ft of prime office and luxury retail property in key Asian cities, mainly in Hong Kong and Singapore.

IOI Oleochemical Industries Berhad continued to give back to the community through three thoughtful activities organised by the

Community Service (CS) Department. Throughout April, May and June 2017, CS members and volunteers imparted environmental awareness while providing assistance and support to recipients.

IOI Oleochemical Industries Berhad’s (IOI Oleo) IOI Acidchem Sdn Bhd (IOI Acidchem) and IOI Derichem Sdn Bhd (IOI Derichem) were certified

ISO 50001:2011 by SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd on 9 June 2017.

ISO 50001:2011 is an international standard for energy management system that provides a framework for establishing energy management best practices to enable organisations to improve their energy performance including energy efficiency, use and consumption in a proper and systematic way.

The journey towards the ISO 50001 certification which started in August 2015 involved various initiatives including setting up an Energy Management team to meet regularly to review energy usage and identify opportunities for improvement.

DOING GOOD IN THE COMMUNITY

IMPROVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY WITH ISO 50001Led by IOI Oleo Electrical and Instrument Manager Mr Teoh Kong Tat, the process resulted in the development of several Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs), energy management action plans and targets.

Some energy efficiency outcomes included the installation of energy efficient equipment such as frequency drives, high-efficient air conditioner units and LED light whereas energy saving projects included the upgrading of the air compressor system, vapour absorption chiller and steam recovery system. These energy reviews and EnPIs are the key steps to reduce energy use, save cost and achieve energy objectives and targets.

Certification to ISO 50001 is a new milestone for IOI Acidchem and IOI Derichem to focus on operational excellence and continual improvement.

On 18 May 2017, IOI Loders Croklaan (IOILC) launched a new, next generation lamination shortening designed specifically

for puff pastry applications to provide customers with a market-friendly label, industry-leading lift and flaky texture end product. Palm oil is used to create the non-hydrogenated shortening that is free of partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs).

The SansTrans™ Roll-Rite Puff provides melt-in-your-mouth texture and a clean ingredient statement while offering optimal manufacturing qualities such as excellent resistance to tearing and fine expansion qualities when baking. The result is a product with consistent, uniform layers without compromising dough integrity.

IOI Loders Croklaan Americas Vice-President of Research and Development Dr Linsen Liu said: “The shortening has been

"Go No PHO" Bakery Innovationuniquely formulated and processed to strike a textural balance that delivers maximum functionality and allows for artisanal creativity. We encourage our customers, and those interested in trying the product to visit our Creative Studio to receive hands-on training on how to best use this new innovation.”

IOILC’s range of “Go No PHO” bakery applications is geared to help customers produce PHO-free baked goods without compromising on taste as the industry heads towards a supply chain to eliminate PHOs in line with the US Good and Drug Administration’s ruling that PHOs are no longer fit for human consumption and must be removed from products by June 2018 after losing their GRAS (generally recognised as safe) status.

IOI Loders Croklaan Americas sponsored the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work’s (TODASTW) 24th anniversary on 27 April 2017 where more than

30 volunteers made the day a huge success with the collaboration of all departments.

Designed to be more than a career day, TODASTW is an annual celebration of employers hosting their children at their workplace and goes beyond the average “shadow” an adult.

Celebrated on the fourth Thursday in April in the United States, TODASTW not only exposes girls and boys aged eight to 18 years old to what a parent or mentor does during his/her workday, but also shows them the value of their education as well as helps them discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life. It provides the opportunity to share how they can envision their future and begin steps towards their goals in a hands-on and interactive environment in order to achieve success.

Activities included decorating t-shirts and learning about IOI Loders Croklaan’s products that are made of palm oil. They were given a guided tour of the Creative Studio where they decorated cookies, stuffed cannolis, made chocolates and more.

IOI Loders Croklaan (IOILC) received the Healthy Workplaces Good Practice Awards 2016-2017 on 26 April 2017 at Valleta, Malta in recognition

of its high level of employee participation. The 2016-2017 awards, organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA), celebrates successful and innovative contributions to workplace safety and health for workers of all ages. IOILC’s project teams were created for three focus areas: shift work, healthy lifestyle and sustainable employability. As a result of the recommendations made by the improvement team on shift work, job sharing and part-time retirement were introduced. Opportunities were provided for internal training and for moving to other departments. A calendar featuring activities related to nutrition, relaxation and exercise was also developed to encourage positive lifestyle changes. The established improvement teams have continued their work independently after the trial period and sustainable employment has become integrated into IOILC’s daily practice.

by making it available to the operative/non-operative level. A workshop was conducted for a total of 296 employees on 23 and 24 May 2017 at Tanjong Puteri Resort.

This phase of cascading the Leadership Culture Transformation (2.0) to other employees is to encourage greater participation and anticipation from the top to the bottom levels within the organisation in line with IOILC Asia’s strong belief that it will provide a positive atmosphere to the grassroots level in achieving IOILC Asia’s aspirations and Big 5 projects (Customer, De-complexity, China’s Xiamen, Innovation and Organisation 2019). IOILC Asia also believes that it will help to achieve corporate excellence in line with IOI Loders Croklaan’s Vision 2025.
