/196O.Samusl McCune Lindsay was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., May 10, 1869. Hereceived his Ph. Do from the University of Pennsylvania in 1889 and anLLD in 1909. He was special agent for the U . S . Senate Finance Committeein 1892 and agent forthe United States Industrial Commission to reporton railroad labor 1899-1900* Ee became professor of sociology at theUniversity of Pennsylvania (1896-1907) and Professor of Social Legisla-tion at Columbia (1907-1939). Among his other activities were NationalChild Labor Committee (Chairman) , American Academy of Political andSocial Science (President), American Economic Association (President),Association for Labor Legislation, I.
