A SPECIAL MESSAGE
H illel of Greater Philadelphia is proud to honor Robert A. Fox at tonight’s Vision and Values Celebration. Mr. Fox was born
and raised in Philadelphia, and in 1952 graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a major in Economics. After graduation, he and his brother, Dick created the Fox Construction Company, one of the Fox companies, and together developed numerous housing communities in the Delaware Valley.
In 1979, after enjoying many successful business ventures, Mr. Fox founded R.A.F. Industries, Inc., a private investment company acquiring and managing a diversified group of companies and venture capital investments. He is the Chairman and CEO of R.A.F. Industries, Inc.
Throughout his highly successful business career, Mr. Fox has been devoted to, and supportive of many Philanthropic activities, including serving as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, President and member of the Board of Managers of the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology, and a Director of the Foreign Policy Institute. At Wistar, the Foxes established and endowed the Robert and Penny Fox Distinguished Professorship to recruit and support a researcher in the field of cancer research.
In April 1999, Mr. Fox and his wife, Penny founded The Fox Leadership Program at the University of Pennsylvania and permanently endowed it with a substantial gift in 2007.
In September 2013, they made a new gift to expand the program and establish four new scholarships in the School of Arts and Sciences. The purpose of this program is to promote, encourage, and develop young leaders at Penn. Supporting Penn’s commitment to producing future leaders, the Robert A. Fox Leadership Program equips students with hands-on leadership experience and connects them with successful leaders—including Penn alumni and senior
University faculty and administrators—for discussion and mentorship. The program encourages students to develop leadership skills through service initiatives, leadership-focused courses, and leadership building experiences.
The Fox Leadership Program engages thousands of students each year with its "study and serve" mission, accomplished through a combination
of coursework, advising, events, and service experiences.
"Bob and Penny have a tremendous passion for giving Penn undergraduates unique opportunities to explore both service and leadership," said Amy Gutmann, President, University of Pennsylvania. "They created this program to enable our students to develop and apply their skills in practical and meaningful ways. The value of this approach has become ever more apparent with each passing year. We are so very

grateful to Bob and Penny for their vision and their continued generosity, which will benefit students for generations to come."
Longtime friends of Temple University and the Fox School, Robert and Penny Fox named the Dean’s Conference Room in Alter Hall after Robert’s father, Frederic, and created the Frederic Fox lecture series at the Fox School—annual lectures that bring together students, business visionaries and alumni to promote leadership development by engaging in thoughtful and dynamic discussions that have centered on religious, political and business themes.
“I am honored to play a role in the creation of Alter Hall,” says Bob. “The Fox School of Business has long served as the center of learning and technology for many of the region’s entrepreneurs, but Alter Hall will enable the Fox School to have a global reach and
to produce some of the world’s best and brightest business leaders.”
Mr. Fox is the recipient of both the Musser Award for Excellence in Leadership from Temple University and an Honorary Degree from Drexel University in 2013. Mr. Fox received the Alumni Award of Merit from the University of Pennsylvania.
Bob and Penny recently made a gift to the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design Historic Costume collection which will now bear their name.
In addition to his business and philanthropic ventures, Mr. Fox is an extremely dedicated family man. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Penny, their four children Debby, Nancy, Amy & Ken and his six grandchildren Jake, Anna, Max, Sam, Margaret and Hannah.
BIO
Hillel of Greater Philadelphia is proud to be paying tribute to Sherrie Savett, and recognizing
her commitment to the Philadelphia Jewish Community.
Ms. Savett is a Managing Shareholder at Berger & Montague, P.C. She serves as Chair of the firm’s Securities Fraud Group and the Whistleblower, Qui Tam & False Claims Act Group.
Sherrie earned her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and A.B.A. summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania.
Ms. Savett was named a “Pennsylvania Super Lawyer” by Philadelphia Law and Politics magazine every year for the last decade, and in several years was also named a
“Top 50 Women Pennsylvania Super Lawyer.” She has earned multiple distinctions by Lawdragon including: one of “500 Leading Litigators in America,” and one of the
“100 Lawyers You Need to Know in Securities Litigation.”
A business leader, Ms. Savett is a member of the Forum of Executive Women and a member of the Union League of Philadelphia.
She is a widely successful attorney, a highly sought after speaker, and has authored numerous articles on securities and complex litigation issues. With all of these accomplishments, Ms. Savett is most well-known for her devotion to the Jewish community and local philanthropic efforts.
She served and is still serving as President of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia from 2011–2014. She currently serves on the national executive committee of the Jewish Federations of North America representing
the large cities. She is Vice Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the National Liberty Museum, and former member of the National Cabinet of State of Israel Bonds and Philadelphia Co-Chair. In 2005, she received The Spirit of Jerusalem Medallion, the State of Israel Bonds’ highest honor.
In 1978, she was a new mother and just embarking on her career as a lawyer.
She was asked to participate in Federation’s first Zachor Leadership Mission to Israel, a mission which ignited her passion for Israel and Jewish leadership and developed her ability to raise money for the community’s most critical needs. “That mission changed my whole,” Sherrie said.
Thirty years and many missions later, Ms. Savett’s commitment to the Jewish community remains stronger than ever. Leadership of the Jewish community these last three years as President has “been the most challenging and rewarding experience of my life. My passion for ensuring Jewish continuity and finding ways to engage Jews of all ages in Jewish life has given my life more meaning.”
As Sherrie’s term as President of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia ends, she is optimistic for what the future holds. Under Sherrie’s leadership as President, Naomi Adler, the first female CEO in the Federation’s modern history, assumed the CEO position in May.
Sherrie is extremely devoted to her family with whom she shares her passion for Israel. Sherrie’s children are Stacy Savett Borer and Ross Borer, Scott Savett and Shani Twersky Savett and Lauren Savett Hausman and Marc Hausman. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren Elan and Ari Savett and Ariel Borer.

Student Exemplars of LeadershipBIO
Elie PeltzUniversity of PennsylvaniaElie is a senior at the University of Pennsylvania. Elie has been very involved in a variety of Jewish causes within the Hillel community during his four years
at Penn. He served as one of the Chairs of Shira Chadasha for two years. Shira Chadasha, part of the Partnership Minyan movement, is a traditional Halakhic religious community that aims to foster awareness around gender issues and Jewish law, prayer and spirituality, and building inclusive Jewish communities. Shira Chadasha has become one of the most popular Shabbat prayer options at Penn Hillel, attracting over 100 attendees on a regular basis.
Engaging students through education is incredibly important to Elie. He created and taught a Prayer Tutorial class at Penn which brought together students of all backgrounds to explore Friday Night services, gain more familiarity with the texts and tunes of the service, and through engaging with the text, explore larger questions of prayer and spirituality.
Another project that is dear to Elie is serving as Programming Chair of J Street. As the Chair, he assisted with the planning of speaker events, as well as a new series he helped start called "Join the Conversation.” “Join the Conversation” aims to create values-based and safe spaces for students from across Hillel and the broader campus community to discuss the most sensitive issues relating to Israel.
When asked what he will miss the most about Penn Hillel, Elie so eloquently replied, “I will miss the opportunity to have a tight-knit and centralized community made up of such interesting and Jewishly-engaged students, but whom all come from such different backgrounds and with such different stories. I think college is one of the only opportunities to really build a pluralistic Jewish community and to be in such close proximity to Jews of different backgrounds, and I will miss not having that in the coming years.”
Matt SolomonDrexel University
As a junior at Drexel University, Matt is a Communications Major and a Public Health Minor. He also serves as President of Beta Theta Pi at Drexel University.
Matt’s dedication to Hillel is heartwarming. His focus has always been student engagement and retention.
Matt developed a program called Jewniversity. It’s a “Welcome to Campus/Hillel” program which introduces new students to what Jewish life is all about at Drexel University. Matt recognized how overwhelming freshman year can be, and wanted to create a warm and inviting environment at Drexel Hillel.
During Matt’s tenure as Vice President, membership and retention numbers have gown exponentially. He is tenacious in encouraging others to challenge themselves, take leadership positions, and rise to their fullest potential.
Matt’s involvement with Drexel Hillel keeps him energized, and he is excited about helping Hillel recruit new members and keep current members positively engaged.
Amy RubinTemple University
Amy is from Harrisburg, PA and will be graduating this year with a degree in Social Work.
Amy is a founding member of Temple University’s Cook for a Friend program. Cook for a Friend at Temple is a volunteer group that meets on a weekly basis to cook meals for senior citizens whom are unable to shop or prepare their own meals. With Amy’s hard work and steadfast dedication to the program, Cook for a Friend
Student Exemplars of LeadershipBIO
has provided over 5,000 Glatt Kosher meals to the Philadelphia community.
In addition to volunteering her time with Cook for a Friend, she is the Social Work Intern for the Klein JCC and holds a board position at Temple’s Social Work Honors Society. After graduation, Amy plans on traveling to Israel with the MASA program . Her studies will continue as a graduate student to obtain her Masters in Gerentology.
Barry TallerGrad Network Temple University
Barry is a thrid year dental student at Temple University.
He was instrumental in restarting the Alpha Omega Chapter at Temple
Dental after more than a decade hiatus. He brought together a student board, recruited members, organized events, and networked with other dental students and dental professionals throughout the greater Philadelphia area.
Most recently, he worked closely with the leaders of other Temple professional schools to put together a Temple-wide Shabbat dinner. The event, Temple Mega Shabbat, was a huge success with over 100 students in attendance, and was widely praised by other students. Engaging students is one of Barry’s main priorities. He was the co-chair for an Alpha Omega alumni/student bowling event which took place in March.
Civic Engagement has always been important to Barry. He was heavily involved with Mitzvah Mania 2013 where he helped clean the streets of North Philadelphia. He continues to do volunteer work in the Philadelphia community. Barry is an extremely hard worker whose dedication to the community can only be matched with his determination to succeed in the Temple Dental program. Due to his hard work and dedication, Barry was recently elected President of the Alpha Omega chapter at Temple Dental.
Ali FrankWest Chester University
Ali is currently a sophomore at West Chester University and has always been very involved in Jewish life. She served as PR chair of the Hillel board and was just elected
President of West Chester University Hillel for the 2014-2015 academic year. Ali’s positive attitude is infectious and is always incredibly welcoming to all students. Ali played an instrumental role in planning WCU Promakkah (Hillel’s Hanukkah Semi-Formal). The event was a huge success, largely due to Ali’s assistance.
One of her fondest memories this year involves an event at Hillel. She enjoyed a night by the sukkah where everyone was singing and dancing to “Stand by Me” in the quad. “I know it sounds like a pretty simple night, but everyone who was there seemed to be having such a great time and that really filled me with happiness,” said Ali.
Ali attended Kol Emet Hebrew school, a Reconstructionist Synagogue in Yardley, PA. Ali and her family were dedicated congregants. Ali enjoyed attending Hebrew School and continued with her confirmation and even worked at the synagogue throughout high school.
Ali is dedicated to helping others, she volunteers at St. Mary Medical Center during the summer and works as a lifeguard at a school for individuals with special needs. She also helps coach her old high school synchronized swimming team during her breaks from school.
