Many vacation and see the wonderful sites of Spain, but few realize the spiritual darkness Spaniards live in.

Spaniards are community oriented placing a high value on family and their group of close friends. It is difficult to enter into the established “clicks”, but once you have, you will be introduced to everyone within their circle of friends.

Therefore, the most effective evangelism is through friendships.

No matter what project we plan we have to remember that our job is about people.

Witnessing and discipling involve getting involved in people’s lives through close relationships, so that the lost not only hear the message of Christ but also see it in our lives.

Our goal is to reach them where they are. We strive to get into their community where they feel safe as opposed to bringing them into to ours, which they know nothing about.

For example, we hang out with them in local restaurants, we play together, we eat together, and we help them out when they are in need.

There are about 1 million people in Extremadura.

Extremadura is known to be poorest (monetarily speaking) part of Spain and produces a wide variety of agricultural products.

The average weekly attendance in non-Gypsy local evangelical groups in Extremadura is about 400 total, including children.

Most of the churches are small (30-40 members) and many of the towns have one or two families that are believers.

There are around 19 small groups (5-10 people) in various towns that meet regularly.

There are 9 established churches (30-50 people) mostly lead by missionaries.

The University of Extremadura is split between two major cities (Cáceres and Badajoz) and two towns (Mérida and Plasencia).

The university is a relatively large campus with almost 13,000 students in Badajoz and another 13,000 in Cáceres.

Many of the students attending the University of Extremadura are from the city of Badajoz as well as the surrounding towns. 

Unlike universities students in the States, after finishing their university degree, the students here in Extremadura often return back to their hometowns to work.  Thus, there is much potential

for extended future ministry among these students.

Our desire is to see a church planting movement take place throughout Extremadura by means of the students.

Our goal is to see students take the gospel to their cities and hometowns. 

Like many campuses, there is much darkness and very little light.

In fact, there are less than 5 known believers in the entire University of Extremadura which has around 27,000 students.

God has been working through the “visiting student” program which allows Americans to come and be enrolled at the university and live in a dorm. We have seen how through a student’s incarnational witness there can be a great impact for the gospel and advancement in the Kingdom of God.
