OER: Understanding the Present, Forecasting the Future.
Can Open Educa, onal Resources make an impact on "the iron triangle" of cost, access and quality? In this session, you’ll be exposed to the different low-‐cost materials available and discuss how we can make our online courses more affordable for students. The speakers will also demonstrate a new directory site dedicated to low-‐cost materials.

The Iron Triangle Applied to Course Materials
The Quality Angle Applied to Course Materials
• 1000+ Year Old Model • Proven • Singular Model
The Cost Angle Applied to Course Materials
• Rising Student Cost • Student Debt • 3x Infla6on • Unsustainable Rate
The Access Angle Applied to Course Materials
• Affordability • Unequal Access • The Student Response
Defining Open Education Resources (OER)
Teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-‐purposing by others. Open Educa6onal Resources are explicitly licensed for certain kinds of use, redistribu6on, and remixing.
OER Course Materials Applied to The Iron Triangle
Why reduce student cost using OERs?
Alarming Research Results About Cost
• Textbook prices jumped 82% between 2002 and 2012, three 6mes the rate of infla6on. (Government Accountability Office)
Alarming Research Results About Cost
• 65% of students reported that they had decided against buying a textbook because it was too expensive. (PIRG Report)
Alarming Research Results About Cost
• 94% of the students who had skipped buying a required book said they were concerned that doing this would hurt their grade in that course. (PIRG Report)
How OERs make an impact
Example of an OER Impact
How OERs Affect The Traditional Model
• Increased Student Accessibility • Updated Textbooks • Increased Student Equity • Reduced Student Cost/ Debt
