Gründung des Unternehmens durch Karl-Scheffer Klute.

Einige Jahre später übernimmt sein Schwiegersohn Wilhelm Blome den Betrieb.

Founding of the company by Karl-Scheffer Klute.

A few years later his son-in-law Wilhelm Blome took over the business. Wilhelm Blome gelingt nach dem Krieg die Wiederaufnahme der Pumpenfertigung.

Schon bald gehören auch Fußballpumpen zum SKS-Sortiment.

After the war Wilhelm Blome successfully revived pump manufacturing. Soon after, football pumps would also belong to the SKS range.

1932 Übernahme der ortsansässigen Luftpumpenfabrik und Einstieg in die Fertigung von Metall-Luftpumpen.

In den Kriegsjahren werden zwangsweise Hutmuttern für den Flugzeugbau gefertigt.

When the locally-based air pump factory goes bankrupt in 1932, Wilhelm Blome recruits the factory manager and starts up in the manufacture of metal bicycle pumps.

During the war years forced acorn nuts are manufactured.

Um sich von den zugekauften Stahlrohren unabhängig zu machen, experimentiert man zunächst mit Aluminium, um sich dann für Kunststoff als neues Rohrmaterial zu entscheiden. SKS beginnt 1956 mit der Produktion von Kunststoffpumpen.

To free the company from dependence on outsourced steel tubes, experiments are initially carried out with aluminum, but the decision is eventually taken to optfor the new raw material, plastic. up in the extended production halls. In 1956, SKS starts manufacture of plastic pumps.

In den 80er und 90er Jahren bestimmt die Erstausrüstung, also die Lieferung von Pumpen an die Fahrradfabriken, die Ausrichtung des Unternehmens. SKS wird zum Marktführer und Mengenlieferanten für OEM-Luftpumpen und liefert in bis zu 90 Länder weltweit. Täglich laufen im Werk Sundern vollautomatisiert bis zu 50.000 Pumpen vom Fließband.

In the eighties and nineties, original equipment manufacturing – the supply of pumps to cycle factories – determines the orientation of the company. SKS becomes a market leader and volume supplier of OEM air pumps, supplying ninety countries worldwide. As many as 50.000 pumps roll off the production line in the fully-automated Sundern plant every day.

Ende der 60er Jahre erlebt Europa durch die Erfolge von Eddy Merchx einen Radsportboom.

Der Betriebsleiter und Chefentwickler Walter Scheffer setzt sich an sein Zeichenbrett und konstruiert das Kultprodukt unter den Luftpumpen, den Vater aller Standpumpen, den Rennkompressor.

At the end of the 60s, Europe experienced a cycling boom following the successes of Eddy Merchx.

Operations Manager and Chief Developer Walter Scheffer comes up with the cult product of cycle pumps – the »father« of all floor pumps.

In den 70er Jahren lösen Didi Thurau und Gregor Braun den ersten deutschen Radsportboom aus. Thurau begeistert in Gelb Millionen vor den Bildschirmen und Gregor Braun wird 1976 zum Sportler des Jahres. Renn-räder sind gefragt – und SKS liefert die ersten Rennrad-Rahmenpumpen. Die Rennstar oder die SuperCorsa kennt jeder Radsportler dieses Jahrzehnts.

In the seventies, Didi Thurau and Gregor Braun trigger the first German cycle sporting boom. Wearing the yellow jersey, Thurau enthuses millions on television and in 1976, Gregor Braun is voted sportsman of the year. Racing bikes are in demand – and SKS supplies the first racing-bike frame-fitting pumps. The Rennstar and SuperCorsa are well-known amongst seventies racing cyclists.

1983 wurde durch die Übernahme der englischen Traditionsmarke Bluemels der Einstieg in den Bereich Schutzbleche, im Sprachgebrauch SKS Radschützer, vorbereitet. 1988 begann die Serienfertigung von extrudierten Radschützern, die später nach Übernahme der ESGE-Fertigung als Chromoplastics weltweit zur Referenz für Radschützer werden sollten.

By taking over the traditional British brand Bluemels in 1983, the entrance into the mudguard segment was made. In 1988 large-scale production of extruded mudguards began. Later on, after taking over the ESGE-production, these became –known as Chromoplastics- a worldwide reference for mudguards.

Which material is the right one for me ?

The core of our mudguards are the profiles. They are made of plastic-aluminium foil sandwich. Two plastics can be used.

CAB (cellulose acetate butyrate)

CAB is a premium-class plastic based on cellulose (wood). Characteristic for this material is the glossy surface. It is permanently weather and UV-resistant. Profiles made from CAB are flexible, even after years of use under all kinds of weather conditions. Many bike manufac-turers, especially the high-end ones, use mudguards made from CAB.

PET (polyethylene terephthalate)

PET is a thermoplastic polymer. This material is also quite flexible and has a glossy surface when new. After years of use, though, it wears out a little. Because of this attribute, PET-mudguards are more popular for using on entry-price level bikes.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

EINFÜHRUNGWelches Material ist das Richtige für mich?

Das Herzstück unserer Radschützer sind die Profile, welche aus zwei verschiedenen Kunststoffmaterialien gefertigt werden können.

CAB (Celluloseacetobutyrat).

CAB ist ein hochwertiger Kunststoff, der auf Cellulose (Holz) basiert. Das Material zeichnet sich durch einen sehr hohen Oberflächen- glanz aus und ist dauerhaft sowohl UV- als auch witterungsbeständig. Profile aus CAB sind besonders flexibel. Auch nach jahrelanger Nutzung in allen Wetterverhältnissen ist fast kein Verschleiß erkennbar. Das Gros der Hersteller, insbesondere diejenigen, die im High-End Bereich angesiedelt sind, setzt bei den Radschützern CAB ein.

PET (Polyethylenterephthalat).

PET ist ein thermoplastischer Kunststoff. Auch dieses Material ist flexibel und besitzt anfangs ebenfalls einen hohen Oberflächenglanz. Nach längerem Einsatz werden hier jedoch Abnutzungserscheinungen sichtbar. Dieses Material ist aufgrund dessen bestens für die Ein-stiegspreisklasse geeignet.

MATERIALVERGLEICH CAB - PETUm die beiden Materialien miteinander vergleichen zu können, sehen Sie unten abgebildet eine Grafik, die die Schlagzähigkeit von PET und CAB während eines Bewitterungstests zeigt.

Bei diesem Test werden die Materialien bei 60°C abwechselnd UV-bestrahlt und 100% Luftfeuchtigkeit ausgesetzt, um so den Alterungspro-zess im Zeitraffer zu simulieren.

COMPARING CAB - PETThe chart below shows the CAB-PET impact resistance, comparison during a weathering test, performed at lab.

In order to simulate the aging process, the materials are exposed to 100% humidity and UV-rays alternatively at a temperature of 60°C.

BLUEMELS Radschützer sind aus hochwertigem CAB gefertigt. Das Equipment wie Winkel, Strebe, Fest-sowie Schiebebrücke wird in V2A Edelstahl angeboten, da dies eine lange Lebensdauer gewährleistet. Als Sicherheitssystem ist das bekannte ASR-System erhältlich.

BLUEMELS mudguards are made of CAB. The equipment e.g. bracket, stay, fixed-and also sliding bridge is offered in stainless steel due to its long life span. The security system used here is our well known ASR system.

ALUFLEX Radschützer sind aus flexiblem PET gefertigt. Das Equipment wie die Strebe ist in V2A Edelstahl, als auch in verzinkter Ausführung erhältlich; die Schiebebrücke kann in V2A Edelstahl oder Kunststoff bezogen werden. Die Sicherheitsbefestigung ASR rundet die Serie ab.

For ALUFLEX PET plastic is used. The equipment e.g. the stay is available in stainless steel and as well in zinc plated; the sliding bridge itself in stainless steel or plastic. The security system ASR completes our ALUFLEX series.

Radschutz in Reinkultur: EDGE AL garantiert City- sowie Trekkingfahrern einen optimalen Spritzschutz auf der Straße. Die weit heruntergezogenen Radschützer aus Aluminium bieten eine hohe Stabilität, obwohl diese lediglich an drei Punkten befestigt werden müssen. Ein Gepäckträger ist für das Anbringen unnötig. Durch die puristische matt-schwarze Optik und das kantige Profil integriert sich EDGE AL nahezu unsichtbar am Rahmen.

Mudguard in pure form: EDGE AL guarantees city and trekking cyclists ideal splash protection on the road. This aluminium mudguard is closed to the tire and offers great stability, although it is only attached at three points. No load rack is necessary to attach EDGE AL. With a purist matt-black look and an angular profile, EDGE AL integrates itself almost invisibly into the frame.

Our modish new flat fender is not just an optical upgrade. This lightweight fender is very sturdy and stable, can be customized in different colours and prints according to your needs. The assembling system is our proven USC, coupled with high thickness stainless steel stays. The first version of this new product series is the M42, available in 20", 24", 26" and 28". FARBPALETTE PROFILEWir sind in der Lage unsere Radschützer in nahezu allen Farben zu produzieren. Es gibt mehrere Techniken, wie ein Radschutz farbig werden kann:

Gefärbter Kunststoff

Hierzu wird Farbgranulat unter das CAB bzw. PET gemischt, welches das Profil einfärbt. Profile können deckend (z.B. weiß 10, schwarz 30) oder transluzent (z.B. chromet 22, grey 32) eingefärbt werden.

Farbige oder geprägte Folien in das Profil extrudieren

Bei dieser Technik werden Folien in bestimmten Farben oder Prägungen direkt in das Profil mit hinein extrudiert. Beispiele sind die Folien Escher, Brushed oder Rhombus.

Gefärbter Kunststoff mit Folie

Die beiden oben beschriebenen Techniken können auch kombiniert werden. So ist bei der Farbe »34« (brushed/escher/brushed in light-grey-metallic) außen jeweils eine Folie im Brushed-Design und in der Mitte eine im Escher-Design eingezogen. Der Kunststoff selbst ist »light-grey-metallic« eingefärbt.

Sollten Sie eine Farbe wünschen, welche noch nicht in unserem Sortiment ist, sprechen Sie uns bitte an.

AVAILABLE COLOURS OF PROFILESWe are able to produce our mudguards virtually in any color. There are several different techniques how a mudguard can be colored:

Colored plastic

A masterbatch (coloring agent) is added to the PET or CAB pellets, resulting in a colored profile. The colour can either be solid (e.g. our white »10« or black »30«) or translucent (e.g. our chromet »22« or grey “32”).

Colored or printed aluminum foils

Here special aluminum foils which are painted or stamped are extruded right into the sandwich-profile. Examples are the foils Escher, Brushed or Rhombus.

Colored plastic and printed foils

The above mentioned techniques can also be combined. Our colour »34« (brushed/escher/brushed in light-grey-metallic) is an example. Here the side foils are brushed and the middle is in escher execution, extruded in a light-grey-metallic profile.

ALLGEMEINE MONTAGERICHTLINIE FÜR EXTRUDIERTE RADSCHÜTZER

1. Der Radschutz ist mit einem gleichbleibenden Abstand von 1,0 bis ca. 1,5 cm zum Reifen zu verbauen. Der Mindestabstand von 1,0 cm darf unter keinen Umständen unterschritten werden (Unfallgefahr!).2. Am Radschutz für das Vorderrad muss ein Sicherheitssystem (ASR, SECU-CLIP, ESC, etc.) verbaut werden. Der Verzicht auf ein Sicherheitssystem kann zum Aufwickeln des Radschutzprofils und damit zum Blockieren des Rades führen (Unfallgefahr!).3. Der Radschutz ist ohne jegliche Vorspannung zu verbauen (d.h. der Radius darf durch die Montage nicht geändert werden).4. Der Öffnungswinkel der Streben bei V-Streben und Verwendung des SECU-CLIPS darf bei der Montage weder verkleinert, noch vergrößert werden. Ein Verändern des Öffnungswinkels kann zur Fehlfunktion oder zum Bruch des SECU-CLIPS führen (Unfallgefahr!).5. Alle von SKS ausgelieferten Radschützer dürfen nur mit originalem SKS-Zubehör verbaut werden (ausgenommen sind Normteile). Durch das Verbauen von Fremdteilen wie z.B. Streben, Spoiler, Schiebebrücken, etc. anderer Hersteller, erlischt jede Gewährleis tung und Haftung durch SKS. Der Verbau von Fremdteilen kann zu Funktionsausfällen führen (Unfallgefahr!).6. Bei Festbrücken und bei P-SPB’s müssen zur Abdeckung scharfkantiger Strebenenden Strebenendkappen montiert werden, die konstruktiv gegen unbeabsichtigtes Abfallen gesichert sind (Unfallgefahr!). Zusätzlich empfehlen wir an den Profilenden die Verwendung von Kantenschonern und Spoilern.7. Bei Umlaufstreben empfehlen wir zur höchstmöglichen Steifigkeit unserer Radschützer einen möglichst senkrechten Abgang der Strebe vom Radschutzprofil. Flache Winkel zwischen Radschutz und Strebe können zu hohe Schwingungen im Radschutz verursachen. Diese können zum Bruch des Profils führen (Unfallgefahr!).8. Die DIN EN ISO 4210-3 beschreibt unter anderem Prüfverfahren für Radschützer. Das Ergebnis dieser Tests wird durch diverse Faktoren wie Reifenprofil, Reifendruck und Abstand Radschutz zum Reifen beeinflusst. Auf diese Faktoren hat SKS keinen Einfluss und kann somit keine Gewähr für die Einhaltung dieser Norm geben. Daher empfiehlt SKS für eine möglichst sichere Montage unserer Radschützer, einen Test entsprechend der DIN EN ISO 4210-3 nach vollständiger Montage des Fahrrades durchzuführen. Für diesen Test ist der Hersteller des Fahrrades verantwortlich.9. Vorderer Radschutz: Für die Erfüllung des Punktes 4.2.1.2 (Stufe 2: Prüfverfahren – Radialbelastung) der DIN EN ISO 4210-3 empfiehlt SKS die Positionierung der untersten Strebe zwischen 25-65 mm (gemessen ohne Spoiler/ Kantenschoner) vom Radschutzende entfernt. Bei einem längeren Nachlauf als 65 mm besteht die Gefahr des Blockierens des Vorderrades (Unfallgefahr!).10. Das Vorlaufmaß am vorderen Radschutz (Abstand im Bogenmaß von Winkel zum vorderen Radschutzende) sollte 195 mm nicht überschreiten. Da ein längerer Vorlauf zum Bruch des Profils führen kann, bedarf es bei einer Abweichung einer gesonderten Prüfung (Unfallgefahr!).11. Das Nachlaufmaß bei hinteren Radschützern (Abstand im Bogenmaß vom letzten Befestigungspunkt (bspw. Strebenschenkel oder Gepäckträgerbefestigung) bis zum hinteren Radschutzende) darf ohne Anbauteile wie Spoiler, etc. nicht länger als 150 mm sein. Da ein längerer Nachlauf zum Bruch des Profils führen kann, bedarf es bei einer Abweichung einer gesonderten Prüfung (Unfallgefahr!). 12. Hinterer Radschutz: für die optimale Abstützung des Radschutzprofils empfiehlt SKS vier Befestigungspunkte13. Bestehende Normen, Richtlinien und Gesetze sind einzuhalten (Unfallgefahr!).14. Grundsätzlich muss der jeweils geltenden Rechtspraxis entsprechend, geeignete bzw. vorgeschriebene Arbeitsschutz- Vorkehrungen getroffen werden. Arbeitsschutzausrüstung muss getragen werden.

GENERAL MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR EXTRUDED MUDGUARDS

1. The mudguard is to be mounted with a uniform clearance of 1.0- approx.1.5 cm from the tyres. The minimum clearance of 1.0 cm is not to be fallen short of under any circumstances (risk of accident!).2. A safety system (ASR, SECU-CLIP, ESC, etc.) is to be mounted on the mudguard for the front wheel. A dispensation with a safety system can result in a coiling of the mudguard profile, resulting in the wheel blocking (risk of accident!).3. The mudguard is to be mounted entirely free from pretension (the radius is not to be altered by the mounting).4. The opening angle of the stays when using V-stays and the use of the SECU-CLIP is neither to be tightened nor expanded during the mounting. A changing of the opening angle can result in a malfunctioning or breaking of the SECU-CLIP (risk of accident!).5. All of the mudguards supplied by SKS are only to be mounted using original SKS accessories (the exception being standardised parts). The mounting of third party components, e.g. stays, spoilers, sliding bridges, etc. from other manufacturers results in the SKS warranty and liability being rendered invalid. The mounting of third party components can result in malfunctioning (risk of accident!).6. When using fixed bridges and P-SPBs (stay profile attachments), profile end caps are to be used in order to cover sharp-edged stay ends, these being of a design that provides protection against them unintentionally falling off (risk of accident!). We additionally recommend the use of edge protectors and spoilers at the ends of profiles.7. In the event of circulating stays being used, we recommend that in order to obtain the highest possible degree of rigidity of our mudguards, the stays should be positioned as vertically as possible from the mudguard profile. Flat angles between the mudguard and the stay can result in high oscillations occurring in the mudguard. This can result in the profile breaking (risk of accident!).8. Among other aspects, the DIN EN ISO 4210-3 also described the testing procedure for mudguards. The result of this test is influenced by diverse factors such as the tyre tread, the tyre pressure and the clearance between the mudguard and the tyre. SKS is unable to influence these factors so that it is also unable to provide a warranty for the adherence to this norm. SKS therefore recommends that in order to ensure a mounting of our mudguards as safely as possible, a test that is conform with DIN EN ISO 4210-3 should be carried out after the bicycle has been fully assembled. The bicycle manufacturer is responsible for the conducting of this test.9. Front mudguard: in order to meet the requirement of 4.2.1.2 (stage 2: test procedure – radial load) of DIN EN ISO 4210-3, SKS recommends a positioning of the lowest stay between 25-65 mm (measured without a spoiler/edge protector) from the end of the mudguard. Should the trailing be longer than 65 mm, there is a risk that the front wheel could block (risk of accident!).10. The leading measure at the front mudguard (clearance in the radian measure from the angle to the end of the front mudguard) is not to exceed 195 mm. As a longer lead can result in the profile breaking, a special test is to be carried out should there be a deviation (risk of accident!).11. The trailing measure with rear mudguards (clearance in the radian measure from the last mounting point (e.g. the shank or the luggage rack fixture) to the rear end of the mudguard), is not to be longer than 150 mm, excluding mounted parts such as a spoiler, etc. As a longer lead can result in the profile breaking, a special test is to be carried out should there be a deviation (risk of accident!).12. Rear mudguard: SKS recommends four fixing points for an optimal supporting of the mudguard profile.13. Existing norms, guidelines and legislation are to be adhered to (risk of accident!).14. Basically, suitable or stipulated work safety precautions are to be taken in keeping with valid legal practice. Personal protective equipment is to be worn.

Finding the right stay can sometimes be puzzling due to the large variety of fastening systems for stays.

We produce stays according to the lengths and shapes you need. Mostly, our stays are made from stainless steel. In addition to that, we also offer zinc-plated versions.

Our stays, in either of the three materials, have a long lifespan. They are aligned to our faste-ners, but can also be used for other, universal purposes.

Some Countries have safety regulations which prescribe the use of edge protectors to cover the edge of the front mudguard in order to prevent acci-dents. Thanks to our modern techniques, sharp edges are almost completely eliminated. Still, we offer edge protectors with our mudguards to finish the design. Some manufacturers even use our nicely shaped edge protectors instead of spoilers.

In einigen Ländern gibt es Sicherheitsvorschriften, die den Einsatz von Kantenschonern an der Kante der vorderen Radschützer zur Unfallverhütung vorschreiben. Auch wenn durch unsere moderne Technik gefährliche Kanten fast ausgeschlossen sind, offerieren wir die Kantenschoner als abrun-dendes Element zu unseren Radschützern. Einige Hersteller verwenden die formschönen Schoner sogar anstelle von Spoilern.

An innovative cable routing system consists of an aluminum profile called »E-CHARGE«, the profile can be latched under the mudguard, providing guide and cover for an E-BIKE cable harness. Here also large cables with preassembled plugs can be fit. The mounting take place with two screws at the bottom bracket and the carrier connection, depending on the length of the >>E-CHARGE<< at the front of the carrier or at the toplight in combination with the new GT MANTIS.

You don’t need a stay at the end of the mudguard if you use the longest version. In combination with the >>E-CHARGE<< the mudguard becomes the higher stiffness.
