History of

Woodblock Water-colour Printing Technique

朵云轩木版水印技艺


of Duo Yun Xuan

木版水印传统复制艺术在我国有悠久历史，从流传于世的唐代咸通九年（公元868年）雕版印刷的《金刚经》扉页插图来看，当时的单色印刷就已有相当的水平。历经宋元，到了明末已出现了“饾版”、“拱花”等复杂的套版叠印，在技艺上有了很大的进步。

今日的木版水印适应中国画特点，又不断得以发展，成为一门综合了绘画、雕刻和印刷的再创造艺术。它具有现代用网线分色油墨印刷所不能达到的效果，从而能更真实地重现原画的精神风貌和笔趣墨韵，达到几可乱真的境界。

Muban Shuiyin (Woodblock Water-colour Printing) is a time-

honoured Chinese engraving art that has no parallel

throughout the world. The illustration of the Diamond Sutra

printed in 868 AD, had already shown high level of

monochromic painting by this method.

By the end of Ming Dynasty, complex skills like douban

(colour process) and gonghua (embossing) had been created,

which reflected the great technical progress.

Today, woodblock water-colour printing has become a kind of

recreative art that combines painting, engraving and printing.

This technique is able to achieve effects unattainable by

modern screen or ink-printing process. Because of this, it gets

the ability of reproducing paintings so accurately that is

hardly distinguishable from the original paintings.

上海朵云轩

Shanghai Duo Yun Xuan

上海朵云轩创立于清代末叶（公元1900年），从事木版水印已有百年历史，从初期的印制笺谱小品，发展到能复制历代流传的巨幅工笔写意的绢本纸本绘画艺术作品，如工整细致的宋徽宗赵佶《瑞鹤图》等不胜枚举。为抢救中国文化遗产，朵云轩于1981年重制《明· 萝轩变古笺谱》，是中国古代版画艺术划时代的杰作。值得一提的是举世闻名的《明· 胡正言十竹斋书画谱》，全册分书画、竹、墨华、石、翎毛、梅、兰、果八谱，一书一画共356幅，重新复制精雕细琢工程浩大，荣获1989年度莱比锡国际图书博览会国家大奖，为我国图书出版事业争得了极大的荣誉。朵云轩在长期的艺术探索中，逐渐形成了自己的风格，以悉仿古制，刻意乱真见长，尤以再现水墨大写意的笔墨情趣独步艺坛。

Founded in 1900, Shanghai Duo Yun Xuan has been engaged

in woodblock water-colour printing for over a hundred years.

It has covered a long stretch, from the beginning of only

printing letter paper till now reproducing huge historical

paintings on both silk and paper, and in both gongbi (refined

description) and xieyi (writing mind), which are the two main

skills of traditional Chinese painting. Luoxuan Biangu Jianpu

(Revised Form of Ancient Writing Paper Made by Luoxuan) in

Ming Dynasty, which Duo Yun Xuan reproduced in 1981, is a

masterpiece of Chinese ancient graphic art. Another precious

printing Duo Yun Xuan reproduced is Shizhuzhai Shuhuapu

by Hu Zhengyan in Ming Dynasty. It includes eight sections

covering bamboo, stones, floral, birds, plums, fruits, botanical,

and calligraphic drawing samples. Each sample painting

matches a poem as illustration. There are 356 pairs in total.

Due to its complexity and high artistic details, it had won the

top prize of Leipzig International Book Exhibition in 1989.

Throughout time, Duo Yun Xuan has developed its own

techniques on woodblock water-colour printing. The accuracy

of its reproductions and resemblance to original works are

truly astonishing.

Time Line of the Development of


Tang Dynasty (618-907)

The Diamond Sutra later found at Dun Huang has shown the technique was existed. Not only words but illustration paintings are all made of woodblock printing technique in 868 A.D.

Song Dynasty (960-1279)

The invention of movable-type printing technique by Sheng Bi in 1041 has a significant influence over the development of woodblock printing. Offset printing technique was then invented.

Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)

In Ming China, it is a golden time for woodblock printing technique. Many new skills have been invented. Also, the same tools and procedures we are still using in modern days. At this time, multi-colour offset printing technique is widely used.

Qing Dynasty (1644-1912)

Due to the Qing conquest and later the import of European printing technology, woodblock printing technique was almost come to its ending. Thanks to the traditional habit of using brush pens, woodblock printing technique was only used to produce letter papers.

Republic of China (1912-1949)

In 1930s, Chinese author Xun Lu and his colleague Zhenduo Zheng started a conservation project to protect this ancient technique including restoring Albums of Sketches by Shi Zhu Zhai and Collections of Printing Patterns Evolved from Old Times by Xuan Luo.

1950s and 1960s

After 1949, woodblock printing technique has been used to copy national treasure level paintings to sell overseas in exchange of dollars to support the reconstructing of the country after the war. Rong Bao Zhai in Beijing and Duo Yun Xuan in Shanghai have been granted the permission to conduct the project. It is this time, Woodblock Water-colour Printing technique becomes an official name and credited as a national intangible cultural heritage.

勾描

根据原作的流派和风格特点，用笔的枯湿浓淡及设色的微妙变化，结合木版水印工艺操作特点，进行设计分组分版，然后用毛笔精确无误地勾描在雁皮纸上。

Drawing/Tracing

According to the original painting, engravers use brush pen to trace its lines. After delineating the whole painting, engravers will design how the shape and content of different woodblock and the number of woodblock.

刻版

把描好的刻稿反贴在梨木板上，运用各种刀具和刀法，精雕细镂，刻出各种线条枯笔，制成“饾版”或“拱花”用版。

Carving

By using different knives, engravers carve out lines drew by previous step engravers.

根据原作所用的材料和颜色，参照原作的艺术风格，掌握每一笔的浓淡干湿，节奏变化，将水墨或色彩刷掸在已经刻好的木版上，运用娴熟的水印工艺技巧，把每一幅画的所有分版分别套印在宣纸或画绢上。

Printing

Applying ink and colours made of mineral materials on different woodblocks, engravers will press gently with tools made of dried palm tree leave on papers or silk. By adding colours into lines, a reproduction is composed.

由66块线版和色版印刷而成的木版水印消夏图，是对宋画消夏图的完美复制和再生。这就是朵云轩木版水印技术。平均一套木版只能印刻60-80幅作品。

By using 66 woodblocks to compose one engraving that

almost captures all the details of a painting from Song

Dynasty (960-1279 A.D.). This is Duo Yun Xuan

Woodblock Water-colour Printing technique. Normally,

one set of woodblocks can only print 60 to 80 copies.

木版水印所用之木材均为梨木。中国画颜料为传统矿物颜料，在一般载体上很难完全保留，但梨木能恰当保存水分，充分表现出中国画的意境。梨木软硬适中，可以完美地将工匠雕刻的劲道表现出来，同时又能耐住多次的押印，是最适合木版水印的材料。

All woodblocks are made of pear trees. Pear trees have

the perfect ability to absorb water so that Chinese

paintings can easily stay on it. Also, pear trees are soft

enough for carving very delicate lines and hard enough

for printing.

The original piece is kept at Forbidden

City Museum in Beijing. This woodblock

water-colour printing handscroll copy is

made in 2009. This particular one has a

series number of 28 out of 60. One of them

eventually has been given to former US

President Barack Obama as a state gift.

For the remaining 59 copies, most of them

are collected by museums and several are

sold. This one is generously lent by a

private collector so that we can have a

genuine taste of the rare complete

handscroll version.

国宝级的孤品National Treasure Level Precious

在国家博物馆对中国书画作品分类中，因为存世的稀少及对后世的影响，宋朝的字画一直享有着最高的地位。这次的展品中我们也包括了两件宋画中的精品，《写生蛱蝶图》和《瑞鹤图》。两幅手卷是宋代宫廷画风和士大夫阶层风雅情趣的极佳代表。而精准还原古画的风采和韵味则将木版水印的最高技艺展现了出来。由于这两幅作品印制数量少，多为私人及博物馆收藏，因此存世流传的也极少，可谓是国宝级的孤品。

According to Chinese State Museums’ ranking, paintings from Song

Dynasty have been considered as the most precious ones due to the rarity

and ingeniousness. This time, we have brought two masterpieces of Song

China paintings, Sketch of Butterflies and Auspicious Cranes. They have

presented the fineness of court paintings and elite people paintings

respectively. They have also shown the brilliance of using woodblock water-

colour printing technique in documenting and restoring ancient Chinese

paintings. Because of the limited numbers we made, it can be called as

national treasure level precious art works as well.
