serving on our Hall of Fame committees. Committee members will participate in the selectionprocess for Industry and Technology Pioneers by reviewing and conducting due diligence fornominations received. Øivind Reinertsen moved to Texas inthe fall 2005 to open Statoil’s new office inHouston. After the merger of Statoil andHydro on October 1, 2007, Reinertsenbecame the current President of the StatoilUSM region. He has a long standing careerwith Statoil. In the past he has been involvedin developing large projects off the coast ofNorway, as well as responsible for the operation of the Sleipner and Gulfaks fieldsas offshore platform manager.

Reinertsen came to Houston from theposition of Senior Vice President, responsiblefor all operations and activities in theTampen area, one of the main areas of production for Statoil on the NorwegianContinental Shelf. Outside of Norway, hepreviously managed the Statoil office in the Netherlands. Reinertsen is a PetroleumEngineer graduate from the RogalandRegional College (University of Stavanger)in 1976.

OEC Invitational Fishing Tournament Oct. 14-15OEC’s 7th Annual Invitational Fishing Tournament was held Thursday and Friday,

Oct. 14-15. Registration at the Ocean Star located on 20th Street and Harborside Drive(Pier 19) in Galveston. There was time to visit the Ocean Star before the evening’s festivities begin, which included dinner at 6:30 and a live auction and door prize drawings.

A complete wrap up of the tournament’s events, including photos of the winningand other teams, will be presented in the Fourth Quarter newsletter.

This year’s tournament underwriter is Baker Hughes. Ted Ryan, President, RyanEnterprises LLC, continued as this year’s Tournament Chairman.

The tournament began Friday morning 30 minutes before sunrise with a continentalbreakfast in the dining tent before beginning the day’s fishing in Galveston Bay.Weigh-in was at 3:00 p.m. followed by dinner, more door prizes drawings and theawards ceremony.

Petroleum Club in downtown Houston, which turned out to be avery popular venue with many positive responses and commentsregarding the size and layout as well as the number of exhibitors this year. This event was attended by 130 interns and 45 corporaterepresentatives and speakers. Emcees were Dave Dunlap, CEO ofSuperior Energy Services, and Steve Nance, President, Steele CreekInvestment Company, who have emceed the event since its inception. Following some welcoming remarks, they introduced thekeynote speaker, Duncan Junor, Senior Director of Halliburton.

Following lunch, Marilyn Moats Kennedy, President of CareerStrategies, presented How to Succeed in Business: What You Need ThatSchools Didn’t Give You. A panel session followed, which discussedthe Life Cycle of Oil and Gas Development. Panelists included

John Schiller, Chairman & CEO of Energy XXI; Bryan Neskora,President of TGP Pipeline; Becky Harden, Land Manager forApache Corp.; and Melissa Bond, Drilling Engineering Supervisorfor ExxonMobil. Jan Hargrave, CEO of Jan Hargrave & Associates,closed out the afternoon session with her informative and entertain-ing discussion on body language.

OEC’s MOLU was set up at the Petroleum Club and the internshad the opportunity to rotate through the six kiosks. The internsformed 15 teams and answered questions throughout the day frominformation presented in the MOLU. Kristin Nance with Chevronorganized this event. The winning team of interns was each awardeda $50 gift card.

Following a cocktail reception,Ocean Star Gala Chairman Ryan Lanceopened the event and welcomed theguests and recognized the Gala’s sponsors. He then introduced OEC Chairman LibbyCheney, who presented a brief overview ofOEC’s missions and initiatives, and thenpresented the Chairman’s Award to two recipients for thefirst time. The awards were presented to Neil Duffin, President of ExxonMobil Development Company and OEC’s ViceChairman/Exhibits & Programs, for his “huge role in obtaining major commit-ments from companies to support the Ocean Star’s renovation.” Also receiving aChairman’s Award was Kurt Hoffman, Senior Vice President & COO of SeahawkDrilling and OEC’s Vice Chairman/Operations, “for his continued diligence overmany years to plan the renovation and bring it to fruition.”

Following dinner, Ryan presented the 2010 Pinnacle Award to Dean Taylor,Chairman, President & CEO of Tidewater, who is an avid supporter of OEC andits missions and goals.

Ocean Star NewsOcean Star NewsThe number of visitors to the Ocean Star during the first six

months of 2010 totaled more than 18,600, including group toursand individual visitors. “This is an amazing rebound since HurricaneIke,” said Ocean Star Operations Director Lisa Lisinicchia, “andexceeds 2008’s figures, now the second highest attendance, whenmore than 18,350 people visited the Ocean Star during the same timeperiod.”

The number of tours and visitors to the Ocean Star was strongduring the second quarter with multiple visits by ExxonMobiltotaling nearly 200 employees in June, July and August. More than100 employees of Halliburton toured the museum during July andabout 130 BP Americas employees toured the museum in June.

Participation in Family Day activities also increased, with more

than 30 in attendance for the Rigs to Reefs activity in July and about50 taking part in the Working Under Water program in August.Among student tours, Galveston ISD’s Summer Island AdventureCamp program resulted in about 230 students touring the rig duringseveral days in July.

IPAA will bring 55 people for a tour of the museum and 38 people from Duke University will visit and tour the Ocean Star inOctober.

A Career Fair is scheduled on the rig on Nov. 17.Rentals of the audio “wands” have increased significantly since

the museum began offering audio tours in 2008. Numerous groupsscheduled to tour the museum during the next several months haverequested audio tours.

Numerous exhibits and displays on the Ocean Star have beenupgraded or renovated as well as new exhibits installed sinceHurricane Ike in 2008. The process is continuing with several moreexhibit upgrades in progress as well as a few new displays in the concept phase.

Members of the OCS Advisory Board and their spouses touredthe Ocean Star earlier this year and met to discuss a possible exhibitabout Landmen. Several members returned to the Ocean Star inSeptember to further those discussions and provide potential ideasabout an exhibit.

FMC Technologies volunteered to assist with models of subseawellheads, manifolds, etc. for the seascape exhibit to illustrate how asubsea field would be laid out and connected to a floating productionunit such as the new Perdido spar model or the model of theKizomba floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit.FMC will assist with providing information about the subsea equipment. OEC Executive Director Sandra Mourton met with

long-time OEC supporter Ken Fread with FMC about the project.Another exhibit upgrade in progress is the geological display.

Lone Star Exhibits is fabricating a new museum quality display forthe fossil rubbings to replace the older exhibit. Additionally JeffreyNunnely, Chief Geologist for Marathon Oil Corporation, is assisting OEC with graphics for the display’s geological timeline.

Teachers at a facilitators conference in Juneillustrate the concept of liquefied natural gas(LNG) by putting balloons in cold water tocontract the gas and then in hot water toexpand the gas.

Facilitators’ conferenceheld on Ocean Star

As a part of the collaboration between the Foundation forEnergy Education and the Offshore Energy Center, OEC held aFacilitators Conference at the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling RigMuseum and Education Center in Galveston June 27-29 for teachersfrom the ten target areas of the partnership. This conference, includingfood and lodging, was free to the participants with OEC bearing allcosts. There were 16 participants at the three-day session.

The teachers were trained on activities in the Project E3:Expanding Energy Education guidebook, the Knowledge Box andPlaying With Petroleum Kit. Upon completion of the workshop, thenewly trained facilitators will be provided a Knowledge Box for

distribution in their region and all materials necessary to conduct aworkshop. Playing With Petroleum Kits will be provided as inventoryallows. In addition, the teachers will receive a stipend for conductingworkshops on behalf of the partnership.

The evaluations completed by the teachers attending the conference included positive comments and reinforced OEC’sEducation Outreach programs and the need for quality teacherworkshops and educational materials and sources in earth science.

Not only will these teachers have an impact on their studentsbut these trained facilitators will hold workshops in their regions forother teachers. In fact, two of the teachers have already conductedworkshops, including Theresa Lloyd at Waco ISD August 28, andJennie Knapp from Little Cypress-Mauriceville ISD in Orange, TXon Sept. 23 at the Region 5 education center.

OEC’s Mobile Offshore Learning Unit(MOLU) was featured at the Permian BasinPetroleum Museum in Midland, TX from Sept. 27 – Oct. 1 thanks to a grant fromExxonMobil. Petroleum Museum EducationDirector Brenda Rathjen, an OEC trainedfaci l i tator, invi ted schools from theMidland/Odessa area to visit the museum androtate through the MOLU. OEC ExecutiveDirector Sandra Mourton visited thePetroleum Museum on September 28 for atour and to meet with the event’s funders.

In addition, the Foundation for EnergyEducation is sponsoring MOLU visits to theTyler/Kilgore area Sept. 13-17; Amarillo Oct.4-8; and San Antonio Nov. 1-5. OEC and theFoundation formed the partnership to promoteOEC’s education outreach programs, focusingon the MOLU.

In August, the MOLU was set up atConocoPhillips in Houston as part of the company’s Bring the Future to Work program.Employees brought their children to rotatethrough the MOLU. About 150 children andtheir parents toured the exhibit.

Knowledge Boxes (KB) and Playing With Petroleum (PWP) Kits.The number of workshops has grown as well. Companies sponsoringnew Knowledge Boxes include ConocoPhillips (2); Baker Hughes(4); Superior Energy (4) and Chevron (1). Companies sponsoringnew PWP Kits are Global Industries (1); ConocoPhillips (2) andFMC Technologies (1).

Knowledge Box workshops scheduled the remainder of 2010 areset for Oct. 16 and November 20. Playing With Petroleum work-shops remaining this year are scheduled for Oct. 9 and Dec. 11. Theworkshops will be conducted at the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling RigMuseum and Education Center in Galveston. Workshop sponsorsare BP, Baker Hughes, Chevron, FMC Technologies, GlobalIndustries, Noble Energy, Superior Energy Services, andTidewater.

Thanks to the numerous sponsors, workshop participants willreceive free admission to the museum, a complimentary guided touralong with a light breakfast, lunch, Project E3 teacher guide and atravel stipend depending upon availability. Each participant will alsoreceive six CPE hours and will be able to utilize the Knowledge Box

or Playing With Petroleum Kit for up to a 30 day period in theirclassrooms at no charge. The workshops are approved for six hoursof TEEAC credit.

Additionally, OEC will be conducting two three-hour work-shops at the upcoming CAST (Conference for the Advancement ofScience Teachers) Nov. 11-13 in Houston. One workshop will befacilitated by OEC Education Director Doris Tomas, the other byone of OEC’s facilitators, Kirah Diaz.

As of mid-August, OEC had conducted 23 workshops, 10 ofthem held aboard the Ocean Star and 13 conducted offsite at otherlocations. More than 400 teachers attended the workshops, withpotentially more than 31,000 students impacted in one year.

Five workshops for teachers of gifted and talented students weresponsored by ConocoPhillips and Chevron. Two workshops wereheld at Shell’s Woodcreek facility in Houston and one each was heldat Goose Creek ISD in Baytown, Sinclair Elementary School inHouston and at Ben Brook Elementary School in Houston. Twomore gifted and talented teacher workshops were held at theThompson Center in Austin, TX as part of the 10th AnnualEnvironmental Heath Science Summer Institute in July. The conference was attended by science educators from throughoutTexas. The Texas Association for Gifted and Talented (TAGT)recently approved the OEC’s GT workshops for credit towards theTAGT Awareness Certificate.

Knowledge Box, Playing With Petroleum Kits growing

Teachers of gifted and talented students at one of five workshops sponsored byConocoPhillips and Chevron review materials available in the Knowledge Boxsponsored by Tidewater.

OEC participating in Energy QuestPresented by the World Affairs Council of Houston, Energy Quest is

a quiz game to test students’ knowledge of the global energy industry.The competition, scheduled for Oct. 29 at the Sheraton HoustonBrookhollow on the North Loop West in Houston, is open to all highschool students and is played in four rounds of 20 questions each.

Round 1 of the competition will focus on exploration, geographyand geophysics. Round 2 will include questions on production, refiningand remediation. Round 3 questions will include transportation, marketsand geo-politics and the final Round 4 will feature questions about newtechnologies and renewable energy. Questions will be compiled fromvarious energy-related websites and articles.

The winning team will receive a trophy and the winning school willreceive a $1,000 cash prize.

OEC is participating as a sponsor and will help provide informationfor the questions as well as backup sources of the information. Othersponsors include PESA, Anadarko, Halliburton, Schlumberger,DNV, Ernst & Young, GDF Suez, AAPG, IPAA and Marathon OilCorporation.
