Housing & Residence Life continues to build on its strengths as a premier living learning community. Our approach is to provide students an inclusive residential experience in a safe, well-maintained community that supports academic excellence, fosters personal development, and promotes student success. Studies show that students who live on-campus are more likely to have a higher grade point average, take less time to earn a degree, and overall are more satisfied with their college experience. We combine traditional approaches with innovative methods to appeal to our students.
Reaching today’s student requires both flexibility and responsiveness as we continue to fine tune our approach. Through community experiences, we provide students the opportunity for interpersonal interactions with peers, faculty and staff members; initiatives to enhance student learning and expand the educational experience; and access to campus resources. In addition, renovations to facilities, engaging social media channels and changing technologies enhance our ability to meet the needs of our students.
Being a part of the on-campus community means more than just a place to sleep. Thanks to a great team of staff members devoted to serving our students, we are here to provide the resources and atmosphere to launch students on their way to success.
We are excited to welcome new and returning students to the Monarch family. I look forward to meeting you and best wishes in your educational pursuits!
Sincerely,
Dr. April Hicks Konvalinka Executive Director
Welcome.

Connecting With Your Community
Introductory Floor Meetings | August 26 & August 28
This is the first formal opportunity for you to connect with your resident assistant (RA) and other residence hall staff members who will help you throughout the year. In these required meetings, you will be introduced to community standards, leadership opportunities and much more useful information.
Getting Involved
The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is a visible and active organization that will enhance your experience while living on-campus. RHA is a voice for and of the students, serves as an advocate for positive and effective change within the residential campus community, engages residents through programs, and provides leadership development opportunities. To learn more about RHA or to get involved, email [email protected]. There are also opportunities to get involved with Community Council.
Connecting With Your Roommate/Peers
We believe in building inclusive communities in each residence hall. Within the first few weeks, you will have the opportunity to sit down and discuss how you and your roommate(s) will live together in a fun and engaging environment.

Study Rooms, Lounges and Community Learning Centers (CLCs)
Need a quiet place to study or want to hang out with friends? Check out our study rooms, which are located in each residential community. Lobby and floor lounges are provided to residents and their visitors for studying, meetings, programs and community-building activities. Contact your front desk staff for further information on scheduling/reserving these areas.
Laundry Facilities
You will have 30 loads of laundry (one wash and one dry) or 60 individual transactions per semester using your ODU ID card. Unused laundry loads carry over from the fall to spring semester.
Maintenance Requests
You can submit a maintenance request within the residence hall with just a click of a button. Maintenance Direct is available 24/7 and is your go-to online resource for submitting non-emergency work requests.
Bicycle Registration
Planning to use your bike? ODU offers free bicycle registration. Registering your bicycle can reduce the risk of your bicycle being stolen, and greatly increases the chance of your bicycle being recovered in case it does go missing. Remember to register your bike with the ODU Police Department.
Cable TV & Campus Movie Channel
Enjoy an extensive Cable TV package and catch all your favorite entertainment, news, sports, foreign language and educational channel. Or, enjoy a free movie using the ODU Movie Channel.
Front Desk Services
Have a question? Desk Receptionists (also known as DRs) can help you check out hall equipment, distribute loaner keys and assist with general questions.
Representatives from Information Technology Services (ITS) will be available to answer your tech questions and help with Internet and cable TV setup during move-in. They can also help you download McAfee anti-virus software to your
computer at no cost to you. Look for them on site, or contact (757) 683-3192.

Folks to Know
Resident Assistants (RAs) are responsible for health, safety and community development in the residence halls. They want to get to know you, help get you connected to the university, and provide opportunities for social and academic support in the residence halls.
Desk Receptionists (DRs) staff the front desks of each residential building during the day. They answer phones, sort and notify residents when packages arrive, checkout spare keys for lock-outs, and checkout residential equipment.
Night Desk Receptionists (NDRs) staff the front desks of each residential building during the nighttime hours. They answer residential phones, checkout spare keys for lock-outs, and conduct rounds of the building.
Peer Mentors (PMs) staff Living-Learning Communities. They provide extra academic support through intentional outreach, academic-based programming and bridging the gap between students, and faculty in the residence halls.
Assistant Hall Directors (AHDs) are graduate student staff, typically in the Higher Education program. They provide support to the Residence Hall Directors in the daily management of a residential building(s): this includes management of the residence halls’ front desks, mail, and key control, facilitating student conduct meetings, on-call duties, supervision of RAs, and programmatic support.
Residence Hall Directors (RHDs) are master’s degree-level professionals responsible for the daily management of a building(s). Their role is to support the learning of students in their area, in addition to supporting student health and safety. This includes supervision of RAs and AHDs, facilitating student conduct meetings, addressing student concerns, on-call duties, coordinating health and safety inspections/fire drills, and community development in the hall.
There are lots of folks from Housing & Residence Life to get to know while living on-campus. Here’s a brief look at who they are and how they can support you!
