Who should attend Ocean County Vocational Technical School?The Ocean County Vocational Technical School offers career majors in over 30 areas for students going on to college or direct-ly to the world of work. OCVTS works hand-in-hand with sending schools to provide a complete education for high school stu-dents. Students may attend during their junior and senior year, as well as post graduate. The students attend “home school” forhalf a day and are transported to the vocational center for the other half. Ties are maintained with the home school where theypursue academic classes, take part in sports or other extracurricular activities, and graduate. Guidance and career counselingservices are jointly provided by the vocational school and the home school. Students receive a certificate from OCVTS, as wellas a high school diploma from their home school.

Are there prerequisites to apply to Ocean County Vocational Technical School?In order to be enrolled at the Ocean County Vocational Technical School, a student must receive a recommendation fromhis/her counselor. The student should have successfully completed the tenth grade to enter any of the two year courses. Allcosmetology applicants will be required to take an entrance exam and acceptance will be based on the results of this exam.Grades and attendance may be reviewed prior to acceptance. Additional application forms are available from the home schoolguidance counselor, the Ocean County Vocational Technical School Student Services and Admissions Department, and careercounselors at each OCVTS center.

What are Applied Academics?The Ocean County Vocational Technical School provides Applied Academics to all students on a weekly basis. AppliedAcademics teachers are highly qualified in the areas of Math and English. Vocational programs are provided academicinstruction in Math and English as it relates to the trade at hand and also support student's success on state standardizedtesting (HSPA). Concepts are delivered and assessed by the Applied Academics teachers, and are supported in the shop setting.

What is a Tech Prep Agreement?Tech Prep is short for "Technical Preparation." It is a nationally recognized program which focuses on providing a meaningfuleducation and career preparation for a large number of high school students whose immediate educational goals followinghigh school include an associate degree at a community college or post secondary institution.The Ocean County Vocational Technical School has embraced the Tech Prep philosophy, expanding it to include both full andpart-time programs. Agreements are in place with more than ten institutions allowing students the opportunity to earn collegecredits. This gives students a jump start on a college education and prevents the duplication of course work at the college level.The following programs offer Tech Prep opportunities:

Life’s a Journey...Better get good directions

Audio for Electronic Media (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours Navy LakehurstThis program combines both art and science in a field that requires specializedtechnical knowledge. Students will be guided through the process of capturingsound (audio) and storing it in both the digital and analog mediums for reproduc-tion. Students will learn recording technology through classroom instruction andapplication of these techniques using professional recording equipment at theschool's multiple studio recording facility. The program will be taught by profes-sionals from the recording industry through real recording sessions with artistsfrom many musical genres including commercials and voice over production.Curriculum content will cover the following: multimedia production, physics ofsound, acoustics, multi-track recording/digital audio technology, MusicalInstrument Digital Interface (MIDI) and musical instrument technology, designand application of microphones, computer digital editing and mastering, the audioproduction console, signal processors, audio for visual production and post pro-duction, the music business and sound reinforcement (concert sound). A strongfoundation in math and science, as well as a pre-admission interview with instruc-tors, is recommended for candidates pursuing enrollment. A Tech Prep agreementwith Ocean County College enables students to obtain nine college credits for suc-cessful completion of the curriculum.

Graphic Design Technology (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours BrickThe GDT program emphasizes preparation for both employment and continuingeducation at a post secondary institution, and is a Tech Prep program. Post sec-ondary students have the option to attend full-time, two sessions per day, for anintensive completion of the program in a single year. Students select from twelveten-week courses consisting of traditional and digital skills required in various visu-al art and communication careers. Art Courses cover the creation of computerized art for print production, video, andelectronic media. Includes: Art for Reproduction, Electronic Art and Design, Intro toDigital Video, and Animation and Web Design.Photography Courses cover the techniques of traditional and digital photographyin advertising, portraiture, and fine art. Includes: Digital Photography, DesktopPublishing, Wet Lab Photography, and Studio Lighting.Printing Courses emphasize the use of current technologies in printing andgraphic reproduction. Includes: Graphic Techniques, Press Operation, ScreenPrinting, and Production Graphics.

Architectural/Engineering Design (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours BrickThis course is for high school and post secondary students interested in architec-tural and related civil engineering careers. Skills for drafting and designing archi-tectural, civil engineering and mechanical systems are emphasized. Design of res-idential structure is stressed in the first year. The second year concentrates oncommercial design and civil engineering. Computer aided drafting and design isextensively utilized. The program is certified by the American Design DraftingAssociation. A Tech Prep agreement is in place with Mercer County College,enabling students to receive 6 college credits obtained through a challenge exam.An agreement with Ocean County College awards 5 credits based on successfulcompletion of the OCVTS curriculum.

A+ Certification1 year/450 hours Toms RiverThis course prepares students for the A+ Certification Exam in computer repairtechnology. The increased demand for qualified PC technicians has made A+Certification a must for improved job opportunities and advancement in the worldof PC repair and maintenance. A general foundation in electronics and/or comput-ers is strongly recommended.

Computer Service Repair 1 year/450 hours Toms RiverThis program is a survey course designed to prepare students with a diversifiedcomputer background. The goal is to supply the necessary information needed toprepare students for the A+/ Net+ Certification or other related technology cours-es. The student will learn the theory of operation, assembly, and troubleshootingof the IBM PC clone. In addition, the course will include an introduction to com-puter LANs and networking. The course targets entry level skills leading to acareer in the computer service market. Robotics studies are also included throughthe use of a student computer build kit.

Computer Science (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours Toms RiverThis course provides students with opportunities for advanced studies in informa-tion technology. The program is open to students who plan on pursuing collegedegrees in preparation for careers as system engineers, computer programmers,information technology managers, or other technology related specialties. Topicscovered in the course include: introduction to information systems and computerapplications, introduction to problem solving and program design, Internet organi-zation and applications, object oriented design and programming using VisualBASIC, and Java, and web site design and development using HTML, JavaScript,and PHP. The course may include internships with area businesses. Multimediaapplications, high speed Internet access, and state-of-the-art equipment and tech-nology are available to students. High school students are eligible to receive 12college credits through a Tech Prep agreement with Ocean County College. Pre-requisites include familiarity with desktop computers standard desktop applicationslike Word and Excel, and the Internet.

Construction Trades

Health TechnologiesDental Assisting 1 year/450 hours Toms RiverThis program teaches four-handed dentistry and lab skills, prevention techniques,operative treatment, and specialty areas. A clinical experience in a dental office isa required part of the program. Students must provide transportation to the clinicalsite. The course provides preparation for students interested in dental careerssuch as dental hygienist, lab technician, x-ray technician, and dentist, as well asfor those interested in immediate employment as a dental assistant. Additionalcertification allows students to become certified or registered assistants licensedto perform oral procedures under the supervision of a dentist. Word processingskills are strongly recommended. High school seniors are given priority for admis-sions to this course.

Health and Fitness Technology (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours Toms RiverThis course introduces students to the fields of fitness, personal training, nutrition,and physical rehabilitative therapy through preparation as an entry level personaltrainer, fitness technician, or group fitness instructor. Course outline includesbasics in human anatomy, exercise physiology, and kinesiology, as well as exer-cise program design and nutrition. Wellness/fitness workers and physical therapyaides are skilled workers employed in fitness centers, corporate wellness

programs, hospitals, sports medicine clinics, andrehabilitation centers. A clinical experience isoffered in the second year, where studentsmay work in fitness, wellness, and rehabilitativesettings.

Medical Assistant (Tech Prep) 2 years/900 hours Toms RiverThis program emphasizes physician assisting skills. It is divided into two years, anadministrative year and a clinical year. A student may begin the program at thebeginning of either year. The curriculum covers medical terminology and abbrevi-ations, medical law and ethics, insurance billing and coding, medical history tak-ing, computerized scheduling, in-depth computerized software (Medisoft), infectioncontrol, vital signs, electrocardiograms, laboratory procedures including urinalysis,Strep tests, capillary sticks and venipuncture techniques. Students will learn toassist the physician with special procedures and minor surgery. Proper communi-cations skills and professionalism will be emphasized. Upon completion of the twoyear program, students may receive up to 7 college credits at Ocean CountyCollege (OCC) in the Allied Health Programs. Students may pursue their certifica-tion as a medical assistant or continue studies for radiology technician, licensedpractical or registered nurse, health information technologist, billing and codingspecialist, and many other healthcare careers.

Medical Skills and Related Health Careers2 years/900 hours Toms RiverThe first year provides an exploration of several health career options. Thecurriculum covers anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and key conceptsin health care such as professionalism and ethics. Basic patient care skills such asbody mechanics, bed making, transferring patients, and personal care includingfeeding, bathing, and oral care, are covered. A clinical experience is provided at along-term care facility. The second year is geared toward preparing the student to become a CertifiedNurse Assistant. The curriculum and clinical experiences are mandated by theState Department of Health and Senior Services. Upon successful completion ofthe 90 hour program the student may take the two part state exam to earn theircertification as a Nurse Aide and may qualify for a work-study program offeredthrough OCVTS. The Certified Nurse Aide curriculum is a good foundation to helpprepare students for a career path in Nursing. Other components of the classinclude membership in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), a stu-dent organization emphasizing professionalism and leadership skills for studentswho are pursuing a health career.

Building Construction Technology2 years/900 hours BrickThis program teaches theory and application of techniques used in the buildingtrades. The program will include the following: skills in framing, roofing, sheathing,siding, door and window installation, drywall installation, trim work and concrete blockconstruction. Students who complete the program are qualified for employment ormay become apprentices through Carpenter’s Local 2018.

Custom Cabinetmaking2 years/900 hours JacksonThis program develops skills in the operation of a varietyof woodworking machines and hand tools. Students learnconstruction and fabrication of kitchen cabinetry, bath-room vanities, custom furniture, moldings, and all typesof custom designed wood decoration.

Electrical Trades 2 years/900 hours JacksonThis program emphasizes the fundamental theory and application of electrical cir-cuits, measuring instruments, transformers, electric motors, and various types ofswitching devices for power, lighting, and security. The program covers skills incommercial and residential wiring and industrial motor control. CooperativeIndustrial Education opportunities and transition assistance into apprenticeshipand work placement are integral to this program.Upon successful completion of this two year program students will receiveadvance standing in the OCVTS Adult Education Division apprenticeship program.

Electrical Trades/Integrated Cabling Technology2 years/900 hours Toms RiverThe scope of this course deals with residential and light commercial electricalwiring, as well as voice, data, and video cabling. The fundamental theory andapplication of circuits, test equipment, transformers, motors, and various types ofcontrol devices for power, lighting, and security are emphasized. Load calculationsfor residences and small commercial buildings will be taught. Code requirementsand installation methods for various types of cables, conduits (both flexible and

non-flexible), and service equipment will be addressed. A basic introduction to theNational Electrical Code, as applied to residential and light commercial wiring, willalso be part of the program. Electrical theory, up to and including motors, trans-formers, and generators has been added to the program. Voice, data, and videocabling skills, as well as basic telecommunications theory, will be explored. Fiberoptic theory, termination, and testing is also included. The proper use of tools andsafe industry work practices are stressed. Certificates will be presented to studentswho pass appropriate exams for copper and fiber cabling. Cooperative IndustrialEducation opportunities and transition assistance into apprenticeship training andwork placement are integral to this program.Upon successful completion of thistwo year program students will receive advance standing in the OCVTS AdultEducation Division apprenticeship program.

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioningand Refrigeration (HVAC-R)2 years/900 hours BrickStudents will learn basic concepts necessary to install, repair, and maintain heat-ing, air conditioning, and commercial refrigeration equipment. Basic theory andoperation of mechanical components and electrical controls will also be covered.The Environmental Protection Agency Refrigerant Certification Exam is given uponcompletion of the program. Upon successful completion of this two year program students will receiveadvance standing in the OCVTS Adult Education Division apprenticeship program.

Welding2 years/900 hours Toms RiverThe welding program provides students with hands-on instruction in a variety ofwelding and metal fabrication processes. Students learn techniques in shieldedmetal arc, gas metal arc, gas tungsten arc, and flux cored arc welding. Weldingrelated cutting processes covered include oxy-fuel gas and plasma arc cutting.Upon completion students are prepared for careers in construction, fabrication,and repair of industrial and transportation equipment including cars, ships, pleas-ure crafts, and aircraft. They are also qualified for employment in the area of struc-tural welding including the fabrication of bridges, steel structures, pipelines, andboilers. Area industries provide students with work-based welding experience. Studentsare encouraged to become members of the American Welding Society (AWS) andsuccessful graduates may receive AWS Certification.

Child Care Professions (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours BrickThis Tech Prep program teaches skills in caring for young children, infant throughpre-school age, in preparation for positions as teacher assistants in child care cen-ters. Students perform health, safety, food service, and housekeeping activities;plan and guide a developmentally appropriate curriculum; supervise daily routinesof young children; and create instructional games and visual aids. Experiencesupervising and guiding pre-schoolers, ages 3-5, in a nursery school environmentemphasizes teaching techniques and positive behavior guidelines. Program grad-uates are eligible for the Child Development Associate (CDA), a nationally recog-nized credential equivalent to group teacher certification. Graduates may continuetheir education in the early childhood field through college courses leading to NewJersey teacher certification. A Tech Prep agreement with Ocean County Collegeenables qualified students to receive three college credits.

Cosmetology (Tech Prep) Brick/Jackson/2 years/1000 hours Toms River/PinelandsThis Tech Prep program teaches skills and the knowledge necessary to pass theNew Jersey State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam. The skills taught relateto the major areas of instruction including hair services, skin and nail services,business management, and barbering. In school clinical experiences providehands-on training. High school and adult applicants will be required to pass a writ-ten examination for admission. Good attendance is critical for completion of hourlyrequirements to sit for licensing exam. Adults may attend cosmetology programsfull-time between 2-7 PM daily or in the evening (Mon, Tues, Thurs). See full-time adult programs for description. A Tech Prep agreement with Ocean County College enables students to receiveup to 12 college credits towards a small business management certificate uponsuccessful completion of the New Jersey State Cosmetology Board.

Culinary Arts (Tech Prep) 2 years/900 hours BrickThis Tech Prep program provides students with experience in the preparation,service, and management tasks involved in the food service industry. Areas of con-centration include safety, sanitation, food preparation, advanced food preparation,

commercial baking, advanced baking, dining room service, and management.Students will also gain practical experience by operating a dining and banquetfacility. Tech Prep agreements with the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic CapeCommunity College, Johnson & Wales University, and Brookdale CommunityCollege have been established to give our culinary graduates an opportunity toearn advanced college credits while enrolled in this program.

Fashion Merchandising/Design (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours BrickStudents will develop skills in the fields of retail sales, and fashion design. Fashionterminology, trends, research, buying, advertising, textile science, and fashionillustration will be taught through hands-on experiences and job shadowing activi-ties. Second year students have the opportunity to participate in an on-the-jobwork study experience.Students have an opportunity to earn college credits through a Tech Prep agree-ment with Brookdale Community College in Merchandising and Burlington CountyCollege in Design.

Law and Public Safety (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours WaretownThis Tech Prep program explores the role of law and public safety in the UnitedStates and career opportunities in various law enforcement agencies. The func-tions and day-to-day activities of law and public safety professionals from local,county, state and federal agencies will be examined. Writing and language skillsas they apply to analytical report writing and recording of evidence are stressed. Astrong background in Social Studies and a 10th grade reading level are recom-mended.Successful completion of this two year program will provide 15 high school creditsand up to 12 college credits through an agreement with Ocean County College.Students are also eligible for First Responder certification.

Marine/EnvironmentalMarine Science I 1 year/450 hours ManahawkinThe program will emphasize marine biology, oceanography, and coastal ecology.Additional units in maritime careers and navigation will be conducted. This is ahands-on intensive course. Various field and vessel trips will be conducted, includ-ing Barnegat Bay, Cattus Island, and NJ State Parks. Students must have com-pleted Biology and Algebra I for admissions.

Marine Science II1 year/450 hours ManahawkinThe second year of the Marine Science program builds on what was learned inMarine Science I. The second year course is an environmentally based program.Topics covered include marine ecosystems, ecology (ocean and land), microbiol-ogy, Pinelands ecology, and government regulations. The environmentally basedprogram utilizes a hands-on approach. Students will attend various field and ves-sel trips including New Jersey State Parks, Ocean County Park, and Barnegat Bay.Students will conduct research projects and can be qualify for internship inlaboratories, field work, environmental agencies, pollution control or industry.Students must have completed Chemistry and must have completed or must beconcurrently taking Algebra II.

Marine Trades 2 years/900 hours Toms RiverNavigation, marine electronics, boat handling, and boat safety have been added tothis long running program. Students will develop skills in marine engine and fiber-glass repair, marine electrical systems, and boat and trailer rigging. Curriculumincludes preparation for the US Coast Guard Captain's licensing program. The pro-gram is based at our Toms River Center and uses our waterfront facilities wherestudents operate and maintain vessels.

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences2 years/900 hours JacksonThis program will prepare students to enter the growing and profitable fields ofagribusiness and environmental concerns. It combines knowledge of the ecologyof living systems with the study of environmentally safe practices in the areas oflandscape design and construction, turf management, aquatic gardening, irriga-tion, natural resource management, and integrated pest management. Studentswill have access to cutting edge technology, field work, and research practicesthrough a partnership established with Rutgers Center for Turf Grass Science.Students will utilize the OCVTS greenhouse and land laboratory for their practicalapplications. Students will benefit from partnerships with local industry, participatein site internships, and attend professional seminars, conferences, and industrytrade shows. Extensive use of computer technology will be emphasized, along withan introduction to GPS/GIS technology. Active participation in FFA, the nationalstudent organization that is dedicated to making a positive difference in the livesof students by developing their potential for leadership, personal growth, andcareer success through agricultural education, is encouraged.

Transportation TechnologiesAutomotive and Diesel Engine Technology2 years/900 hours JacksonThis program explores the fundamentals of engine technology with a completemachining curriculum for both gas and diesel engines. Cylinder boring, completecylinder head rebuilding, and repair comprise the machining technology elementsof the curriculum. Students also study in-vehicle repairs covering complete enginerepairs, brakes, steering, and suspensions, as well as alternative fuel systems.

Automotive Technology (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours Brick/Jackson/WaretownThe student will be introduced to major concepts and theories of automotive main-tenance, service, and repairs on modern automobiles. This program is also evalu-ated by NATEF and certified by The National Institute for ASE. The following sub-jects are ASE approved: engine repair, engine performance, electrical/electronicsystems, brakes, suspension, and steering. Upon completion students are pre-pared to take ASE certification tests. This course will prepare students for the sec-ond stage of a 2+2 Tech Prep program in conjunction with Brookdale CommunityCollege and the Chrysler Apprenticeship Program.

Aviation Aerospace Technology (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours Navy LakehurstThis two year program explores a multitude of areas related to aviation and theaerospace industry. It is strongly recommended for the student with an avid inter-est in aviation and aerospace technology who wishes to continue his or her edu-cation after high school. Highly motivated activities relating to aircraft design andconstruction, as well as related field trips and private pilot preparation, are integral

to this program. Elements of the Federal AviationAdministration (FAA) certified curriculum will beused to present concepts of weight and balanceand physics. Students will be exposed to all aircraft

systems, control tower operations, and ground operations. Several opportunities togain flight experience through the Mercer County Community College aviation pro-gram are made available to the students. Upon successful completion of thiscourse, students will be awarded six credits towards Mercer County CommunityCollege Flight Tech Program. Students may continue their education at MercerCounty Community College or four year institutions such as Embry RiddleAeronautical University or Florida Institute of Technology.

Collision Repair2 years/900 hours JacksonThis NATEF/ASE certified program provides students with the skills and knowl-edge required by the Collision Repair Industry. Using the Inter-Industry Conferenceon Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) curriculum, students learn body repair, refinish-ing, and M.I.G. welding techniques. Advanced students learn computerized esti-mating and frame and unibody alignment procedures using laser measuring tech-nology. Students are provided with transition services to move into advanced edu-cation or apprenticeship programs upon graduation.

Motorsports Technology2 years/900 hours JacksonThis course teaches skills needed for small engine maintenance and repair, twoand four cycle theory, motorcycle maintenance and repair, engine repair, diagnos-tic testing and rebuilding, drive train maintenance and repair, fabricating, and gasand electric welding.

A career academy is an integrated approach to learning which lets students develop a career plan and educational pathway which focuses on a spe-cific career major. Students receive a rigorous four-year college preparatory academic program which fulfills all requirements for high school gradu-ation and admission to competitive colleges and universities.The curriculum is driven by New Jersey Core Content Curriculum Standards. It provideslearning opportunities at affiliated colleges as well as opportunities for externships and mentorships with local companies, business and industry.

Students are selected from applications through a competitive process and enter at the ninth grade level. Applicants must reside in Ocean County tobe eligible for admission. All school districts in Ocean County are eligible to participate in sending applications to the programs.

Performing Arts AcademyTheater, Dance or Vocal MusicFull-Time Navy LakehurstThis full-time school is geared toward students who wish to excel in the PerformingArts. This specialized high school program was developed specifically for theyoung artist-in-training. The school offers intense studies in theater, dance, andvoice. Courses include concentration in technical theater, acting techniques,directing, ballet technique, modern technique, jazz technique, choreography,music theory, vocal health, song preparation, and arts history (music, dance, the-ater), along with all of the academic requirements for a high school diploma. Thestudents will be encouraged to continue their education in the arts after graduation,but will also be given the tools and resources to audition for professional compa-nies. Students interested in a competitive and challenging environment must completethe necessary application process, which includes an entrance exam and audition(applicants will be contacted with specific information regarding the exam andaudition). Students interested in this high school should contact their middle schoolguidance counselor for further application information, as well as attend an infor-mation session.

Marine Academy of Technology andEnvironmental Science (MATES)Full-Time ManahawkinMATES is a specialized high school developed around the marine and environ-mental science theme. MATES is geared toward students who wish to concentratetheir studies in the areas of math and science.A rigorous academic course of study instructed at the honors level satisfies all ofthe state requirements necessary for high school graduation and beyond. Studentsthat are eligible may also take college level courses. The opportunity for participa-tion in externships in laboratories, field work, and industry will be made availableto students during their junior and senior years. Audio for Electronic Media (Tech Prep)2 years/900 hours Navy LakehurstThis program combines both art and science in a field that requires specializedtechnical knowledge. Students will be guided through the process of capturingsound (audio) and storing it in both the digital and analog mediums for reproduc-tion. Students will learn recording technology through classroom instruction andapplication of these techniques using professional recording equipment at theschool's multiple studio recording facility. The program will be taught by profes-sionals from the recording industry through real recording sessions with artistsfrom many musical genres including commercials and voice over production.Curriculum content will cover the following: multimedia production, physics ofsound, acoustics, multi-track recording/digital audio technology, MusicalInstrument Digital Interface (MIDI) and musical instrument technology, design andapplication of microphones, computer digital editing and mastering, the audio pro-duction console, signal processors, audio for visual production and post produc-tion, the music business, and sound reinforcement (concert sound). A strong foun-dation in math and science is recommended as well as a recommendation inter-view with instructors for candidates pursuing enrollment. A Tech Prep agreementwith Ocean County College enables students to obtain nine college credits for suc-cessful completion of the curriculum.

Cosmetology (Tech Prep)10 months, 5 days a week, 2-7PM, Brick oorr20 months, Mon, Tues, Thurs 5:00PM-9:30PM, Toms RiverThis program teaches skills and the knowledge necessary to pass the New JerseyState Board of Cosmetology licensing exam. The skills taught relate to the majorareas of instruction including hair services, skin and nail services, business man-agement, and barbering. In school clinical experiences provide hands-on training.A high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required andapplicants will be required to pass a written examination for admission. Goodattendance is critical for completion of hourly requirements to sit for licensingexam. A Tech Prep agreement with Ocean County College enables students toreceive up to 12 college credits towards a small business management certificateupon successful completion of the New Jersey State Cosmetology Board exam.

Culinary Arts (Tech Prep)1 year/900 hours Navy LakehurstThis program provides students with experience in the preparation, service, andmanagement tasks involved in the food service industry. Areas of concentrationinclude safety, sanitation, food preparation, commercial baking, advanced baking,table skills, and dining room management. Students will gain practical experienceby operating a dining and banquet facility at Lakehurst Naval Air EngineeringStation (NAES). Tech Prep agreements with the Academy of Culinary Arts ofAtlantic Cape Community College, Johnson & Wales University, and BrookdaleCommunity College have been established to give our culinary graduates anopportunity to earn advanced college credit whileenrolled in this program. A placement test isrequired for all applicants entering this challeng-ing program. Personal transportation is required.

Practical Nursing44 weeks Toms RiverThis program consists of lecture and clinical experiences to educate students tocare for acute, sub-acute, chronically ill, and convalescent patients. It is regulatedby the State Board of Nursing and prepares students for the state licensing exam-ination. Classroom theory and clinical experience are equitable in the number ofhours required in the course. Students who successfully complete the programand pass the state licensing examination can find employment in hospitals, nurs-ing homes, industry, clinics, private homes, and public and federal health agen-cies. Curriculum includes the study of anatomy and physiology, nutrition and diettherapy, pharmacology, medical/surgical nursing, geriatrics, maternity, pediatrics,psychiatric nursing, interpersonal relationship in nursing, maintaining records, andindependent study.

Post Secondary ProgramsPost secondary programs offer students several flexible options for those interested in career advancement, certification, or a new career direction.Daytime, twilight, or evening hours may be available. This can be an economical alternative to college and a shorter route to full-time employment.

Special ServicesEmployment OrientationThe Ocean County Vocational Technical School provides excellence in training forspecial needs children in Ocean County. We provide hands-on learning throughskills training, job shadowing/internships, Cooperative Education and vocationalexploration.

The Ocean County Vocational Technical School has six centers located through-out Ocean County. Classified students may apply for vocational technical trainingin the special needs program once they have entered eighth grade. All applicationsare made through the home school's child study team or guidance department.Special needs students are eligible to participate in the Employment OrientationProgram during grades 9-12.

Vocational Assessment PurposeThe Evaluation Unit is a work-oriented environment designed to help students ingrades 8-12 make a sound vocational selection by exploring the world of work rel-ative to definite vocational areas, determining general areas of vocational interestand aptitudes, and identifying an appropriate vocational program for the student inthe least restrictive environment.

Application ProcedureAll applications for vocational evaluation are made to the Office of SpecialServices. The student must be classified. The proper application form is complet-ed by the parent/guardian and the designated person at the home school and isforwarded to the Office of Special Services with all necessary data.

Students ServedUpon completion of the Vocational Assessment Program, a special needs studentmay be recommended for the Employment Orientation Program. (The term "spe-cial needs" refers to those students that have been classified by a child study teamat their home school.) Classified students often have disabilities that prevent themfrom succeeding in vocational programs designed for non-handicapped individu-als; therefore, our Employment Orientation Programs offer a variety of trade areasdesigned for the special needs student's success.

The Employment Orientation Program also provides services to a majority ofstudents with handicaps recognized by the New Jersey State Department ofEducation.

MainstreamingStudents in the Employment Orientation Program who exhibit strong interests andcompetencies in a specific vocational area may be placed in a regular vocationalprogram. The mainstreaming of special needs students from the EmploymentOrientation Program follows a carefully planned sequence to insure that the stu-dent is appropriately placed. Once a student placement has been made, continu-al follow-ups are conducted to insure that the student is progressing satisfactorily.

Mission StatementThe mission of the Ocean County Vocational Technical School system is to prepare students for job placement or further education leading to successful employment.
