Prepare Your Family for a Fire Emergency - By Mdewakanton Public Safety Director Greg Hayes

Every October, we focus on raising awareness of fire safety. Why October? In 1871, a majority of Chicago burned down when Mrs. O’Leary’s cow tipped over a candle. There’s no doubt why candles are one of our top safety concerns! Here are a few key tips to help keep your family safe:

Learn more at our Mdewakanton Public Safety (MPS) Annual Open House

Oct. 7 from 5-8pm We can answer all of your questions on medical, fire, and preparedness safety

issues for your family. Also, equipment demonstrations and fire truck rides.

Never leave candles unattended.

Smoking is the leading cause of fires.Do not toss cigarettes, lit matches and pipes.

CHECK your smoke detector monthly. Change the batteries at least once a year at a minimum.

Have a family escape plan.

How to Talk to Your Kids about BullyingParents have an important role to play in preventing bullying. With National Bullying Prevention Month in October, make an extra effort to do what you can to make sure your community and your kids are safe. You can:

Help your kids understand bullying. Talk about what bullying is and how to stand up to it safely. Tell them bullying is not okay, and make sure they know how to get help if they’re being bullied or have witnessed bullying.

Keep the lines of communication open. Check in with your children often, and take time to really listen to them. Get to know their friends, ask about school, and understand their concerns.

Encourage your kids to do what they love. Special activities, interests, and hobbies can boost confidence, help your children make friends, and protect them from bullying behavior.

Model how to treat others with kindness and respect. Your kids learn many of their behaviors from you. Talk the talk, but also walk the walk.

Start with questions that encourage deeper conversations: • What was one good thing that happened today? Any bad things?• What is lunch time like at your school? Who do you sit with? What do you talk about?• What is it like to ride the school bus?• What are you good at? What would do you like best about yourself?

Research indicates that kids look to parents and caregivers for help with tough situations. Even 15 minutes of conversation a day can help your kids feel comfortable coming to you with any problems.
