Page 1 October 8, 2017 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 8, 2017 The Parishes of MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia This week there was a terrible incident in Las Vegas. Many people were killed and many more injured and since I am writing this on Monday, all the details are not yet fully known; what is known is that this was yet another act of violence in our world with no rhyme or reason. We have a serious problem in our country with the ever -increasing level of violence and hatred and there seems to be no solution. Violence continues to be glorified in movies, video games and TV shows, while at the same time those who make money on these things call for gun control and peace. We have allowed anger to become a staple of our society in the way we speak to people we disagree with, and we have fostered a rationale to strike out at political opponents with pure contempt. After this latest attack, what will be our national response? There will be the inevitable cry for gun control, as if criminals care if you ban all guns anyway. Though I believe that we need to have appropriate gun measures, that reaction is typical of an overreaction to a situation. There will be a hailstorm of "tweets" as if they solve any problem and in fact often fuel more hatred as a response. I was not even surprised that the reaction of some people at the event was to turn on their phones not to call the police or their families, but to record the event. There will be expert after expert talking about what they believe causes such things to happen and of course there will be the call for prayer from the very people who spend their time trying to demean the notion of God and call all who believe in God as unenlightened and bigoted people. My question is to whom do they think we should pray? In the face of such events, we fail to see how hatred is feeding the minds and hearts of so many in our country and we are not addressing the roots of hatred. We have calls to be "nice" and to stop being "mean", but we fail to root out the vices in our society that feed sin; heck we are not even able to talk about sin. The evil in our world comes from our refusal to see the clear difference between what is good and what is bad. We fail to foster a profound sense of morality in our homes and with our families. We give in to the idea that everything is OK and that all things are equal. They are not! There is a difference in believing in God and not believing in God. There is a difference in building a home on prayer and the Christian values of love, forgiveness and compassion from the home that is built solely on secular wants and desires. For a person with faith in God, you are never alone; no problem is too great to overcome and there is a support system of people called the church. When people cut God and the church out of their lives, they leave off an important part of creating a good life. People often fail to recognize the importance of a church community and a close relationship with God under the guise of not needing to go to mass or belong to a denomination. I kind of correlate it to saying that I can get all the nutrition I need by sitting in my car in the parking lot of the Kroger's. It's close but it sure lacks the essential elements of what I need. This is not to say that people who go to church have no problems or that they do not sin; far from it. But people who pray and go to church, who have a growing faith, are able to find a new perspective to life and find new ways to resolve difficulties. Is there any doubt why the Bible talks so much about forgiveness and conversion? Is it any wonder why the Bible teaches us about compassion and mercy? Jesus proclaims a message of a world built on peace and justice; where we treat those with the greatest needs with the greatest of love. Simply stated, the world we live in is not the world which Jesus came to teach us as God's plan. God does not want us to live in fear and with hatred in our hearts. God does not want us to live in the midst of sin and vice. This is a world that we created by rejecting God's law. It is not God's vengeance on us, it is simply the fruit of what we have cultivated in our society. We have brought this on ourselves by rejecting God and throwing away God's law and making the Bible nothing more than any other book. What did we expect would happen as we turned aside the source of truth for the mistaken concept that we knew better? Violence has always been part of the human condition since the time when Cain killed Abel, but it does not need to be this way. Faith must be foremost in our lives. God must be at the center of our hearts and our families. Church and the teachings of the Bible must be a priority in our lives. We must pray, go to mass and stop putting everything before God. If we keep diminishing God, then what is happening will continue to happen and we will have no one else to blame but ourselves. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting another result. That kind of explains our approach to life - insane. If we want change, then we need to make that change happen in our hearts first. We have to put God above all things and without exception or what we have seen will continue to be the new normal, and isn't that sad that we are accepting this level of violence? When will enough really be enough? Pray for conversion in the hearts of all those who have rejected God and for our community to regain a balance in life by putting God first. Please pray for the repose of the souls of all who die by violence, for strength in their families and for peace in our country. God bless. Continued on Page 3

Youth Group informational night:
Tonight we will be giving out information about two very important events for our young people; Stubenville and CYO Rainbow Conference. Parents are encouraged to come and also hear the information. Both of these events are designed to help young people learn about their faith, deepen their relationship with God and to encounter other young people who are striving to live out their faith in Jesus. I would strongly urge you to attend this meeting and to consider attending one or both of these events. Would you like to ...
Those words when spoken to us by someone always causes a knee jerk reaction to say "no" even before we hear the question. With that kind of reaction as our initial response, how can we really be open to anything or anyone, including God. The only way we can grow is by having the openness to a new experience. Please remain open to the prompting of the Holy Spirit in your life. Rosary Rally
In commemoration of the anniversary of Our Lady appearing in Fatima, we will be praying a special rosary after the 9am mass on Sunday October 15th at St. Augustine. All are welcome to attend. We will pray the rosary outside of the church if the weather is acceptable and we will also have an image of Our Lady of Fatima present during the praying of the rosary. Hope to see you there. A couple of things to know as we approach Halloween. This year, I will again be passing out full size candy bars in front of the rectory for all the young trick or treat seekers. Please stop by if you are in the area and feel free to tell your neighbors and friends. This is just another way for me to get to know people, for them to feel comfortable around the church and maybe even come back to mass. You just never know what added treats God has planned for people.
Also, we will be encouraging you to drop off your extra candy after Halloween at the rectory so that we can send out candy grams to our young people who are away at college or who are in the military. If you have a child at college or serving our country and you would like them to receive a candy gram from their church, please drop off the form at the bottom of this article in the parish office or in the collection basket and we will get that out to them the following week. Beatification
What is Beatification?
Fr. Solanus received the title of Venerable from Pope John Paul II in 1995. Devotees were then suggested to pray to Fr. Solanus, asking for his intercession to God. The Capuchins have documented hundreds of exceptional favors received which might be acclaimed as miraculous. One such exceptional favor was investigated and accepted by the church as being miraculous, through the intercession of Venerable Solanus. With this declaration, he is acknowledged as one who is in heaven, in union with God, and is given the title of “Blessed.” There will be official Mass prayers and liturgical devotions allowed to him – asking for his continued intercession with God for the needs of God’s people. The next step is to attain the title of Saint. Another healing has to be investigated and approved in the same manner as above to attain Sainthood.

Q. My cousin, who has been baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church, and her fiancé who has been baptized Catholic but not raised Catholic, plan to marry in a “non-denominational”
church. Will this be a valid, sacramental marriage? If not, is this cause for excommunication?
A. Since both are baptized Catholics, your cousin and her fiancé are bound by Church law to marry in a Catholic Church. The Code of Canon Law 1117 establishes the form of the celebration of marriage which generally must be observed if at least one of the parties contracting marriage was baptized in the Catholic Church and has not defected from it by a formal act. Marrying in a non-denominational church will not satisfy this obligation and the resulting marriage will be invalid in the eyes of the Church. Although they will not incur excommunication for this, a conjugal relationship outside a valid marriage is a grave matter and neither should receive the Eucharist until the matter is rectified through making a good confession along with a convalidation of the marriage. You would do well to express your concerns and strongly encourage them to marry validly in the Church. Remind them that the things we do in our relatively short life on earth could have severe eternal consequences. Urge them to seek the council of a priest before they do anything so risky to their eternal soul. If they truly love each other, neither should want to put the other at such a horrific risk.

CHRISTIAN SERVICE NEWS
COLLECTION FOR OUR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN
Throughout the month of October, we will be collecting white socks for men and women, deodorant for men and women, packages of gum, hard candy, packages of granola bars and packages of Rice Krispy treats for our Service men and women. We will also have two weekends in October where we will have Patriotic note cards available for you to write a personal message to individuals in our Armed Forces as well as notes for our Veterans. We will make sure they get to our Armed Forces and Veterans. The Archdiocese wants each church to do a service project so we thought that this was a way to show our love and support to those who protect and have protected US. In these troubled times, it is a humble way to say THANK YOU. There will be boxes in the back of church and the Life Center for your donations. In no way is this meant to be a hardship to anyone. Please do what you can for our brave brothers and sisters. May God Bless all of you for your continued support of our Christian Service projects.

The All Saints K of C # 10501 will be hosting their 3rd Annual Italian Dinner in January, 2018 to raise funds for our future Priests. On the Menu will be Lasagna, Fettuccini Alfredo, Italian sausage, Meatballs, hot vegetable, salad, bread, beverage, dessert.
Mark this on your calendar and please join in the efforts of assisting our future priests on January 27, 2018. Dinner will
be served from 5:00 pm until 7:30 pm in the gymnasium of the Holy Family’s Life Center. The cost will be a free will offering.

A Change of Heart By: Miss DeJonckheere

Over the summer, I am able to partake in one of my favorite hobbies more often than during the school year. That hobby is reading. My nose is continually in a book of any number of genres. One book that I enjoyed reading this past summer was titled “Tattoos on the Heart” by Greg Boyle.
Greg Boyle is an American Jesuit priest who founded Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, CA. His book is about his work with gang members in Los Angeles and how he gives them a sense of purpose. He sees each member as a person who isn’t a freak covered with tattoos from head to toe, but as a person who hasn’t seen love. Greg Boyle lives his life as a true disciple of Jesus.
Recently, we had a gospel reading from Matthew entitled “The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard.” This parable reinforces Jesus’ teachings of Christian service and riches. Workers are hired early in the morning for a day’s wage, yet the workers hired near the end of the day were paid the same amount. If we don’t view this as money, but in terms of blessings, it shows that we are all equal in receiving that promised blessing.
I found that this parable matches up with Greg Boyle. In this case he is the landowner and Homeboy Industries is the vineyard (field of service). All are given a chance and viewed equally by all at Homeboy Industries. Every person is given an equal chance to be given love, to change their life around, and to ultimately help change others.
With all the wrong in the world, maybe it’s time more people viewed others with love, kindness, and respect. Let the stories in Tattoos on the Heart be what wakes us up to have a change of heart!

I hope by now that you have seen our flyers regarding the St. Augustine School Auction. Tickets are going fast and we already have over 140 sold! Come into the school office and get yours now so that you can join us for this fun and exciting event!
We are looking for donations of new items for our auction. Please bring any donations to the school office no later than October 15th and mark it “auction” along with your name and contact info. We are also looking for corporate sponsors at different denominations to cover some of our costs and/or purchase some big ticket items for auction. Thank you to our current sponsors: Air Works, Eric Groeneveld DDS, Kehrig Steel, Leisure Manor Residence for Seniors, PGS Dentistry, Wesley Orthodontics and Woodward Avenue Chili. Lastly, we are once again looking to include some vacation packages in our auction. If you, or someone you know, own a time share or a vacation house, we would love to auction off some trips. (If there is a small surcharge for cleaning or name changes, we might be able to cover that) Please contact me with any questions.
