LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, I recently have been reading and discussing a book called Rebuilt which is the story of a Catholic parish in Maryland. I’ve been thinking about what the parish Mission is, say a parish like St Jean Vianney. We have a Mission statement. It’s in this very Bulletin you are reading, and it’s printed each week. It is words to guide the parish, speaking of our deep values and motivating principles. In some ways, these words sound good. They certain identify the things we have been about. In reading this book, I’ve been struck with the question, is the Mission of the parish God’s Mission? Looking over the Scriptures it seems to me that God’s Mission is about making disciples. Is our parish Mission God’s Mission? I could say that we are doing many things for God. I’ll have to do more thinking and talking with you about whether or not what we are doing leads us to do God’s Mission. Something you and I might pray to God to clarify. Have a good week. Love,

We extend our sympathy to the following parishioners who recently lost a loved one:

To the McMahon family on the death of James’s sister Mauren Ferguson.

BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL For nearly three decades, the Bishop’s Annual Appeal has served the unique needs of a growing, changing diocesan community, reaching thousands of our neighbors through a host of worthy ministries that rely on the BAA for support. Blessed by God, parishioners want to make a difference and ask a scriptural question: “How can I repay the Lord for all the good done for me?” This past year, 132 Catholic parishioners from St. Jean Vianney - BR Parish chose to respond, contributing a total of $27,269.12 To each of you, thank you for your caring response to Bishop Muench’s invitation to take part. As emergency needs and unexpected concerns arise every year, your involvement will mean a great deal once again. In the coming weeks, Catholics throughout the Diocese will be invited to support the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Through generous parishioners like you, the BAA ensures essential programs continue—for the good of the community, to the glory of Christ and his Church. Please Give to the Lord for All His Goodness. Prayerfully support the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. If you do not receive a copy of this year’s appeal by mail, please contact the Office of Stewardship at 225-336-8790 or [email protected]. For an in depth look at the ministries or programs supported through the BAA, visit baabr.org.

St. Jean Vianney Social Responsibility News

Elizabeth Ministry Rosebud Program Two years ago our parish’s Elizabeth Ministry expanded to include the Rosebud Program, a unique way to show dignity and worth for all life. During the month of October, Respect Life Month, in Mary’s Chapel, you will find our display with instructions about how the program works. It will help us to identify, pray for and support those who are pregnant, celebrating birth and adoption, grieving miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion, infant/child death or those wanting to conceive or adopt. If you have one of these special needs, please select the appropriate color-coded silk rose and place in the vase provided. Each week, we will pray for one of the needs according to the color of a live rose, which will be in a separate vase near the display. Together Baton Rouge Leadership Teams from St. Jean Vianney, Star Hill Baptist Church Meet The Together Baton Rouge (TBR) Target Group of St. Jean Vianney hosted a gathering with the TBR leadership team of Star Hill Baptist Church to talk about their church missions, the benefits to their faith communities of being part of TBR and blessings and challenges they have faced. SJV parishioners Jay and Vicki Brooks hosted nearly 20 people from both churches at their home Sunday, August 25th, giving everyone a chance to get to know each other better and find out what the two churches have in common. Fr. Tom Ranzino led the group in opening prayer. The members then reviewed the mission statements of SJV and Star Hill, and realized a common desire to share the Gospel outside of the church, serve in the communi-ty and put their faith into action. Both groups agreed TBR has been a good way to expand their horizons beyond the physical churches and get to know people from different faiths, backgrounds and parts of the city. They shared some challenges experienced through their TBR service, such as helping people understand how the social issues TBR addresses affect them and getting new members to participate. But, all agreed that overall, TBR has been a positive and worthwhile experience that fulfills their church missions. Star Hill’s Rev. Raymond Jetson led the group in a closing prayer, and the TBR groups of both churches agreed to look for more opportunities to partner in the future.

“The CRHP men’s retreat for me was recognizing that everyone faces adversity in life and in their faith walk. We’re not alone in our struggles; the men’s retreat demonstrates this through our fellow parishioners’ sharing of their lives and the way loved ones, friends, and the Lord are there for us………….. Bob Matens”
