    October 5 - 11, 2011 SPORTS REPORTER 3M e t r o p o l i t a n B o w l i n gW r i t e r s A s s o c i a t i o n49th Annual Awards Presentation

MBWA Honors Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, Ruth Bouie, Ron Mohr,

Leanne Barrette-Hulsenberg, Kelly Kulick, Bill ONeillCarolyn Dorin-Ballard, CDB as her friends know her, has been

involved in every aspect of bowling ever since she showed a talent

for the competitive side of the sport as a kid growing up in Linden,

New Jersey. She has starred at every level, making her presence

known in juniors and then the best competition in the world, against

women when there was a regular female tour and against men when

    necessary.

A Texan from her college days on, she married PBA Hall of

Famer Del Ballard and added motherhood to a long list of involve-

ments that included competition, exhibitions, instructional clinics,

    business, broadcasting and develop-

ing programs in high school and

    college bowling.

Asked how she handles all this

    Carolyn says: Anyone who tells

you balancing bowling, a family, a

child, a job and travel is easy is

absolutely NUTS! It is not, and

    probably never will be.

Carolyn handles it well and her

    daughter, Alyssa, has more frequent

flyer miles than most of my friends

and knows what room service is,

only because she travels with Carolyn and Del everywhere. Did I

say Alyssa is only seven years old?

At 46 she is just as tireless as she was when she was 16. She owns

more than 20 major titles and shes still as a threat to win any tourna-

ment she enters. She and fellow Jersey girl Kelly Kulick of Union have

been recognized as the two outstanding bowlers of the past decade.

And yet, with so many irons in the fire, Dorin-Ballard has just

jumped into a position of far-reaching importance. Since March 1,

she has been busy as the United States Bowling Congress director of

    coaching.

The USBC facilities at Arlington, Texas, are marvels in testing

bowling equipment, bowling balls, pins, etc., to come up with data

useful in coaching. Seminars will be increased because of their pop-

ularity with the coaches from around the world.

"Carolyn has experience and success at all levels and aspects of

the sport, so she is the perfect person to facilitate the growth of

USBC coaching," said Neil Stremmel, USBC managing director.

Is she good? Carolyn has been called the best female bowler of all

time, and at the Kegel training center also has the title of being the

most accurate player in history of the testing center, hitting the exact

target over 30 times in a row at the exact same speed. CDB, also

during the Women's Series Showdown, rolled 21 consecutive strikes

giving her the title of having the most consecutive successful 10 pin

tosses in the history of televised bowling.

CDB has quite a list of lifetime achievements so there is no won-

der why the Metropolitan Bowling Writers honor her with the

    Landgraf Award.

    -Chuck Pezzano/Dan McDonough

    RUTH G. BOUIE

The bowling community and industry knows many givers and

takers. The quintessential giver is Ruth Bouie. The fact that her

resume states New Jersey State Womens Bowling Association as

    her employment speaks for itself.

There are many years of service and categories of dedication that

list Ruth Bouie over and over. They are too numerous to list, so hereare a few highlights. Ruth has been a delegate to the (former) WIBC

National Convention for 30 years, was a WIBC teller one year, was

a delegate to the NJSWBA for 28 years, and a delegate to the

    NJSWBA Workshop for 7 years.

She is a director with the state USBC, association manager for the

state USBC and Secretary for the State WBA in addition to being a

local director with the USBC of Union County. Ruth has served or

is currently serving on 9 state committees as well as 10 local com-

    mittees.

In her spare time (no pun intended), Ruth serves on the New

Jersey State Bowling Council and is a youth association state repre-

sentative. She participates in many state tournaments and is also a

    league secretary.

Fittingly, Ruth has been honored with the New Jersey State USBC

WBA and Union County WBA Halls of Fame for Meritorious

Service. She also has a 25-year state annual tournament participation

award and was honored by the state with a twenty-year service

award. Today Ruth can add the Metropolitan Bowling Writers

Association (MBWA) Special Service Award to her many well-

deserved honors, as we GIVE to the quintessential GIVER.

    -Joan Taylor

    LEANNE HULSENBERG

It is difficult to assess ifLeanne Hulsenbergs victory in the 2011

BPAA US Womens Open Tournament sponsored by the Brands of

Ebonite can be categorized as a comeback or simply a new begin-

ning.Bowling as Leanne Barrette for 17 years before the professional

womens bowling tour folded in 2003, she earned 26 titles. She was

named PWBA Player of the year twice. In 2007 Leanne was induct-

ed into the USBC Hall of Fame for Superior Performance.

But today we honor Leanne for a more recent achievement. After

a nine-year layoff from full-time professional bowling competition,

she won the Womens Open, defeating Lynda Barnes in a squeaker

match, 247-246, and then tournament leader Kelly Kulick, 218-183.

As easy as it looks in print, the venue for the final rounds was not

your everyday bowling center, or even a modest-size arena. It was

held in the gargantuan Dallas Cowboys Stadium, complete with a

couple of dance numbers by the famous cheerleaders, and a crowd

of thousands cheering the women on. Very distracting for some, but

    not for Leanne.

In addition to a check for $50,000, Leanne received two round-

trip tickets to anywhere in the continental United States from

American Airlines, a $5,000 gift certificate to Tiffany and Co., and a

    custom High 5 Gear Jersey.

But the victory meant so much more, as Leanne tearfully said,This is the first time my husband, Gary, saw me win. We met after

the tour stopped. It was also the first time her scene-stealing son,

Barrette (great name), 2, saw Mommy win as well.

With this huge victory putting Boomer back on the map, the

consensus is that hopefully there will be more such opportunities for

womens bowling. Whether its a comeback or a new beginning for

womens bowling, the perfect ambassador and spokesperson would

indeed be Leanne Barrette Hulsenberg. Congratulations to our

national woman bowler of the year!

    -Joan Taylor

    KELLY KULICK

To steal from Miss Congeniality, shes beauty and shes grace.

Shes also Miss Congeniality whether on tour or at home in Union,

NJ where Kelly Kulick has always presented herself as just Kelly.

You never would know about all the records she exploded. Or the

international victories shes had this year. Or the fact that she was

nominated along with nine other women as Sportswoman of the

Year by the Womens Sports foundation. Or that she led wire towire in the BPAA 2011 US Womens Open sponsored by the

Brands of Ebonite tournament in Arlington, TX.

While $25,000 for second place (losing to Leanne Hulsenberg in

the historic championship match, 218-183) provided some consola-

tion, Kellys grace in defeat was demonstrated in the post-tourna-

ment press conference and in her signing autographs after that.

Shes back on Team USA and distinguishing herself in singles,

doubles and team events along with another (former) New Jersey

native, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard. Recently she was cited as a wine

connoisseur, something she studied in case she ever stops bowling

full time. Like that would happen.

This is Kellys seventh outstanding bowler award from the

Metropolitan Bowling Writers Association, including last year, when

she blazed a new trail as both national and Metropolitan Area

Female Bowler of the Year for our organization.

Regardless of her numerous local, national and international

awards and achievements, for Kelly Kulick, winning never gets

old. And she has that beauty and grace as well.

    -Joan Taylor

    RON MOHR

Professional Bowlers Association Senior Player of the Year Ron

Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, may have experienced the most suc-

cessful year ever in dominating the 11-tournament 2011 PBA Senior

    Tour schedule.

That lofty conclusion comes at the end of a year in which Mohr

won a record-tying four titles in the 10 PBA Senior Tour events heentered, supported by a stunning 67-30 record in his head-to-head

matches (a 69 percent success rate) and an equally impressive quali-

fying record. In 10 tournaments, Mohr was the leading qualifier

twice, No. 2 twice and he qualified lower than seventh only one time.

His bad event might have been his most impressive. After strug-

gling to 77th place after the first eight qualifying games in the

Senior Decatur (Ill.) Open, Mohr moved up 53 places over the next

eight games to make the cut to match play by four pins, qualifying a

    season-worst 24th.

In addition to his four titles including his first major champi-

onship in the Senior U.S. Open Mohr finished out of the top four

only one time. He was second twice, third twice, fourth and had a

13-place finish in Decatur. For the record, the only tournament he

didnt enter was the USBC Senior Masters which he missed in order

    to attend a family wedding.

Tom Baker (2006), Dale Eagle (1999) and Pete Couture (1998)

also had four-title seasons, but only Bakers was in a comparable

number of events (nine). In 2006, Baker finished second, third, fifth,

seventh and 24th in his other five events. Eagle won four times in a15-tournament schedule while Couture won his four titles in a 14-

    event season.

Mohr also won the 2011 earnings crown, taking $56,100 to the

bank and his consistency led to an easy victory in the competition

points race where he compiled 217,602 points.

    -Bill Vint - PBA

    BILL ONEILL

Bill ONeill earned PBA Rookie of the Year 2005-06 was a four-

time first team All-American at Saginaw Valley State University

and tree-time member of Team USA including 2011. Three-time

Bowling Writers Association of America Collegiate Bowler of the

Year and National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association Most

Valuable Player in 2003 and 2004

Bill, called "The Real Deal" by friends, is the Gold medal winner

in all-events, trios, team and Masters bronze in 2011 PABCON

Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico. And this season won third

career title in Pepsi Viper Championship, top finishes of second in

PBA World Championship, fourth in Scorpion Championship, fifthin U.S. Open and ninth in Tournament of Champions, made match

play in 10 of 12 events, ranked fourth in average with a 220.24 and

    fifth in earnings collecting $97,290

Bill was the only player to cash in all 12 Tour events this year and

you need to know why the MBWA picked him for this honor?
