This prayer that I share with you today is an ‘oldie and a goodie’ (at least in my memory). The Angelus Prayer was prayed every day when I was in Catholic grade school in Texas. The Franciscan sisters would line us up before lunch – and we would pray not only the meal time prayer but also the Angelus. And so, in honor of all those sisters’ of happy memory, this one is for them: "Bless us, O Lord, and these, Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen." The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary: And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it done unto me according to Thy word. Hail Mary . . . And the Word was made Flesh: And dwelt among us. Hail Mary . . . Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen

Page 4 October 28, 2018

In today’s Gospel, Jesus interacts with the blind Bartimaeus. Bartimaeus sits by the roadside crying out to Jesus to have mercy upon him. Je-sus, hearing his pleas, stops and asks Bartimaeus what he wants. The man asks to be able to see. Jesus, convinced that Bartimaeus believed that he could cause a miracle, allows Bartimaeus to see. To be able to regain his sight, Bartimaeus needed to approach Jesus, to seek the Lord in the darkness of his unseeing eyes. Bartimaeus does not receive the miracle of sight, merely because he asked, but because he had faith in the compassion of Jesus. How does the reading from Mark relate to us?

While this is a dramatic story of Jesus performing a miracle, we need to investigate a deeper meaning to this story. Instead of focusing on physical blindness, let us consider spiritual blindness. Spiritual blindness is a common ailment in our world today, as we aimlessly wander through our lives trying to discover the meaning of our existence. We reach out attempting to grasp the richness of the elusive truths of eternity while seeking stability for our lives when all seems in flux. We stumble as the hazards of sin impede or waylay our search. We continue to be side-tracked by desires for riches, titles, and power. In our spiritual blindness, the earthy dimension seems more within reach, than the promises that Jesus offers.

When eventually spiritual blindness becomes intolerable, we then begin to cry out for help, begging come into the light of the saving power of Jesus. It is then we must ask for the gift of faith. Just begging for sight did not bring relief to Bartimaeus. His faith did, and so it is true with us as well. For us to see the spirit of charity and hope, we must first to have faith. Faith is the ability firmly to believe in what we cannot see, and that is to believe in God. In those times of a weakening faith, our abiding confi-dence that God speaks to us if we listen will bring a ray of light to the darkness. Moreover, as we prayerfully ask for an increase in our faith, God over time reveals more of himself to us by the brilliance of his light.

There will always be mysteries of God that we do not understand. Therefore, even though there will always be some darkness in our lives, we can begin to comprehend our future by crossing the threshold of faith. The solution to our spiritual blindness is Jesus who brings the light of salvation to us all. As St. Paul tells us in Second Corinthians, “For it is God who said, ‘Let the light shine out of the darkness,’ who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6).

We will be without sight until we allow faith to stimulates in seek-ing Jesus. It is faith in the Lord that takes us out of the darkness and sets us apart from evil, but we must arise and with desire, walk toward the light of Jesus. With faith in Jesus, we who are blind will see the brilliance of God’s grace, opening our eyes, to see the promises of salvation.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel: Mark 10:46-52

On the Way to Mass: What would you like God to heal in your life? Why do you think it would be possible? On the Way Home From Mass: Which of your five senses are you most thankful for? Why? Living the Word: Play a family board game together, preferably one that uses many of your senses. Invite family members to take turns playing the game without the use of sight, touch, voice, or whatever many be appropriate for the game. Each person only forgoes the sense on his or her turn, and other family members can provide needed help. Discuss what it would be like to live without one of your senses and what it would feel like to have it suddenly restored, as happened in the Gospel.

Thoughtful Moments: St. John XXIII

Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was born to a farming family in Italy. Ordained as a priest in 1904, he served as the bishop’s secretary before being enlisted as an army chaplain during World War I. As Pope John XXIII, Angelo never forgot his humble origins and often visited the poor, the sick and prisoners. As pope, he worked for peace and unity in a world preparing for war. He is most remembered for opening the Second Vatican Council. Share values A way to encourage children to share your values is to talk about them.

For example, let them know that attendance at Mass, diligence in school, and truthfulness are important. Ten minutes’ conversation from time to time is enough. Pray that they get the message. “Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and reject not your mother's teaching; for they are a fair garland for your head, and pendants for your neck” (Proverbs 1:8-9).

Why Do Catholics Do That? Why do Catholics have “formal” prayers?

Prayer is “the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2559). Prayer, simply put, is talking with God, or else, spending time with him. In today’s busy world, we can’t always “hear” God right away. Formal prayers, like the Our Father and the Hail Mary help us attune to God’s way to speaking. They help calm our busy minds so God can speak to our hearts.

What’s Happening at St. Agnes School………...

Red Ribbon Week was celebrated at St. Agnes School during the week of Oct. 22-25. This national campaign began in 1985 and provides a way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs. A kick-off rally took

place on Monday, with multiple St. Agnes alumni from Scottsbluff High School coming to speak about making good choices, choosing good friends and getting involved in the right kind of activities. On Wednesday, the SHS band put pep in our step when they came to our playground for a drug free rally. Students took a stand against drugs by participating

in the various themed days, decorating a drug free poster and making an oral and written pledge to remain drug free. Thanks to our alumni students for participating in our event.

The annual Scholastic Book Fair was held during the week of Oct. 22-25. Books of all genres and levels were available for purchase with

proceeds benefiting our own library. The money earned will be used to purchase the Golden Sower books for next school year as well as other new selections. Thanks to all who supported the event.

Peace Out To

Drugs!

Let’s BAND together against drugs!!!

Classroom News………...

Kindergarten Class By Terri Ramirez

October has come and gone in a flash, and the kindergartners have learned so much! I have been very pleased with all my students' progress. This month we have gone on a couple of field trips. Our first one was to the Adams Family Pumpkin Patch. The kids had so much fun choosing a pumpkin and getting lost in the corn maze!

Our next field trip was to the Fire Station where the kids learned all about fire safety.

November is also going to be a busy month of learning. We will be joining the Pre-k class and having a friendship feast. For the feast we will be making cornbread and pumpkin pie! Also, in November we will be inviting our moms and dads to Muffins with Mom and Donuts with Dad. This is where the students will show their parents some of the songs that have helped us learn, and all will enjoy a special treat. We will also be experiencing the giving aspect of the holidays by providing gifts for the elderly. Each child will be asked to do a chore or chores at home to earn $2.00 to help purchase gift(s). We will pair this up with a field trip to Wal-Mart. I want to instill in my students that the holidays are about friendship, family, and giving and not always about receiving. Overall, kindergarten is off to a fantastic start and I can’t wait to see all of the learning yet to come!

3rd Grade Class By Amanda Brill

WOW! How the month has flown by! We have had a busy past week, with Red Ribbon Week, conferences and now a Halloween celebration! I enjoyed talking and catching up with all the parents at conferences.

It’s amazing we are already in the second quarter of school! We are having a lot of fun as well as learning lots! In science, we are learning about the Design Process, and engineering! In math, we are learning all about the different ways to do multiplication. We have discussed grouping and now we are learning about the array method. In social studies, we are discussing fun ways to remember the continents and the environment. We learned a lot about recycling and what things are made out of. We are motivated and

excited for the start of the second quarter!

We are excited to grow and challenge ourselves with new goals and achievements in this upcoming quarter!
