Business conventions are important because theydemonstrate how many people a company canoperate without.

A couple of weeks ago my wife JoAnn and I attended the Montana Submarine Veterans 2 day meeting in Kalispell. 51 year ago I qualified, got my dolphins, and served on Bluegill SSK 242. It was an old WW2 fleet diesel submarine hunter/killer conversion based out of Pearl Harbor. Back in ‘43 it cost $5 million dollars to build. In comparison the newly announced building of the submarine U.S.S. Montana SSN 794 will cost 2.7 billion dollars (inflation). Back then we loaded 120,000 gallons of diesel oil and took off. We operated ‘Ol Blugill with levers, valves, hydraulics, high pressure air, two propellers, and navigated by sextant (no GPS back then).

Everyday

Nick meets up with some fellow Dolphins Today the new Montana operates “Fly by wire,” is full of computers, uses pump-jet propulsions (quieter than props), and runs on atomic power lasting the life of the boat! It uses 360 degree “Photonics” instead of swinging around on a old periscope. Compared to our old torpedoes, Montana is armed with various types of missiles along with the newest torpedoes. It has a “Seal” delivery system, a mini submarine. It’s a “Stealth, multi mission Attack sub,” goes much faster and much deeper than Bluegill. The Navy plans to build about 30 Virginia class subs at a rate of 2 per year. I plan on joining my Montana sub vets for the 2019 commissioning, if I haven’t gone to Glory!

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus hosted a ship-naming ceremony Sept. 2 to announce SSN 794, a Virginia-class attack submarine, will bear the name USS Montana. The submarine will be named to honor the history its namesake state has with the Navy. The future USS Montana will be the second commissioned naval vessel to bear the name. The first, commissioned in 1908, was a cruiser that operated largely off the east coast of the United States and the Caribbean until the beginning of World War I when it transported supplies and men. After the war, the cruiser made six

round trips from Europe, returning 8,800 American troops. Montana was the only state among the 48 in the union when America was building battleships to never have one named after it. Montana (BB 51) had her keel laid in 1918, but construction was cancelled after the Washington Naval Treaty limited the amount of warship tonnage the United States could have after World War I. Montana (BB 67) was slated to be the lead of the Montana-class of battleships, which were a third-larger than the Iowa class, with improved protection against underwater

weapons and shellfire. The five-ship class was authorized under the “Two Ocean Navy” building program for Fiscal Year 1941. However, with the need for more aircraft carriers, amphibious ships and anti-submarine vessels, the Montana-class building program was suspended in May 1942 and cancelled the following year before any of the keels were laid. Conceived as a less expensive alternative to the Seawolf-class attack submarines designed during the Cold War era, Virginia-class attack submarines provide the Navy with the capabilities required to maintain the

Sailors man the rails on August 3rd as they bring the ship to life during the commissioning ceremony for the Virginia-class attack submarine USS John Warner (SSN 785) at Naval Station Norfolk. John Warner is the 12th Virginia-class attack submarine to join the fleet. Montana and Iowa are the 23rd and 24th members of

the Virginia class, which is scheduled to total about 28, according to the Navy’s Virginia class statistics. “A ship’s naming is the first milestone in bringing it to life, and here continues the long tradition of strong connection between the people of Montana, Iowa and our Navy,” Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said.

nation’s undersea supremacy well into the 21st century. They have enhanced stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities and special warfare enhancements that will enable them to meet the Navy’s multi-mission requirements. These submarines have the capability to attack targets ashore with highly accurate Tomahawk cruise missiles and conduct covert, long-term surveillance of land areas, littoral waters or other sea-based forces. Other missions include anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare; mine delivery and minefield mapping. They are also designed for special forces delivery and support. Each Virginia-class submarine is 7,800-tons and 377 feet in length, has a beam of 34 feet, and can operate at more than 25 knots submerged. They are designed with a reactor plant that will not require refueling during the planned life of the ship, reducing lifecycle costs while increasing underway time. Virginia-class submarines will be acquired through 2043, and are expected to remain in service past 2060. Based on recent updates to the designs, some of the Virginia-class submarines are expected to still be in service in 2070. During the ceremony, Mabus also acknowledged the naming of the littoral combat ship USS Billings (LCS 15) — the first ship in naval service named after Billings, Montana — which occurred in 2013. A fast, agile surface combatant, the LCS provides the required warfighting capabilities and operational flexibility to execute a variety of missions in areas such as mine warfare, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare.
