When the faith publically confess ed by the participants is unified, what God gives us in the Sacrament is pure Gospel and a truly a blessed communion and union with one another and our God. But if there is disagreeme nt concerning God’s Word underlying a celebrati on of the Sacrament, its intended purpose is spoiled and those involved are improperly de- claring unity where unity does not fully exist. Our practice as it involves the Lord’s Supper is based on a deep reverence for God and His Word; it is based on our profound respect for the purpose of the Sacrament; and it is based on a deep desire to in every way honestly, accurately, and clearly confess all of God’s Word to the world. Therefore, those who are not yet fully unite d to us are cordially invited and encouraged to speak with Pastor or an Elder “so that we may work together for the truth” (III John 8) ; for when spiritual unity is achieved on the basis of God’s Word, ou tward unity can and will be j oyfully celebrated. Those who have declared their unity with us, either by their membership here or by their member- ship in another congregation with which we are unified, are cordially invited to express that unity at the Lord’s Table.

Service NotesThis week is our regular week for the WELS Connection. It will be shown at the beginningof the service before the Opening Hymn.

Our Opening Hymn, Nearer My God to Thee , is from The Lutheran Hymnal and is print-ed on the Goldenrod Insert found in your bulletin.

The Lord’s Supper at ZionThe Lord’s Supper is truly a most high and intimate expression of unity. Paul writesin I Corinthians 10:16-17: “Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a

participation in the Blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the Body of Christ? Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.”  Those who celebrate the Sacrament together are ex-pressing unity with both each another and Christ Jesus their Savior. When the faith

publically confessed by the participants is unified, what God gives us in the Sacramentis pure Gospel and a truly a blessed communion and union with one another and ourGod. But if there is disagreement concerning God’s Word underlying a celebration of the Sacrament, its intended purpose is spoiled and those involved are improperly de-

claring unity where unity does not fully exist.

Our practice as it involves the Lord’s Supper is based on a deep reverence for God andHis Word; it is based on our profound respect for the purpose of the Sacrament; andit is based on a deep desire to in every way honestly, accurately, and clearly confess allof God’s Word to the world. First Lesson: Genesis 32:22-30 That night Jacob got up and took his

two wives, his two maidservants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. After hehad sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. So Jacob was left alone, and aman wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, hetouched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go un-less you bless me.” The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. Then theman said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with Godand with men and have overcome.” Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied,

“Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there. So Jacob called the place Peniel, say-ing, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”

Second Lesson: II Timothy 3:14-4:5 But as for you, continue in

what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom youlearned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to makeyou wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is usefulfor teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may bethoroughly equipped for every good work. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who willjudge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you thischarge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encour-age—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put

up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a greatnumber of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears awayfrom the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hard-ship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

Gospel Lesson: Luke 18:1-8 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to

show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: “In a certain town there was ajudge who neither feared God nor cared about men. And there was a widow in that town whokept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ For some time herefused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care about men, yetbecause this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventual-ly wear me out with her coming!’” And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says.

And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly.”
