Cinephiles will rejoice with new episodes of “General Audiences” (also October 4) with trailers showcasing the careers of stars ranging from Doris Day and Frank Capra to Chadwick Boseman and Sandra Oh! Channel Pittsburgh is a streaming television station begun in late 2019 by author and arts entrepreneur James A. Richards. The station’s goal is to provide creative opportunities for media artists and a semi-professional environment for media students. Channel Pittsburgh programs much like a basic cable channel and will eventually be incorporated as a nonprofit organization. Jim has started the station with his own very limited funds and despite serious health issues. Most of the current schedule is comprised of inventively re-purposed vintage material. You can watch Channel Pittsburgh on a Roku-enable smart television set, a tablet, smartphone, personal computer or a laptop.

We’ve juggled our slate of science fiction and fantasy shows to make room for the pioneering anthology series “Science Fiction Theatre” (October 8).

The laughs continue with the early comedy of Betty White in “Everybody Loves Betty” (October 16) and newly created episodes of the custom-made series “The Classic Comedy Hour” (October 16) with comedic legends such as Bob Hope, Groucho Marx and Jackie Mason.

What could be Channel Pittsburgh’s most interesting custom-made series is “TV That Time Forgot.” This program shares television created more than half a century ago that few remember or even know about. This includes early and rare appearances by stars like James Dean, Johnny Cash and Hope Emerson. But the season begins October 9 with a something truly remarkable: a rarely seen cable TV special from the early 1960’s starring Broadway legend Carol Channing, who originated the leads in musicals like “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and “Hello, Dolly!”

There is nothing like settling in with a good book. But the next best thing is a good movie based on a good book. That’s the premise behind “Literary Masterpiece Theatre” (October 10). You’ll see films based on the works of Clarence Day, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Charlotte Bronte, Jonathan Swift, Jack London and Agatha Christie. But there is something special and exclusive coming this season: Vicente Blasco Ibanez’s famous novel The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. This 1921 silent adaptation helped make an international star of Rudolph Valentino. But our version is different: it includes new title cards, a new score and sound effects that you will only experience by watching it on Channel Pittsburgh!
