• Provide leadership for the largest college at the University of Utah, including 130 tenure line faculty and approximately 100 adjunct and auxiliary faculty.

• Develop programs to promote a high quality undergraduate and graduate experience for approximately 3600 graduate and undergraduate students.

• Provide leadership for the college’s budget. • Direct the development efforts of the college including new initiatives oriented

toward graduate and undergraduate fellowships, capital campaign for new 220,000 square foot Gardner Commons Building.

• Lead strategic planning of the college to facilitate developing transformative instructional experiences (internship program, new majors, interdisciplinary graduate training), greater research activity through interdisciplinary cluster hiring, and

expand research opportunities for faculty and students and training opportunities for students.

Chair, Department of Psychology (2008-2011)

• Provided leadership for 30 faculty, 60 graduate students and nearly 1000 undergraduate students.

• Initiated workload policy, which increased total amount of grant dollars submitted six fold and doubled number of grant dollars received.

• Directed departmental budget during the 2008 recession, moved from deficit to significant surpluses despite state funding cuts of 14% for the department.

• Developed successful mentoring program for junior faculty, now a model being used in the college.

• Developed colloquium series in the department to foster greater interdisciplinary research efforts.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE 1986-present Undergraduate Courses: Psychology of Infancy and Childhood, Issues in

Human Development, Senior Thesis Program, Adult Development and Aging Graduate Courses: Families and Health: An Interdisciplinary Research

Practicum; Health and Relationships Across the Life Span, Cognitive Development, Theories of Human Development, Adult Development and Aging, Adult Cognition and Aging, Multivariate Statistical Analysis, Teaching of Psychology Practicum.

RESEARCH INTERESTS Examine the ways that those in close relationship (parent-adolescent dyads and triads, married couples) interact as they work together to solve everyday problems and deal with daily stressors especially dealing with chronic health conditions (diabetes, prostate cancer, pain, cardiovascular disease). Examine physiological (heart rate, blood pressure) and interpersonal processes (affiliation, control) that characterize effective collaboration surrounding everyday problems and interpersonal conflicts and the normative ways that such processes may change across parent-child dyads during adolescence and across adulthood in long-term married couples. Collaboration can serve several functions for those in close relationships including cognitive compensation, enhancing relationship satisfaction, reducing physiological distress, and enhancing adherence to a medical regimen.
