CLUB NEWS

Editor’s Note

This is finally the month of our Club’s signature event, Keppel Charity Golf, and donors and staff are counting down to the two-day event on Oct 12 and 13. Dear members, there’s still time to join us in this charitable cause if you haven’t already done so – no contribution is too little; it’s the heart to do good that counts. You are most welcome to call our Golf Office or drop them an email. Don’t miss out the chance to win lucky draw prizes and even rub shoulders with invited ministers and Mediacorp celebrities!

Last month, Berlayer Terrace was transformed into an Arabian city that saw a snake charmer and a belly dancer bring entertainment to the guests at the annual Tennis Dinner. Joining the list of entertainers were the Tennis Sub-committee members, who dressed up as characters from the Aladdin franchise. Read about how the Keppel Club tennis fraternity was rewarded at this once-a-year grand affair.

On the social front, we have a number of new and exciting activities to offer members and their guests, such as the Band Showcase to be co-organised with NUSS, a one-day tour to Paradigm mall in Johor and an organic farm tour. On the F&B front, check out what special treats Tee Top has brought members again from IronSupperClub, in addition to the usual monthly promotions.

If you have any feedback on the newsletter, feel free to reach us at www.keppelclub.sg/Contact-Us-Feedback, or write to The Editor, Keppel Links, 10 Bukit Chermin Road, Singapore 109918.

Singapore National Amateur Championship

Keppel’s Callista Chen emergesoverall winner despite early deficit

Kuk Hun YiGreen Committee member

Keppel member Callista Chen clinched the Singapore National Amateur Championship (SNAC) 2019 women’s title by prevailing over Aloysa Atienza 5-4 in the final round of the 36-hole matchplay format. In the Men’s division, Keppel members Andre Chong and Justin Kuk came in runner-up and second runner-up respectively. The SNAC format consists of two initial rounds of strokeplay with the best eight women and best 16 men qualifying for the knockout matchplay rounds. This year’s SNAC was held at Warren Golf & Country Club, renowned for their fast and undulating greens. In the quarterfinal rounds of matchplay, Callista was drawn against the Singapore Golf Association’s (SGA) Junior Squad member Jaymie Ng in what proved to be Callista’s biggest test. Teeing off the back nine, Callista was trailing by two early on in the match but was able to recover on the front nine to finally prevail 2-1. In the semi-finals, Callista pitted

against fellow Development Squad member Linette Chua and assisted by a tap in eagle on the par 5 Hole 13, came through with the win at a score of 3-2. In the final round of the 36-hole matchplay, Callista got off to a good start by climbing to a three-up lead by the end of the first 18 holes. Assisted by another eagle, this time on the par 4 Hole 5, Callista was four up by the end of 27 holes and finished strong with a birdie on the 32nd hole (Hole 14), at a score of 5-4. In the Men’s semi-finals match, Andre Chong played his best match of the tournament by carding four birdies on front nine (five birdies in total to two bogeys) to end the match on Hole 14 by winning 5-4 over Justin Kuk. In the Men’s finals match, Seletar’s Lucius Toh rode a hot start to establish a three- up lead after the first nine holes, and established a five-up lead by the end of the first 18 holes. Despite a fightback by Andre to narrow the deficit and extend the match in the last few holes, the contest ended with a 4-2 victory for Lucius at the 34th hole (Hole 16).

Keppel member Justin Kuk receiving the second runner-up award.

In the Men’s third and fourth place 18-hole match, Justin Kuk prevailed over Warren’s Edgar Oh 3-2. The match was not without its own drama as Edgar, demonstrating the competitive nature of matchplay, tried to play his ball from muddy ground next to the par 5 Hole 13 but found himself knee-deep in mud, leading to him having to eventually abandon his golf shoes. After taking a hazard drop, Edgar played his next shot barefooted! Miraculously, Edgar threaded that shot 180 metre through several trees to land 15 feet from the pin, demonstrating that one should not count an opponent out in matchplay! During the prize presentation, SGA’s GM Jerome Ng shared that the SNAC actually began as part of the Pesta Sukan competition and that he looked forward to greater participation next year. A huge thank you to SGA for continuing the SNAC - the only singles matchplay competition format in the SGA calendar. We would like to thank Warren Golf & Country Club for hosting the competition this year and look forward to more matchplay competitions in the near future!

DSA(S)’s mission is to develop individuals with Down syndrome through lifelong learning; support families through specialist services, information and education; and advocate for equal opportunities, quality of life and their contributions to society. The fund from Keppel Charity Golf 2019 will allow DSA(S) to increase the capacity for some of its enrichment classes like Drums & Percussion, Speech & Drama and bowling. Our BeneficiariesREACH Community Services SocietyREACH Community Services Society (RCSS) was established in 1998 by Grace Assembly of God to help the hurting and needy in our community who are not able to receive help directly from the Church. Its residents include individuals from low-income, needy and vulnerable families, underprivileged children and youths at risk, distressed couples losing trust in marriage or in fractured family relationships, and poor, socially isolated seniors. Registered as a society separate from the Church in 1998, a charitable organization in 1999, and a full member of the National Council Social Service in 2000, RCSS has been an approved Institution of Public Character since 2009. In the past year, at least 3,500 lives were positively impacted through RCSS’s team of dedicated staff and volunteers as well as the partnership of generous givers. The funds raised by Keppel Charity Golf will be used for programme expenses including coaching and mentoring sessions for children and youth enrolled in RCSS’s youth programmes, subsidies for low-income individuals (including youth) and families suffering from mental health issues in the receiving of professional counselling and therapy, as well as volunteer recruitment and training for RCSS’s vulnerable seniors which include outreach and the organisation of meaningful activities and workshops at its two new senior centres.

Society for the Aged SickSociety for the Aged Sick (SAS) is a non-profit nursing home that provides long-term residential and respite care services for the elderly, especially the less privileged. With a team of committed healthcare professionals and caregivers, it believes in adding years of quality life to residents through holistic caregiving. Established in 1968 as a 16-bedded facility, there are now 404 beds in its current location. About 98 per cent of the residents are either wheelchair or bed-bound, while about 40 per cent do not have families or next of kin. Donations from Keppel Charity Golf 2018 were used to upgrade the daily equipment and heavy duty machines like laundry and drying machines in the Home. This year, the donation received will be used to fund the operating needs of the Home, including developing programs to improve the quality of life for the residents and improving the welfare of the staff.

St Luke’s HospitalSt Luke’s Hospital, the first hospital in Singapore dedicated to the elderly sick, has since expanded its services to enrich more lives. As an Institution of a Public Character, it sees about 2,000 inpatient admissions and 3,000 outpatients yearly. Doctors, nurses, therapists, medical social workers and other allied health professionals provide clinical, psychosocial and emotional care, ensuring that patients and caregivers do not journey alone. The assistance from this year’s Keppel Charity Golf will go towards benefitting the whole person in every ward, including the dedicated dementia ward, palliative ward, wound ward and rehabilitation gyms. With this year’s funds, the hospital can continue to offer financial assistance to patients who need help for medical care, home modifications and transport, and improve access to community healthcare needs through St Luke’s Community Clinic and homecare services.

This encompasses therapy, vocational skills training, employment support, assistive technology, early intervention, day care, educational and social support to enable more people with disabilities to be as self-reliant and independent as their potentials allow.

TRAVELLER’S TALES

By Peter TeoNewsletter Convenor

Japan is a large country. It is a fascinating country of contrasts and homogeneity – natural beauty and technology, one culture with different customs, same cuisine prepared differently in different regions, rich history and heritage. An archipelago of about 7,000 islands, the four largest being Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku, it is divided into nine regions comprising 47 prefectures, each a wonder in itself. There are mountains in the middle of Japan. On a recent holiday there, my knowledgeable tour guide told me that the mountains cover almost 80 per cent of the country and leave a very narrow strip of flat land on most coasts. About 90 per cent of Japanese live in just 10 per cent of the land near the coast. Not too many people, including Singaporeans, are aware of this because most of them are drawn to the glitz and glamour of the big cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto and Sapporo. Thus, they see Japan only as an advanced country of tall buildings, bright lights and all the trappings of a modern nation – and miss

its natural beauty: the forested mountains, rivers, lakes, streams, waterfalls, gorges, fresh mountain and spring water gushing out into hot springs known as onsen. Many of the mountains are extinct volcanoes, but some are still active. The highest of these mountains is the beautiful and much revered cone-shaped Mount Fuji, which stands at 3,776 metres or 12,389 feet high. It is located about 100km south-west of Tokyo and can be seen from the Japanese capital on a clear day. It is obvious that there are many places and things to see and do in Japan. But if you are a history buff and a culture vulture, Central Japan is just the place for you. The prefectures there are steeped in history and tradition. The buildings and the architecture, castles, museums, folk dances, cultural festivals, art, street markets and food all have an interesting story to tell. The region is rich with heritage sites. Central Japan, known locally as the Chubu region, is in the middle of Honshu, Japan’s main island. Chubu comprises the nine prefectures of Aichi, Fukui, Gifu, Ishikawa, Nagano, Niigata, Shizuoka, Toyoma and Yamanashi. In June, I went on a specially customised “Central Japan Nature and Culture” tour which covered Gifu, Nagano and Yamanashi. They were among

my “must visit” prefectures. The highlights of the trip were visits to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go, a quaint settlement of thatched-roof farmhouses in Gifu Prefecture; the humongous “Snow Wall” in the Northern Japan Alps; Kamikochi, a highland valley deep in the mountains of the Japan Alps; and the Okuhida Hot Springs Village in Gifu. And, of course, the irresistible onsen. I feel that a visit to Japan is incomplete without a dip in an onsen, which is invigorating and therapeutic. You can find onsen all over Japan. I can’t think of any other country which is so well-endowed with natural hot springs. Located in the centre of the country, Gifu is at an important crossroad of east and west Japan; thus, the prefecture has a great diversity of traditions and culture. Dubbed “The Heartland of Japan,” it is said that one could discover the “soul” of the country here.

‘Snow Wall’ that towers 20 metresThe “Snow Wall” in the Northern Japan Alps is a sight to behold. The drive there is very scenic. We went to the less touristic Norikura snow mountain, Mount Norikuradake, from the Nagano side. The pristine white mountain sits between the Gifu and Nagano prefectures.

The “Snow Wall” can reach a height of as high as 20 metres. Each spring, it is carved through a mountainous region that sees some of the heaviest snowfall in the world. Just walking through its corridor, which covers a stretch of about 500 metres, and looking up at the gigantic wall makes it an unforgettable experience. The “Snow Wall” can be seen only from April to June.

Thatched-roof houses inidyllic Shirakawa-goFascinating Shirakawa-go is a mountain settlement in what was once a wild and unexplored region. Its idyllic village, named Ogimachi, comprises about 110 farmhouses with roofs thatched in the “gassho-zukuri”, or “praying hands” style of years gone by. This is a village unchanged by time, with some of the houses dating

back more than 300 years. These houses were built without nails, the Japanese woman tour guide told me as we waited outside a restaurant for lunch in Ogimachi. Immediately I looked up at the roof of the restaurant. I saw only straw-braided rope and tree branches holding up the roof and the entire restaurant. This is Japanese ingenuity at work! All the roofs of the houses are inclined at a steep 60-degree angle. This will lessen

the pressure exerted by the heavy snowfall during winter. It will also allow snow to slide off the rooftops more easily and enable the roofs to last through the harsh winters with less damage. The illumination of Shirakawa-go in winter, I am told, is one of the most impressive events in Gifu. It takes place during seven days in January and February (the dates change every year). During this period, the entire village of Ogimachi

is blanketed with snow, which makes it glisten when the lights come on. It’s a winter wonderland, as the photographs testify. An estimated 1.75 million people visit Shirakawa-go every year. It displays different charms in each of the four seasons. Now that I have seen Shirakawa-go in summer, perhaps I should visit it in spring, autumn and … bitter cold winter, just to experience its illumination.

What an intense game! From left: Tan Hun Swee, Tennis Convenor Kamal Ehsan, Colin Chow and Patrick Lau after their Senior Masters Doubles match.

A number of the contests came down to the wire, with at least 15 of those matches going into a super tiebreak, adding elements of surprise to the tournament! Perhaps the biggest winners at this year’s tournament were Tennis

Denise captured the Ladies Singles, Ladies Doubles (with Janice Lai) and the Mixed Doubles (with Darryl Seow), while Chee Yen captured the Men’s Veterans Singles, Men’s Veterans Doubles (with Chen Chee Sing) and the Men’s Doubles titles (with Kamil Ghazali). He also finished third in the Men’s Singles and the Mixed Doubles. In other news, Keppel members Bryan Lee and Joel Owen also went toe-to-toe over the Men’s Singles title, with Bryan coming out on top! The Club would also like to congratulate winners Tennis Convenor Kamal Ehsan (Men’s Senior Masters Doubles), Tan Hun Swee (Men’s Senior Masters Singles/Men’s Senior Masters Doubles), and Margaret Lee and Foo Pin (Ladies Veterans Doubles). We hope to see more participants at the next annual tournament!

round, with a clean record of four victories, thereby qualifying for the finals. The team’s top four players put up a splendid display and convincingly defeated their opponents to clinch the Under-10A SMASH title. Meanwhile, the Keppel Aces Pro, or Under-12A team, finished second in the table and advanced to the playoff for third place. The match was a close affair, with the score tied at 2-2 after four singles matches. A game count-back was required to determine the winning team, with our players triumphing over their opponents and winning by a mere game difference. We would like to congratulate all participants, and extend our gratitude to the many parents that have supported the players who represented Keppel Club at the SMASH League.

Annual Tennis Dinner

A childhood fairytale brought to life

By Andre C. Neville

Genie magic was in the air on Friday, Sept 13, at this year’s Tennis Dinner. About 100 attendees were treated to an unforgettable evening of food, entertainment and games that revolved around the themeof Aladdin. The annual occasion saw Berlayer Terrace being transformed to somewhat of an Arabic city with the use of panoramic backdrops and a full range of props on hand, however, it was the performers who brought the legend of Aladdin to life through their acts. Amongst the list of entertainers that day were a snake charmer and his python, a belly dancer and of course, the Tennis sub-committee members! The evening got off to a resounding start with the Tennis Sub-committee members making their elaborate entrance to centre stage, all dressed as characters from the Aladdin franchise.

Bringing the characters of the Aladdin franchise to life with their outfits!

Portraying Aladdin was none other than Tennis Convenor Kamal Ehsan, who in his speech, thanked attendees for their participation and commended Keppel Club’s tennis fraternity on their continued showing of sportsmanship on the courts. As everyone chowed down on the extensive array of food at dinner,

Emcee Rico (left) and Tennis Convenor Kamal Ehsan entertaining the audience with their portrayal of the Genie and Aladdin, respectively.

emcee Rico, who portrayed the Genie, kept the show going with his entertainment chops through a short question and answer segment that was followed up by a series of games which enlivened the atmosphere. Time soon came to acknowledge the winners at this year’s 23rd Annual Age Group Tennis Championship and

Club President Lai Mun Onn (left), along withMrs Lai, were also in attendance at the dinner.
