Greetings,

Geez… for a second year in a row our most favorite water party Raft-Up fest was cancelled due to the Tampa Bay “Poosami.” That didn’t stop BCYC from partying! We still had a great time on Saturday night trans-porting ourselves to Jamaica for the evening. Sheri and Rick Ogorek and their crew did a great job of planning and serving the dinner. The jerk chicken and bourbon pulled pork and all the fix’ins were delicious. The Jamaican steel drums and guitar work from the Island Boys really made the night special. We will definitely have them back again. We’re discussing the idea of moving the Raft-up to the Memorial Day week-end when it’s more likely to have much less rain.

Some of our friends from the Tampa Sailing Squadron came over to join in on the party. Bob Marley materialized through a cloud of ganja smoke from the afterlife. Don Swartz the Commodore at TSS kept calling him Howard Stern. If you were there you can decide for yourself. I have never seen Howard Stern wear a tie died shirt and Jamaican colors shorts before so I say it was Bob. The rum and beer was enjoyed with the Island Boys keeping the dancing going all the way up to their last song.

We are progressing to get the north side project started. Doug Fuller and Lee Nell met with city officials at BCYC to discuss our idea of add-ing a professionally made shed on the property. With the city’s input it was decided to locate the 8’ x 23’ shed directly behind where the 16.5 Catalina’s are parked. The shed comes already painted almost the same color as the marina building so it will blend in well. The shed will have some windows with doors at both ends and one big one in the middle. I have asked that one end be partitioned off from the rest of the shed so that the racers have their own dedicated area in the shed.

Along with the shed we are moving forward with having the old north side shed dismantled and removed from the property. Everything on the walls of the tool work room will be removed so the solid hardy board walls can be constructed. Once all the permanent walls are built we will start painting the building. We will keep getting rid of things that we don’t need any longer to keep the club looking organized and neat. If you have something that is old used and not worth keeping yourself, no one at the club will want it either, so please dispose of it from your home and don’t bring it to our BCYC home.

Highest Regards,

Capt. Richard “Sandbar” Walters SV SeaHawk

Cruise Report September 2016Submitted by Don & Jen Rogers

The September cruise was to Little Harbor. Four boats cruised over... a 50/50 mix of power and sail. We also had some surprise land cruisers join us at the pool.

We celebrated Cathy Talisman's birthday Satur-day night at the Sunset Grille, and had a typi-cally wonderful Sunday brunch in the morning.

Sorry Tony, no flags to handout. We will try harder in the future.

The October cruise was going to be to Terra Ciea, but it was suggested it be changed to TSS. The weekend of Oct 1-2 is their Rumgatta, and our Scallywags will be playing.

Susan McQuillan is talking to TSS now to set things up. Links to the TSS website for register-ing for dinner and/or the regatta are on our web site, as is sign-up for the cruise.

Have fun!

Rhumb Runners ReportSubmitted by Barb Meyer

Great News! Read on!

The Rhumb Runners began racing Opti Prams in 1979 and became members of the Florida Women's Sailing Association the same year. Unfortunately their mem-bership waxed and waned over the years, and several attempts to revive the club proved unsuccessful.

In 2014 Commodore Cathy Talisman put out a plea for the club to once again find ways in which to sup-port women in sailing. January of that year the newly reformed Rhumb Runners met for the first time. During those early meetings the group created a mission state-ment, started Sunfish training classes and began offer-ing education programs. An important compo-nent that was added this time was that of social activities. Rhumb Runners have enjoyed kayaking, attended plays, art classes, hosted Arts and Craft fairs, and are the sponsors of the Women’s Challenge Regatta held in the spring. Since that first meeting, the Rhumb Runners have continued to grow and evolve as we seek to define ourselves.

Once again the RR'shave been invited to join the Florida Women's Sailing Association. They describe their func-tion; to encourage the sport of women's interclub yacht racing, foster fellowships between the member clubs and improve communications, advance sailing through education and clinics, promote interclub team racing and other sailing events for member clubs. There are nine member clubs from Venice to Dunedin, St. Pete/Clearwater to Tampa. These clubs host interclub racing during the sailing season, fall to spring. In the fall the organization holds the FWSA Championship Regatta for one design crewed boats. The Rainbow Regatta is held in the spring using prams, IOD's and Sunfish.

Membership opens up opportunities for networking, education and to compete with sister sailors in a variety of settings. Many lifelong friendships have been made because of involvement with FWSA.

On September 20th we will be sending Delegates to the first of three yearly meetings. Joye Swisher 1st D, Sheree Annen 2nd D and Cathy Talisman as alternate. I will be attending as the Interclub Contact. Rhumb Run-ners are to be presented as new members. In prepara-tion for this meeting the RR's wrote up our history, cre-ated a constitution and by-laws, sent in the RR logo and a membership list. The membership dues have been waived for this year and we will not be required to host meetings or interclubs until we are comfortable.

Rhumb Runners are currently meeting on the 3rd Satur-day following the 3rd Friday of the month at 11AM. These meet-ings are for creating club goals, education, planning activates and fund raisers. Our sailing day is the 4th Sunday of the month better known as Sunfish Sundays. We invite beginners and novices alike to come out and sail with us. If

there is interest, the prams can be sailed too.

While the membership of active sailors is growing, we do have a large group of women who serve in support positions and enjoy our social activities. Part of our mission is to welcome all women regardless of where theirinterests lie, both on and off the water.

One final note; the Rhumb Runne'sr are going Kayaking on the Hillsborough River October 8th. Please contact Ann New or myself for more information.

Sail fast, live slow and never be afraid to get your butt wet,

Barb Meyer Rhumb Runners Sailing/Racing Co-Chair

Rear Commodore ReportSubmitted by Cathy Talisman RC Square

Hello everyone!

The club was bustling with activity. Shep Massar, John McLeod, and Richard Walters installed the new fan, however, luck would have it, it was a defective one and another trip to Lowe’s is in order to get another one.

Lee Nell, our Master Fogger, will treat for mosquitoes around the mangrove in the marina and around the club.

Bob Trehy installed a door closer by the workshop. The porch was thoroughly swept by Margaret Eldridge. Kitchen was taken care by Susan McQuillan, Melissa Mc-Cue and Carol Southard.

Grounds/Landscaping - A mountain of mulch was spread around the club, lots of trimming and pruning. Thanks to Jillian Reed, Steve Casselman, Linda Bagby, Tom Hobgood, Chuck Greenslade, Steve Conn, Lloyd Mason; our newest members Sara Douglas and Dave Aamoot joined the group with helping spreading mulch and weeding; Larry Lynch trimmed the man-grove by the A-dock. Rod Ruple and Bill Morse took care of the debris by the D-Dock.

As always, many thanks for your efforts and care.

That evening the club was transformed into a Cuban Café. The Tres Amigos did it again (Russ Matter, John McLeod and Marty Southard). Great food and awe-some looking artwork by Russ.

Until next time,

Cathy Talisman RC SquareS/V The Rachel

Raft-Up 2016Submitted by Sheri and Rick Ogorek; Raft-Up Chairs

Thank you BCYC for all of the Awesome volunteers who helped make the dinner Saturday night happen! (Some who weren't even coming for the dinner helped…some helped all day Friday and Saturday.) Thank you to Tony & Joel for handling the actual raft-up preparation (28 boats initially signed up, but most non-members didn't bring their boats over because of the weather and media coverage of polluted waters in Boca Ciega Bay). Mixer took care of getting the adult beverages ordered ( kegs of beer), picked up, tapped and returned. Mike Oertle designed our tee-shirts and Patty Tishuk sold all 72 that I ordered. Chris Oertle is extremely creative with themes, decorating and menus…plus more…Katie Meyer makes mean rum cakes and "acceptable" palm tree tops.

Other amazing volunteers were Steve Conn, Melissa McCue, Jen Rogers, Kelli Walker, Shep Massar, Paula Hammerle, Lee Nell, Nancy Bennett, Chuck Greenslade, Gerri Angel, Paula Shur, Annette Mason, Sea Scouts Paige, Faith and Kat, Matt Maloy, Jenn Buckley, Barb

Meyer, Lisa Glaser, Ann New, and Nina Berkheiser. Our Sea Scouts were prepared to assist with the raft. If I've missed anyone, it is certainly not my intention, please let me know. I appreciate all of you!

Shirts were done by Mostons Apparel. Patty sold all 72 shirts!

Shrimp was purchased (26-30/lb.- peeled, de-veined and steamed) from one of our advertisers, Gulfcoast Seafood company. Please supports them!

Meats for dinner were catered from Saffrons Catering.

Winston (Island Boys Band) provided steel drum music and was awesome!

We brought in more in revenue than we spent by about one hundred dollars by my count. That was my objec-tive; to provide a fun dinner with entertainment within a reasonable price.

It was disappointing not doing the raft-up out in Boca Ciega Bay. Thank you Tony, Joel and Sea Scouts for all of your planning!

THANK YOU, Mon!

Proposed Bylaw ChangesBelow please read the 2016 BCYC Bylaws Committee Report, which was presented to the general membership at the August 19, 2016 general meeting, and then read aloud at the September 19, 2016 general meeting. We urge you to read these carefully as we will vote on them at the October 21, 2016 gen-eral meeting.

We would like to thank the committee for their hard work.

Cat Tales, Part OneBy Bruce Bingham

Enter Gumpucky

I never cared much for cats … dogs, yes … but not cats. I’ve always had dogs: Molly, Bridget, Tammy, Sassy, Sa-brina, Natasha, and Nikki. All of them sailed with me and loved the water. But I never had a cat until Susan (my Ex) and I went to a boating flea market in Stuart, Florida, when I had Saga in a boatyard to make a keel and rudder changes (I don’t mess around with small jobs).

We weren’t looking for anything particular. It was just something to do on a nice day when you just didn’t want to spend another hour on your back underneath your boat. We walked the rows of boat junk, and didn’t see anything we needed, much less wanted. At least I wasn’t attracted to anything, but it seemed like Susan had to stop every few inches to pick up a broken read-ing light, a bag of rusty shackles, anchors with bent shanks, barnacle-covered propellers … you know the stuff. I just wanted to move on.

I wanted a cold root beer, so Susan and I began head-ing toward the refreshment stand. Of course, Susan had to stop on the way to pick up some old, useless thing. “What do you think?” she kept repeating, cock-ing her head in an inquisitive way that infers, “I want this!” After three or four starts and stops, I finally got my root beer and suggested that I’d seen enough stuff I didn’t want and preferred to leave.

“Ohhhh, LOOOOK,” whined Susan meaning that she re-ally wanted to touch some more stuff. But we headed for the exit.

I was walking in front of her, holding her hand, do-ing three knots while she dragged behind like a sea anchor, sort of shuffling along sideways, and doing only two knots. Most women want to walk this way when they’re at flea markets. Have you ever noticed that? There must be something in the air, like mold or something.

All of a sudden, there was a strain on my arm that spun me around. You know, like how a boat spins in her own length when you set an anchor downwind. “Ahhhh, look Sweetie,” she sung using the entire scale of a full octave … the same “look, Sweetie” when women see babies. You know what I mean. “Ahhhhh,” she repeat-ed. Her voice was like 5200 drooling out of the tube when you leave the cap off. “Aren’t they just the cutest things?” That was the same thing she said the day she

made me buy the hanging flower pots for Saga’s salon … the ones that smack you on the forehead when the boat is beating to weather in a chop.

I knew I was in deep trouble. Susan was looking down into a large woven basket full of little kittens. Writhing fur balls would be more accurately descriptive. They were making high pitched “nya, nya” sounds. There was no escape when Susan got like this. “Ahhhhh … ahh-hhh,” she kept repeating. Then, the deadly, “Here, take one!” She picked up one of the fur balls and stuck it onto my chest like one of those fuzzy balls that stick to a Vel-cro paddle. The little critter thrust its needle-like talons into my flesh and tried to tear my nipples off. I let out a yelp. “Ahhhh,” Susan kept exuding, “Isn’t she cute?” She obviously couldn’t see the blood running down my belly.

There were two little kids next to the basket. “Do you want a kitten, mister? They’re free!” the little girl offered in the sweetest, most begging voice possible. Well, let me tell you … that was like pushing the big red button on the end of Susan’s nose. “Ohhhh, Sweeetiee … can we, can we … please, please, ohhh pleeeeease.”

So we left the flea market that afternoon with the fur ball’s flukes still dug into my torso, since no one could manage to get her off of me. Other self respecting mari-ners were exiting with good stuff like swinging Sterno stoves and cast iron marlin spikes. I saw a guy leaving with a genuine US Navy signal lamp. Damn!

So, this was my first cat. We took it back to the boat after stopping by a super market to buy a plastic pan, kitty litter, and cans of “smellyfish.” The cat (kitty, Susan preferred to say), would not touch land again for many years after.

We named the cat Gumpucky.

Now, for those who don’t know, “gumpucky” is the tra-ditional maritime word that describes all sorts of sticky stuff like 5200 and Form-A-Gasket No. 2. It’s not gooey. Gooey is a bit thicker and comes off your pants easier. Gumpucky is alive and knows when you’re not look-ing, ‘cause that’s when it gets on you, then multiplies. Before you know, it’s all over your clothes, hair, bottoms or your shoes (if you wear them when you working with the stuff) and, of course, all over your boat and the new settee cushions. That’s Gumpucky, not to be confused with caulking compound or Dolphinite. That’s gooey.

Now, I didn’t like this cat at all and didn’t want it on the boat. It had to do partly with its refusal to remove its

fish hooks from my skin for the first few hours aboard Saga. But, around sunset, a remarkable thing hap-pened: Gumpucky climbed into the litter box that Susan had positioned at the door leading into Saga’s work-shop, and I’d like to thank her for that. The cat squat-ted and took a smelly crap that produced penetrating fumes that never left the boat thereafter. Then, as if it had been trained, Gumpucky proceeded to cover up its do-do with litter. It made me so proud. “Look, look!” I shouted to Susan. “She’s covering up her do-do!”

(I have often wondered if the smell of cat poop perme-ates one’s clothing the way cigarette smoke permeates the shirts and sweaters of those who aren’t aware of why friends don’t visit their homes.)

And so began my love affair with Gumpucky, my first and only boat cat.

Gum Goes Swimming

During the summers, Susan and I always made a plunge over the side a part of almost every day. We had white vinyl-coated cockpit cushions (made by C cushions) that absolutely never absorbed a drop of water. They were perfect for our afternoon swims. We’d throw them over the side, then we’d crawl onto the cushions to soak up the sun, rolling back into the water like seals to stay cool.

This drove Gumpucky crazy. She’d run fore and aft along the deck, periodically stopping to poke her head over the bulwark to see if we were still there. “Meow, meow, meow, meow,” Gumpucky insisted, which trans-lates into, “I want to be in the water too, oh please, please, please.” Or maybe it translates, “How could you leave me up here all alone.” Up and down the deck, she’d run meowing, and then stop to watch us in the water.

One blistering afternoon after varnishing the cabin-top hand rails while anchored in No Name Harbor at Key Biscayne, we tossed the cushions over the side and jumped in. Gumpucky began her routine of running, looking, meowing. Back and forth, back and forth, meow, meow.

Unexpectedly, Gum ascended to the top of the teak bulwark cap and held on with all four paws drawn closely together. She had never done this before. She was facing us a bit hunched over. “Meow, meow!” We were afraid she would fall because the varnish provided no grip for her. Suddenly she uncoiled like a spring and leapt from the bulwark, stretching herself full length,

and executing a perfect belly flopper into the harbor from a height of about six feet!

She swam toward us, climbed onto Susan’s cushion, shook herself off, and found a place to stretch out to dry.

Now, I had never known a cat that would saunter through a puddle, much less jump into the water. I thought this was absolutely remarkable. Sue was sure we had acquired a budding young circus performer that would yield us a fortune.

But our amazement had not ended.

After about twenty minutes, Susan slipped back into the water to cool off, being careful not to capsize the cushion and dump Gumpucky overboard. “Meow, meow,” Gum exclaimed. That translated into, “I’m coming in too.” With that, she launched herself from the cushion and did another belly flopper with perfect form.

From that day on, Gum would launch herself water-ward every time Sue and I would take a dip. And every time Gum was left alone on the cushion, she’d follow Susan into the water without hesi-tation.

Gumpucky was proving herself to be a truly remarkable live-aboard cat.

Gum Wants to Go Home

Sue and I were taking Saga to Maine for the summer. On our way north from Florida, we stopped in Cape Charles, Virginia, at the very southern end of the Del-marva Peninsula to visit her family. After a week, we shoved off and sailed northward in the Chesapeake. On our second day, we were just passing the mouth of the

Potomac River, and Susan reminded me that it was July 3rd. “Why don’t we turn here and go up to Washington to watch the fireworks? What better place to be than the Capital for Independence Day,” she suggested?

I needed no convincing. I immediately turned the wheel to port, eased the sheets and set the reaching staysail. The trek to Washington is 100 miles of breath-taking shoreline and serpentine channels unveiling our country’s early history. It’s a fascinating trip with ample anchorages along the way. I recommend this cruise to everyone new to the Chesapeake.

By mid afternoon of the next day, we lowered Saga’s big plough to the bottom of Washington Channel di-rectly opposite the Gang Plank Marine and Restaurant Rowe on M Street. We’d been there before in Sabrina, my little Flicka, and were glad to be back. Visiting Washington is a lot like being in an American Paris. Our position in the channel was perfect for watching the fireworks.

Our first order of business was to row into the marina and make proper arrangements for docking the dinghy and getting a gate key, and then we returned to the boat. There was plenty of daylight left, so Sue and I de-cided to dinghy over to Lady Bird Park that was only 60 yards or so to our west. “Let’s take Gum with us,” Susan said with a questioning tone. Gumpucky had not been on land since her joining Saga back in Stuart over three years before.

“Sure, why not,” I replied. Admittedly, I was a bit afraid that she would try to run away. I got into the dinghy and Susan lowered Gum to me. Gum writhed with max-imum resistance. She was not a happy cat and made me know it in no uncertain terms. “Put me down, put me down,” she protested in her most persuasive catian, remembering the penetrable flesh in my chest and dig-ging in with all ten claws. I dropped her to the dinghy floor forthwith. Sue lowered herself into the boat and took her place along side of me and gripped her oar. We always rowed as a pair in perfect unison.

In minutes we had arrived at the park’s seawall. I thought it best that Sue be in land to receive Gum in case she decided to bolt. Sue took Gum in her arms and tried to sooth her. She was visibly upset, and want-ed no part of Sue’s intent to set her down. I climbed the seawall with the dinghy painter, drove a stake into the ground, and made the dinghy fast. “Meow, meow, meow,” protested Gumpucky. We didn’t know what that meant, but we were soon to find out.

Sue had wisely brought along a small coil of 1/8" double-braided Dacron cord. She tied it to Gum’s collar, and set her onto the ground. Gum’s reaction was re-markable. She began lifting her paws, first one at a time then all four, as if we had placed her in a pan of hot tar or bubblegum. Of course, raising two at a time worked for a bit, but lifting the third resulted in immediate capsize. Repeatedly, she tried to elevate all of her paws at the same time and couldn’t seem to figure out why it wouldn’t work.

Sue and I broke out laughing. Gumpucky clearly want-ed nothing to do with land. “Meow, meow, meow,” she told us. “I want to go home,” she screamed, still trying to disengage her mittens from the earth. Suddenly, Gum launched herself off the seawall and into the water, with the unheld cord trailing her closely behind.

“Oh, my God,” Sue exclaimed loudly as we both jumped down into the dinghy. Gum was swimming with all her might toward Saga. We locked our oars and took after the cat with long energetic strokes. Gum had a significant head start, but we caught up to her about a third of the way back to the boat. Susan swept Gum up with one hand, and cradled her motherly. The dinghy coasted along until Sue could put the cat down.

We pulled alongside Saga and lifted Gum to the deck where she shook violently then quickly evaporated from sight. Gum had hiding places and had chosen to be by herself for the meantime. She did not emerge ‘til the next day no worse for wear but hesitant to accept our fervent apologies for having violated her so flagrantly.

We did not get to Maine that summer. We remained at anchor until the end of October when we accepted slip space at the marina. Susan got a job at an economic-research firm and I was offered a position as a naval architect and marine-technical illustrator with a US Navy subcontractor. We wintered in the ice dockside

with ample heat, and stayed on for another year at the Gang Plank.

Gumpucky eventually became accustomed to the feel of ground under her and turned into a pain in the ass for the marina where she roamed free and learned to crawl through open portholes and cowl-vents of neigh-boring boats. She also acquired the remarkable skill of catching fish with the stroke of her paw from the edge of the dock, and always brought her smelly treasures

Cat Tales, continued from page 21 home to us so we could dote over her amazing feats.

Gumpucky lived to the ripe old age of 14, and left us with countless endless fond memories of how won-derful and loving boat cats can be. Gum became the primary cat model for my sketches that appeared in Sail and Cruising World magazines for many years. If you come across an old copy of either, take a look. You’ll find her there.

Cat Tales, Part Two will appear in the November 2016 Windword.
