A Five Wishes document is the first living will that talks about your personal, emotional and spiritual needs as well as your medical wishes. It lets you choose the person you want to make health care decisions for you if you are not able to
make them for yourself. Five Wishes lets you say exactly how you wish to be treated if you get seriously ill. It was written
with the help of The American Bar Association’s Commission of Law and Aging, and the nation’s leading experts in
end-of-life care. It’s also easy to use.

QUESTIONS They said:
“It’s just a little fish;how can it matter?”
But big fish eat the little fish.Do the big fish matter?
And birds eat the little fish.Do the birds matter?
Will they soon say:“It’s just a little plant;how can it matter?”
Or “It’s just a little bee;how can it matter?”
But the plants need the bees, and the animals need the plants.
Do the animals matter?
And humans eat the animals, the plants, the birds, and the fish.
Do humans matter?
Perhaps not.

THE BIRTHDAY CAKE
It was a cold, dreary, bleak March day in the grim era known as the Depression. A frail little girl, trying to get comfortable on a straight back wooden chair, sat near the kitchen stove. She was wrapped in an old robe, and Mother had tucked a blanket around her for extra warmth.
The girl chatted on and on, Mother barely listening. Everyone in the family knew how much Tootie liked to talk. It always got her in trouble at school, and drove her big sister to distraction. “Mother, tell Tootie to shut up!”, she would exclaim.
“You should be in bed, Tootie. Dr. Goldfarb is coming to examine you”, Mother mildly scolded.
“But Mother, you know he is always late and if you start right now you will have plenty of time to bake the cake, and you promised I could sit up and watch”, begged Tootie.
Mother was clearly worried as she looked at her child’s feverish cheeks and glazed eyes. Although Tootie was often sick in the winter, this time the illness was more severe, and had lasted longer than usual. In these circumstances, Mother was in no mood to bake her own birthday cake. On the other hand, if Tootie became too agitated, it might bring on a long coughing spell. So to avoid this and because she knew how important birthdays were to an eight-year-old, even when it wasn’t your own, she agreed to bake the cake.
Tootie watched eagerly as Mother assembled the ingredients, but her favorite part was the beating of the batter. She like the “plop, plop” sound of the wooden spoon as it hit the sides of the big brown bowl. Looking at Mother’s strong hands and wrists, Tootie tried to count the strokes, but she lost track. Were there fifty? Or even one hundred?
The girl’s eyes strayed from her Mother’s hands to her face, and saw deep worry lines on her brow. In an effort to cheer her, Tootie said, “Don’t worry, Mommie. I’m going to be just fine”, resorting to a name she rarely used anymore. And then she saw it, a tear forming in the corner of Mother’s eye. Tootie watched in silent fascination as the tear bubbled over the eye, across the cheek, down the chin, and fell right into the cake batter. Tootie never said a word, and neither did Mother. In fact, Tootie thought Mother seemed unaware of what happened. Her heart was so full of love for her Mother at that moment, she thought it would burst.
That evening Tootie was allowed out of bed for the birthday celebration. After everyone sang “Happy Birthday”, Mother cut the cake and passed around the slices. Everyone thought it was the best cake Mother had baked in a long time. Tootie never told about the special secret ingredient, and she never forgot that day or the cake with the teardrop, but mostly it was Mother’s unselfish love which always remained a part of her.

Once upon a time there were four people named EVERY-BODY, SOMEBODY, NOBODY, and
ANYBODY. When there was an important job to be done, EVERYBODY was sure that SOMEBODY
would do it. ANYBODY could have done it, but NOBODY did it.
When NOBODY did it, EVERYBODY thought that SOMEBODY would do it. NOBODY
realized that NOBODY would do it. So it ended up that: EVERYBODY blamed SOMEBODY, when
NOBODY did what ANYBODY could have done in the first place!

Even if you are caring for a senior love one, you may be surprised that 1 in 6 people in Lompoc are regularly helping a senior spouse, parent or friend (many for more than 60 hours a week), yet many do not see themselves as caregivers. The Caring Together Lompoc campaign aims to increase awareness, provide tools for caregivers to better understand the impact of caregiving on their lives, and point them to supportive resources already available in the community.
Could you be a caregiver? Consider these questions:
Am I a Caregiver? You are, if you…
__ Assist a senior with household tasks, or drive them to errands or appointments.
__ Help a senior with personal care like bathing, meals, dressing or grooming.
__ Have less time for yourself because you are caring for a senior.
You are not alone!
88% of family caregivers in Lompoc provide assistance with cooking, shopping, laundry or chores for a senior parent or spouse
84% of family caregivers in Lompoc provide transportation for a senior parent or spouse 59% of family caregivers in Lompoc manage finances for a senior parent or spouse
Visit www.CaringTogetherLompoc.org to take a caregiver stress quiz, create your own “Care Map”, find free local support services, or sign up for helpful weekly tips by email.
