This event will be on Sunday, October 18, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the home of Darrell and Brenda Caldwell (please call church office for directions). The evening’s events will include face painting, pumpkin decorat- ing, hay rides and many more games. Plus there will be a special devotion time and songs around a bonfire. Of course, there will be a special time of fellowship including food. WCC will need sandwich-makers, drink-fixers and dessert gurus to help make it the most successful evening. To help, simply sign-up on the appropriate sheets in the foyers. There is also a sign-up sheet for families, and we specifically need to know how many children will attend the event. Second, WCC will have an outreach ministry for the end of October. This will be a “Trunk or Treat” on Saturday, October 31, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. This will coincide with Grant County’s trick or treat schedule. We are in need of volunteers to set up their automobiles (decorations are optional) during this time to pass out candy or allergy-free supplies to neighborhood children. Card invites to WCC will also be included. If passing out treats from your car trunk isn’t your gig, we still need folks to donate candy or allergy-free items to be passed out from our reserve stash. Don’t like to shop? We will do it for you! A sign-up sheet is posted in foyer for all who can participate. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for these special events!

From the Minister’s Desk

I love the fall: the leaves changing, the weather cooling, and the coming holidays

with Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner. This is probably my favorite

time of the year. A chance to sit back and contemplate the wonder of God’s creation and

the depth of His love.

Recently I came upon a story that reminded me once more how quickly we can

forget all that God has done for us if we are not careful. It was the story of a saintly old

man who lived on the edge of poverty by his own choice. For the money he earned he

divided equally between himself and the poor.

Well, the story goes, one day the man’s son found himself among those who had a

difficult time making ends meet. And while his father reached out to help, he gave the

boy just enough to keep his body and soul together, while still contributing to others who

found themselves in need.

One day a friend asked the father why he paid so little attention to his son’s

personal needs while giving the bulk of his attention to others. “You could help your son

so much more,” the friend said, “if you would help strangers less.”

“Ah,” the wise father relied, “but if I was to meet all my son’s needs, perhaps he

would forget the importance of relying on the Lord. And he would begin to see me as

the source of his supply rather than his heavenly Father. If that became the case, I would

really not be helping my son at all.”

God forbid that any of us should ever find ourselves totally self-sufficient and

without need. For it is in that dark corner that pride lurks, and once pride takes over we

find little reason for asking the Lord to do His work in our lives.

Take an inventory of your life today. Have you invited God into the affairs of

your life lately?

For God intervenes in the affairs of men only by invitation.

Revelation 3:20 says: Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my

voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Remember to spend some time appreciating God each day.

See you on Sunday!

Hey guys, As we approach the end of the year, the holidays will start coming to mind, as we plan, organize, and begin marking up our calendars. We will be stressed, busy, and sometimes over-whelmed. But with all of this comes some joy and cele-bration around the holiday tables. Thanksgiving feasts, Christmas dinners, desserts, candy, etc. So I thought, what better time to talk about fasting! Fasting and prayer may not necessarily be com-mands, but we should be doing it. Often. Typically the focus of prayer and fasting is on abstaining from food, but it should be more than just that. The motivation behind our fasting should be to take our eyes off the “stuff” of this world and focus our thoughts and prayers on God Himself. Fasting should always be restricted to a certain amount of time because not eating for awhile can obviously be damaging to the body. Fasting should never be a way of punishing our bodies to the limit, and it is not to be used as a "weight loss plan" either. Prayer and fasting should allow us to gain a deeper fellowship with God our Father and Provider. Author Dallas Willard said: “The role of fasting is to teach you about the sufficiency of God while you are deprived.” Depravity is not something a lot of Americans are used to. We have an overabundance of food and goods. Stores on every corner, fast food off every exit, and excess of material things everywhere you look.

If we’re not careful, our reliance starts coming from what we can buy, rather than on God. What is being provided to us, becomes more important than the Provider. The more saturated we become in our consumer culture, the less we even recognize the simple blessing of having our daily bread. So this month, I urge you to go without. Maybe it’s one meal. Maybe it’s a day’s worth. Keep the right attitude, and focus on God. Matthew 6:16-18 (NIV): “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” What is the reward? In my experience, a deeper reliance on God and a thankful heart.

Kids in Church

Should Kids Be in Church? Yes. For the whole

service? That’s up to you parents. What if they’re bored?

That’s fine. They’re still learning. What could they do for

a whole hour? Listen, color, eat Cheerios, play *The Song

Title Game, sleep, play with Dad’s watch, look at pictures

in their Bible, dig through Mom’s purse, fill in an activity

page, sing, hear Mom and Dad sing, let their minds wander,

think about Jesus.

Did you ever play *The Song Title Game as a kid in

church? Here’s how it goes. You open a hymnbook and

read a song title with the one across the page from it, to see

if it makes sense or, better yet, if it’s funny. Two examples

from my old hymnbook, Great Songs of the Church:

#30 Day is Dying in the West . . .

. . . #32 Does Jesus Care?

#322 Years I Spent in Vanity. . .

. . .#323 Yes, for Me

Or flip randomly through pages until you find titles

that make some kind of sense together, like these:

All things are Ready . . .

. . . Why do you Wait?

Behold a Stranger at the Door . . .

. . . Go Home and Tell . . .

. . . Who at the Door is Standing

O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing . . .

. . . Angry Words

I’ve Reached the Land of Corn and Wine . . .

. . . Is it for Me?

Ere You Left Your Room This Morning . . .

. . . From Greenland’s Icy Mountains . .

. . . Hungry, and Faint, and Poor

I Was Sinking Deep in Sin . . .

. . . I Am So Glad

Yield Not to Temptation. . .

... My Stubborn Will at Last Hath Yielded

. . .Nobody Knows but Jesus

Count Your Blessings . . .

. . . No Not One

In the midst of the silliness, there’s considerable

theology to be found, because kids will also read the texts

of the hymns. They’ll also get familiar with written music.

How Kids Learn in Church: I was teaching a class

at a junior high camp in Florida. One kid was especially

difficult. He sprawled on the benches, talked loud, dug in

the sand, trying to crawl away. He wasn’t bad-bad. Just

disruptive. Didn’t listen or obey. On the final day I asked

a few test questions to see what the children had learned.

Who do you think knew all the answers? Yep. The “bad”

kid! What about the “good” quiet children? Hardly a peep.

Lesson learned: You never know who’s listening, who’s

learning.

What Kids Learn in Church: To sit down and shut

up, to stand when directed, to close their eyes during

prayer; Bible verses, big words, deep concepts; hundreds of

songs; the purpose of communion and offering; stories and

jokes about the hard parts of being a Christian. And they

learn how to worship from you.

Kids get plenty of sophisticated indoctrination from

the world: on TV, at school, on the street. They absorb their

surroundings. So teach kids in church. And have “church”

at home. Sing, read, pray. Scatter seed widely and wildly.

They’re watching you, they’re

listening and learning, even if it

seems otherwise.
