GRADUATION PROGRAMME OCTOBER 2014 3
Welcome
There is an added significance to this year’s graduation
ceremonies, with the University of Waikato marking
its 50th anniversary in 2014.
At our first graduation ceremony in 1967 there were
just 19 graduates. Now we congratulate more than
3,000 students each year.
While the numbers have changed, this is still an
unfailingly inspiring day. I am privileged to again be
included on what is a significant stage in your lives.
Today you join the growing list of graduates of this
University knowing that you possess a world-class
degree and the skills necessary to succeed in any
situation, anywhere in the world.
We congratulate you in the knowledge that 2014 will
forever remain a special year for both you and the
University of Waikato.
Rt Hon Jim Bolger ONZ
Chancellor
University of Waikato
Today marks an important milestone in the lives of
our graduands and their families and friends. It is the
culmination of all the hard work and long hours our
graduands have put into their studies.
Today also marks the beginning of the next stage of
their lives where our students get to put into practice
everything they have learned. It is undoubtedly an
exciting time. And while our graduates can be found
far and wide across the world, they always remain
part of the University of Waikato family. That family
reaches its own significant achievement this year,
celebrating its 50th anniversary.
So we celebrate both individually and collectively today
and just like any parents, the University of Waikato is
proud of the achievements of our graduates.
Professor Roy Crawford
Vice-Chancellor
University of Waikato

GRADUATION PROGRAMME OCTOBER 2014 7
Fanfare
Pou Whenua
The Processional Fanfare for brass quintet and percussion was written
by Associate Professor Martin Lodge from the University of Waikato’s
Conservatorium of Music.
The ceremonial carved Maori mace being used in the Marae ceremony represents
the strong links between the University and Maori.
It was written to mark the University of Waikato’s
50th anniversary being celebrated throughout
2014. The work is original except for a snippet of
the popular graduation song Gaudeamus Igitur
(see page 55), inserted by Associate Professor
Lodge to acknowledge the great academic tradition
of universities in the western world.
The Processional Fanfare is played as the University
graduands and staff ceremonially enter the hall and
take the stage for graduation and it is anticipated
that the new fanfare will be played at University
of Waikato graduation ceremonies from now on.
In 1965, just a year after the University of Waikato
was established, Kīngitanga head Koroki invited
founding University of Waikato Chancellor and
Hamilton Mayor Denis Rogers, along with 20
University of Waikato graduates, to Tūrangawaewae
Marae in Ngaruawahia.
There he presented the fledgling institution with the
carved taonga to be used as ceremonial mace. The
piece was carved by master carver Piri Poutapu, who
established a carving school at Tūrangawaewae in
1932, and when not being used, it sits in pride of
place at the head of the University Council chamber.

THE UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO52
A Brief History of the University
The University of Waikato had its genesis in 1956
when a small group of visionary individuals began
working towards founding a university for the
people of the South Auckland region.
A college, a sub-branch of Auckland University,
was established in 1959 and in 1965, after opening
its doors in 1964, the University of Waikato was
officially opened by the then Governor-General,
Sir Bernard Fergusson (later Lord Ballantrae).
From modest beginnings, on what was largely
farmland and with a handful of temporary buildings
and few staff, the University of Waikato now has
a student population of more than 12,000, with
nearly 4,000 graduating each year.
In 2014, as the University celebrates its 50th
anniversary, there are more than 1,500 academic
and professional staff and in the next two years its
contribution to the economy is expected to reach
the $1 billion mark.
The University is recognised for its strong research
and teaching and has forged productive international
links with more than 110 universities.
THE CAMPUS
Our Hamilton campus, with grounds covering 65
hectares, continues to be a source of community
pride. The grounds include sports fields, walkways,
three lakes, extensive gardens and more than
6,000 trees.
At the end of 2011, we opened the new
$30million Student Centre which houses the
library, computers, meeting and relaxation
spaces. It has a 5 Green Star rating from the
New Zealand Green Building Council, recognising
the environmental and sustainable features of the
building’s design. The conception and completion
of the Student Centre is a further demonstration
of our commitment to the delivery of a world-
class education while providing our students with
a dynamic student experience.
This will be enhanced with the building in 2014 and
2015 of a Law and Management building.
The University of Waikato has a campus at Tauranga
and a strong relationship with the Bay of Plenty
Polytechnic, Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi
and Waiariki Polytechnic.
The University of Waikato Vision
is to offer:
» Excellence – to provide world-
class teaching and research.
» Distinctiveness –
to have a unique place
in tertiary education.
» International connectedness –
to be benchmarked against
the best.
To achieve this we invest in the best people
in every role, the best facilities and the best
systems and structures which allow us to
operate a financial model that is sustainable.

Our Commitment
The University of Waikato is committed to creating
and building knowledge for the future. We deliver a
world-class education and research portfolio within
a dynamic and distinctive university environment
with strong international connections.
The University of Waikato/Te Whare Wānanga o
Waikato plays an essential leadership role in the
prosperity of our region and our country.
We are a New Zealand institution that looks at
the world from a New Zealand perspective. We
sit at the heart of a community of strong regional
partnerships and take pride in the extent to which
we reflect and serve the strengths and interests of
our region.
We are also an international university. We
consciously measure our performance against
internationally established criteria, and our teachers,
researchers and students inspire, and are inspired
by, an international community of scholars.
We are committed to the recruitment and retention
of world-class staff who excel at teaching, research
and management in areas that are of particular
strategic value to New Zealand. We pursue a
research and research-management strategy that
supports our country's nation-building policies
and promises a generous return in terms of our
nation's identity and the wealth and wellbeing of
New Zealanders.
We adhere to the concept of a university education
that is, by definition, research-led. Through
sustained research intensity and the attraction of
high levels of external research funding from public
sector and industry sources, we aim to maintain a
highly competitive research profile.
We are committed to meaningful partnerships
under the Treaty of Waitangi and to providing
leadership in research, scholarship and education
relevant to the needs and aspirations of iwi and
Māori communities.
We have developed, or are in the process of
developing, world-class research platforms that
take us through the research pipeline from discovery
to application and commercialisation. Sustainability
in all its forms – environmental, economic, social
and cultural – is a strong emerging theme in many
of these research platforms.
By its nature, sustainability is future-focused and
rooted in new ways of thinking and new ways of
tackling old problems. The University of Waikato
is proud to lay claim to leading the way to a
sustainable future.
THE Top 50 universities under 50 years oldThe University of Waikato is ranked in the top 50 universities under 50 years old by the influential UK-based Times Higher Education.
Updated rankings were released in May 2014, placing the University of Waikato at 44th in the world – two positions better than when the rankings were last released in 2013 and 14 places higher than the 2012 ranking. The list is an offshoot of the Times Higher Education's (THE) World University Rankings and used the same indicators for judging including research, citations and teaching.
Five subject areas ranked in top 150 worldwideFive subject areas taught at the University of Waikato have been assessed as being among the top 150 worldwide, with one – Education – ranked 46th in the world.
The other four, all ranked from 101-150, are Modern Languages, Economics and Econometrics, Law and Computer Science and Info Systems.
The QS Subject Rankings, released in February 2014, assessed nearly 800 universities around the world on the quality of 30 different subject areas.
The QS rankings are generally considered among the most influential of university ranking systems and are based on academic and employer surveys, research citations for each subject area, the ratio of students to staff and the number of international students and staff at the university.

Ceremonial Traditions
Elements of university graduation ceremonies have evolved from the 12th century
when the first universities emerged in Europe.
The organisation of medieval universities was
modelled on the established institutions of the
day – the church, the monastery and the guild.
Latin was the language used by medieval scholars,
and it is from Latin that the words ‘university’ and
‘degree’ are derived. The Latin term universitas
means a guild or union, and universities started as
a scholastic guild – a self-constituted community
of teachers and scholars.
The word graduate comes from the Latin word
gradus, which means step. Admission to study a
bachelors degree was the first step taken towards
completing a university education. The second step
was to become a ‘master’. Masters were Master
of Arts graduates whose degrees licensed them to
teach. The Chancellor, an officer of the cathedral,
originally granted teaching licences.
CEREMONIAL ROBES AND
ACADEMIC DRESS
In the Middle Ages the corporate existence of
universities was recognised and sanctioned by
civil or ecclesiastical authority. The regalia worn
by graduates and university staff today reflect
this mix of medieval governance. Robes worn by
the Chancellor resemble those worn by the Lord
Chancellor of England. Graduates and academic
staff wear gowns similar to the dress of medieval
clergy. Hoods are also fashioned on an everyday
medieval garment, although the coloured lining was
a later addition to indicate the wearer’s university
and degree.
