A Message from 1st Vice-District Governor John Parker:

It has indeed been my pleasure to follow DG Kent on several of his official visits in Regions 1 and 2 this month. The District Governor has a very informative and educational speech about Lionism in the district and internationally. I have heard Lions share their successes as well as concerns. One issue often heard is the lack of communication among the clubs. I urge club presidents and secretaries to please keep the members informed of upcoming events locally, district-wide, and internationally. An excellent place to locate up-to-date information is in the monthly district newsletter as well as the weekly DG updates sent by the cabinet secretary. Club leaders, please make these two items available to each club member in a timely manner. Communication is always the key to understanding. October is going to be another busy month. I hope to see many of you at DG Kent and First Lady Liz’s social on October 5 in Gettysburg, PA. This lion year is off to a great start with DG Kent’s leadership and vision. Other important dates:

October 10, Lions World Sight Day, where the focus is preventing blindness and improving sight. Also, hand-in-hand is diabetes awareness, which is one of the leading causes of blindness.

Sunday, October 13 is the annual Step Out for Diabetes and Kiss-A-Pig contest in Baker Park, Frederick, MD. Please contact Diabetes Chair Donna Jackman for more details. One hundred percent of the funds raised goes for research to find a cure.

October 15 is a day to increase awareness of White Cane Safety Day. The white cane, with a red band at the bottom, gives blind and visually impaired people their independence and hope in reaching their dreams.

October 26, “Make A Difference Day.” DG Kent has asked the two vice district governors to visit area projects on this date.

So, you can see, Lions are busy people. We never are bored, maybe tired, but the rewards of being a lion are endless. Until next month…. FVDG John Parker

Congratulations to the following recipient of rewards/recognition: Congratulations to Lion Linda Brady of the Taylorsville-Winfield Lions Club. Lion Linda was one of only 3 Region Chairs in the entire USA and Canada to receive the Dream Award for the first quarter. That is quite an accomplishment. DG Kent

The following criteria for this award was taken from the LCI website:

Quarter One: July 1, 2013 to September 30th, 2013 application deadline is October 31, 2013

1. Develop a Plan 2. Make sure the zone chairpersons host successful District Governor Advisory Committee Meetings (zone meeting) with at least 50% of the zone meetings in the region having representatives from 75% of the clubs in the zone and attended by the GMT and/or GLT coordinator. Encourage the zone chairperson to invite the district GMT or GLT Coordinators and make sure the zone chairperson completes the District Governor’s Advisory Committee Report to report activities. 3. Promote the Club Excellence Process (CEP) and Club Excellence Awards to all clubs and ensure that the Zone Chairpersons in the region are also promoting these programs. 4. Two clubs start the CEP by completing the How Are Your Ratings or The Community Needs Assessment. It is not too late for other Regions Chairs to submit their applications for the award.

A Message from 2nd Vice-District Governor Bob Mitchell

I hope everyone is doing well and having fun serving their respective communities. This past month has been really busy, but extremely fun and exciting. I had the opportunity to attend numerous meetings and events. A lot of hard work and effort were put into each of these functions and they were all very productive and very enjoyable.

Throughout the past month, I attended the Region 2 Zone 3 Zone meeting that was held at the Sharpsburg Lions Club. All clubs are keeping very busy and working numerous projects for the benefit of their communities. The evening was very informative and I enjoyed the fellowship with all the attendees.

The Motorcycle Rally in Smithsburg was a very successful event and a big thank-you goes out to PDG Bob Disinger, Lion Ted Nettles and Lion Donna Jackman for the planning and execution of this fundraising effort. The weather was perfect the day of the event and the food and music were also fantastic. A lot of credit also goes to the numerous clubs in the District that participated and came out, as usual to support this very important cause. The event will help support our work in the area of diabetes awareness. Once again, great job by everyone involved.

The Taneytown Lions Club held their first ever Family Fun Days at Memorial Park in Taneytown. This was a four day event which included carnival rides, hot air balloon rides, fireworks, 5k race, car show and food vendors and numerous games for the enjoyment of everyone. This project took approximately two years of planning and much involvement from numerous committees. The event was received very well by the public and the Taneytown Lions hope to make this an annual event.

I attended the Lions Youth Foundation meeting in Annapolis and the Foundation engaged in discussion in many areas where it can assist the clubs in the Multiple District. Once again, I would like to remind all clubs that the Youth Foundation has grant funds available for any project involving youth development. Please feel free to contact me in reference to any project that may meet the criteria for funding.

I had the opportunity to attend the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum in Overland Park, Kansas. The forum was a very informative and motivating experience. The seminars were very interesting and the instruction was superb. The numerous speakers were very interesting and inspirational. I also found the networking with the other Lions from all the other numerous locations represented to be very beneficial. As I'm sure has been stated many times, any Lion who has the chance to attend this training should take advantage of the experience.

As always I look forward to visiting with many of you during the next few months. The communities you serve are very lucky to have such fine, caring people such as all of you and remember, when you serve, We Serve.

"Feeding the Hungry" Projects Around the District: DG Kent would like each club to provide 12 cans of food or non- perishable food item per member by the end of the Lions Year in June 2014 to be given to a food bank or to a needy family. What are clubs doing to help Feed the Hungry? Chewsville Lions Club is planning to donate their "Feed the Hungry" collection to the Micah's Backpack Group at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Chewsville, MD. This, also, was one of their recipients last year for Make a Difference Day and they voted to combine these two events this year into one GREAT event.

Frostburg Lions participated in the Summer Lunch Box Program at several local community churches.

Hancock Lioness collects canned goods for Loaves and Fishes in Hancock which serves 118 local people.

Taneytown Lions are collecting food items for the Caring and Sharing Food Bank at St. Joe's Church.

Taylorsville-Winfield Lions are collecting canned goods for the Ebenezer Church Food Pantry in Winfield which serves 55 families. Williamsport Lions are collecting canned goods for the Williamsport Food Bank. They select a food item each month. The selection for October is plain macaroni.

For KAP put the candidate you are supporting on the memo line. All money raised from these two events being held on October 13 go 100% to research to find a cure for diabetes. The Walk registration begins at 12 noon and will step out at 1 P.M. I ask all Lions, Lioness and Leos to register with me before they register at the main desk. This enables me to be sure we get credit for all the money that our organization turns in. In the past we have not received accurate credit for the number of walkers and the amount of money they turned in. If you have questions, please call me at 301-790-2036 or e-mail me at [email protected]. Please put KAP or WALK in the subject line as I look at those e-mails first. “The Acorn” Lions Camp Merrick, Inc. “Making Memories to Last a Lifetime!”

Dear Lions, Your camp has had a wonderful summer! The Adult Blind Campers had a great week playing “Beep Ball”, taking nature walks, listening to music and those who dared went boating. LCM also served a total of 297 children that were either deaf, blind, had type 1 diabetes or were from impoverished homes and our Family Diabetic Camp was FULL! When talking to some of camp families, hearing what they are going through and how the camp has impacted their life, we are so proud to be a part of Lions Camp Merrick and proud of the Lions and the Lions Clubs that donate the funds so that this camp can continue. We want to tell you about a young man that came to camp this summer with the help of a Lions Club. His school nurse was the one who finally had him diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She found no help for him at home and had heard about Lions Camp Merrick and the reputation we have in the diabetic community. She wanted him to attend so that he would have the positive environment along with the encouragement and educational sessions that we provide for our diabetic campers. She received the funding through our Lion Donna Jackman and Lions District 22-W for him to attend camp. She took up a collection from his teachers to help purchase items he would need at camp. The young man was 16 years old, had constant headaches and his “numbers” had always been high. He arrived on Sunday and by Wednesday his numbers were finally where they should be and his headache was gone. We wanted him to attend another session and would have provided funding but his mother did not want him to miss another week of work…..our hearts were broken for this young man, but we know he left here with a feeling of encouragement and a better knowledge of how to control his disease. Because of YOU this young man has a more positive and hopeful future of living his life without losing his eye sight or becoming an amputee. We wanted you to know that through Lions Camp Merrick you ARE making a difference in children’s lives and want to encourage you to continue providing funds for children to attend camp. We also want you to know that your “general donation” funds are still very much needed to help maintain this camp and insure that this important work can continue with the high standards that represent the Lions Clubs, whose name we proudly bare. You can’t see us, but we are standing and applauding for ALL of you and sending …

The Boonsboro Lions Club were out in force on Aug 6th at Shafer Park on National Night Out. “Boy were things floating along just great – well everything, but the rubber duckies that is .. They didn’t float! No worries as the kids had a blast just picking up the rubber duckies and winning prizes from the Boonsboro Lions.”

Pick a duck wins a prize!

Plans are underway for Thurmont Lions Club’s 2013 Volunteer of the Year. Club members nominate someone who is making a difference in the lives of others– working with children in the schools; helping at the food bank; a member of a service organization or church; or a special neighbor who is always there to help whenever needed. Candidates must do their volunteer service in zip code 21788 and may not be a member of the Thurmont Lions Club. Nominations are due October 1st 2013.

The Middletown Lions sold ice cream, brooms, and raffle tickets at the Annual Middletown VFC Car Show On August 17th. Lion Ron Forester and a Model T Ford are featured in the picture.

LaVale Lions had an unfortunate incident! There were only 600 dinners left to cook. They were cooking when a fan motor in the exhaust stack caught on fire, ruined the dinners and brought the BBQ to an abrupt end. They all said “Thank you” and have tremendous praise for the LaVale Vol. Fire Dept., LaVale rescue Squad and other emergency agencies. Fortunately there were no injuries.

Taneytown Lions at the Taneytown Fun Days:

For those of you who were were unable to witness the balloon ascension on Saturday at our Family Fun Days - here is a beautiful picture of the balloons right before taking off. The club thanks Linda Van Scoyk for catching this awesome view!

Schools Need Lions:

When the Lions magazine published the July/August 2012 issue, then International President Wayne Madden wrote about education being the key to unlocking human potential. "The acquisition of skills and knowledge enables people to overcome poverty, disease and other social ills." He views the ability to read as the foundation to an education and suggests it is a gift Lions can give to children and adults around the world. The Bill Gates Foundation also states children develop the skills they need to succeed in school and life during their first five years. Unfortunately, when children start behind, they often stay behind, leading to an achievement gap in elementary school and beyond. To act upon this disturbing information, five Lions from the New Market District Lions Club joined the reading action team at New Market Elementary School. Two mornings a week, each Lion worked with the children, individually, on memorizing sight words and improving their reading and comprehension skills. The school's reading specialist provided a folder for each student with a study plan and learning aids. The students assisted were from kindergarten, first grade and fourth grade. Each Lion worked with two to four children each morning seeing the same children each day. By the end of the twelve week period, from November 12 through February 1, each child had measureable improvement in their skills. Since the start of the 2013 school year, the New Market Lions are starting the program once again. This is a great service Lions can do in their own communities. Clubs can contact the reading specialist at the elementary school nearest their club. The schools will welcome the volunteers and the volunteers will gain an immense sense of satisfaction with results that help children gain an important foothold with their education.

The Smithsburg Lions will be having a ham/cheese, roast beef and turkey sandwich sale on October 17. The cost is $3.50 each.

Invitation from the Thurmont Lions Club Several years ago, The Lion magazine included a feature story about the Thurmont Lions and their signature project – refurbishing a one-mile stretch of the original H&F Trolley line that ran to/from Thurmont, Frederick and Hagerstown. This year, as a complement to that project and as their 2013 “Make a Difference Day” project, the Thurmont Lions and the Thurmont community are revitalizing the original trolley transit station and repainting one of the original trolleys that is positioned next door to the transit station. Local artist, Yemi, has been contracted to create a mural (and memories of days gone by) for a portion of the original transit station – the official celebration and unveiling will take place at the entrance to the carnival grounds along Main Street in Thurmont on Saturday, October 26. Activities begin at 1:00 p.m. and all are invited to attend. Lion Shirley Long

2nd Annual Motorcycle Rally:

45 motorcycle enthusiasts, including 4 County Lions Ann and Co-Chair Ted Nettles, Liberty Town Unionville Lion & RC Sue Ensor, Deer Park Lion PDG Dick Liebno and his wife Lion Grace, and 4 County Lion Brian Fandel gathered at the Veterans Park in Smithsburg on September 7th to ride the 60 miles from Washington County to Carroll County and back again. Longmeadow Lion Carol Alphin rode on the back of Carroll County Commissioner Richard Rothschild’s motorcycle. DG Kent and Administrative Assistant Liz Eitemiller also attended the event with SVDG Bob Mitchell. The Chewsville Lions sold breakfast sandwiches. Taneytown Lion Linda Sherfey manned the silent auction table and Lion Donna sold diabetes bears. Event Co-Chair PDG Bob Disinger said that the $1600 that was raised will provide two camperships to summer camp at Lions Camp Merrick in 2014. During that time, the campers learn proper testing procedures, how to self-inject insulin or use their insulin pump and how to make food substitutions to control their diabetes. He thanks the Lions from the following clubs who attended and/or participated in the event: 4 County, Chewsville Lions, Smithburg Lions, Taylorsville-Winfield Lions, Libertytown-Unionville, Taneytown, Deer Park, West Hagerstown, and Longmeadow.

WELCOME TO MY SHELTER

I went to a sheltering exercise with the Red Cross where I served as what they called a “client”, a fancy name for a shelteree. The scenario was the shelter was being set up for Hurricane Sigmund, a Category 4 hurricane targeting the Mid-Atlantic States. The key emphasis of this exercise was Mental Health training. A group of Mental Health professionals, many straight out of college, would go through the local neighborhoods and another group would man the shelter and be forced to deal with whatever strangeness that occurred. The ten clients at the shelter were given a series of “injects” (role plays) that would really test the skills of the professionals. We had some great actors.

My injects included a husband who could not find his wife at the shelter, a germiphobe who did not want to live near the “dirty people”, and me wanting to take my invisible friend, “Jim” into the shelter with me. They also taxed my very limited Spanish skills when I was told to “speak no English.” In the debriefing that followed, we learned that many of these injects were based on actual cases that occurred at shelters in the past.

A shelter for twenty-five can be opened within three to four hours of first notification because the Red Cross keeps stocked trailers available to roll to the damaged area. In addition to cots and blankets, everyone attending gets a personal care kit with soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. They may even be able to provide medicine for critical needs. The Red Cross provides water and snacks on a 24hour basis and regular meals throughout the day. Sometimes you eat only MREs and other times you could get donations from Chick- filet or Olive Garden. You may not always have electricity in a shelter. But, don’t expect any kind of luxury or your own private room. As I learned yesterday, “they are called disasters for a reason.” If you find yourself a client in a shelter, lower your expectations. “The shelter is about safety and sustaining life, not your physical comfort.”

I’m writing this so that you all have some awareness of what a shelter may be like. Having a little inside information may be all you need to decide to take the advice of the authorities and evacuate to a shelter.

LCI Foundation

Do you have Lions in your club that go over and above what is expected of them? Why not recognize them with a Melvin Jones Fellowship or a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship. What a great way to show them how much your club appreciates what they do. And in addition to this recognition we are supporting our International Foundation. So for your clubs donation to LCIF you achieve two objectives: recognizing outstanding Lions for their service and contributing to help the world community through our grants and disaster relief. Now that is a two-for-one that’s hard to beat.

Lion Paul E Cannada, 22 W LCIF Chairperson

Lions of 22-W:
