the first Wednesday of each month. We would be happy to meet you and welcome you.

Dan Holbrook Chairman, Morristown Aviation Association

Message from the President of MAPA Looking for bit of good news in these gloomy times?

Try this: The Morristown Airport Pilots Association has set the date and place for its Annual Anti-

Winter Party, Saturday, January 26th, 2013 at the Hanover Manor, East Hanover, NJ. So get out your dancing shoes and expandable

waist bands, then just sit back and start counting the days for another wonderful night out with old and new friends while enjoying great music and

great food. Note: the party is open to all of our friends and associates at MMU. E-Mail Len Levy ([email protected]) to get a copy of the flyer when it is ready for distribution.

MAPA wants to welcome the tower people back to their refurbished perch atop the tower building. We are looking forward to having them settle in

and reopen the cab to visits from pilots and their families. As many of you remember, MAPA has enjoyed a good working relationship with our FAA

tower personnel and has sponsored meetings with them so pilots could discuss airport flight operational issues.

It is also time to remind everyone that the cooling nights of October are harbingers of what is coming, WINTER!! Now is the time to ready

your birds for the cold and wintry weather that plays havoc with engines and airplanes in general.

If you have been putting off any maintenance items, now is the time to talk to your friendly A&P and get those issues taken care of. Take my word for it, things only get worse as the

temperature drops. Once the snow falls, don’t try to fly without making sure all snow, ice and frost is cleared from the airplane’s wings and tail

surfaces. I know I issue the same warnings every year, but until the clean surfaces are made part of your

preflight check list, remember you read it here first. So fly quiet, fly safe and be a good neighbor.

WWII Aircraft Visit to MMU a Success! By Keenan English, DM-Operations Coordinator

In August, MMU experienced a blast from the past. From August 22th to the 24th, Signature

Flight Support at MMU had the privilege of hosting three vintage WWII aircraft thanks to the Collings Foundation. The Collings Foundation is a

non-profit historical preservation organization founded in 1979 with the purpose of organizing and supporting “live history” events focused on educating the public about American heritage.

As a part of their “Wings of Freedom Tour” the Collings Foundation agreed to showcase three of their WWII aircraft at MMU which included a fully restored B-24 Liberator, a B-17 Flying Fortress,

and their newest addition, a P-51C Mustang dual-control fighter aircraft.

Each aircraft has a history that is uniquely their own. Visitors to MMU not only got to learn about them, but they also were able to take tours inside of the aircraft. If you were lucky enough

(and your bankroll was large enough) you could have even take flight as a passenger in your choice of aircraft. Several hundred visitors came

to MMU over the span of three days to witness history in action. Among them were many aviation enthusiasts, military veterans, children, and people who just love large and rare relics of

history. On the final day, the three war birds made their final departure from MMU and continued their

tour to places that includes Worchester, NY, Wildwood, NJ, Oxford, CT, Jamestown, VA, Broomfield, CO, and others. Eventually they will

make their way back home to Stow, MA as they’ve been doing since 1989.

Fun times at the 70/30 Anniversary Party By Dustin Ramsey, DM-Operations Coordinator

On September 21, 2012, DM celebrated the 70th anniversary of Morristown Municipal Airport and the 30th anniversary of DM AIRPORTS LTD managing and operating the airport on behalf of

the Town of Morristown. To celebrate this momentous occasion, DM hosted a luncheon for its employees and tenants, both past and

present, and representatives from governing bodies of the municipalities that surround the airport.

During a short ceremony at the event, Hanover

Township Mayor, Ron Francioli presented a proclamation to Bill Barkhauer from the Township recognizing the economic benefit the airport has made to the County and Region. In addition,

Mary Dougherty, wife of Morristown Mayor, Tim Dougherty, read a proclamation from the Town noting its standing as a general aviation airport

with national importance.

In addition, Mr. Kevin Russo was kind enough to

show off his T-6 Texan up close in the hangar as well as with an aerial smoke show on his way back home.

Let it not Snow, Let it not snow By Peter Gilchrist, A.A.E., DM- Manager, Operations & Security

After last year’s warm and dry winter it’s going to

be hard to get back into it this year. Forecasters are pointing to an average winter and that means the return of snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. The Operations and Facilities

Departments are beginning to prepare for inclement weather. Here are a few things you can do to make the return of winter a little easier

on everyone!

Let us know before you go.

The Snow Team prides itself on making this

airport a safe option when conditions deteriorate. We want our tenants to have a safe airfield when it is needed. The best way we can provide that is by tenants keeping in contact and letting us know

when you are operating. With changes to the BARR program we will no longer be able to see everyone who is inbound to MMU. You can let us know by calling the Operations Department,

faxing a schedule to 973-538-5850, or by emailing [email protected].

Don’t let the cold freeze your security

programs.

We want to make sure the airport remains secure during inclement weather. So please remember

that plowing is no excuse to allow free access to the airfield. Unless monitored, gates should be closed to deter inadvertent access. Also be

cognizant of snow piles near fences. Don’t build ramps that could easily allow someone to climb over a fence.

Don’t make it harder for everyone.

To plow the entire airfield, access roads, and the West Tie Down, is equal to plowing a single lane road from MMU to Philadelphia. That’s before we

tackle the fuel farm with the shovels. While we understand that each tenant’s leasehold has its own issues, please help us by keeping your snow

on your leasehold. Don’t plow out onto the airport road system. Never plow snow onto a taxiway. If you’re in the West Tie Down, please don’t throw snow into the row once we’ve

finished plowing. This ensures that all airport assets can be focused on ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the airfield.

Fly Friendly at MMU By Rosemary Rizzo, C.M. – Noise Abatement Officer

Cooler, clear skies are just around the corner as

autumn quickly approaches. More airport neighbors are opening their windows and turning off the air conditioning. Excellent flying weather

lies ahead, so please remember while you are soaring the skies around MMU to use noise abatement procedures whenever feasible. Please avoid noise sensitive areas and try to remain as

high as possible when arriving and departing the airport. With your help, we can be a good neighbor to the surrounding communities.

If you would like copies of the airport noise abatement procedures or helicopter noise abatement video please call 973-538-3366 ext.

122. Or email [email protected]. Thank you for flying friendly at MMU!

NJ DOT Two-Lock Rule By Rosemary Rizzo, C.M., DM-West Tie-Down Administrator

The New Jersey DOT requires that general aviation aircraft, parked or stored for more than

a 24-hour period at Morristown Municipal Airport, use a combination of two locking devices to secure or disable the aircraft in order to reduce its chances of being tampered with or misused.

You are in compliance if your aircraft door is locked and the aircraft has a key operated

magneto/starter switch. Other ways to lock or

disable your aircraft can include a throttle lock, mixture lock, prop lock, or wheel lock. If your

aircraft is locked inside of a hangar, the hangar would count as one lock in a two-lock system. You would still need a second method of locking or disabling the aircraft. The fenced-in and gated

West Tie-Down area does not count as a lock. The NJ DOT conducts periodic security audits of the airport, and the two-lock rule is enforced. For

more information please visit: http://www.state.nj.us/transportation/airwater/aviation/twolock.shtm.

ARFF Chief’s Chat By Doug Reighard, MARS/ARFF- Fire Chief

As we move into fall I would like to remind everyone of a few at home safety tips to help keep everyone safe!

Summer has past and fall is here, bringing cooler weather and falling leaves.

o Never park your car or truck over a pile of

leaves. The heat from the vehicle's catalytic converter or exhaust system can ignite the leaves below. The resulting fire

could destroy your vehicle. o Check all smoke and carbon monoxide

detectors to make sure they work, and change the batteries.

o Have heating appliances serviced and chimney flues examined for defects.

o Have fireplaces and fireplace dampers checked.

o Fireplaces should be equipped with an appropriate screen or glass enclosure to prevent sparks from flying out.

o Wood burning stoves should be examined and the flue and chimney checked for creosote buildup.

OCTOBER 2012 VOLUME 5, ISSUE 4

Newsletter 5

o Use only seasoned woods, and avoid soft woods like Pine, etc.

o Never use a flammable liquid to start a fireplace.

o Never overload the hearth with wood or artificial logs, the resulting fire may be too

large for the unit. o Put all ashes outdoors and away from the

house in a metal container. o Have a useable fire extinguisher available

o IT IS ILLEGAL AND DANGEROUS TO BURN LEAVES AND BRUSH

*Update on new ARFF Vehicle*

Construction of the new Class 2 ARFF vehicle is underway and we anticipate taking delivery

around Christmas time. We are looking forward to training on the new truck and placing it in service.
