END OF 1ST SEMESTER First Semester ends on Wednes-day, October 17th and Second Semester begins on Monday, October 22nd. Students who need a 2nd semester schedule can print one via the Student Portal.

Please note: There is no school for students October 18th and 19th. These days will be used by our teachers as work days and staff development. PROGRESS CHECKS We believe in the importance of our school and parents/guardians working together to help ensure student success. We know that communication is an important part of this relationship and of student success. The block schedule moves very quickly so students cannot afford to get behind. We need your help in ensuring students stay on track.

As a parent you will receive communication about your child’s grades every 3 weeks. Final grade reports are mailed home to you. Because we want quick turnaround, however, progress checks are not mailed home, but rather carried home. Please ask your child for his/her progress check on the corre-sponding day and have a conversation about his/her progress.

Progress Reports: Monday, November 12th Tuesday, December 4th Given to students during Quality Time. Students are responsible for bringing the progress checks home. You may also look at grades via your Parent Portal Account. NUMBERS TO REMEMBER

POTTERY CLASS Art teacher Joanie Sanders and her pottery students have created memory stones for Methodist Hospital’s Comfort Care Group. The Comfort Care Group is dedicated to aide patients and families transition into this last phase of life with ease and comfort. One of their projects is

organizing tangible remembrance items to help patients and their loved ones. Over 360 small memory stones were created, painted and donated to Methodist Hospital by Millard West pottery students to be given to families as they deal with end of life/hospice care. Sarah Sullivan, Millard West junior, introduced this project to her pottery class.

HEALTH OCCUPATIONS STUDENTS OF AMERICA NEWS

HOSA is a national organization dedicated to the provision of unique opportunities and experiences for students interested in the health and medical fields. It is based primarily out of Human Physiology and Athletic Training/Sports Injury courses. HOSA students at Millard West may participate in our three blood drives, various community service events, and attend local, state and national leadership conferences/competitions.

American Red Cross/HOSA Blood Drives The ARC and the Health Occupations Students of America will be sponsoring three blood drives this year. The first will be on Friday, October 5 from 8:00 – 2:00. The Midwest Region needs to collect about 2100 units/week to meet area and national requirements. To help meet this need, the Red Cross has had great success in recruiting high school students and encouraging them to be lifelong donors. In order to donate blood you must:

Be 17 years old (16 with completed parental permission form) Be in good general health Pass the comprehensive health/history screening Weigh 110 pounds. If female there is a sliding scale according to height 5’6/110; 5’5/115;

5’4/120lbs, etc. We encourage all eligible students to donate blood. Our goal is to collect over 350 usable units/year. Please talk to your son/daughter about giving blood. If, for any reason, you would prefer your child to not give blood, please make that known to them so they do not register. If you have any questions or concerns about the blood drive, or if you would like to donate (parents make great donors!), please e-mail Jim Johnston at [email protected].

2012-2013 YEARBOOK Don’t be left without a yearbook. Yearbook order forms are in this newsletter. Cost from September 1st through December 21st is $65.

BECOME A TEAMMATES MENTOR Tom and Nancy Osborne founded the TeamMates Mentoring Program in 1991 in an effort to provide sup-port and encouragement to school-aged youth. The goal of the pro-

gram is to see youth graduate from high school and pursue a post-secondary education. To reach this goal, youth meet one-half hour per week with a car-ing adult who serves as a mentor. Mentors are vol-unteers from the community who have dedicated themselves to making a difference in the life of a young person. Mentors give youth a sense of hope, purpose and vision. If you are interested in becom-ing a mentor, please contact TeamMates at 402-390-8326 or www.teammates.org.

Fast Facts Parents Need to Know About……

Tobacco Use There is now evidence that nicotine may make the young brain more susceptible to other drugs like

alcohol or marijuana. 1 out of 3 teens who try smoking will end up addicted to nicotine as adults. If kids resist cigarettes while they’re still young, the chance that they will go on to become adult smokers is

slim to none.

“A child who reaches age 21 without smoking, abusing alcohol, or using drugs is virtually certain to never do so.” Joseph Califano, Jr. (President of the Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse)

The Medicine Abuse Project

Here's something you might not know: Drug overdoses now surpass car crashes as the leading cause of accidental death in the US. And what is driving this trend? Prescription painkiller overdoses.

This uncomfortable truth is just one of the reasons why The Partnership at Drugfree.org has chosen this moment to launch The Medicine Abuse Project. They’re aiming to prevent half a million teens from abusing medicine over the next five years, but they can’t do it without YOU!

Sign the pledge on The Medicine Abuse Project's website to add your voice:

http://my.drugfree.org/take-the-pledge “I, (parent’s name), pledge to learn about teen medicine abuse, to safeguard my medicines and to talk to teens I know about the issue.”

How Can SCIP Help Student and Families?

The School Community Intervention and Prevention (SCIP) program at Millard West is ready for your referrals. This program helps to identify and refer students who might be having problems in school as a result of mental health or drugs/alcohol issues. Parents, students, school staff or other concerned people can make a referral to SCIP. Students who are referred to SCIP can then be connected to appropriate resources in the school and community to help address any problems that are identified. If you have concerns about your own child, your child’s friend, or some other young person at Millard West, please contact the SCIP team leader, Michelle Brady, at 715-6069 or [email protected]. All referrals are kept strictly confidential.

Project Wee Care Project Wee Care is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization that helps local MILLARD families who are going through a tough time by providing them with care packages in December. These care packages include food, clothing and other basic needs the family might have. If enough donations are made to Project Wee Care, the family in need will also receive “wish list” items so that each child in the family receives a holiday gift. If you would like to sponsor a family please contact: Michelle Brady ( 402-715-6069) or Maureen Zohlen (402-715-6329) in the Millard West Guidance Office by October 30th. THANK YOU!

Students will have the option of participating in one of four activities: ASVAB testing Career/college tours pre-arranged through the Guidance Office Job shadows College visits

Career/College Pre-Arranged Tours: Friday, October 26 Career/College Day tours to area colleges and universities will be pre-arranged by the Guidance Office with a limited number of seats available The following schools are currently being contacted to develop plans for pre-arranged tours: Creighton University Midland University Doane College Southeast Community College Iowa Western Community College University of Nebraska - Kearney Nebraska Wesleyan University University of Nebraska - Omaha Northwest Missouri State University of South Dakota Metro Community College Wayne State

Job Shadows or Personal College Visits: Friday, October 26 Individual families should make their own arrangements for job shadows or personal college visits. Students involved in a job shadow should plan to spend 3 – 4 hours shadowing a person in a career area of interest. College visits are used to research schools that offer programs of student interest and may last a few hours to all day. Try to contact the admissions office at least two weeks in advance to schedule a tour.

Schools such as the University of Nebraska - Lincoln have already scheduled October 26 as an open house date. Go to the school’s website for information and register early for these campus events.

Students who need more information about possible job shadow or college site visits should contact Mrs. Reoh, Mrs. Munoz, or Mrs. Brewer in the Guidance Office.

EducationQuest’s website also has a link to this site. 2. Complete and submit a confidential form providing details such as contact information, age/gender/

ethnicity, year in school, academic information, extracurricular activities, and ACT/SAT test scores. 3. Print the barcode that appears on your screen. 4. Important! Take the barcode to the College Fair(s) you attend. College reps will scan your barcode to

Seniors…have you visited your top colleges? If you haven’t done so already, visit your top colleges soon to narrow your choices. Application deadlines will start hitting later this this fall! Follow these tips for a successful visit: Contact the admissions office at least two weeks in advance to schedule your visit. Make appointments

with an admissions representative, financial aid counselor, and a faculty member in the area of study that interests you.

Check out the college website before your visit. Most college sites have a section for prospective students where you can learn about the admissions process, types of majors, student services, and employment opportunities. You might even be able to schedule your visit online.

Visit while school is in session. You won’t get the true flavor during breaks or finals week. Ask LOTS of questions. See this Go.Visit.College! handout on the EducationQuest webpage for good

questions to ask. Parent Tool Naviance's Family Connections makes college research easy!! Whether it's matching colleges to a student's career interests or comparing admissions rates at a student's top college choices, the college planning tools allow students and families to make informed decisions about their options by comparing colleges and univer-sities, exploring scholarship opportunities, tracking college applications and accessing a variety of other college research materials. Parents of Millard West students may set up their own Naviance accounts by emailing you student's first and last name and grade to Mrs. Cary ([email protected]) in the Guidance Office for log-in information.

GUIDANCE OFFICE NEWS

The College Admissions Process: Priority vs. Regular Deadlines A priority deadline is the deadline by which a 12th grade student must submit his or her application in order to be considered for admission and financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants, or loans. The regular deadline is deadline by which a 12th grade student must submit his or her application in order to be considered for admission only. In other words, students who apply for admission after the priority deadline will not be eli-gible to receive financial aid. While not all post-secondary institutions have priority deadlines, students should research each of their pro-spective colleges to find out if a priority deadline exists.

Examples of upcoming priority deadlines are as follows:

Creighton University: January 7, 2013

Kansas State University: November 1, 2012

University of Nebraska Kearney: February 1, 2013

University of Nebraska Lincoln: January 15, 2013

University of Nebraska Omaha: February 1, 2013

Students are able to access information about priority and regular deadlines through their Naviance accounts and the university website. If you have any further questions concerning this topic, please contact Mrs. Munoz or Mrs. Reoh in the guidance department at (402) 715-6015.

Band News

Congratulations to the Varsity Marching Band for their outstanding performances at the Bellevue East High School Chieftain Marching Invitational. The band finished in 1st Place in both the Prelims and Finals Competition and received the awards for Best Music, Best Visual, and Best Effect. Great start to the competition season!

Our remaining competitions are: Columbus Marching Invitational (Columbus, NE), Festival of Bands (Sioux Falls, SD), Omaha Marching Invitational (Omaha), and the NSBA State Marching Band Competition (Omaha). Good Luck throughout the season! The Bands hosted the 3rd Annual Wildcat Classic on September 15. Nine bands competed this year in Prelims and Finals Competition. Our numbers were up again this year and it was a very successful day. Several of the judges (many from out of state) and directors commented that it was the smoothest run competition they have been to. A huge thank you to Susan Rhodes, Janice Kolomaya, and Mitzi Magsam for all their work in organizing the competition, and to all our parents and students who volunteered. Our Wildcat Marching Band is traveling to Philadelphia in November to march in the Philadelphia Thanksgiv-ing Day Parade, which is the oldest Thanksgiving Day Parade in the country. We will have information on how to watch the webcast of the parade for those who are interested. Thank you to our major corporate sponsors – Omaha Steaks and Hy-Vee for their support! Go green for the band. Cans for the band is October 19 – 21. Please drop off your cans at the trailer in the parking lot.

ATHLETICS FOR THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR It is not too soon to be planning ahead for participation in athletics for the next school year. All students and parents are reminded that in order to participate in interscholastic NSAA athletics & activities, all students must do the following:

1. Pass a minimum of 20 credits during the 3rd and 4th terms of 2011-12. If you will not earn 20 credits, you must take summer school to earn those credits in order to participate in athletics for the first semester of 2012-2013. West students must be enrolled in a minimum of two classes in each nine week term. We strongly recommend a minimum of three courses and encourage students to register for four classes each nine weeks.

2. Have a physical exam by a licensed physician after May 1, 2012 and have the required forms completed.

3. Complete the student Participation/required forms, complete the Emergency Card, plus the Transportation Form. Turn them into the Millard West Activities Office.

4. Millard Public Schools has an annual non-refundable participation fee of $60.00 for each student partici-pating in NSAA sponsored interscholastic competitions. All students participating who have paid the $60.00 fee receive the Millard West student athletic admission pass and a participation card.

When all of the above steps have been completed and filed in the activities office, each student will be issued an Athletic Participation Card, which verifies that they have met all requirements for participation in athletics. Each student must give their Participation Card to their respective coach when checking out for their first practice. NO STUDENT MAY PRACTICE UNTIL THEIR PARTICIPATION CARD IS TURNED IN TO THEIR COACH. PLEASE! Don’t put off getting your physical or completing and turning in the necessary forms. Get them turned in well ahead of the first scheduled practice. A NEW PARTICIPATION CARD IS REQUIRED ANNUALLY FOR PARTICIPATION IN NSAA ATHLETICS & ACTIVITIES.
