Disciple I is definitely an adventure! Reading the stories from the Bible at this time of my life leads me to ponder the people and events in new ways and to find new God-given insights. I know that I heard the scriptures read in worship and Sunday School all my life—60 years worth! I read the Bible straight through 3-4 times as a young adult. I had two semesters of Bible overview in seminary. What is so amazing is that God is doing a new thing in me now as I start this spiritual journey of Bible study with 13 other folks. We read the stories of the people like Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, and Sarah. (Can you tell that we’re in the begin-ning of the Bible?) We’re beginning to realize that the individual stories are really a part of a much bigger story—God’s story. The Bible is the most important story of what God did in creating us and entering into relationship with people—who tend to go their own way instead of going with God. We’re discovering that going your own way is Sin. The Bible is the story of what God did, is doing, and will do in renewing our relationship with God. All because God loves us.

As I think about the Bible stories and God’s story, I’ve been wondering what story are we really living? Is it our own personal story of success and failure? Our family’s story of the past and our achievements? Our nation’s history and values? What is our story? Are we living in the midst of God’s story?

Wanting to live into God’s story, Debbie

DEBBIE’S DARING ADVENTURE

PETE’S PLACE I'm writing this from home on Sunday afternoon after a Sulphur Springs Wildcat win on Friday night, a Kansas State Wildcat win on Saturday, and a Dallas Cowboy win on Sunday - it's been a great football weekend! You just have to love a good football weekend - we don't get them very often. It has been a good weekend for some other reasons too.

Thursday I started the HCI program. That stands for Healthy Church Initiative. Our church is involved with six other church-es in a discussion and reading group that is designed to in-crease membership and attendance. Not only am I involved but five other people from our church are involved. They will meet with laity from the other six churches and read and discuss with them. Thursday's meeting was quite productive and I’m looking forward to the future meetings. I'll let you know how things are going as we proceed. Saturday we had our third Emmaus prac-tice in Paris. The men's walk is in October and should be excel-lent. The practice was energizing both for my spiritual growth and in strengthening friendships - it was good!

But maybe the best part of the weekend was today - worship. The music, prayers, communion - all of it was great. I want to thank you for that. Many of you take the time to shake my hand, give me a hug, and tell me that you really enjoyed the service or that it was meaningful for you. You and your true worship of our Lord is the thing that makes worship meaningful - not only for you but for me as well. Sunday is a day that I worship along with you. I don't worship if you aren't there - if you aren't there to worship. So, thank you for being there - to worship, because when you worship, I worship.

Speaking of being there - don't forget the Laity Banquet on Oc-tober 7th. Our new bishop, Bishop McKee will be there as will our interim District Superintendent LaBarr. Call the office and make your reservation today!

It has been a great weekend - thank you.

Grace and Peace Pete

On Sunday, November 4, we’ll remember and celebrate the saints from our church who have touched our lives and now are part of the eternal community with God in heaven.

We’ll be contacting the families soon to invite them to join us at either the 8:30 or 10:45 a.m. services on the day that Daylight Savings Time ends. Mark your calendar to worship with us on that blessed day. Below is a list of those we will be remembering. If you have questions or notice that we have missed a name, please feel free to call the church office at 903-885-2185.

CHRISTIAN BOOKS, VIDEOS, FICTION, TEACHING MATERIALS

Look What’s New in the ARC...

“A lot more than I expected.”

That’s the way a new church member reacted to her first visit to the church Academic Re-source Center (ARC) in August. She has returned more than once to check out Chris-tian videos.

Now in its fourteenth year since the library was re-opened in the summer of 1999, ARC is meeting its defined ministry to the congre-gation.

Harve Chapman, chair of the ARC Steering Committee which coordinates the various projects and weekly operations, observed, “we are seeing more new patrons along with our dedicated regulars who make a visit almost weekly.”

“The expansion of Bible study groups, the Walk to Emmaus, and Disciple Bible Study generates more interest and use of the re-sources,” Harve added.

QUICK FACTS ARC NAME:

In 1999 when the Library re-opened, ARC became the acronym for Academic Resource Center.

LOCATION: The ARC Library is located on the first floor of the Education Building between the nursery and the parlor.

HOURS: Sundays 8:00 am-12:00 noon Wednesdays 5:00 pm-7:30 pm

TEACHER MATERIALS: A large special section is devoted to multiple copies of Sunday school or Bible study lessons and leaders guides; a variety of Bible transla-tions, commentaries, concordances, dictionar-ies, maps and a study carrel.

CHILDREN’S SECTION: The large children’s section is filled with ap-propriate Bible stories, fiction and dozens of educational videos.

ARCHIVES-MEMORABILIA: In 2000, the sub-committee catalogued in 3-ring binders historical photos, newsletters, pictorial directories and artifacts which are the core of our valuable collection. In 2010, we added the “Memories Wall” of historical pho-tos posted in the Gather Room. In 2011, we began assembling information in a large news-paper size format of “Major Gifts” to the church. (see page to right)

NEW ARRIVALS:

Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges The writer poses the questions: What ever happened to sin? Have Christians become so occupied with major sins of society that we have lost sight of our need to deal with subtle sins?

Living On The Ragged Edge by Charles Swindoll In a world where anxiety, pressure, ulcers and depression are common, the writer shows how to survive the rat race, make the most of aging, and find wisdom for every day living.

Playing With Purpose by Mike Yorkey This interesting paper-back takes you inside the lives of Tim Te-bow, Jeremy Lin, Josh Hamilton and other top athletes. Telling how these guys make a positive difference with their lives on and off the field of play. All Christian models with an inspiring pur-pose.

SMALL GROUP STUDY:

Out Live Your Life by Max Lucado Includes 4-session DVD, participants book and leaders guide. Lucado (a writer who preaches, and a preacher who writes) tells real-life stories of people who are making their lives count.

I Saw The Lord by Anne Graham Lotz Includes 8-session DVD, student book and leaders guide. The daughter of Billy Graham, Anne helps you gain a fresh and trans-forming vision of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The Life You’ve Always Wanted by John Ortberg Includes 6-session DVD, participants and leaders guides. Ortberg, the author of It All Goes Back in the Box, suggests dis-ciplines for ordinary people, especially how to be guided by the Holy Spirit.

CHRISTIAN BOOK-WORMS FREQUENTLY HANG OUT

The Church Library, Where...

Do you remember when a long, narrow room with windows on the South and one wall of shelving on the North was the library for the First United Methodist Church? It was behind the choir room and to the left of the Chapel/Jr. High Classroom. The books were “castaways”. Every time a pastor left behind some seldom used “religious” books, they found a home in the book closet (that was really all it was!).

Now I can find up-to-date, relevant materials on the Bible and other Christian topics in our Aca-demic Resource Center. Makes teaching Sunday School a whole lot easier! We even have 2 sets of the New Testament Series by Dr. Charles Barclay! My favorite.

Thanks to Have Chapman, his help mates through the years and the Building Committee when First United Methodist Church was remodeled several years ago for their diligence and foresight to up-grade and create the Academic Resource Center (better known as the ARC). We have come a very long way, but we haven’t reached perfection—we are just in that process.

I am thankful for the blessings of the ARC resources. Our class, The Seekers, often develops its own material for class teachings. Having access to secondary resources is vital to preparation for these lessons. These resources provide the information necessary to help live out our Christian lives throughout the week.

Darrell Horton, Seekers Class teacher, previews the new Holy

Land series of maps. (see details in box below)

Archives Portfolio God rejoices when his children learn

the discipline of giving. The above is the preamble for our newest component in the ARC archives. The newspaper-size format cap-tures the facts and the members who have made major gifts to FUMC over the years. Debbie Young (above) has completed 15 pages since 2010. This “Major Gifts Portfolio” will remain a work-in-progress.

Colorful, slick-stock 27”x27” with detailed narrative, mounted on convenient easel stand.

Now available from ARC Library for use by classes and study groups.

So you’re a new church member. Welcome to the ARC Library which is user-friendly.

There’s plenty of signage to help you find your way in the Dewey decimal world. And now almost 4,000 resources, including books, DVDs, CDs, even some cassette tapes. For first time visitors, there are clear procedures for checking out. Most materials are on a 3-week check-out; but can be on “extended use” if requested.

We are sharing on this page recent comments from two of our regular patrons:

Prayer is a two-way conversation between God and the per-son praying. To pray is to believe is a God who hears our prayers. Prayer, He taught us, is an act of faith. In our faith with God He gives us the gift of Grace. We know God re-sponds to our prayers.

When we come into our prayer room on Tuesday morning at 10:00 am we feel the presence of our Lord and Savior. “When two or more are present I will be there.” That is God telling us that.

Our prayer list includes what names are given to us and oth-ers. We not only pray together for our people but every day of the week. We take this to heart and know God hears our prayers.

Our prayers concern love, hope, healing, and other needs. We pray for God’s personal touch on each person that is suffering or in fear or doubt. We know God has answered our prayers for we have heard and seen healing and improve-ments. We keep in contact by cards, phone calls and visits to know how everyone is doing. We want you to know we care and love you.

Sometimes we may feel God isn’t helping or listening. God hears and He answers. It may not be the way we want it but He answers in His way always.

Never forget God is always with you and knows your need. It is comforting to know that someone is with you and will never leave you.

We know this because the Bible tells us so.

First UMC is living into a new program from the North Texas Conference called MinistrySafe for creating and sustaining a safe envi-ronment in all of our church ministries for children, youth, and vulnerable adults. If you are currently serving in ministry at FUMC and have not taken the online training, let your ministry area director know. If you want to serve in one of our ministry areas, con-nect with the ministry area director (Adrienne-Children, Jason-Youth, Carol-Music, Debbie-Missions) for background check and online training instructions. About 90 folks have taken the online video training and test; as well as having a background check to prepare for volunteering in our exciting ministries. When you receive an invitation from MinistrySafe, click on the link and choose the CHURCH box for the video and test. Thank you to all who have already participated! Thank you to our church family for your support !

This is a Test . . . Ok, this is a test to see if we are utilizing the best methods to communicate with our youth families. So if you are a youth parent and do read the Spire for information about the youth schedule and events, please email me at [email protected] and just say, “I read the Spire”. Please do not tell others to do this if you read this. I want a true picture of who is reading this. Thank you.

WELCOME HOME

We are pleased to welcome Ed & Darlene Pollacek as our newest members.

The Pollaceks joined our congregation on September 16th by transfer of membership

from another denomination.

We’re excited to have eight persons in our fall class to be-come Stephen Ministers. Upon finishing the 50 hour train-ing in listening, caring, and helping, First UMC will then have nineteen trained Stephen Ministers to extend the car-ing that our church offers to our members and our commu-nity.

Here’s how you may participate in our church’s Stephen Ministry. If you are aware of someone who is going through divorce, loss of a loved one, difficult illness, spiritu-al darkness, or family problems and who might just need a caring Christian friend, then call or talk with Debbie Riggsby, Tom Young, Dennis Schmersahl, or Lew Riggsby about the possibility of connecting your friend with a Ste-phen Minister. Your Christ-like help in connecting some-one may just make all the difference!

To see a PBS video article on Stephen Ministry, go to www.StephenMinistries.org. Click on the video near the upper left which will take you to the PBS website and the video.

A HUGE thank you to all of the volunteers who are making Wonderful Wednesdays possible! If you haven’t made it to a WW yet, it’s never too late to join in the fun. All ages are invited to join us every Wednesday night from 6:00-8:00.

Christmas Musical It’s Christmas in Hopkins County! Well, maybe not yet, but we’re already working on our children’s musical—The Se-cret of Snowflake County. During Wonderful Wednesday, our elementary children (K-5th) are learning songs and cho-reography for a brand new musical. The Secret of Snow-flake County has super-fun music that our kids already love, lots of parts with fun costumes and sets, and a wonderful message we can all relate to. If you would like to help with any part of the musical (especially costumes and sets!), please let Adrienne know as soon as possible by email at [email protected] or by calling the church office at 903-885-2185.

Mark your calendars! Children will share The Secret of Snowflake County with you on Wednesday, December 12th at 6:30pm!

North Texas Conference Bishop Michael McKee has announced that the Rev. Dr. Joan G. La Barr will serve as interim superintendent of the East District through the remainder of the 2012-13 conference year. Dr. La Barr is a retired elder with 30 years of active service to the conference. She is being as-signed to the interim position and will serve from October 1 through the June 2013 meeting of the North Texas Annual Conference.

Dr. La Barr’s assignment to the East District follows the appointment of the District’s present super-intendent, the Rev. Paul Gould, as senior pastor of First United Methodist Church, Plano.

In making this announcement, Bishop McKee observed that Dr. La Barr’s many years of experience as a pastor, district superintendent and conference director of communications gives her a broad knowledge of the conference and churches that will be an asset to the East District and Bishop’s Cab-inet in the months ahead.

Bishop McKee explained that assigning an interim superintendent will allow him time and opportunity to learn more about the dis-trict and its needs before appointing a superintendent for the long term.

Dr. La Barr’s appointment history includes service as associate pastor and minister of communications for Lovers Lane UMC, Dal-las; senior pastor, First UMC, Gainesville; superintendent, Wichita Falls District; senior pastor, Christ UMC, Farmers Branch; and NTC director of communications. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Howard Payne University in her hometown of Brownwood, TX; a Master of Arts degree in Communication from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA; and the Master of Theology and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Perkins School of Theology, SMU, Dallas.

Dr. La Barr is married to the Rev. Dr. William E. (Bill) La Barr, pastor of Plymouth Park UMC, Irving. Their family includes three adult children and three grandchildren.
