Thomas Mar Eusebius was born in Mylapra in the state of Kerala. His home parish is Sacred Heart Malankara Catholic Church, Mylap-ra. He was ordained priest for Syro-Malankara Catholic Church on 29 December 1986. After his ordaination he held the following positions: assistant pastor and pastor in several commu-nities, then dean and professor of philosophy at St. Mary's Malankara Major Seminary.

He served as Secretary-General of the Arch-bishop of the Syro-Malankara, Public Relations Officer, Coordinator for Interreligious Dialogue and Secretary of the council of priests. He was also the director of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, a school in Trivandrum. Abun Thomas Mar Eusebius was ordained bishop on September 21,2010 at St. Mary's Malankara Catholic Cathedral, Trivandrum

As the summer vacation has reached its end, school bells ring and text-books begin to open. Children begin to pack their bags with all the nec-essary materials they need for their academic year. Just as preparation for learning in school has begun, it has also begun in church as well. In unison with the school year, Sunday School starts as well. Lead by Babu (Francis) Thazhamon and overseen by our Achan, Fr. Daiju Kuriakose, the year has begun in a timely and organized manner. With new text-books and new material, the children are already deeply immersed in the core values of our Church and our Malankara heritage. With class dis-cussions, lecture style teaching and connections to daily life, Sunday School has already become part of their daily lives. As the year carries on, we ask for the prayers of our Achan and the congregation, the inter-cession of Blessed Virgin Mary and the blessings of our Father in heaven to guide the children in spirituality, truth and love. - Jonathan M.

Kalloor (now Bishop Yooo-hanon Mar Chrysostom) and Rev. Dr. Peter Kochery gave their valuable services as co-ordinators in North America. Apostolic visitator. At the request of the Malanka-ra Catholic Hierarchy, headed by His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Cyril Mar Baselios of happy memory, on June 18th 2001, Servant of God Pope John Paul II appointed Monsignor Isaac Thottunkal (now His Beatitude Moran Mar Baselios Cleemis Catholicos) as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archieparchy of Trivandrum with the special charge as Apostolic Visitor for the Malankara Catholic faithful residing in North America and Europe. Monsignor Isaac Thottunkal was consecrated as Bishop with the name Isaac Mar Cleemis on August 15th, 2001 and His Excellency started his official visit to USA on Oc-tober 23rd, 2001, basing his resi-dence at Mar Ivanios Malanka-ra Catholic Centre, New York. The Apostolic Visitor also visit-ed the various centres in Ger-many and other missions across Europe. In Germany, the activities for the Malankara Catholics were co-ordinated by Rev. Fr. John Varghese Easwa-rankudiyil, the co-ordinator appointed by the His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Cyril Mar

Since the 1980s, the Malankara Catholic presence has been steadily growing across North America. The Syro-Malankara Catholics began to gather in New York in 1984 with the blessings of Archbishop Bene-dict Mar Gregorios of happy memory, who officially inaugu-rated the Malankara Catholic Missions in North America on August 30th, 1984 at Fordham University, New York, in the presence of His Eminence Car-dinal John O’Connar of the Archdiocese of New York. Lat-er, such communities orga-nized themselves in various parts of North America. Although individually unique & diverse, all of our missions share one thing in coming: that is a passionate love for the tradition & ancient practices of the Syro-Malankara liturgy and a strong desire to pass on this great love & spirit to the youth, who are the future leaders of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church in North America. Taking into consideration of the need of co-ordinating the Malankara Missions and our Pastors, the His Grace appoint-ed one priest, Rt. Rev. John Melamparambil Remban as the first co-ordinator. Chorbishop (Corepiscopa) Geevarghese Mannikkarott, Rev. Fr. John

Baselios. Under the able lead-ership of His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Cleemis, missions in North America and Europe advance greatly with enhanced vigour and vitality. The Holy See appointed His Excellency Dr. Isaac Mar Cleemis as the Metropolitan of Tiruvalla on September 11th, 2003 and he took charge of the Eparchy of Tiruvalla Diocese on October 2nd, 2003, continu-ing his mission work as apos-tolic administrator in North America and Europe until the appointment of His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Thomas was appointed as the new Ap-ostolic Visitor and the Auxilia-ry Bishop of the Archieparchy of Trivandrum on January 5th, 2005. He was consecrated as a Bishop on February 19th, 2005. His Excellency started his offi-cial visit to Europe in June 2005 and to North America in July 2005 Chorbishop Geevarghese Man-nikarott, the Assistant Admin-istrator, helped the bishop un-til November 10th, 2007. From its humble beginning in 1984, we now have 13 missions scattered throughout North America, from Canada (the Great White North) to deep in the heart of Texas:

Back-to-school season is the busiest

season of the year. It’s that time of the

year when children go back to school

(for some, going to school for the first

time) and parents get back to their

regular work routines. In this crazy

season, there are so many things to be

done, both for parents and kids that

we often forget about the family’s spir-

ituality. Most of the time, we catego-

rize spirituality as “one more thing to

think about and do.”

I invite you to consider spiritu-ality not as one more thing to add to your “to-do” list, but as an attitude that permeates your entire life. Spirit-uality as attitude doesn’t add more things to our “to-do” list. Instead, it provides us with a way of looking at and completing all of the things al-ready on our “to-do” list. As we get back into our regular routines, let us focus on bringing this attitude into our lives and families. Here are some ways

you can achieve this:

Start off your day with a fam-ily prayer. Our Malankara Church offers us many prayers to be said throughout the day, in which one of them includes the Morning Prayer/ Prabatha Prathana. It will not only help you to bond with the family, but will also give a good start to your hectic day. Before starting any work that you may have, surrender the work that needs to be done, the people involved in the work, and the decisions that need to be made for the work to God Almighty. This way you will be sure enough to be guid-ed by the Holy Spirit in whatever you are doing. When you have con-cluded your work, never forget to thank the Lord God for helping you with it.

After you come home from work or school, instead of gluing yourself to the sofa and watching television, share what happened throughout your day to your par-ents/children. Share with the family how you experienced God’s presence that day. It could be through your colleagues, teachers, classmates, etc., but in sharing this we will help each other to grow in spirituality. End your day off with the Evening Prayer/ Sandhya Prathana. As His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mar Koorilos once said, “Prayer should not be the spare wheel when you are in trouble. Prayer should be the steering wheel which guides you down the right path.” Let us work together to make this school/work year a blessed one.

From September 1st-8th, Ettu Nombu was observed, which consist of prayer and fasting in connection with the birth of Mother Mary. Prayer meetings were held everyday of the Ettu Nombu, both in the Mississauga and the Scarborough location. Following the fast, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mother Mary was cele-brated on Wednesday, September 8th with a mass at St. Eugene’s Chapel. During the homily, Daiju Achan em-phasized the importance of praying the rosary, and its power to help us with our countless problems in our lives. After the Holy Qurbono, the community had the nercha paisam, thus concluding the festivities of the day. Through this celebration, we affirm our faith and devotion to Mother Mary and we should continue to seek her intercession in all our prayers. -Lynn B.

On Sunday, September 12, 2010, St. Mary's Malankara Catholic Mission, Toronto celebrated it's annual Perun-nal commemorating the feast of Nativity of Mother Mary. The celebration of the feast started with the Ettu Nombu, fasting and praying to Mother Mary for her special intercession in our lives. There were evening prayers, novena, and Bible reflection each evening till the end of the eighth day. Beginning of September marked the start of the Ettu nombu which was then followed by a concluding mass on September 8th, 2010. The official celebration of the feast of Mother Mary was conducted the following Sunday. Our Holy Qurbono was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Paul Vellukunnath, Rev. Fr. George Parayil, and Rev. Fr. John Kuriakose. Fr. George Parayil gave us a beautiful homily on Mary's motherly love for us. He explained to us in depth what sort of a person Mary was and how much she yearns for us to be like her. We had a procession around the church an-nouncing to the world of our celebration. It was ended with a good dinner after the mass, marking yet again to be a blessed Perunnal.

The Liturgical year of the Malankara Catholic Church begins with the feast of the Sanctification of the Church (Qudos Eetho). It is the Sunday nearest to the last day of October. Therefore, if October 30th or 31st is on Sunday, it is Qudos Eetho Sunday. Otherwise, the first Sunday of November is the first Sunday of the liturgical year. It follows with the celebration of the Renovation of the Church (Hudos Eetho). The Sunday of the Sanctification of the Church constitutes an invitation to the Church to prepare for a great event, which is the encounter with the Lord. The Bride (Church) is called to sanctify herself, be holy and without blemish in order to meet her Bridegroom, The Lord, who is Holy and the source of all holiness: “that he might present the church to himself in splendour, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.” (Ephesians 5:27 RSV) The members of the Church, therefore, are called upon to sanctify themselves and follow the call-ing to be holy like the Holy One who called them: “but as he who called you is holy, be holy your-selves in all your conduct; since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy’”. (1 Peter 1:15-16) Holiness is a mark of the Church (we believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church):

In the Creed we profess the Church to be one holy catholic and apostolic. These four characteristics, inseparably linked with each other, indicate essential features of the Church and her mission. The Church does not possess them of herself; it is Christ who, through the Holy Spirit, makes His Church one, holy, catholic, and apostolic, and it is He who calls her to realize ach of these qualities. (Catechism of the Catholic Church Section 811)

Each member, therefore, is called to be holy by virtue of his or her baptism. However, the way to holiness is the way of the Cross. To be holy requires us to be in total obedience to the Lord. We have to submit to Him in everything and lead a life which befits our calling as Christians. Holiness is the ultimate goal of Christ’s calling and His redemptive death and resurrection. We all are called to be holy people, but based on our dedication and faithfulness we attain different degrees of holi-ness. We all are given the chance to be holy. Some of us, however, walk in the path of holiness far-ther than others. Those who reach higher degrees of holiness, through sacrifices and suffering for the sake of the Lord, are called saints. They become intercessors for us that we may complete our race and attain our salvation by being faithful to the Lord. The fact that the Lord is Holy and He wants us too to be like Him should not discourage us my brothers and sisters. He knows our weaknesses and He is able and willing to help our lack of faith and sympathize with us: “For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weak-nesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15). By celebrating Qudos Eetho, the Church is presented as the Bride of Christ, as seen in Saint Paul’s letter to the Ephesians 5:23-32. Christ prepares for his marriage feast (Rev 15:6-7) by participating in the mysteries of the Christ throughout the year. Thus we have before us, from the beginning, the mystery of the Church as the Bride of Christ whom he prepares for his marriage festival by teaching her how to walk in his footsteps. - Br. Jobin
