Jesus did not compare God to an unjust judge. He said, if someone like the judge could be persuaded to give a widow jusce, how much more would God answer those who cried for mercy (Ex 22:20-22). God's presence and love through: worshipping together, spreading the Good News,

LUKE 18:1-8 (Exodus 17:8-13; Psalm 121; 2 Timothy 3:14―4:2)

KEY VERSE: "Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night?" (v. 7).

TO KNOW: Jesus knew that his disciples might lose heart after he ascended to his Father, so he encouraged them to persist in prayer. He told them a parable about a widow who pleaded with a judge for her rights. In contrast to the powerful judge, the widow represented the poor and defenseless. The Law of Moses was meant to protect helpless members of society such as widows, orphans and aliens (Deut 10:18; 14:29; 16:11). This judge might have been a paid mag-istrate appointed by Herod or by the Romans, for he disregarded both God's law and human need. Without support of a husband and lacking resources of any kind, she had no hope of expecting justice. Nevertheless, the woman persisted in her demands, and the judge finally relented. Jesus did not compare God to an unjust judge. He said, if someone like the judge could be persuaded to give a widow justice, how much more would God answer those who cried for mercy (Ex 22:20-22). Christians must work for God's justice and support legislation on behalf of the poor and defenseless.

TO LOVE: Who are the people in my community whose rights are not heard?

TO SERVE: Lord God, help me to be just in all my dealings.

From the Pastor’ s Desk

MY 10TH ANNIVERSARY: On Tuesday, October 13, 2009, I was offi-cial named pastor of St Raphael Church in Springdale. Most of you know me well enough by now, that I am not one to celebrate anni-versaries or birthdays. It is just another day. But this week, I com-plete my 10th year as your pastor & begin my 11th year with you. It has been an honor to serve you for a decade and I look forward to the years ahead. Keep me in your prayers as I keep you in mine.

GONE A LOT: Over the next 7 weeks, I will be out of town a lot for various reasons. Right now, I am on vacation in Philadelphia with my brother (be assured we are watching trains). There will be many trips to Little Rock for meetings with the Bishop. There are Continu-ing Education classes, the workshop in San Antonio, and of course, Thanksgiving. I want to thank my associates for picking up the extra work in my absence. December will be a bit calmer but there are a few meetings that will have me out of town.

RELIGIOUS SISTERS: Our sisters arrived in Springdale on Monday, September 30th and spent a week with us in orientation preparing for their culturalization classes in San Antonio. They settled into their new home (the Tontitown rectory), visited their office space at the Youth House, met our staff & key leaders, learned how to use their new phones, laptops & debit card and applied for their Social Security cards. They left for San Antonio for 10 weeks of classes on Sunday October 6th. Keep them in your prayers. They will return to St Raphael on Friday, December 13th and will begin their new minis-try in the New Year. In the month of November, I will write three different articles on three different aspects of the Sisters new ministry at St Raphael. The first will deal with the cost of having the sisters here over the next 5 years. How it is possible to have them here and what our yearly cost will be. The second article will discuss what the sister’s new ministry is not. My biggest worry with our sisters coming here to St Raphael is that many will not understand that their mission and ministry is different than the sisters who were here before. Fi-nally, in the third article, I will explain what their ministry will be in the parish. I will explain what Human Development Services means and who will most benefit from the sister’s presence at St Raphael. Sergio Garcia, our Hispanic Coordinator and I will be with them in San Antonio in mid-November to learn more about how we are to work together.

VIDEO PROECTION SYSTEM: We finally have raised enough funds to go forward with our video projection system. The contract has been signed by the bishop and the system should be installed by the end of the year. Thank you to all who have made this possible with your generous donations.

ART AND ENVIRONMENT: For the past 20 years, Jackie Anderson has led our Arts and Environment Committee. The committee is not only responsible for the beautiful decorations at Christmas and Easter but throughout the year, each and every weekend. Jackie is stepping down and we need a new coordinator for our committee. Most of the work has to do with scheduling; making sure each week there are committee members in charge of that weekend or special celebra-tions. But too, the coordinator has the ability to set the vision for the Sanctuary (with my approval). If you are a creative person, interested and have the time, please email me at [email protected]. Jackie has informed me that she will be willing to help the new coor-dinator transition.

Ministry Spotlight Mercy Mission (Mision Misericordia)

Sponsored by Family Retreats & Camping (Campamentos y Riteros)

Last year this group collected 518 blankets thanks to the generosity of the parish!!

These blankets are sent with the members who are traveling back home for the holidays. Primarily they are sent to Mexico &

El Salvador, but some of the blankets even stay here and are handed out through our Food Pantry.

They provide blankets to those (young children, the elderly, families, etc.) who do not have the money to live in a home or those who live in poor conditions like so many do in Mexico and El Salvador.

Thank you for your support again this year! Stop by and visit with members in the vestibule on Nov. 2nd & 3rd
