I you arent in the ag world, you most likely haventheard about the devastating loss that ranchers in westernSouth Dakota are struggling with aer being hit by winterstorm Atlas.

For some reason the news stations arent covering thisstory. I dont understand why they wouldnt. Tis storyhas heartbreak, tragedy and even a convenient tie into t hecurrent government shutdown. Isnt that what the news isall about these days?

But the news isnt covering this story. Instead the storyis spreading around on social media, Bloggers are writingrom their ranches in South Dakota. Bloggers are trying toexplain how the horrible happened. And now I am goingto join them to tell you the part o the story that I knowand I am going to ask you to help these people, because iyou are here reading this blog I know you give a crap aboutthese people.

Last weekend western South Dakota and parts othe surrounding states got their butts handed to them byMother Nature. A blizzard isnt unusual in South Dakota, the cattle are tough they can handle some snow. Tey haveor hundreds o years.

Unlike on our dairy arm, bee cattle dont live inclimate controlled barns. Bee cows and calves spend themajority o their lives out on pasture. Tey graze the grass

in the spring, summer and all and eat baled hay in thewinter.

In winter these cows and calves grow uzzy jacketsthat keep them warm and protect them rom the snow andcold.

Te cows and calves live in special pastures in thewinter. Tese pastures are smaller and closer to the ranch, they have windbreaks or the cows to hide behind. Teyhave worked or cows or hundred o years.

So whats the big deal about this blizzard? Its not really winter yet.Te cows dont have their warm jackets on. Te cows

are still out eating grass in the big pastures. Atlas wasntjust a snowstorm. Atlas was the kind o storm that candestroy the ranchers that have been caring or these cattleor hundreds o years.

Last weekend Atlas hit. It started with rain. Te rainsoaked the cows and chilled them to the bone. Inches andinches o rain ell. Te rain made horrible mud. Ten thewinds started. 80mph winds, hurricane orce. When thewind started the rain changed to snow. A lot o snow.

Te cows were wet, they were muddy and they didnthave their winter jackets when the wind and snow came.Wet snow. Heavy snow.

    The Adventures of Dairy Carrie

Te cows tried to protect themselves.Tey hid in low spots away rom the wind.Te low spots where the rain had turned

the ground to thick mud. Some got stuckin the mud. Some laid down to get awayrom the wind, to rest a little, they weretired rom trying to get away rom theweather when they were already so cold.

Te snow came down so heavy and soast the the low spots that the cattle werelaying in lled with snow. Not a ew incheso snow, not a oot o snow.

Enough snow that the cows and theircalves were covered in snow.

Te cows and calves suocated orroze to death.

Te caretakers o these cattle had nopower to save them, they had to stand byand take the lashings rom Mother Nature.Tey had no options. When it was all over, they went out to discover what they hadle.

Can you even imagine what that wouldeel like? Standing with your hands tied asyour lies living, breathing and mooingwork is destroyed. I cant imagine, I dontknow how I would recover rom a loss like

that.Tis wasnt just one or two herds o

cows. Tis wasnt just one or two amilies

that lost animals. Tis wasnt just a ewcows. ens o thousands o cows are gone. Some ranchers lost their entire herds. Allo their cows, gone.

In the all a cattle rancher sells theircalves to someone who specializes inraising them or market, its how a ranchgenerates income. Calves are the liebloodo a cattle ranch. Most ranchers had notyet sold their calves when Atlas hit. Teircalves are gone. Te cows that made thosecalves were pregnant with with next yearscalves.

Tose cows are gone, those calves aregone.

Meanwhile in Washington DC,the shutdown has doubly screwed theranchers. Te people that are supposed totry to help these people are unable to dotheir jobs. Te arm bill is held up again. No one knows when, how or i help isgoing to come.

    Insurance? Not likely.

When a food comes and your corn is fooded out youhave some options. Insurance or cattle is expensive and itcomes with hundreds o loopholes that make the gambleo arming without it the most practical choice or many.

Tere is no way around it, this storm has put someranchers out o business. ime will tell just how many.

Te AgChat Foundation has partnered with severalorganizations to create a grassroots eort to help thepeople who have lost so much.

You dont have to give money i you cant. You canhelp in other ways. Share this post with your riends, send

up a prayer or just keep these people in your hearts andminds as they continue into a new chapter o their lives.

Tank you rom the bottom o my heart or anythingyou are able to give. ~ Carrie(Dairy Carries blog was written on October 13th. TeGovernment Shutdown ended this morning.)

From the AgChat Foundation In an effort to bringemergency relief to ranchers affected by Winter StormAtlas, AgChat Foundation is uniting several groups andorganizations. With a goal of raising $500,000, the 501(c)3organization is able to gather donations and provide 100% ofthe contributions to the cattle and sheep ranchers of SouthDakota, Nebraska and Wyoming who need it most. Nearly$22,000 of the $500,000 goal has been raised so f ar.

While preliminary accounts are still limited, some

ofcials believe that upwards of 60,000 head of cattle andsheep were affected in the storm.Ranching families across the prairie are experiencing

the trauma and loss like never before. The loss of livestockis shocking to the core. Our hearts are raw, stated SouthDakota rancher Jodene Shaw.

She continues on her blog, you dont just simply gobuy new cowsand start over. The foundation is removed. The legacy. The years. The work. The love. The faith.

She also points out that the economical impact onfamilies but strongly voices concern over the toll on ranchersemotional investments. Near the end of the post, Shawreects, yesterday, as I sawlive cattle, I wanted to wrap myarms around their neck andkiss their faces.

Search and rescue effortshave been widely inhibited due

to the snow depths so full-scaleramications of the storm maynot be seen for some time.

You can give any amount to make a difference by goingagchat.org. 100% of your donation will go to ranchers inSouth Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming. If you would ratherdonate off line please send a check payable to AgChatFoundation:
