If this experiment were repeated in our church today, how many of us would still have our balloons unreleased at the end of the Mass? Many of us think of God's house as a place for seriousness, a place to close one's eyes and pray, but not a place for celebration. The parable in today's Gospel paints a different picture. The Christian assembly is a gathering of those who are called to the Lord's Supper. In the Eucharist we say: "Happy are those who are called to his supper." The Lord invites us to a banquet. Would you imagine at a banquet in which everyone sits stone-faced, and quiet? The Gospel shows us three possible kinds of guests. Firstly, the absentee guests are that they are not sinners. They were not engaged in sinful activity. One went to his farm, another to his business. These are decent employments. In reality, what keeps us away from the joy of the banquet? The thing that keeps us away from the joy of the banquet is not a sin but concern with the necessities of life. To be serious with your job is excellent, but when your job keeps you away from attending the Lord's Banquet, it then becomes an obstacle that hinders you from experiencing the joy of the Lord in your life. Secondly, the problem with the guest without the wedding garment is whether he had enough time to go home and put on his wedding garment. The point of the parable is: if you must go to a wedding, you must wear your wedding garment. By not wearing a wedding garment, he was physically in the banquet, but his mind and spirit were not there. In fact, it is better not to attend at all than to be there and yet not there. The invitation is to all, yet anyone who decides to attend has a responsibility to present himself/herself fit for the banquet. Finally, there are the guests who attend the wedding banquet, taking time to appear in the proper wedding garment. They are the only ones who have fun and enjoy the banquet. They are the models for us to follow. Dear brothers and sisters, today's Gospel sends a message to those who are keeping away from the Lord's Supper that they are missing out on the joy of life. To those of us who have accepted the Lord’s invitation to come in, this parable warns us not to take God's grace for granted, but to clean ourselves up and become the most beautiful person that we can be in God's sight. - Father Dominic Toan-Tran

WOULD YOU HAVE TIME TO COME TO THE LORD’S BANQUET?

At a World Mission Sunday’s Conference, people were given helium balloons and told to release them at some point during the talks when they felt joy in their hearts. Throughout the conference, people kept releasing balloons. At the end of the conference, it was discovered that most of them still had their balloons unreleased.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

This weekend we have the joyful celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation for 131 young women, young men and also adults of our parish family. What a cause for celebration! It is a great honor to have our Most Reverend Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito here with us as a successor of the apostles and a concrete link to thousands of years of Christian faith life. Our parish has many reasons to give thanks to God for the blessings and signs of hope that our newly confirmed members are for all of us. We are with them in prayer, support and good example as we welcome them into adult Christian responsibility.

The Sacrament of Confirmation evolved out of the earliest Christian practice of a second ritual that would ratify and "confirm" Baptism and accomplish full Initiation. The last step was the reception of Holy Communion. Confirmation was the Holy Spirit "sealing" the Baptism with spiritual gifts and virtues. This "sealing" of Baptism became more significant as the two rituals were separated in time and in the faith development of the Christian. Confirmation became a "sealing" of Baptism and also a rite of passage from childhood to young adulthood in the faith. Sometimes the language of the sacrament took on an almost militaristic tone as the new "soldier of Christ" was anointed for battle with sin and evil, and was clothed with the "armor" of the Spirit's gifts and virtues. In this regard a good image for our parish youth is our Patron Saint Joan of Arc dressed for combat and courageous in battle.

Before requesting and accepting the Sacrament of Confirmation, our candidates spend time in studying and reviewing the teachings of our faith so they can be clear about the way of life that they are embracing. They engage in Christian service projects that give them a way of putting their faith into action. They also bond more closely with a fully initiated Christian whom they have identified as a sponsor and role model. Another important dimension of the Sacrament is the choosing of a Confirmation name. It is an opportunity to seek the help of a favorite Saint or to take the name of another adult Christian who is a mentor and teacher of the faith. It is a great honor to be chosen as a Confirmation Sponsor and a responsibility that begins a spiritual relationship for life.

In the life of a parish, Confirmation is a powerful sign of vitality and a hope for the future. It reminds us that the faith that we cherish needs to be passed on from generation to generation, through rituals and the example of caring and faith filled mentors. The faith of our newly confirmed will be nurtured and grow within the context of our faith filled families. Together as a large Family of families, we support one another as we welcome the Holy Spirit and the Spirit's gifts and virtues into our lives as a parish. Come Holy Spirit!

Please pray for all of our newly confirmed members of our Saint Joan of Arc community. Together we will make a difference for the good, for love, peace and justice as we build the Kingdom of God and journey "Alive in the Spirit of Christ".

- Msgr. Michael D. McGraw

Next Sunday, October 22, we will gather as one Parish Family to celebrate our diversity and richness of traditions, customs, religious devotions and national foods. What a great opportunity to celebrate together these important dimensions of who we are as a sort of mini-United Nations here in Boca Raton. At the 12:15 Sunday Mass we will gather around the table of the Lord to be fed by Word and Sacrament. Our children will lead the way for us in their festive national dress and carrying flags of the countries of their heritage. This Holy Eucharist assists us in becoming all that we can become in grace and virtues so that we can transform our world. The Holy Eucharist itself gathers us together and forms One Body, the Body of Christ, out of our marvelous diversity. Our strength comes from God and

from our common purpose and mission. The Holy Spirit working within and through us energizes us and fortifies us for the vocation of the People of God--to be one, holy, Catholic and apostolic.

The sharing of food from many countries around the world will not be the least of the enjoyable events. What a culinary delight it is to wander down a "restaurant row" that includes special national foods prepared and shared with love and pride. It is amazing how many national cuisines will be represented so all are invited to bring hearty appetites and a sense of gastronomic adventure. Each will be served with a family touch that says "welcome to our home". Sharing food together also leads to other types of sharing and

conversation. This is how a "holy meal", one that is whole and shared in common, can overcome the fears, misunderstandings and prejudices that separate and divide. Mutual respect grows in direct proportion to the delicious food that is shared.

May our Providential God bless us on this day of sharing and growth in understanding, fun and friendships. We are building here on earth that "Peaceful Kingdom" that is our challenge and destiny. And we will be having a GREAT time.

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL: MANY FOODS, ONE PARISH

FROM THE SJA SOCIAL OUTREACH MINISTRY DIRECTOR

Deacon Bill Watzek SJA Catholic School Principal

The storm is over and almost forgotten except for the diminishing piles of debris along the side of the roadway but, for some, there is still a lot of work to do and extra expenses incurred from the damages caused by Irma. In a short week’s time, due to the generosity of our parishioners, we at the Care Ministry have had the opportunity of aiding people who were hit the hardest by the storm. Many people dependent on hourly wages lost days of work due to their places of employment being closed due to damage or power outage, and they are now faced with monthly bills that they just can’t pay. There are also those who were out of power for more than a week and lost a lot of food due to lack of refrigeration. Damage to homes from the storm itself is also a pressing issue for many families. With everything from trees downed on houses to water damage, some people find their homes uninhabitable. While many of us were very blessed to have little to no damage from the hurricane it is heartwarming to see that the Church at large through Catholic Charities, and our local churches are stepping up to aid those in need. I wish to thank everyone who joined in the collection on the weekend of Sept. 30/Oct. 1, it has already made a huge impact in the lives of many locals. God bless.

JOINING GOD’S FEAST By Mary Katharine Deeley

When I was growing up, Thanksgiving and Christmas were always great feasts in our house. Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn were on the menu in November. The December food lineup substituted roast beef for turkey, and my father would pour a little sip of sparkling wine for each of us kids—a once-a-year treat.

My mother always made a little extra, “because,” she said, “you never know when a guest might come by.” Sure enough, in one year or another, one of us would invite someone or a neighbor would stop in. There was always plenty, and we would feast and tell stories into the night.

Those memories and the ones I make with my own family now are as close as I can come to the banquet Isaiah and Jesus describe, and I’m sure they’re no match for that great feast in heaven.

But I think I know why Isaiah and Jesus use the metaphor. There is something sensual and earthy about gathering around a table with family and friends. It begins with the smells wafting through the house, the noise in the kitchen, the setting of the table with more than the everyday plates. We dress a little more carefully.

We are preparing for our family banquet. No matter what food is on the table, we’ll be fed with love that draws us in and accepts us simply because we are family.

Love is the gift we bring to the table, and love is the gift we receive in the act of breaking bread with one another. Our love feast needs our care and attention. And God’s feast deserves no less.

GOD INVITES US TO HIS TABLE BECAUSE HE LOVES US By Richard Rohr, OFM

God does not love us because we deserve it but because we need it. Does that sound startling? It shouldn’t. If there is one prime idea in the Bible, it is God’s undeserved love for what he has created. There is no accounting for God’s love. It is not earned. There is nothing we can do to attain it or lose it. All we can do is surrender to it, trust it, and let it flow through us.

The significant difference in this world is not between those who are worthy of God’s love and those who are not. (In truth, we are all unworthy to various degrees.) The significant difference is between those who know and enjoy God’s love and those who do not. God does not love us because we are good. We are good because God loves us. That is a major transformation of consciousness! It moves us from life as an obstacle course to life as a banquet to be eaten and shared.

We may be uncomfortable with this truth, especially if we think in terms of a merit system where we can change God’s feelings about us by doing good or evil. We cannot absorb this good news through conventional thinking, but rather the gospel must eliminate our attitudes of merit, reward, and punishment.

Before conversion, we often view God as a parent who controls, punishes, and rewards according to legitimate criteria. But God’s love doesn’t work that way. We can never keep our side of the bargain, measure up, or be good enough. But thatdoes not keep God from loving us.

COVENANT OF LOVE This is what makes the Bible extraordinary and different from other literature. It conveys the great and central theme of grace: God’s unearned favor is his steadfast, unilateral covenant of love. The merit system has been destroyed once and for all!

Human love depends upon the merits of something or someone: Is a person worthy of my love? Is he or she attractive? It’s because we find something good and beautiful that we are attracted to it. That’s the only way we know how to love. God’s love, however, is different because the object does not determine it. It is determined by the subject, by God’s self. By loving us, God is being true to God’s self—not working out some arithmetic about our degree of worthiness.

Perhaps nowhere in the Bible do we see God’s covenant love manifested more than in the recurring theme of the free but resented banquet. For example, in today’s Gospel the king sends his servants to call everyone to a wedding feast. (Note the symbolism of loving union.) But one by one, the invited guests make excuses.

They are not interested. The master becomes furious and sends out his servants again, this time into the main roads to invite “whomever you find,” bad and good alike. The banquet hall is finally filled—not with the “worthy” but with the willing!

GOD’S INCLUSIVENESS Throughout the Gospels, Jesus invokes banquet symbolism on many occasions. Along with the little child, it seems to be his primary metaphor. He eats with sinners, invites outcasts to share a meal, does not wash his hands or the food, and allows a woman to dine at a symposium for men. He always expands the meaning of the table, even breaking social conventions to communicate the hospitality and inclusivity of God.

If we are grateful and confident in God’s grace, we will spend our lives trying to give back to others what has been so graciously been given to us and invite all of God’s children to God’s table.

Isaiah 25:6–10a On this mountain the Lord of hosts will provide for all peoples.

Philippians 4:12–14, 19–20 I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me.

Matthew 22:1–14 Many are invited, but few are chosen.

A WORD FROM POPE FRANCIS Man takes control of everything. He believes he is God, he believes he is king. And wars...they do not exactly help to sow the seed of life but to destroy. It is an industry of destruction. It is also a system, also of life, that when things cannot be fixed they are discarded: we discard children, we discard the old, we discard unemployed youth. This devastation has created the culture of waste....May the Lord help us and give us the grace of...hope, [and] also the grace of courage to emerge from all this destruction.
