Si conservaras el recuerdo de nuestras faltas, ¿Quién habria, Señor, que se

salvara? Pero tu, Dios de Israel, eres Dios de perdon. Salmo 129, 3-4

WHO ARE YOU?

Are you the person you appear to be to others, or at least trying to be that

person? "Fake it until you make it" is a good strategy only so long as you're really

trying to head in the right direction.

Today we have two parables, both of which have to do with living with integrity, in

which our motives and actions really are consistent with who we say we are. For a

Christian, that means a life that truly corresponds to the Kingdom of God into

which we were initiated at baptism. In the first parable, that of the wedding

banquet, Jesus' adversaries reject God's invitation to participate in the banquet

— the life of the Kingdom of God.

These were religious people, very respectable on the outside, but dry on the inside.

Their hearts were closed to the possibility that God might ask something of them

that was unexpected and even unpopular. Their refusal creates an opening for us:

access to the kingdom for those who up to now had been excluded: those who had

not been raised in the faith of Israel. That's us, the Gentiles!

We then receive a surprise! In the second parable of the wedding garment, which

is about the guest who arrived not properly dressed. This guy had just been drug in

off the street; how was he supposed to get a wedding garment? Hadn't the master

just said to drag in everyone they could find, good and bad alike? Yes, that was

what the Master said, but what Jesus meant was that once the dirty guest has

entered, he should dress like - put on - Jesus Christ and make His values his own.

That white garment with which we were dressed on the day of our baptism is the

wedding garment of the Kingdom of God, whereby we put on Christ and this

obligates us now to live consistent with the values of the Kingdom. Those who say

they are Christians but live like pagans are excluded. They are like the man not

properly dressed for the banquet. His punishment was to be "bound hand and feet

and cast out into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of

teeth."

Notice that Jesus' message here is very serious. His invitation is very generous, but

he's not playing games: he also punishes. God offers us free admittance into the

Kingdom of God, regardless of whether our past was bad or good, regardless of

whether we were raised in the faith or not ... but in order to remain in that

kingdom, he demands of us a life of integrity. That we truly be who we say we are.

¿QUIÉN ERES TÚ?

¿Es usted la persona que parece ser ante los demás, o al menos trata de ser esa

persona? "Ser Falso hasta lograrlo" es una buena estrategia sólo mientras usted

está realmente tratando de ir en la dirección correcta.

Hoy tenemos dos parábolas, las cuales tienen que ver con vivir con integridad, en

el cual nuestros motivos y acciones son realmente consistentes con lo que decimos

que somos. Para un cristiano, eso significa una vida que corresponde

verdaderamente al Reino de Dios en el cual fuimos iniciados en el bautismo. En la

primera parábola, la del banquete de bodas, los adversarios de Jesús rechazan la

invitación de Dios a participar en el banquete - la vida del Reino de Dios.

Eran personas religiosas, muy respetables por fuera, pero secas por dentro. Sus

corazones estaban cerrados a la posibilidad de que Dios pudiera pedir algo de ellos

que era inesperado e incluso impopular. Su negativa nos crea una apertura: el

acceso al reino para aquellos que hasta ahora habían sido excluidos: aquellos que

no habían crecido en la fe de Israel. ¡Esos somos nosotros, los gentiles!

¡Recibimos una sorpresa! En la segunda parábola de la prenda de la boda, que es

sobre el huésped que llegó no vestido adecuadamente. Este tipo acababa de ser

buscado en la calle; ¿cómo se suponía que iba a conseguir una prenda de boda?

¿Acaso no había dicho el maestro que llamaran a todos los que pudieran encontrar,

tanto buenos como malos? Sí, eso fue lo que el Maestro dijo, pero lo que Jesús

quiso decir fue que una vez que el huésped sucio ha entrado, debe vestirse como –

vestirse en - Jesucristo y hacer Sus valores suyos.

Esa prenda blanca con la que estábamos vestidos el día de nuestro bautismo es la

vestidura de la boda del Reino de Dios, por la cual nos revestimos en Cristo y esto

nos obliga ahora a vivir de acuerdo con los valores del Reino. Aquellos que dicen

que son cristianos, pero viven como paganos están excluidos. Son como el hombre

que no está bien vestido para el banquete. Su castigo iba a ser "la mano y los pies

atados y arrojado a la oscuridad afuera, donde habrá llanto y rechinamiento

de dientes".

Note que el mensaje de Jesús aquí es muy serio. Su invitación es muy generosa,

pero no está jugando: también castiga. Dios nos ofrece la entrada libre al Reino de

Dios, sin importar si nuestro pasado fue malo o bueno, sin importar si fuimos

criados en la fe o no ... pero para permanecer en ese reino, nos exige una vida de

integridad. Que realmente seamos quienes decimos que somos.
