WorshipSeriesOctober11-25Historians tell us
that cultural
change in our
world is happening
not only rapidly,
but exponentially.
Not only do we see
changes in tech-
nology, communication, and current events, but also in our ways of under-
standing moral, ethical, and cultural shifts as well. As societal norms and mo-
res are being defined and re-defined at a breakneck pace, assumptions about
what is “right” and “wrong” are not as clear as they once were. Our beliefs
about war, violence, sexuality, personal behavior, and a host of other issues
are more complex and less predictable then they once were.
What is a Christian to do?
As we watch so much change around us, how can we speak a word of truth?
How can we know the truth? Can we even use the word “truth” anymore?
How can we know what God wants for our world? What do the life and
teachings of Christ speak to our context? What should we believe?
Throughout the weeks of October, we will explore these questions together,
conversing with the New Testament book of James. While James is simple,
clear, and blunt, he is a force for love and not bluster. You are invited as to-
gether we learn from James, growing in knowledge and wisdom. Join us in
the coming weeks!

WednesdayNightsinOctober Next Wednesday night, October 21, we will look at the
many ways in which God has blessed FBC Lawrence—
and you are an important part of that blessing. Together
we will consider the results of last summer’s 3 Colors of
Ministry spiritual gifts study. If you have a book, but
haven’t filled out the questionnaire, you have time to do
so now. Let Pastor Cheryl know if you would like to visit
about your results. Or if you would like a book, let Pas-
tor Cheryl know, because we still have a few available.
Even if you didn’t take part in last summer’s combined
Sunday School study, come and help us discover the areas
where we, as a church, are most gifted, and those areas
where we can grow.
October 28 – Due to conflicting schedules, we will not
have a “Fall Fun Night”, instead we will have a themed
meal, followed by Sacred Music academy for the children
and a time for adults to gather.
Justice Matters continues to work together with congre-
gations across the city to fight against injustice in three
areas: children’s concerns, housing and homelessness,
and mental health. This month, the house meeting pro-
cess continues, educating and encouraging those in our
congregations about the needs of our community. And
next month (Nov. 16), we will gather for the communi-
ty problems assembly to talk about our strategy for the
coming months. Stay tuned for more information!
What Do You Like to Do?
God has blessed FBC Lawrence with persons gifted to
serve in many areas of ministry. God has gifted you. As
you serve in your giftedness, you find joy, you grow closer
to God, and you help others. It’s the truth!
The Nominating Committee is working hard to be sure
that people have an opportunity to minister in their areas
of interests and giftedness. So, if there is a particular min-
istry area that you would like to serve with, let us know.
If you are contacted about serving, we ask that you
prayerfully consider the request. That can be a trite
phrase, but doesn’t have to be. We believe that prayer is a
vital part of the process. You may contact anyone on the
committee to let them know your interest. Please pray for
all people who are considering these positions of service,
and for the committee.
Thank you, the Nominating Committee: Tim Bonner,
Chair; Carolyn Carlson, Jenny Purvis, Rev. Cheryl Ha-
rader

The Wall is Back
“Thanks be to God!
For the first time in
many years I feel I am
once again sitting in the
presence of God.
I can bend my head in
silence and pray silently
and communicate with
Him. A true feeling of
peace and
comfort. The Sanctuary is where we seek peace and
quiet. After the children's sermon they proceed out so re-
served and quiet that I know they know this is God's house,
too.
The wall is different and the narthex has changed, but it is
still a place for conversation and meeting long time friends
and meeting new people; a place to welcome visitors, to
introduce ourselves to them, and make them feel welcome.
Our goal is to be a welcoming church and to show our
pride and love for our home.” ~Annie Merriam, a long time
member of FBC.
