KRCB in the community

Nancy DobbsPresident and CEO

Dear Member, During 2009, KRCB has been incredibly fortunate to have received support from the wills of several long-term KRCB supporters and members. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that in these very rough financial times such unexpected gifts are like manna from heaven. So needed and so appreciated. As you will elsewhere in this issue of Open Air, there are a number of vehicles through which you can support your local public broadcasting station, KRCB. On page five, KRCB Board member Harry Rubins discusses opportunities involving IRAs. Several members have set up annuities naming KRCB as a beneficiary with their local commu-nity foundation while others have considered purchasing a life insurance policy naming the station as the beneficiary. Three times a year we mail a brochure helpful in considering and defining your own charitable intentions. The Visions mailings have helped a number of folks think these issues through. If you would like to be added to the mailing list, just let me know. Of course the simplest way to leave a gift to KRCB might well be a designation in your will. These gifts can be unrestricted or restricted; your choice of course. Restricted support might be directed towards, for example, local programming or equipment or a particular program genre. Or some donors specify that their gift should go into the KRCB endowment where the gift is invested and continues to support the station for many years into the future. Others make their gift unrestricted, know-ing that our Board and staff will put the gift to the best use at the time. Once you have considered the needs of your family and loved ones, I hope you will also consider KRCB as a trusted community partner that you would like to support for years to come. Thanks a million for all your support.Sincerely,

Further support for coastal history film project You may recall that KRCB is working with Marin County filmmakers Nancy Kelly and Kenji Yamamoto on a documentary, Moments in Time. The documentary tells the story of the creation of the Point Reyes National Seashore and the Golden Gate National Recreational Area and how a group of determined citizens, landowners, and local govern-ment officials prevented massive development along the Marin and Sonoma Coasts in the 1960s and ‘70s. In theprocess, they created a model of environmental stewardship and land management for controlled urban growth in juxtaposition with agricultural land use. Last year, we received a generous grant from the Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation in support of this project, and we have been very fortunate to receive a second grant from the Foundation, for $75,000, towards further work on the film. Visit the KRCB website for more infor-mation on the story, to see a preview, or to find out how to donate.

WATTS UP—What do additional watts look like? KRCB-FM Program Director Robins Pressman shows off the otherwise invisible gear that is mak-ing an audible difference in reception for many Radio 91 listeners.

KRCB presents Student to Citizen Film SeriesWrestling with Manhood: Boys, Bullying & Battering Wrestling with Manhood is the first educational program to pay attention to the enor-mous popularity of professional wrestling among male youth, addressing its relationship to real-life violence and probing the social values that sustain it as a powerful cultural force. Richly illustrating their analysis with numerous examples, Sut Jhally and Jackson Katz—the award-winning creators of the videos Dreamworlds and Tough Guise, respectively—offer a new way to think about the enduring problems of men’s violence against women and bully-ing in our schools. Coming November 10 – Generation M Despite the achievements of the women’s movement over the past four decades, misogyny remains a persistent force in American culture. In this important documentary, Thomas Keith, professor of philosophy at California State University-Long Beach, looks specifically at misogyny and sexism in mainstream American media.

Make IRA Charitable Contributions before Year End by Harry Rubins The provision for individuals age 70½ or older to make charitable contributions from their IRA will expire December 31, 2009. So time is running out for individuals over age 70 ½ to donate as much as $100,000 from their IRAs to charities. The distributions are tax free. In the past years these charitable distributions counted towards the tax-able Required Minimum Distributions IRA owners in this age group had to take. Congress suspended age 70½ Required Minimum Distributions for 2009 but not the charitable distribution from an IRA. For someone who is considering making a charitable contribution they can still do so with IRA funds. The distributions made directly to the charities will not be reported as income on their tax return. For those who are charitably inclined it still makes sense to do charitable contributions this way. If you have an interest in supporting KRCB with a direct transfer from your IRA please contact Nancy Dobbs at KRCB at 707-584-2002 or email at [email protected]

Waging War On Cancer with Paula ZahnCancer Pain: Easing The Agony For many of us there are few things more frightening than a diagnosis of cancer. But thanks to recent breakthroughs and new treatments millions more people today have become can-cer survivors. Unfortunately, there’s often a dark lining to the sunny statistics: cancer pain. But there is an array of options to treat pain and to give cancer survivors hope for a future free from this agony. In this program we meet survivors who have had debilitating pain and hear what they’ve done to combat it, plus we speak with experts in cancer pain and hear about pain therapies that are available to-day, and some that will be available in the future. These therapies can make a huge difference in the lives of cancer survivors around the world. Wednesday, October 7 at 8 pm

Mesothelioma: The Hidden Threat Decades ago America was building the cities of the future. But there was a danger lurking in those buildings and many others around the world: asbestos. Many of the workers exposed to the asbestos in those construction projects dozens of years ago today are being diagnosed with a devastating form of cancer called mesothelioma. In this program we examine the causes and the treatments for mesothelioma and meet patients who are doing battle with this difficult disease. Plus, we hear from the experts about treatments that are having success today and new therapies that may be available in the near future.Wednesday, October 14 at 8 pm

KRCB honors Disability Awareness monthMinds on the Edge: Facing Mental Illness This program connects the dots between personal dilemmas facing individuals and fami-lies who are living with mental illness, medical practices that can be obstacles to treatment, laws that may have unintended consequences, and public policies that all too often fall short in responding with programs that could make a positive difference. It zeros in on wrenching and confounding situations that are playing out every day in homes and hospital ERs, on city streets and school campuses, in courtrooms and in jails, as Americans struggle with the challenges of severe mental illness. Tuesday, October 6 at 9 pm

Including Samuel Photojournalist Dan Habib rarely thought about inclusion before he had his son Samuel. Now he thinks about inclusion every day. Habib’s film, Including Samuel, examines the educational and social inclusion of youth with disabilities. The film documents the Habib family’s journey as they work to include Samuel, now 9, in all facets of their lives, a journey that trans-forms each of them. Including Samuel also features four other families with varied inclusion experiences, plus interviews with teachers, parents and disability rights experts. Including Samuel is a highly personal, passion-ately photographed film that captures the cultural and

systemic barriers to inclusion.Tuesday, October 27 at 9 pm

Will they have any impact? How can they reach people outside the “environ-mental elite?” A Climate One presentation.October 29 – Who Needs Stuff Anyway? The Return Of The Mystery Theme As always, Flashback this month delves deep into the fine, often forgot-ten music of “the sixties,” this time featuring tunes from the Electric Prunes, George Harrison, the Byrds, The Mojo Men, Jethro Tull, and Elephant’s Memory (remember them?) among others. Tying it all together is an obscure but logical thematic connection that will become clear only to those who are listening Tuesday, October 6 at 7 pm.

October 5 – Joan Osborne / Henry Butler Critically-acclaimed and magnetic Joan Osborne returns to E-town with some exciting songs in this encore broad-cast. She also shares some old favorites, delivered power-fully and passionately as only she can do. And Henry Butler brings his superb and energetic New Orleans tinged piano mastery back to the stage as well.

October 12 – The Subdudes / The Roches The Subdudes share a set of their Americana roots-rock songs that features their signature three-part harmonies. Then, sisters Maggie, Terre & Suzzy—The Roches—hit the stage with the warm wit, unique lyrical style, and tight sibling harmonies they are known for.

October 19 – Bruce Hornsby / Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and pianist Bruce Hornsby is back sharing some exciting new songs with us. Then talented E-town favorite Dave Alvin brings his latest band, an all female group called The Guilty Women, who just about steal the show. Listen for Helen adding a third vocal on one of the songs; nothing like three part female harmony, wow!

October 26 – Kathy Mattea / Johnny Long Grammy winner Kathy Mattea makes her return to E-town for this 2008 road show taping from Greeley, Colorado. She draws on her West Virginia roots to deliver a compelling set of traditional and contemporary mining songs. Then Johnny Long, the “Bluesman” with a capital B, takes the stage and shows us why, in the words of John Hammond, Johnny is an artist “worthy of international attention.”Mondays at 7 pm

Americana expands on Thursday nights Bill Frater has held down Thursday nights on KRCB for many years with his Freight Train Boogie. Having recently retired from his gig at the post office, Bill now plans to hit the road a bit to celebrate his new freedom from the daily grind. That has opened the way for frequent substitute host, Linda Seabright to become a regular part of the mix, now alternating Thursday nights with On The Road Again, featuring her own brand of Americana and beyond. Linda is happy to join the talented and committed roster of programmers at KRCB. She is also a film and voiceover actress and a music journalist who loves researching anything to do with Americana and southern soul. Linda has interviewed many well-known artists includ-ing Elvis Costello, Duke Robillard and Allen Toussaint, and is a regular traveler to the New Orleans music scene. She welcomes listener emails at [email protected].

KRCB Volunteer of the Month Jim Lavaroni is one of KRCB-FM’s many volunteer radio hosts who contribute their knowledge and love of music to our station. Without them we wouldn’t have the variety of music programming that our listeners enjoy, from live Santa Rosa Symphony performances to impromptu drumming sessions on Jim’s show, Percussion Discussion, which is broadcast live at 10 pm on the second and fourth Thurs-days of every month. In addition to “discussin’ the percussion,” Jim’s show features surprise guests, such as Raul Rico of Santana and recently the electro-acoustic Indian alternative rock of Beautiful Losers. It may surprise some listeners to learn that Jim is a 30-year veteran of the Novato Police force, but he sees a logical connection between serving as a Police Lieutenant and hosting a radio show: both involve serving people. Jim always found a way to incorpo-rate his interest in communications, from making training videos for the police force to radio broadcasting—first at KUSF and now at KRCB. When he isn’t hosting Percussion Discussion or volunteering elsewhere in the commu-nity, Jim is probably drumming in one of two bands: Wall of Rhythm or Heartlanguage (see www.heartlanguagemusic.com for more about Jim and the music he loves). Thank you, Jim, for serving our community by applying your skills and talent in ways that are as unique as they are meaningful and valuable. Keep up the beat!

The frost is on the pumpkin….

As we begin to prepare for the coming winter months, I remind our members that KRCB is not a commercial enterprise. When you tune in to KRCB television and KRCB radio you will not find five or ten minute interruptions in the programming while someone attempts to sell you some-thing. What you will find is information about upcoming programs, occasional announcements about local community events and plenty of thanks for your support. This is what is so unique about Public Broadcasting; this is why it’s called “non-commercial”. The model for Public Broadcasting has always been to engage, encourage and welcome the participation and the support of the “public” in what we do. And that is why KRCB looks to you for financial support, keep KRCB commercial free, with your continued support today.

Time for renewal, contact our membership department at 707-584-2018.

This film reveals the surprising history of the women who made such a law necessary and profiles two female matadors currently in the arena: the acclaimed Mari Paz Vega and neophyte Eva Florencia. writers. Refusing to testify be-fore the HUAC in ’47, he was part of the group known as the

Hollywood Ten; convicted for contempt, he spent 11 months in federal prison and lost all right to ply his craft. Writing 30 scripts under pseudonyms —he won an Oscar in ’56 for The Brave One as Robert Reich—he was not recognized publicly again until 1960, when Otto Preminger credited him on Exodus and Kirk Doug-las did so on Spartacus—

Pearson & Co. “Stick with what works” could be the unofficial motto for Pearson & Co., the 13-year old Santa Rosa deli and catering company. When current owner Kendra McCoy took over the business from founders Karen and Larry Person in 1999, it was on the condition that the staff stay on, she recalled recently. “I liked to eat, but I’d never cooked commercial-ly,” the former marketing manager explained. “They actually taught me for a long time.” What has changed is the public profile of the company. From the original, expanded and still active location on Fourth Street (next to Safeway), McCoy has opened three additional sites, two within the new Kaiser campus on Old Redwood Highway north of Fountaingrove, and the third on Mendocino Avenue at Chanate. But through this growth, the menu at Pearson & Co still features many of the signature dishes that have been there from the beginning, hearty and satisfying staples like meatloaf and lasagna. Other items vary as new chefs contribute their specialties, and there are seasonal changes about three times a year to reflect the availability of local produce. Pearson & Co has also stuck with KRCB down through the years, providing delicious food for meetings, auc-tion crews, special events and other occasions. It’s a partnership that works for everyone, and we’re delighted to it going, too.Pearson & Co.Fourth Street near Farmer’s Lane l Mendocino at Chanate(707) 541-3868 l www.pearsonandco.com
