Finding Resultant Forces

A force of 3 N and 4 N are perpendicular to each other. What is the resultant force?
Use 2 methods
1. Scale diagram 2. Pythagoras.
What is the angle between the resultant force and the 3N force? What is the angle between the 4 N force and the Resultant Force?

A Swimmer is travelling at a velocity of 2.0 ms-1 at right angles to a river bank. The velocity of the river water is 3.5 ms-1. Calculate
a) the magnitude of the velocity of the swimmer. b) the angle between the river bank and the direction of the velocity of the swimmer.

Three forces each of 6 N, can be applied together at any angles.
• Sketch the arrangement that gives the largest resultant force and say how large it is.
• Sketch the arrangement that gives the smallest resultant force and say how large it is.
• How could they be arranged to give a resultant force of 6N?
