Subject: OCR Nationals in Creative iMedia

Curriculum Intent (Covering Year 9 to 11)

The aim of the Creative iMedia curriculum is for all students to feel empowered by what they study, developing both written and research

skills as well as the use of digital software such as Dreamweaver (to create website), Fireworks (to create graphics), Windows Movie

Maker (to create movies) and Audacity (to edit sound). It will develop young people who are digitally literate, resilient and have problem

solving skills. Students will be also develop transferable skills to use across the curriculum and in the wider world context.

A successful student will develop research skills and also be able to create a media product based on the demands of a client’s brief. At

The Appleton School an iMedia student will develop skills that will be relevant in the media industry and will also be useful in other fields

of employment. Students will be able to manipulate complex computer software and work independently to complete a media task to a

set brief.

Students Vision

to develop your media skills and knowledge as potential future media developers

to provide you with a key understanding of media terminology, concepts, objectives

to allow you to explore real life media projects and scenarios (through assignments from the exam boards)

to provide you with an insight future career paths. to compliment your employability skills

to prepare you for the everyday life of working with or developing your own media products.

What are your aims linked to the curriculum (National Curriculum and Specification criteria)

The vision and aims of the iMedia qualification at the Appleton School has been influenced by the Purpose and Aims of the National Curriculum (DfE 2013)

and the OCR Specifications that we follow at GCSE Level, which highlight areas that we feel particularly important in the 21st Century.

How is the curriculum delivered?

The iMedia qualification is divided into four units, two of which are compulsory and two are selected for range of optional units. (Depending on

the strength of the teaching staff we would save ourselves a lot of work is we all did the same topics and trained staff to deliver them. Cab we

discuss this please). All students will start with compulsory units before they move on to optional further units. If students are completing the

qualification in one year (i.e. fat course), all four units are delivered in the same year where two units are completed in term 1 and the remaining

two units are completed in term 2 and 3. Students will take their exam for R081in January series and re-sit the exam in June series. Where

students are completing the qualification over three years, students will complete one of the units (Theory unit: R081) in the first year. They will

sit their exam for Unit R081 in June series and re-sit the exam in the following academic year in January series. In the second year students will

complete one of the optional unit R085 as well as re-sit the exam if necessary. In the third year students will complete the final compulsory unit R082 as well as one more optional unit R091.

This is explained in greater depth in our scheme of work. The curriculum has been developed so that skills and knowledge are revisited

continuously throughout Key Stage four until external examinations are completed and the students are fully prepared for their next steps in

their education.

How is the curriculum assessed?

Assessments are completed at the end of the delivery of each theory section where students key knowledge and skills that have been developed

through the topics area are assessed through the completion of an end of section assessment. All of the assessment data is collected on a

departmental mark book and individualised teachers’ data tracking system and will inform future teaching and learning. As well as these end of

topic assessments, we also have feedback and mini assessments where students are given feedback on how to develop specific knowledge or

skills and required to then respond by working on the question again or an extended stretch and challenge question. At key points throughout

the academic year (determined by the school) mock examinations will take place. These examinations will test knowledge and skills across

modules and assessed using examination mark schemes and grade boundaries (KS4). This data is recorded on the central school system (SIMS).

How is the curriculum enriched (through speakers/visits/clubs) to generate a love of learning?

The curriculum is enriched predominately through the application of real life links to Media. Students are encouraged to keep up with the news

and teachers are expected to bring real life media examples into their lesson delivery. External speakers or visits are being currently planned to

Page 4: OCR Nationals in Creative iMedia

provide students with an insight into how media projects are handle in the real life scenarios. External visits to theme parks takes place, so that

student can attend lectures and experience on how theme parks create their graphics and website for marketing purpose. We have a business

and enterprise department that focuses on running carers talks for students who are interested in Media.

What skills and knowledge do students bring with them from Key Stage 3 to Year 9?

Student’s first exposure to the media skills in year 8, where they complete range of units that prepares them for iMedia qualification such as

Audacity ( term 1) Graphics ( term 2) , HTML (term 3), and therefore they have some basic skills and knowledge that they can bring with them

into year 9. Key concepts and terminology are introduced to the students in KS3 where possible and relevant regarding the media related

software. The skills bring to Year 9 are:

Name the major Acts concerning computer use – Computer Misuse Act, Data Protection Act and GDPR, Copyright Law, Health and Safety

Skills in design, photo-editing and image manipulation to create graphics for a given audience and purpose

Binary – data representation of sound

Skills in sound editing, mixing and sound manipulation to create a radio advert / podcast for a given audience and purpose

How sound effects are created

Describe the Internet and the World Wide Web and the difference between them

Communication over networks and security of communications – encryption

Investigating business opportunities, location, markets, competitors using the World Wide Web

Design and create a questionnaire to collect information and process / analyse results

preparation techniques. Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding on pre-production skills and techniques used in the sector, as

well as gain the knowledge and skills to create digital media products and explore their application.

What skills and knowledge do students develop in Year 10?

Within year 10, students will cover unit R085: Designing a Website, within the OCR course. This unit builds on units R081: Pre-Production Skills

and students will be able to apply skills, knowledge and understanding gained in those unit, i.e. produce pre-production documents such as mind-

maps, time plan, etc. Multipage websites are the basis of internet content and are therefore used extensively in the creative digital media sector,

whether for mobile phones or computers in all their forms. This unit will enable students to understand the basics of creating multipage websites.

It will enable students to demonstrate their creativity by combining components to create a functional, intuitive and aesthetically pleasing website.

It will allow learners to interpret a client brief and to use planning and preparation techniques when developing a multipage website. On

completion of this unit, students will be able to explore and understand the different properties, purposes and features of multipage websites,

plan and create a multipage website and review and evaluate the final website against a specific brief.

What skills and knowledge do students develop in Year 11?

Within year 11, students will cover units R082 Designing a Graphic and Unit R09: Desigining a Game Concept, within the OCR iMedia course.

The unit R082, Digital graphics feature in many areas of our lives, and play a very important part in today’s world. The digital media sector relies

heavily on these visual stimulants within products to communicate messages effectively. The aim of this unit is for students to understand the

basics of digital graphics editing for the creative and digital media sector. This unit builds on Unit R08: Pre-Production Skills.

Unit R091 Designing a game concept, builds on units R081: Pre-Production Skills and students will be able to apply the skills, knowledge and

understanding gained in those units. This unit will enable students to understand the capabilities and limitations of a range of platforms. They will

be able to identify core features of digital games and gain the knowledge to create a games design concept proposal that can be presented to a

client for critical review. This unit will also enable students to understand the basics of planning and designing digital games for the creative digital

media sector. On completion of this unit, students will know about different types of digital games and where they are used, be able to plan and

design a digital game concept and present a game proposal to a client or focus group.

Students in Yr. 9 will start with the compulsory unit R081: Pre-production document allowing them to prepare for the skills they require for the

remaining three units. It also gives them the opportunity to re-sit the exam the following year if they have failed to perform well against their

target grades.

In Yr. 10, students will be focusing on the unit R085: Creating Website unit. This unit is easier than any other practical units. It is creative and

students relates to the unit (i.e. creating the website) more easily. After the theory unit R081: Pre-Production Skills, it is important to select and deliver the unit that will help students to continue with the course with enthusiasm and motivation. Towards the end of Yr. 10, students are

introduced to their third unit R082: Creating Graphics. This requires them to learn a little bit more challenging skills using Fireworks software.

By this time, students are bit more matured enough to learn the complex skills required.

Finally in Yr 11, students are introduced to their last practical unit R091: Designing a Game proposal. This unit has been introduce last as students

really need to be more creative and more matured to design and present their game ideas. This units need lots of background research and

needs students to think more creatively than any other unit. They need to produce designs and game proposals in detail which they would be

able to do better in Yr. 11.

As this is one year course, students will be introduced to both the compulsory units R081 and R082 at the same time. This allows students to

sit their first exam in January for unit R081: Pre-Production skills and if necessary re-sit the exam towards the end of the academic year in June

series. It will also allow students to ensure they have all the necessary skills of producing pre-production documents for the remaining three

units.

What cross-curricular themes have been identified? The main cross curricular links that are present throughout this course are English, Mathematics and IT. A number of written skills are required throughout

the course when answering exam questions and quantitative skills are included through calculations and interpretations of data. There are topic areas

throughout the qualification that have heavy focus on IT skills such as using Microsoft office packages, Internet, etc.
