INTRODUCTIONThis is a guide for teachers so that you can see how we would mark work, Cambridge Nationals are designed to give the learners the project and let them create the work.

The guide contains sample learner work for this unit and covers all learning objectives, graded at Marking Band 1 (MB1) and Marking Band 3 (MB3).

The accompanying commentary explains why each piece of work was awarded its grade.

For MB1 graded work, additional guidance has been added to suggest improvements that could be made to make it an MB2 graded piece of work.

For MB3 graded work, additional guidance has been added to explain why it was awarded that grade and not the lower grade of MB2.

Legislation

When I make my website I need to consider some of the legal issues related to creating websites.Copyright is something I need to be aware of when I am using images and information which I didn’t make myself on my website. Most things that have been created by someone else are protected by copyright. This includes books, song, videos and picture. This means that if I use any of these assets I need to record the sources of the assets and if I publish my work I would have to contact the author or creator of the asset and ask their permission to use their work. They may or may not agree and they may charge a fee or put some restrictions on how I can use the asset. If I broke copyright law I could be prosecuted. I also need to be aware of trademarks; these are used to allow companies to protect their brands. I would have to ask permission if I wanted to use an asset in my work that was protected by a trademark. This means that if a company did not want to be associated with my work and the product I am advertising they might not give me permission to use their trademark.

Marking commentary on MB1 sample learner workThe work demonstrates an interpretation of the brief that meets some requirements and a narrow identification of the target audience. There is a brief work plan which outlines some key points in the process and some timing. The work plan, legislation information and mind map show some skills from other units. There are a few assets and resources planned but evidence of the understanding of their use in the project is minimal. A test plan has been created which would test some elements of functionality.

Suggested improvements to progress sample learner work to MB2To reach mark band 2 the work would need to include a more detailed interpretation of the brief and target audience. It could also be improved by a more detailed work plan that included some planned resources and milestones. The understanding of the use of the assets and resources could also be demonstrated in more detail and the test plan could include more detailed testing of functionality and record expected outcomes.

Saving and Exporting - Files and folder

Here are the screen shots showing my exported work and the files and folders I used for my project.

Marking commentary on MB1 sample learner workSome appropriate assets have been used in the product and a basic master page utilised. There is evidence of some standard techniques being used to create the website. The website has a basic navigation structure that works to an extent but some links are broken. The file names used are generally appropriate but there is little evidence of a folder structure. Content on the site is limited which reduced the ability of website to meet the brief.

Suggested improvements to progress sample learner work to MB2The work could be improved by the creating a fully working navigation system and the creation of some more meaningful content being added to the website. Evidence of a clear folder structure and file names would also improve the work. Demonstration of some more advance web design skills to accompany those evidenced here would put the work in MB2.

SAMPLE LEARNER WORK

ReviewI think the website meets the client requirements well. I have included some images that I think go well with the theme of the website and meet the brief. I have also included the price of the tickets as the brief said. I have created a website which has 5 pages as the brief said. The pages are linked together using hyperlinks and most of the links work. I found some images to show what the acts looked like and I tried to link these to the acts websites but I couldn’t get the links to work so I had to leave this bit. I enjoyed creating the website but I found it difficult. I think the information on the website could have been more detailed to help it fit the brief better, as at the moment it doesn’t really provide much information about the event.

To improve my work further I would like to have had time to complete the links to my pages so that they functioned correctly. I would also like to have created much more text information which told the visitor all about the different features of the festival to help them sell more tickets which was the purpose of the website. I would also try to make the layout of the pages a bit more professional, the table layout I used helped me to make the structure but it didn’t make the website look very professional.

The design choices that have been made could be explained with reference to whether or not they helped the product meet the brief and the reasons behind the suggested improvements could be explained.

Websites - purposes and features

The purpose of this website is to provide shoppers with information about the retailer Morrisons. The website provides information on all the different product ranges available, as well as information on the latest offers available. It provides a search function and the opportunity to find out where your local store is, and find out the opening times for that store. If you login to the website you can also complete an online shop and arrange for the shopping to be delivered to your home at a convenient time.

This website uses a range of different features to allow it to provide all the functions and services required by the customer.

1. The search facility – this allows the users to search for a particular product within the stores website, this is a vital tool for a website such as this where there will be information on 1000s of products stored within the pages of the site. The aim of online shopping is to provide convenience for customers if they cannot find the products they need it would not be fulfilling this purpose.

2. The website contains the company logo and house style of the company throughout. This is vital to ensure that the website is always recognisable as part of the Morrisons brand, as customers look for brands they recognise and have more trust in website that appear to be professionally finished.

3. The prominent feature on this page is the scrolling banner of images across the centre of the page. This features bold colours and graphics to draw the user’s eye to the money saving offers in an attempt to encourage viewers to purchase from their store.

4. The Morrisons website has a series of navigation bars which allow the user to move around different areas of the website with ease. This website provides two horizontal navigation bars one which is in the style of table which take you to different parts of the website, sorted by product ranges for example Morrisons Cellar or kids & baby and more, this is positioned at the very top of the page. Further down the page there is a navigation bar which has main categories such as home, browse shop, favourites, offers, new and seasonal, which makes it easier for the shopper to locate products they wish to buy.

5. Below the offers banner there are 4 large static graphics which work as buttons to take the user to 4 specific services the retailer offers, match and more, £1 delivery slots, import your favourites and shop online today. The design of these buttons is very bold; they are clearly features that the retailer wants to draw to the users attention.

6. The website also has a footer containing a range of much smaller links to information. The information here whilst still important tends to link more to the company as a whole rather than the websites primary function of online shopping. For example there are links here to things like contact us, terms of use and FAQ’s. This section and its positioning on the site is fairly standard, users would probably expect to find this type of information in this position on most professional websites.

Education http://www.smart-kit.com/

The purpose of this website is to provide fun and educational games and puzzles for children. The website provides links to a wide range of different games and puzzles which children can try. It also provides assurance to parents and teachers that all the content that is available on the site is suitable. There are graphical icon links to the games as well as the option to search via category of game or puzzle.

This website has a variety of features which allow it to function in an effective way to provide the users with

everything they need from the website.

1. The website uses a bold colour scheme and logo to identity the website and to make it engaging to children. The logo also has a tag line `School-safe Puzzle Games’ which give a clear indication to the users of the aim of this particular website.

2. The website provides a clear navigation bar across the top of the homepage which allows the user to select which type of game or puzzle they are looking for and navigate directly to this page, this is create in clear contrasting colours which standout from the colour scheme of the rest of the page.

3. The page is divided up using columns of different icons which is an effective design technique to allow the user to clearly see the categories that are available. This is done with a minimum amount of text information which allow the site to be more accessible to those who maybe don’t read very well or would be put off by large sections of text information.

4. The website also has a rollover technique on the icons which means that when the mouse is rolled over a particular game icon a speech bubble appears which contains a brief outline of the game. This is helpful particularly to new users so they can see what sort of game or puzzle it is before they go to it.

5. There is a foot at the bottom of the page which provides the user with some key information about the website and some small links to other pages such as contact and about. This is a fairly standard place for this information to be found. In this case this information is likely to be most relevant to adults visiting the site rather than the sites child based target audience so it makes sense to locate these items in a conventional place where adults could locate them but where they don’t spoil the game experience for the users.

6. This site uses white space well, there are some clear sections of information and interaction but this is all well-spaced out and the use of white space means the page does not feel cluttered of too full.

Information http://scouts.org.uk/home/

The purpose of this website is to provide information about the Scout Association to existing volunteers and children but also to people who might want to join or need more information about the Scout Association.

The website contains a range of different features to allow users to access the information on the website.

1. At the top of the page there are a number of buttons which provide different functions. To increase accessibility on the site there is a button to increase the text size on the site, there is a donate button for fundraising and there are links to the social network sites Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest. These links allow users to link their web browsing to their social networking pages. This feature should be particularly appealing to the children and young adults who may access the site.

2. Also at the top of the page is a search bar to allow people to search for specific information on the site. This is a fairly typical place to find such a feature; following this design convention will allow more people to locate this function easily.

3. The whole website has a strong house style with the logo in the top left hand corner of the page and the purple and green colour scheme which is used throughout the site. This gives the site an eye catching effect and professional appearance which gives people confidence in the information provided.

4. The site also has a horizontal navigation bar which provides links to some main sections of information such as `What We Do’, `Join Today’ and `Events’. There is also a link to return to the home page.

5. The information in the body of the page is split into article type boxes which each provide some information on a topic which is in effect an introduction, then you can click on that section to take you to the full article. This technique is quite common on news websites where they want to showcase all the information they have available but not provide all the extended information on the homepage. To make the articles look more exciting many of them are accompanied by a small image which links to the information.

6. At the bottom of the page there is a horizontal menu which provides the logos of Scout Associations partners, each logo is a link which the user can click on.

7. At the bottom on the page is a footer with a lot of text links to various pages such as About, Jobs, Privacy Policy etc. This follows the convention of all the sites I have looked at in this project and most others. Users looking for this more business like information would know to look here for this information which is why it is quite discrete and subtly styled.

8. Another typical design feature for websites which is well demonstrated here is the use of white space. In this design it serves to make the design look quite clean and professional. It also has a functional purpose of allowing the page to be viewed on smaller screens such as mobile phones or tablets without having to scroll horizontally as all the information is in the centre of the design.

Devices used to access websites and Internet connection methods.

PC A PC is a desktop computer which requires connection to a power source to operate. The computer itself is separate to the peripheral devices it needs to be operated such as a monitor, mouse and keyboard. You can access the internet on a PC by either using a wired connection to the internet via a local area network (LAN) which then connects you to the internet via a router or modem. Alternatively you can use a wireless connection which uses a router to connect you to the internet. Once connected to the internet you would need a browser on the computer to enable you to search for and access websites.

Laptop A laptop is a portable computer which as well as the main computer has an integrated screen and keyboard, it usually also contains an integrated track pad in place of a mouse. A laptop has an internal battery so it does not always need to be connected to a power source to work but it will need to be connected to charge the battery. Like a PC, a laptop can connect to the internet using a wired connection, however it is usually connected using a WiFi to connect to the Local Area Network (LAN). WiFi connections are not always as reliable as wired connections but would still be able to connect to the internet to allow the user to view webpages.

Tablets Tablets are a computer which uses a touch screen in place of the keyboard and the mouse. All the peripherals required are integrated into the unit. Tablets also do not need a wired power source to work, though they will need to be charged up to work. Tablets connect to the internet in much the same way as a laptop. They do not generally have the function to connect to the internet via a wired connection so rely on WiFi to make the connection. Some tablets also have the option of using cellular internet which works in the same way as mobile internet outlined below.

Mobile phones Similar to a tablet in function all the features of the mobile phone are built into the unit, allowing you to access webpages using either a touch screen or the keypad buttons on the phone. Mobile phones can use either the mobile network or WiFi to connection to the internet. Using mobile internet requires the mobile phone to locate a mobile signal, and then the mobile connects via the mobile phone to the tower transmitting the signal. The data for this connection is encrypted and travel to the phone using the mobile signal. This is the least reliable of the internet connections, however, as the technology for mobile phones increases so does the reliability of the connections provided. When using a mobile phone to view webpages some websites automatically direct you to a mobile version of their website which is usually a more minimal version of the site which allows the whole page to be viewed on the screen without a lot of scrolling.

Games Consoles

It is now also possible to access the internet using a games console such as Playstation and Xbox. These products now have the ability to connect to the internet using a wired connection as discussed above for PC internet connection. The can also use a WiFi connection similar to that of a laptop. The connection speed for a game console would need to have a good date transfer speed because in order to use the games effectively online a lot of data needs to be transferred quickly or the game will lag behind the user commands. Due to this a mobile internet connection would not be suitable for a games console.

Digital Televisions

Certain types of television can be connected to the internet too. These types of television will allow you to access the internet in conventional ways such as using web browsers, they will most likely also come equipped with built in facilities that allow the user to stream content from the internet such as television programs or films. The televisions can use either a wired internet connection via a router or modem or a wireless connection. As with the games console the internet speed needs to be good to allow the data required to watch video content in real time to be streamed fast enough. There also needs to be a consistent link to the internet for streaming so the unreliability of a mobile internet connection would not be suitable. It would also require more data to be transferred than most mobile internet providers would allow on a standard package.

SAMPLE LEARNER WORK

Client BriefMy client is the local tourist information service. They have asked me to create a website to encourage more teenagers to visit local attractions and spend more time locally rather than travelling further afield. The tourist board want to promote what the local area has to offer in terms of attractions and facilities.

To meet the brief I need to create a website with at least 5 pages. The website needs to have a clear and consistent house style which can be seen throughout the pages. The website should contain different types of media such as images, text information and any other media features that would be needed to complete the product.

Target AudienceThe audience for my product will be teenagers who live in the local area. Teenagers are now travelling further afield to find entertainment and socialise. To engage with the target audience I am going to need to consider what things they might like to be able to do in the local area and tap into any interest they might have. I will try to make the product appealing to the teenage target audience by making it bold in design with bright engaging colours. I will try not to include too much text on the website as this is unlikely to engage the audience.

As the audience are teenagers there is a higher likelihood that they will be viewing the webpage on a mobile phone or tablet which has a smaller screen so having less text and more images would make it better suited to this platform. Though there is also the consideration that videos and sound would be harder to stream on mobile internet. When thinking about the attractions and facilities I will promote I need to think about the amount of money the teenage target audience would have to spend and advertise the activities that they will be able to afford doing. The audience could be either male or female as the brief does not specify the gender of the target audience so I will need to make sure there is information that is suitable for everyone and includes a broad range of potential interests.

LegislationWhen thinking about the legal issues that I might need to consider when creating this product there are a few key points I need to consider.

Copyright When a piece of work is created it is protected by copyright. Copyright applies to many different types of work such as books; photos; music; drama and computer software. If you copy or share a piece of work that is protected by copyright without being granted the correct permissions to do so then you would be breaking the law and you could be prosecuted. To help avoid copyright infringement there is a symbol to show that a piece of work is protected by copyright, it is a © symbol, but any piece of work is protected by copyright even if it the symbol is not shown, I need to bear this in mind when completing my website.

To make sure that I do not break copyright law when I create my website I will need to make sure that if I am using assets that are protected by copyright that I take all the steps needed to ensure I am not in breach of this legislation. To do this I would need to request permission from the copyright owner to use their work and work within any restrictions they may put on the use of their material such as what purpose I can use if for or whether my work will be published on distributed. The copyright owner may request a fee for the use of their work which I would need to pay and I would need to acknowledge the source of any material I used.

Though if I were to create my own assets for this assignment they too would be protected by the copyright legislation I have discussed here. For my website project I intend to create my own assets and images, this will allow me greater freedom to create the exact assets I would like but I will also mean that I do not have to request permission to use them, pay a fee or be restricted but any conditions put in place by the creator of the work.

Photograph creationIf I am going to take photographs to use on my website there are some legal issues that I need to consider.

Location: If I want to take photos on private land then I would need to ask the permission on the land owner to allow access to the property. I can take photos in a public place providing I am not taking pictures of something which is protected by copyright such as a painting.

Subject: If you are taking photographs of people to avoid any legal issues it is sensible to get model consent from the subject of the photograph. This can be done using a model consent form. This records the subject’s permission for you to photograph them and usually states what you want to use the photographs for and if any fee has been paid for the subject to be photographed.

TrademarksTrademarks allow someone to protect a brand, for example O2 or Subway. If something is a registered trademark it is usually marked by the ® symbol. Trademark protection is not automatic you have to register for it. If you register a trade mark you are then able to take legal action against someone who the trademark without permission, you are also able to sell the trademark or allow people to use it on license which means they are granted permission to use the trademark in a certain way, often there will be a fee attached to the license. This allows companies to ensure that their brand is only linked with things that fit with their corporate image and are not going to be damaging to their own brand by association.

When creating my website I need to make sure I do not use any trademarks that are registered to anyone else. This should not be too much of a problem for the task I am completing as I intend to make the branding and house style myself to ensure that it fits the house style and image I am planning to use on the website.

ReviewThe brief of this project was quite detailed so it was a challenge to keep to all the criteria set. I think the website that I have created meets most of the criteria outlined in the brief well. The client asked me to create a website for teenagers. With that in mind I decided to make the colour scheme for my website, very bold and bright and avoid the use of pastel colours. My colour scheme is black and white with the accent colour of bright pink. The brief also required the website to have at least 5 pages, this was a simple part of the criteria and I have achieved this in full. The navigation on the page is effective and includes both internal and external links which all work correctly. I particularly like the rollover buttons, as they are a nice design feature which makes the site stand out a bit and look at bit more interesting.

The use of images on the website has added a lot more interest to the pages and because I have used photographs they link to the actual locations discussed on the pages. They also make the site look more grown up than it would have done if I had used picture graphics rather than photographs; this has helped me fulfil the brief of catering for a teenage target audience.

There were some elements of the project that didn’t work as well as I would have liked them to. One of these things was the consistency of the page. I used a table to try and regulate the layout of the pages and I used a master page to keep the design consistent. Whilst the design elements such as buttons, logos and colour schemes are consistent, there is some variation in the layout of the pages which occurred when I added the content to the table structure on the individual pages. As the content for each page is not consistent this has skewed the layout a bit which I was disappointed about. To improve the website further I could set up the properties of the table to restrict the column and row dimensions so that they do not move in relation to the content, this would make the page layout of the website more consistent.

Whilst I have reflected that the photograph element of the website worked well this was not without its issues I had particular difficulty with the Selby Abbey photograph in terms of creating a consistent design. I set the dimensions of the images to fit the layout and so they appear consistent, but I could not do this in the same way with the Selby Abbey image as when it was used in the dimensions set it just didn’t look right, the quite narrow tall building looked misshaped and this spoilt the effect of the image. So I had to resize this image to different dimensions to the other, I tried to compromise and keep it as close to the others as I could be but without compromising the quality of the image too much but this did have a negative impact on the consistency on the layout for this page. If I had had more time to improve the website further I would have spent more time editing the image to try and make it fit the page better, or consider the page plan more when I was taking the photographs and used a landscape rather than a portrait image.

With hindsight I think that the website could be further improved by the addition of some different types of media for example video of the classes at the leisure centre or music from the concerts at Selby Abbey. I think this would have helped my website fulfil the client brief better as it would have provided more information on Selby in a different more unusual way.

I think I managed to find a range of different activities and facilities that promoted Selby in a positive way as required by the client brief, it was difficult to gauge which facilities and activities would appeal to the teenagers of Selby but I tried to collect up diverse ideas that could appeal to anyone. If I had more time to further improve the website I would like to have explored more potential activities I could have promoted.

I have chosen a bold blocky font for the text on the website, which was designed to be clear to users on all different types of device as I identified this was a key part of the target audience requirements and designed my text accordingly. This works well for the body text on the website pages but for the larger text such as the headings and the buttons it appears to be a little pixelated and graining. This doesn’t give the professional appearance to the website. If I had the opportunity to improve the website further I would look for a more bold text with sharp edges, which would give the text appearance a little more of a modern look. A font like Aharoni or something similar to this would perhaps be a better fit for the website design.
