A house in the sunWhen considering a new life in Spain the main

consideration for most people is the roof over their head, and of course the cost of that roof has dropped dramatically in recent times. So do you need to be wealthy in order to abandon life in your home country and start afresh in Spain? The answer of course is no, anyone can do it and there are some great offers out there designed to attract you into a new life in the sun. It is no secret that the property markets on a worldwide basis are in a slump and Spain is no different, but to some, this is just the set of circumstances they need to make the move from the UK. es el techo sobre la cabeza, Y por supuesto el coste de ese techo ha caído drásticamente en los últimos tiempos. Así que ¿necesita usted ser rico para abandonar la vida en su patria y volver a empezar en España? La respuesta por supuesto es no, cualquiera lo puede hacer y hay algunas grandes ofertas aquí diseñadas para atraerle a una nueva vida en el sol. No es un secreto que los mercados inmobiliarios en una base mundial están en una brusca disminución y España no es diferente, pero para algunos, es esto justamente el conjunto de circunstancias que necesitan para hacer la mudanza desde Reino Unido. Las hipotecas seguras son difíciles de conseguir y los bancos pueden no estar cooperando con los fondos del gobierno que han recibido pero no permita que eso le disuada. Ha bajado la guardia; todas las cosas que odia de su vida y las circunstancias al volver a casa son repentina y dolorosamente aumentadas por la vida perfecta que usted podría llevar en el extranjero. escape route or way out.On the other hand there is the pull to arrive in a new sunny place and start a new life: - better weather, lower taxes, lower crime, a slower pace, lower cost of living, better schools, good health care and generally a better quality of life. It appears many wage slaves saddled with an omnipresent sense of “so much more of life’s millstone to tread”, ahead of them in Britain, view a life in the sun with rose tinted glasses. This rose tinted view is encouraged and enhanced by the polar opposites of what people want to escape from and what they believe they are escaping to. This is to ignore the perceived wisdom, that when you live and work in a place where you’ve previously holidayed, the place you thought you knew and understood as a tourist, is often very different as a resident. This is to state the obvious, but often an overlooked fact, that living and working abroad is a whole different circumstance from vacationing, down timing and chilling. Having said that, with rose tinted specs firmly in place, I left the UK nearly 8 years ago with my family in tow and we settled in a delightful townhouse along the coast in Torre Del Mar. The children started school here and I started work on my first book. Several years on and although the rose tinted specs have darkened a little to a more realistic shade, I do not regret the move at all. design magazines and pinpoint what you like and don’t like in the kitchens you see. Consider the kitchens in the homes of your friends, what do you like or dislike about theirs? Again this is no more than just gathering ideas and getting a feel for what you want.Having established a basic idea of your needs it is now time to visit the specialists, who will offer their advice on layout and product selection. Many designers talk about zones (the preparation zone, the cooking zone, and the wet zone), or about the Kitchen Triangle (sink, cooker and fridge). These are good guidelines when creating a layout but an experienced designer will know when to follow them and when to depart from them in order to deliver your ideal kitchen. Your chosen specialist will be able to offer a good mix of creative and functional ideas. Check the quality of every item that is specified. Ask about the quality of units. Are they made specifically to meet your order or are they in stock? Do the cabinets have full height backs to avoid dust collection? Are the carcasses colour co-ordinated on the inside to match the outside and do you have a preference? What

weights can the drawers carry and do you need full extension to give you unrestricted access? Ask about the materials the units and doors are made of. What guarantees does the supplier offer and what does this cover? The point is you should not be afraid to ask and to get down to detail before making your final selection of units, tops, and accessories. Remember, these guys are the specialists and are doing this all day long, they know the answers to all of your questions and they want you to be happy with your finished kitchen. In terms of style almost anything goes although like most other things, kitchens can be subject to fashion. Be careful here though because a good kitchen will last a very long time, longer than any fashion trend that is for sure, so put your own style before those dictated by fashion, it will stand you in good stead in the long run. Few of us will refit more than a handful of kitchens in our lifetime, so when we do go for it, it must be right. You spend too much time in the kitchen to be complacent about it. Nowhere is the old adage ‘proper preparation prevents poor performance’ more pertinent. possible for those of us of larger proportions to dip their toe in the water! Minimize the stripes and concentrate on

nautical details and seafaring-themed accessories instead. Perhaps consider an anchor necklace, a rope belt, a sailor’s barrel bag or some wedge espadrilles. The odd nautical logo or emblem on a blouse, shirt or jacket will also emphasis the theme.There are also some accessory rules for wearing nautical well. Don’t go overboard with the bling. Keep jewellery simple – a plain gold chain or some anchor drop earrings, or a rope bracelet or fine necklace decorated with delicate sea-faring charms.A cool bag always helps and this season handbag designers have really jumped onboard with striped totes, oversized sailor duffle bags and navy and white clutches.Shoes have also been given a nautical twist with anchor and stripe prints in white and navy or cork heels. If you want to liven up your outfit, then cruise on down to your local store and buy a heart-stopping pair of red shoes and matching handbag. Deck shoes are having a moment for Summer 2009, these cool and slightly preppy styles are replacing classic ballet flats.Belts are awash with nautical buckles and navy’s and red’s are great colours to pep up an outfit with a nautical twist.

Finally, don’t forget some oversized navy, red or white shades to complete your ensemble and give you that celebrity air.So there it is, the nautical theme for the season and whether you like it or loathe it, the nautical look is set to be a major trend this summer. Commercial high-street stores have all jumped aboard the trend and many glossy women’s magazines have made a splash by featuring a huge variety of nautical variations, suggesting that “If you work only one trend... make it nautical.” This, on the whole, is sound advice as navy stripes and cotton-whites are classic fashion staples which will return again and again. So sail on down to the shopping center and pick up your new nautical look for this season. And now for the gentlemen:The key to dressing well, as far as men are concerned anyway, is to stick to the classics. The basic wardrobe staples of the nice suit, blazer, white shirt, polo shirt, good pair of jeans, linen slacks and a pair of casual loafers should be updated with a few modern pieces each season, adding some stylish hats, belts, scarves and sunglasses, in the colours and styles of the season. The summer staple in suits is cotton Khaki. Cool and chic yet with a hint of casual. A good summer suit will take you from boardroom to bar or desk to dinner. to keep it masculine.Another common thread is the current craze for printed tee shirts. Express yourself in style with a slogan or edgy print, to show off your mood. Unleash the rebel rocker inside with tattoo inspired animal prints or retro T-shirts with cartoon icons. For a fresh sporty look go with the American college style with bold lettering and bright colours.For more refined, semi-formal dressing then the die-hard, perennial polo shirt comes in many forms. From brilliant yellows to sorbet stripes and pink and purple hues. Wear it layered under a blazer for a modern look or with shorts and pumps for true yachting fashion. To complete the nautical theme try adding sailor-style detailing to your basics. There are T-shirts awash with nautical stripes and the high street has gone overboard with polo shirts in naval stripes of red and blue. The boating shoe also makes a comeback. They are casual, chic and comfortable, wear them with shorts or jeans for a real boating look.So ladies and gentlemen, there you have it, the season’s nautical look, cool, classy and simple. You don’t have to own a yacht to work this look, just dress as though you do! n

You are as young as your spine is flexible. Learn how to regain a youthful feeling.

We will practice yoga asanas (exercises) that are specifically designed to “awaken” the spine. We keep our minds focused on this aspect, and on breathing as we perform the asanas. There will be some easy breathing techniques for learning to relax body and mind. Also there will be a yoga nidra session (yoga relaxation) and a short meditation.Yoga is a very relaxed and non-competitive exercise. There is no competition at all, not between participants or even with yourself. Everybody does his/her own thing and everybody can enjoy it, all levels and ages. Bring an exercise mat (if you have one) and put on comfortable clothes. We will supply water, drinks and lunch. Weather permitting some sessions will take place on the beach opposite the centre.

Statistics show that 69% of adults ages 35 to 44 have lost at least one permanent tooth

to an accident, gum disease, a failed root canal or tooth decay. Furthermore, by age 74, 26% of adults have lost all of their permanent teeth. Twenty years ago, these patients would have had no alternative but to employ a fi xed bridge or removable denture to restore their ability to eat, speak clearly and smile. Fixed bridges and removable dentures, however, are not the perfect solution and often bring with them a number of other problems. Removable dentures may slip or cause embarrassing clicking sounds while eating or speaking. Of even greater concern, fi xed bridges often affect adjacent healthy teeth, and removable dentures may lead to bone loss in the area where the tooth or teeth are missing. Recurrent decay, gum disease and other factors often doom fi xed bridgework to early failure. For these reasons, fi xed bridges and removable dentures usually need to be replaced every seven to 15 years. Today there is another option for patients who are missing permanent teeth, dental implants. Dental implants are long-term replacements that your dentist places in the actual jawbone. Composed of titanium metal that fuses with the jawbone, dental implants never slip or make embarrassing noises, they never decay like previous solutions and because dental implants fuse with the jawbone, bone loss is not a problem either.After more than 20 years, the vast majority of dental implants fi rst placed by oral surgeons continue to still function at peak performance. More importantly, the recipients of those early dental implants are still satisfi ed they made the right choice. Although little by little the situation is changing, at this time an important part of

property ownership is usually not completed in terms of legal obligation with ‘Real Legislative Decree 1/2004, of 5 of March’. According to this law, you are required to register to its name, the property that has been acquired, either by means of transaction, succession or any other means, or indeed to register any physical change that has taken place to the property or it’s boundaries. This lack of attention can cause serious problems in the future.Any proprietor of a house or plot, or both, must make sure that the paper details of the property agree with the physical reality of the property. There are three areas of concern.1) Because the Real Decree, referenced at the beginning of this article, establishes the classification of a property, proprietors who do not declare alterations, modifications or extensions through the official forms, can be sanctioned with a fine between 60.00 and 6000 euros.2) Because being a public registry that incorporates the planes of each one of the plots or properties of each municipality with inclusion of the sensible data of the same ones, if a person with a parcel or property does not have the same enrolled in the ‘Cadastre’ or presents errors in the inscription is not to its name because it did not carry out the corresponding change of cadastral ownership, problems can arise. For example, if a neighbour wishes to carry out some modification to his property, the Cadastre will not be able to notify you that a neighbour is going to make a change that may affect your property or boundary, if you are not fully registered. You will have lost your right to appeal.3) In any purchase and sale of property, the notaries ask for descriptive and graphical cadastral certificates of the Cadastre. If these documents are not available, they will have to note it in the Public Scripture and, although the lack of cadastral certificates do not prevent the sale of a property from going through, it can slow the process down and complicate it to a degree, particularly if the lack of certificates from the Cadastre causes the buyer some concern as to the guarantee of boundary for example. In conclusion, I would like to emphasise that the correct inscription in the Cadastre of any property affects the legal security of the proprietary person and the person who may acquire the property in the future. If you have a property in Spain or you are in the process of buying one, please be aware of the Cadastre, it is there to protect everyone. Aunque poco a poco la situación va cambiando, una parte

importante de los propietarios de bienes inmuebles no suele cumplir con la obligación establecida en el Real Decreto Legislativo 1/2004, de 5 de marzo, por el que se aprueba el texto refundido de la Ley del Catastro Inmobiliario, de inscribir a su nombre la propiedad que posee o la que acaba de adquirir, ya sea mediante compraventa, sucesión o cualquier otro medio, o inscribir cualquier cambio físico que se produzca en esta, ya sea agrupación, segregación, obra nueva...etc. Esta “mala” costumbre hoy en día puede tener consecuencias bastante graves en el disfrute del derecho a la propiedad por parte de cualquier persona que posee un bien inmueble en España.El artículo 1 en su apartado primero de la referenciada norma que regula el Catastro define el mismo como “...un registro administrativo dependiente del Ministerio de Hacienda en el que se describen los bienes inmuebles rústicos, urbanos y de características especiales tal y como se definen en esta Ley”.Cualquier propietario de una vivienda o parcela, o ambas cosas, debe cerciorarse de que los detalles de la propiedad coinciden con la realidad física de la misma o con el título de propiedad, normalmente Escritura Pública, por tres motivos importantes desde un punto de vista práctico:1) Porque el Real Decreto referenciado al inicio de este artículo, y que regula el Catastro Inmobiliario, en su artículo 70 establece la tipificación como infracción tributaria simple, la falta de presentación de declaraciones no efectuadas en plazo y la que sean falsas o inexactas, es decir, que las personas que adquieran un bien inmueble, o aquellas que siendo propietarios segregan, agrupan su parcela, o amplían los metros cuadrados construidos de su vivienda, si no declaran dichas alteraciones o modificaciones en el catastro a través de los formularios oficiales, pueden ser sancionados con una multa que oscila entre 60,00 y 6.000,00 euros.2) Porque al ser el Catastro un registro público que incorpora los planos de cada una de las parcelas o propiedades de cada municipio con inclusión de los datos sensibles de las mismas, si una persona con una parcela o propiedad no tiene la misma inscrita en el Catastro, o presenta algún error en su inscripción o, aún estando recogida en el Catastro, no está a su nombre porque no llevó a cabo el correspondiente cambio de titularidad catastral, puede encontrarse con

la desagradable sorpresa de que un vecino suyo, por ejemplo, inscriba en el Catastro su propiedad o lleve a cabo alguna modificación de la misma que pueda afectarle a sus linderos. Y, si su propiedad no aparece a su nombre en el Catastro, o la misma ni siquiera aparece inscrita como hemos comentado, el Catastro no podrá notificarle que un vecino suyo va a proceder a realizar un cambio y que usted tiene un periodo de tiempo para alegar lo que estime conveniente. 3) En cualquier operación de compra y venta de un bien inmueble, los notarios están obligados a solicitar certificados catastrales descriptivos y gráficos del Catastro. En el supuesto de que no puedan aportar ese documento porque exista algún problema en el Catastro con la propiedad objeto de compraventa, deberán hacerlo constar en la Escritura Pública y, aunque esa falta de aportación de la referencia catastral mediante el certificado no impide que los notarios autoricen dicha Escritura, ni tampoco impide la inscripción en el Registro de la Propiedad de la misma, excepto en supuestos muy puntuales, los problemas que pueden surgir para el buen fin de la operación deben de tenerse en cuenta, ya que puede que el comprador de dicho inmueble ante la advertencia del notario tenga dudas de la situación de dicha propiedad y esto puede provocar la ruptura, o al menos la complicación, de dicha operación de compraventa. Como conclusión, me gustaría destacar que la correcta inscripción en el Catastro de cualquier propiedad tiene como principal consecuencia la seguridad jurídica de la persona propietaria de la misma y de la persona que pueda adquirirla en el futuro, así como de organismos administrativos. Si usted tiene una propiedad inmueble en España o está pensando adquirir una asegúrese de que la misma se encuentra inscrita en el catastro con todos los datos más importantes; situación, titularidad, extensión y linderos. I have always loved horseriding and I try to get out for a ride

whenever I can but not as often as I would like. My children go to the pony club at ‘los Olivillos’ in Competa natural park and always have such fun, so when Donna & Jeff suggested that they were planning one of their trips to Játar, I just couldn’t resist the opportunity and jumped at the chance.When I arrived, the birds were happily chirping away in the big Carob tree that takes centre stage in the attractive hacienda style stable yard of ‘Los Olivillos’. It was a lovely sunny day in mid February, the sky was that lovely shade of dark blue which really does make mother nature’s gifts look their best. I was to share my seven hour journey to Játar with Faraón who is a typically handsome Andalusian dapple grey. Donna, Jeff & Eunace were my companions

for this adventure and off we set on our journey. Up we travelled to the highest point above Cómpeta and beyond. As we looked back in the distance to the sea we could clearly see the attractive Málaga coastline, the views in every direction were totally spectacular. Wafts of fresh lavender filled the air as we made our way through the Alhama, Tejeda & Almijara mountain range. I couldn’t believe the huge variety of wild herbs growing here in abundance and it was lovely to have the time to fully appreciate the sight of so many trees coming into blossom. Wildlife was all around us too with regular sightings of wild mountain goats and we even spotted a pair of eagles carefully surveying us overhead. Amongst the clip clop of the hooves was the sound of fresh springwater gushing down through natural mountain streams & waterfalls. We arrived at Játar in the early evening. u

Mis niños van al club del poni en “Los Olivillos” en el parque natural de Cómpeta y siempre se divierten, así que cuando Donna & Jeff sugirieron que ellos planeaban uno de sus viajes a Játar, Yo no podía resistir la oportunidad y aproveché la posibilidad. Cuando llegué, los pájaros piaban felizmente lejos en el gran Algarrobo que coge el centro de la atractiva hacienda tipo establos de Los Olivillos. Era un agradable día soleado a mediados de febrero, el cielo tenía esa sombra encantadora azul oscura que hace que realmente los regalos de la naturaleza se vean mejor. Los soplos de lavanda fresca llenaban el aire al avanzar por Alhama, Tejeda y la cordillera de Almijara. Yo no podía creer la variedad inmensa de hierbas salvajes que crecen en abundancia aquí y fue agradable tener tiempo para apreciar toda la vista de tantos árboles que entran en flor. La fauna estaba por todas partes también con avistamientos regulares de cabras montesas salvajes e incluso avistamos un par de águilas inspeccionándonos cuidadosamente sobre nuestras cabezas. Entre el clip clop de los cascos estaba el sonido de agua fresca de primavera que baja a borbotones por las corrientes

naturales de la montaña y las cascadas. Llegamos a Játar a media tarde. Játar se asienta a los pies de las montañas de Almijarra y está situada a 45 km al suroeste de Granada. Teníamos reserva para quedarnos en el ‘Balcón de Játar’ una pensión familiar, la cual se encuentra fácilmente en el pueblo. Los anfitriónes Catherine y Rainer junto con sus niños Lupo y Helena llevan este establecimiento tan acogedor. Maravillosas vistas en una gran terraza que dan al lago Bermejales. La decoración del hotel está diseñada individualmente con mosaicos restaurados, las lámparas y artefactos excepcionales han sido colocadas con gusto y encanto acogedor. Cuando entramos, un gran fuego de leña rugía en el rincón a juego con un par de sillones atractivos. Catherine podía ver que necesitamos algunos mimos y nos proporcionó las bebidas que elegimos.

Jatar sits at the foot of the Almijarra mountains and is

situated 45km South West of Granada.We were booked in to stay at the ‘Balcón de Játar’ a family run pension, which is easily found in the town. Hosts Catherine and Rainer along with their children Lupo and Helena run this very welcoming establishment. Wonderful views on the large terrace look out to the lake Bermejales. The hotel décor is individually designed with reclaimed tiles, unusual lamps and artefacts and has been styled with taste and cosy charm. As we entered, a big log fire roared in the corner set with a couple of inviting armchairs. Catherine could see that we were in need of some tlc and set about providing us with our chosen tipples.

We then sat down for a nice hot supper with some of Catherine’s wonderful home made bread, it was absolutely scrumptious, too scrumptious!Catherine suggested on a future trip that we include a visit to the nearby hot springs at Los Baños de Alhama, a bathing centre from Roman times, where you can bathe in the natural hot springs at 38 degrees. Just the thing after a days riding.The next morning, feeling fully recharged we set off on our journey back home, we travelled on a narrow mule track through the mountains which took us over some of the most breathtaking scenery I have ever seen. The terrain was challenging, hard and rocky, yet these horses coped tremendously well with anything that we

encountered..We came across a couple of interesting ruins on our trip which had once been ‘ventas’ where traders who had bought items such as fish & lemons on the coast, would sell on or trade for goods & services at these establishments. The journey that we made was the same route that had been used for hundreds of years by these people with their mules.The strong scent from the pine trees, the crunching of the horses hooves in the snow and the fresh cold air on our cheeks was once again natures beauty at it’s finest. My visit to Játar really did have something to fulfill all of the senses. What an idyllic experience it was and how fortunate I was to be part of it. n

Catherine sugirió que en un futuro viaje incluyésemos una visita a la fuente termal en Los Baños de Alhama, una central para el baño desde el tiempo de los romanos, donde usted puede bañarse en las fuentes termales naturales a 38 grados. Justo lo mejor tras días cabalgando. A la mañana siguiente, sintiéndonos recargados completamente nos pusimos en camino con nuestro viaje de vuelta a casa, viajamos por un camino estrecho de mulas a través de las montañas que nos llevó por parte del paisaje más impresionante que jamás he visto. rocoso, más estos caballos se enfrentaron tremendamente bien con cualquier cosa que encontrábamos. Encontramos un par de ruinas interesantes en nuestro viaje que habían sido una vez “ventas” donde comerciantes que habían comprado artículos como pescado y limones en la costa, venderían o comerciarían por mercancías y servicios en estos establecimientos. El viaje que hicimos fue la misma ruta que había sido utilizada durante cientos de años por estas personas con sus mulos. El olor fuerte de los pinos, el crujir de los cascos de los caballos en la nieve y el fresco aire frío en las mejillas fue una vez más la belleza de la naturaleza en su máxima expresión. Mi visita a Játar tenía algo para satisfacer

realmente todos los sentidos. Qué experiencia tan idílica fue y lo afortunado que fui de formar parte de ella. n

Frigiliana is once again the chosen venue for the third

International Festival of Bellydancing, organised and produced by Russian born dancer Victoria Ivanova. Three days of workshops, a super show and an International gala make up the Festival weekend. The show titled “Sun and Joy” will be held at the Hotel Marinas de Nerja on Friday 24th and the entrance fee will include a buffet supper. The “superstar” of the show is Bozenka . choreographer for popstar Shakira. She’s coming all the way from Miami so she’s not to be missed.During the show there will be a raffle with a prize of a weekend for 2 in the same Hotel. The Gala on Saturday 25th will take place in the Sports Pavillion in Frigiliana. The dancers performing are from Israel, Italy, Belgium, Spain and Victoria herself will be taking part. The Egyptian Ambassador is planning to attend the event, which is dedicated to a fellow countryman, Mahmoud Reda, a legend in the world of dance in Eygpt and around the world, it’s really something to have brought him to teach in Frigiliana!These are the events planned for the evening but during the day there are non-stop

workshops from level zero to advanced, An Oriental bazaar to browse around, Middle-Eastern cuisine to try and an atmosphere of fun and the Far East.Even if you’re not “into” dancing this is something different-it’s magical and colourful and not easily forgotten!

TOM YAM GUNG (Spicy Sour Prawn Soup)

This is a great dish you can use either as a starter or main course and is

perfect for those chilly evenings once the sun has set and the temperature drops. It’s easy and delicious. Enjoy.

Preparation: Peel and head the prawns, leaving the last tail segment in place for better presentation. Cut deeply along each back and remove the gut line.Place the prawns in a mixing bowl and add 1/2 tsp lime juice and a little salt and combine well.

Method: In a pot heat the stock to medium heat and add the tom yum chili paste, lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, shallots, galangal, coriander root and red hot chilies. Boil until fragrant. About 1 minute. Add the mushrooms and tomatoes and cook until the mushrooms are tender. Add the fried fish, sweet basil and boil about 1 minute more. Add the fish sauce, spring onion, coriander leaves, and fried dried chilies. Boil briefly.Add the prawns and cook until colour turns to white.Turn off the heat and add the rest of the lemon juice and the coconut milk.Serve hot, garnished with coriander leaves.

Ingredients:Coconut milk 1⁄4 cup5/6 large prawns (NOT pre cooked) oyster or straw mushroom cut bite-size 1/2 cupcherry tomatoes cut in half 2Fresh or dried kaffir lime leaves 2thinly sliced fresh or frozen galangal 2 tbspthinly sliced lemon grass 1/4 cupcrushed chopped shallots 2crushed coriander stems 1chopped coriander leaves 1/4 cupchopped spring onions 1/4 cupsweet basil leaves 1/3 cupfresh red hot chillies 2 (or more)fried dried chilllies (optional) 4chili tom yum paste 1 tbspfish sauce 1 tbspfresh lime or lemon juice 1 tbspvegetable cooking oil 1/2 cupplain flour 1/3 cupchicken or vegetable stock 2 cups

Este es un plato fantástico que se puede servir como primer plato o bien como segundo

plato y es ideal para esas noches frescas que nos esperan en primavera. Es una receta fácil y el resultado final es estupendo. ¡Disfrútalo!

Preparación: Pelar y quitar las cabezas de las gambas, dejando la cascara en la cola para que la presentación final sea más bonita. Con un cuchillo pequeño hacer un corte a lo largo de la parte exterior de la gamba y extraer el nervio negro, vigilando no romper la carne. Meter las gambas en un recipiente y añadir media cucharadita de zumo de limón y un pizco de sal; mezclarlo todo bien.

Método: En una olla calentar el caldo a fuego moderado y añadir el paté tom yum con chile, el tallo de limoncillo, las hojas de lima cafre, los chalotes, el galanga (jengibre azul), raíz de cilantro y guindillas rojas. Hervir hasta que emita un olor aromático; normalmente se tarda alrededor de un minuto. Añadir los champiñones y tomates y cocer hasta que los champiñones estén blandos. Añadir el pescado frito, las hojas de albahaca y hervir durante un minuto. Añadir la salsa de pescado, la cebolleta, hojas de cilantro y las guindillas secas, que previamente se fríen. Hervir por poco tiempo. Añadir las gambas y cocer hasta que el caldo sea de color blanco. Retirar del fuego y añadir lo que ha sobrado del zumo de limón y la crema de coco. Servirla caliente, acompañada de hojas de cilantro.

favourites too. Proprietors Valerie and Pepe are two of the most charming people you could ever wish to meet and they operate a wonderful restaurant. The ambience is friendly and welcoming and the food is superb. It is all home made by Valerie, with many of the dishes incorporating an international flavour influenced no doubt by her French roots. Only the finest freshest ingredients are used to create the dishes and local produce is used wherever possible. I have taken many visitors to La Bodega and it never fails to impress. There is something special about La Bodega de Pepe which, evidently, draws visitors from far and wide to dine on the large outside terrace and in the cosy dining areas inside. A visit to Frigiliana is simply not complete without enjoying the hospitality, views and cuisine of La Bodega de pepe...Enjoy!

For those of you who have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing the Alberdini allow me to tell you a little

about it. The Alberdini is a delightful rural hotel nestled on the outskirts of Cómpeta. The style has a definite Gaudi influence, which can be seen in the choice of conceptual mosaics and tiles, alongside the use of strong colours and unique shapes. The Alberdidni is open 7 days a week for residents and non residents alike and offers a multitude of services and facilities including a restaurant, bar, several lounge areas and function suites, 7 hotel bedrooms, 4 individual bungalows, a swimming pool (due to open summer 09) and the most wondeful views from the three outside terraces. On a warm sunny morning in February we caught up with Inez Leniere, (proprietor of the Alberdini with husband and business partner Rob) on one of the outside terraces. Over fresh coffee and croissants, Inez told us about the future plans for the Alberdini.

OCIO: Inez, if I asked you to give me a short mission statement on the Alberdini, what would it be?Inez: Simply that we aim to provide a personal experience for each and every one of our clients, a unique experience, whether you come for a coffee or glass of wine, a light lunch or tapas, an evening meal or an overnight stay in one of our delightful bedrooms or bungalows. The hotel has a wide range of quality accommodation at an affordable price available for all those who wish to explore the beauty of Cómpeta and its surrounding coastal and National Park areas. The most special thing about the Alberdini is the combination

of rustic charm and modern comfort. The enchanting spirit of this rural hideaway makes the Alberdini totally unforgettable. We want everyone to feel comfortable and at home, no matter what they are here for.OCIO: In terms of hotel guests what type of people are booking with you? Inez: We are attracting individuals and groups of people that want active breaks and holidays. Cycling, walking, horesriding that type of thing, Our location and the beautiful countryside lends itself to this type of holiday guest. We are working closely with Los Olivillos for the horseriding, which is very popular, and Montaña Tours for the biking, cycling and walking. We are even organising a diving party who want to stay with us for the countryside location but naturally want to dive down on the coast which is only 20 minutes away.Very interestingly we also have bookings and enquiries for classes and courses wanting to use all the hotel facilities. For example we have a yoga retreat from the 9th - 16th May. They will be using most of our bedrooms for the duration of the retreat along with the functions rooms and the terraces for the classes and workshops. This group are even bringing their own celebrity chef , Simone Parris. She will be preparing the groups very particular menus. Incidently, this retreat is also open to locals as well as the overseas guests they are bringing with them, so if any of the OCIO readers would like to come along and join in they are most welcome. Para los que todavía no han podido disfrutar de lo que ofrece el Alberdini, dejadme contaros un poco

sobre lo que se encuentra allí. El Alberdini es un encantador hotel rural que se halla en las afueras del pueblo de Cómpeta. Se puede notar una distintiva influencia del artista Gaudi en la elección de los mosaicos y azulejos y el uso de colores vivos y formas originales. El Alberdini se abre los siete días de la semana y sus servicios incluyen un restaurante, bar, varios salones para eventos, 7 dormitorios en el hotel, 4 bungaló individuales, una piscina que se espera abrir este verano y unas vistas realmente espectaculares desde cada una de las tres terrazas.Durante una mañana cálida de febrero nos quedamos con Inez (quien con la ayuda de su marido y socio Rob ha vuelto a abrir el Alberdini) en una de las magníficas terrazas del local. Mientras comíamos unos cruasanes acompañados de un buen café, ella nos hablaba de sus planes para el futuro.

OCIO: Inez, si te dijera que me hablaras del espíritu del Alberdini, ¿qué me dirías?Inez: Bueno, te diría que nuestra intención es ofrecer una experiencia personal a cada uno de nuestros clientes: una experiencia única que será igual para los que vienen a tomar un café o un vaso de vino como para los que vienen a cenar o a quedarse en uno de nuestros encantadores dormitorios. El hotel rural se enorgullece de tener a la disposición de todos los que quieren explorar la belleza de Cómpeta, sus costas y sierras, alojamiento de alta calidad a muy buen precio. Lo mejor del Alberdini es la combinación de lo rústico con lo moderno, ¡algo que ha nos ha ayudado en crear un sitio totalmente inolvidable!OCIO: ¿Qué tipo de personas suelen hacer una reserva?Inez: En la mayor parte son clientes, o bien individuales o bien como parte de un grupo, que buscan unas vacaciones activas en las que pueden disfrutar de actividades como el ciclismo, el senderismo o montar a caballo. La ubicación de nuestro hotel rural ofrece varias posibilidades. Trabajamos con la empresa Los Olivillos, un centro ecuestre que tiene mucho éxito, y Montana Tours para organizar las actividades con moto, bicicleta o para el senderismo. Además, ahora mismo estamos organizando unas vacaciones para un grupo de buceo: quieren quedarse con nosotros porque pueden disfrutar tanto del mar como de la montaña dado que estamos a sólo 20 minutos de la costa. Ya hemos hecho algunas reservas para algunos grupos que quieren reservar todas las habitaciones para hacer un curso especializado, como por ejemplo, un curso residencial de Yoga que tendrá lugar del 9 al 16 de mayo. Este grupo, además de usar los dormitorios, ha reservado algunos de los salones y terrazas, donde realizarán sus talleres. También, van a traer a su chef particular, el conocido Simone Parris, para que les prepare unos menús especiales durante su estancia. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Salsa classes starting on the 1st April and there are plans to start classes in Flamenco,Thai Chi and much more. One of the main points about the function rooms is that when the weather is suitable, these classes can be held outside on one of our terraces. Can you imagine studying Thai Chi outside on the terrace as the sun sets on the horizon, the beautiful views as far as the eye can see, stunning. OCIO: Sounds great although I may prefer to swap the Thai Chi for a beer?Inez: Sounds familiar! But seriously, guests that want to visit to do just that are of course very welcome. Remember, we are open to all. OCIO: Just looking around the place it occurs to me that it would make a great location for a function wanting ‘exclusive use’. Would you entertain such a booking?Inez: Indeed we would and we do. Recently I have received enquiries for two such events. One is a team building weekend for a company based in Holland and the other is a 50th birthday party. Both groups want exclusive use and all the bedrooms. The Alberdini is perfect for this type of event and we can meet any requirements, however bizarre or creative from special menus, live music, magicians, conference/meeting materials, transport, etc. OCIO: We haven’t spoken very much about the restaurant and bar, how is that going.Inez: We are doing well with general bookings and walk in diners and the party nights we had over the festive season were a fantastic success. Our kitchen is open every day from 13.00h to 16.00h and 19.00h to 23.00h. We offer a full menu and a menu del dia every day. In between kitchen hours we offer tapas all day and of course the bar is open for drinks and coffees.OCIO: Now the weather is warming up you must be very excited about using the terraces, they really are a fabulous selling point for you.Inez: Well we have three terraces. One is laid up with tables and chairs and is ideally suited towards food and drinks as normal. The second terrace will be more relaxed with lounge style furniture and cushions. The third terrace is alongside the swimming pool which will be operational for the summer. We will also place some board games outside as well, chess, draughts, backgammon etc so guests can enjoy a game or two in the sunshine over a relaxing drink.OCIO: Inez you really do have so much going on here and your energy and enthusiasm for the business is really quite refreshing. The problem I have is that just from our discussions this morning I have a pad full of notes to translate onto a few pages of the magazine, I could really do with a ten page article instead of a four page one!Inez: I know, me, Rob and the team we have here are all very keen to make the Alberdini ‘the place to be’. Inez: Claro, de hecho, ya he estado en contacto con dos personas que quieren alquilar el local en su totalidad: uno de ellos es de una empresa holandesa que quiere traer a todo el equipo para desarrollar actividades de integración durante un fin de semana y la otra persona quiere el local para celebrar una fiesta para alguien que cumple 50 años. Los dos grupos quieren un uso exclusivo de todo, incluso los dormitorios. El Alberdini es el sitio perfecto para este tipo de evento porque podemos satisfacer las necesidades de cualquier persona...¡por muy raras que sean! Podemos ofrecer menús especiales, organizar música en vivo, transporte o materiales específicas para conferencias. OCIO: No hemos hablado mucho del bar. ¿Cómo va todo?Inez: Ahora mismo las cosas van bien y el restaurante ha tenido muchas reservas. Además tuvimos mucho éxito con las fiestas que organizamos durante las navidades. La cocina se abre todos los días desde 13.00 hasta 16.00 y luego por la noche entre las 19.00 y las 23.00. Se ofrece un menú del día todos los días además de comida de la carta y tapas. Y por supuesto el bar está abierto a partir de las 10.00. OCIO: Ahora que hace mejor tiempo tenéis que estar

ilusionados con poder usar las terrazas dado que son una de las grandes ventajas de este local.Inez: Bueno, tenemos tres terrazas diferentes. La terraza donde estamos sentados ahora la hemos amueblado con mesas para que la gente pueda comer al aire libre. La segunda terraza será más informal y tendrá unos sofás y sillones cómodos. La tercera terraza se encontrará al lado de la piscina, y si conseguimos los permisos necesarios, la abriremos este verano. Habrá unos juegos fuera también, como el ajedrez, damas y el backgammon para poder disfrutar al máximo mientras que tomáis algo.OCIO: ¡Inez hay tanto que se puede hacer aquí en el Alberdini! Además tu entusiasmo y energía es realmente impresionante. El único problema que hay es que tengo una libreta llena de apuntes de nuestra conversación esta mañana que ¡no sé cómo voy a ponerlo todo en un artículo de 4 páginas! ¡Sería mejor 10 páginas en vez de 4!Inez: ¡Lo sé! Easter in Spain is a little different to the UK. In Britain

the commercial aspect plays a big part and seems to be more about chocolate eggs than anything else. Here in Spain it is much more of a religious matter with processions parading through the streets for up to a week before Easter Sunday. We all know this time of year as ‘La Semana Santa’. As in most Christian countries, Easter Sunday is traditionally marked by church services, often held at dawn so that worshippers can view the sunrise, a symbol of Christ’s resurrection. Afterwards Easter eggs are exchanged and eaten. Parades will normally follow, during which people will wear their finest clothes. Later the family will gather for a big lunch or dinner, which in England traditionally revolved around a roast spring lamb.The eggs and rabbits that we are all familiar with are adopted symbols of Easter as they represent fertility and new life. Chocolate bunnies and Easter eggs, often adorned in

colourful foil wrappers, are given to children as presents or are hidden for the Easter morning “egg hunt.”Here in Spain, the eggs are catching on with each passing year but there are some other traditional treats that mark the Easter Sunday. Area to area the treats may vary but they all have one thing in common, they should be enjoyed in typical spanish style, with family and friends. Many are made especially for children, while others are for all to share. After the long, arduous fast and strict observations of Lent, it’s hardly surprising that some thought has gone into creating such wonderful dishes to celebrate the end of the fasting period. One traditional treat is a cake known as ‘La Mona’. These delicious chocolate delicacies can be of any shape, from the traditional round pan shape, to Disney characters, toys and pretty much anything else the baker thinks will appeal to a child. Another dish synonymous with Easter is the torrijas. It’s equal in the UK would perhaps be the hot cross bun, a particular favourite

at this time of year. The Torrija is a lovely concoction that consists of slices of warm bread soaked in milk, sugar and egg, then fried in olive oil. These custard filled fried pastries are often a great consolation to visitors who are perplexed on seeing how empty the city is, as most of the locals use the Easter holidays to escape to the mountains and the more exuberant south. This dish is a popular dessert item in the restaurants and pastry shops, together with pestiños (pastries with sesame and honey) and buñuelos (yet more fried pastries) and, although they may not be good for the waistline, they are most definitely good for improving your outlook on life!

La Pascua en España es un poco diferente a Inglaterra. En

Gran Bretaña el aspecto comercial juega un gran papel y parece ser más huevos de chocolate que otra cosa. Aquí en España es mucho más un asunto religioso con procesiones que desfilan por las calles desde una semana antes del Domingo de Resurrección. Todos conocemos esta época del año como ‘La Semana Santa’. Como en la mayoría de los países cristianos, el Domingo de Resurrección está marcado tradicionalmente por los servicios religiosos, a menudo hasta el amanecer para que los devotos puedan ver la salida del sol, símbolo de la resurrección de Cristo. Después se intercambian los huevos de Pascua y se comen. Los desfiles seguirán con normalidad, durante los cuales, las personas llevarán su ropa más elegante. Después la familia se reunirá para un gran almuerzo o una cena, la cual en Inglaterra gira tradicionalmente alrededor de un cordero de primavera asado.

Los huevos y los conejos con los que todos estamos familiarizados son adoptados como símbolos de Pascua, representan la fecundidad y la nueva vida. Los conejitos de chocolate y los huevos de Pascua, a menudo se adornan con envolturas de aluminio de colores, se les da a los niños como regalo o se esconden para la “caza del huevo” la mañana de Pascua. Aquí en España, los huevos están alcanzando gran popularidad cada año que pasa pero hay otros gustos tradicionales que marcan el Domingo de Resurrección. Área a área los gustos pueden variar pero todos tienen una cosa en común, deben ser disfrutados al estilo típico español, con la familia y amigos. Muchos se hacen especialmente para niños, mientras que otros son para compartirlos todos. Después de tan arduo ayuno y estrictas observaciones de Cuaresma, apenas sorprende que algunos pensamientos hayan creado platos tan maravillosos para celebrar el fin del período de ayuno. Un gusto tradicional es un pastel conocido como “La Mona”. Estas delicadezas deliciosas de chocolate pueden ser de cualquier forma, desde la forma redonda tradicional de la cacerola, a personajes de Disney, los juguetes y otras cosas bonitas que el panadero piensa que atraerán a

un niño. Otro plato sinónimo a la Pascua son las torrijas. Algo igual en el Reino Unido, sería quizás el bollo del Viernes Santo, particularmente preferido en esta época del año. La Torrija es una maravillosa mezcla que consiste en rebanadas de pan duro empapado en leche, azúcar y huevo, entonces frito en aceite de oliva. Pueden bañarse en vino, sirope, miel, azúcar o canela para un toque extra más rico. Para un gusto más substancial de Pascua, usted quizás prefiera la llegada del hornazo. Este pastel grande está lleno generalmente de lomo de cerdo, jamón y carne de vaca pero hay también una versión dulce hecha con almendras, azúcar y anís. Los Bartolillos madrileños son, como el nombre indica, una especialidad de Madrid. Estos pastelitos rellenos de crema son a menudo un gran consuelo para los visitantes que están desconcertados al ver lo vacía que está la ciudad, cuando la mayoría de la gente usa las vacaciones de Pascua para escapar a las montañas y al sur más exuberante.
