Sultan Qaboos RoseAn inspiration behind the brand

T he Identity for the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre

(OCEC) is based on the roof design of the main auditorium. This architectural design was an interpretation of the Sultan Qaboos Rose – a bespoke, genetically designed rose, named after His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said.

The symbol is a graphic interpretation of the roof structure creating a unique and intricate symbol, reminiscent of arabesque artwork which has a strong and obvious tie-in to the building itself.

Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) is undoubtedly one of the most important tourism investment projects in the country. But in addition to its importance as a strategic economic project, it also promises to engender pride in every Omani because of its truly iconic stature and its development into one of the great landmarks of modern Oman.

The OCEC project is a key element in the integrated tourism development strategy adopted by Oman. It will play a central role in positioning the Sultanate on the world map of destinations specializing in meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibition events (MICE).

It is our hope that this mega project will serve as a new and sustainable source of revenue for the national economy, thereby advancing our economic diversification objectives. The project will not only stimulate the growth of the tourism sector in general, but also unlock business and investment opportunities that will drive GDP growth.

We are heartened by the findings of experts who have determined that the OCEC project will make significant socioeconomic contributions. In particular, it has the potential to stimulate the growth of small and medium enterprises, as well as attract large investors to the opportunities that will inevitably flow from this exciting endeavour. Many business opportunities are expected to be generated in the field of services, retail, F&B and transportation.

There will be substantial social benefits too. The OCEC project will create thousands of jobs for Omani citizens. The project will also contribute to national capacity building, affording Omanis the opportunity to attend many specialized events and share knowledge and expertise with visitors.

Construction work on this prestigious development is well under way. When operational, it will provide strong new impetus to the growth of the tourism industry in Oman. We look forward to its smooth and successful completion as we herald a new chapter in the development of the sector and the national economy in general.

OCEC will stimulate Oman’s

economy by creating jobs on a significant scale

OCECA major driver of business tourism

As a mega project of strategic national significance, the Oman Convention and Exhibition

Center (OCEC) promises to spawn a wealth of socioeconomic benefits with positive implications for the longer term development of the country. In addition to creating employment opportunities on an immense scale – both direct and indirect – the project promises to spur the development of large numbers of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Further, with hundreds of thousands of international visitors expected to patronize the venue every year, the potential knock-on effects on the wider economy are huge.

A socio-economic impact assessment study conducted by Booz & Co identifies a range of spinoffs from the OCEC project. The venture will enable Oman to improve its brand, support promotion activities and promote tourism while providing various opportunities to SMEs in the areas of operations, services, retail, F&B and transport. On completion, the development is expected to attract 600,000 visitors per year, offer over 1,000 rooms, and provide 120,000 sq metres of retail space, according to the study.

Job creation will be one of the project’s biggest payoffs. By the year 2030, the OCEC will have generated between

4,000 to 6,000 direct jobs, in addition to 15,000 to 18,000 indirect jobs. An estimated 12,000 workers are expected to be employed during the construction phase, underscoring the massive employment generating potential of the undertaking.

Beneficial implications for local businesses and the economy are also substantial, the study says. Around RO 295 million in project-related expenditures will be absorbed by the Omani economy. This includes RO 130 – 150 million in revenues for companies dealing in Omani products. By 2030, the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center is expected to contribute nearly

a third of tourism-related revenues, an impressive percentage by any reckoning.

SME development is seen as a key spinoff. The project promises to unlock a wealth of opportunities for small and medium businesses across a wide spectrum of economic sectors, including services, retail, food, transportation, and so on. In this regard, Omran is also working closely with the Public Authority for SME Development (PASMED) in the formulation of a strategy to ensure that the project delivers robustly on the SME development front.

From the very outset, the OCEC project has been conceived and designed to ensure it meets the most stringent technical

and quality standards. Towards this end, Omran tapped some of the world’s best known consultants specializing in the master planning, architectural design and other elements of mega-scale convention centres. The selection of construction contractors was based on stringent, measured and technically and commercially comprehensive evaluation criteria in line with Omran’s mandate to develop projects that contribute to the national economy, local communities and the country’s burgeoning hospitality sector.

A feasibility study commissioned by Omran estimated the initial cost of the project at RO 612 million, excluding

the cost of the super-mall, which is proposed to be funded by a leading private developer. The Omani government, for its part, is pitching in with the land, as well as infrastructure costs.

A careful review by the project’s technical team helped reduce the total cost of the venture by a hefty 23 per cent. This exercise, combined with the use of innovative design and engineering solutions based on sustainability principles, helped enhance the overall viability of this landmark venture.

Work on the project continues apace, with Omran having awarded a number of key contracts totalling RO 82.2 million in value during the course of 2013. A further set of packages for design and construction services, and collectively worth around RO 66 million, are under tender.

The biggest of the contracts awarded thus far concerns Package 2 of the OCEC project. Well-known construction firm Carillion Alawi has been awarded the contract valued at RO 78 million. It includes a structured car park facility for 4,200 vehicles on three parking levels, Exhibition Halls of approximately

22,000 sqm of leasable space, a concourse with a glazed curtain wall system, fully equipped with main production kitchen and three cafes, hospitality suites, administration areas, a central landscaped courtyard and two circulation nodes connecting the concourse to the car park.

Furthermore, the package also covers the ancillary buildings, namely the Energy Center which serves as the District Cooling Plant for the entire precinct in addition to a security screening facility, taxi amenity building, waste management building, landscape maintenance building and electrical substation facility.

Last September, Omran and Oman National Investments Development Company SAOC signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Dubai-headquartered Al-Futtaim for the development and management of a super-regional mall within the OCEC complex.

At the MoU signing, Omran Chairman His Excellency Nasser bin Khamis al Jashmi stressed the significance of the partnership for Oman’s socioeconomic development, particularly employment generation.

“During its development phases, the project will create many new employment opportunities for Omanis and upon completion it will have the potential of becoming a key long-term employer for the Sultanate’s career seekers across a variety of sectors, from retail, marketing, sales, to catering and entertainment,” said HE Al Jashmi.

Al-Futtaim’s Vice Chairman, Omar Al Futtaim, welcomed the opportunity to invest in the country’s retail sector, while underlining the importance of retail hubs of this nature for Oman’s tourism industry. “This is a significant milestone for Al-Futtaim’s operations in Oman, a country where we have enjoyed a long and prosperous presence for the last 40 years. The creation of major retail hubs is crucial towards the development of tourism as it helps destinations attract both regional and domestic traffic and this agreement today lays the foundations upon which Muscat can enhance its future tourism product and enrich the city’s retail landscape,” he said. More recently, the Sultanate’s leading telecom services provider, Omantel, signed an MoU with Omran for the construction of the telco’s new state-

of-the-art headquarters within the OCEC complex, with 40,000 square metres of built-up area and parking for more than 1,200 vehicles.

Playing a pivotal role in the future success of the OCEC project is AEG Ogden who, as Venue Manager, has responsibility for marketing, promoting and operating the complex. A joint venture between Australian venue management interests and AEG of the United States, AEG Ogden is the unrivalled leader in the global venue management industry.

Since the group’s appointment as Venue Manager for OCEC, AEG Ogden has been working in partnership with Omran, the Ministry of Tourism, and other key stakeholders in introducing the world to Oman and as the new hub for major international conventions, meetings and business events. A number of international and regional organisations have already expressed a strong desire to hold future events in Muscat.

Although still under construction, the OCEC project is targeting significant world standard congresses to host when it opens for business in late 2016. AEG Ogden and its partners have been proactive in

their efforts to attract major international events that in turn will deliver significant educational and economic benefits to the region. Several site visits have been conducted with leading medical, oil and gas and scientific-related specialists to showcase the benefits of staging their congresses in a spectacular and historic setting.

Among the recent visitors have been the heads of the Montreal-based International Society of Urology (SIU) and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Commenting on the significance of these visits, Mr. Trevor McCartney, General Manager for the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre, said: “Hosting these two congresses alone will attract more than 5,000 leading medical specialists which will deliver very significant social and economic benefits to the Sultanate. While Oman is now a serious player, these opportunities would not have been possible without the Government’s vision to develop the world-class Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre capable of hosting these types of numbers and providing the highly technical demands required for such events.”

The Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) will serve as a key pivot in developing a thriving meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) industry in the Sultanate, says Eng. Said Al Qasmi, Chief Project Officer, OCEC.

The landmark development will add a new dimension to the country’s vibrant tourism sector, thereby enhancing the industry’s contribution to economic growth and the GDP as well, he notes.

Commenting on the importance of the OCEC project to the local tourism economy, Al Qasmi explains: “One of the studies presented at the Gulf Incentive, Business Travel and Meetings Exhibition (GIBTM) held in Abu Dhabi last year affirmed Oman’s potential to emerge as a major destination for MICE tourism in the region. The OCEC project, which is scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2016, will help crystallize that objective.”

Spearheading this endeavour is Omran, a company mandated by the Government of Oman to play a strategic role in the development of the tourism and hospitality sector, says the official. “Omran’s role is to achieve the government’s vision for elevating the tourism sector into an important engine for economic growth. We work with national and international partners to create successful‚ revenue - and job-generating projects. Our portfolio includes luxury hotels and resorts‚ an excellent sports venue‚ business destinations and several large-scale joint venture developments.”

Omran-led mega projects, many of which are in advanced stages of implementation, have the potential to transform the tourism industry, according to the project head. They will also contribute immensely to the socioeconomic development of the country, notably in the area of employment generation.

“Studies by international experts commissioned by Omran show that the OCEC in particular will make a robust contribution to the social and economic development of Omani society. This is evident from the huge volume of applications we have been received from local and international candidates for various positions that will be created within the project. During the period from 2013-end to date, we received more than 1600 applications from professionals eager to take up positions within OCEC. We are keen to attract the best local and international talent, keeping in view the importance of the project,” said Al Qasmi.

The project’s beneficial impacts are also evident during the construction phase. More than 6,000 people are currently employed at site and by various contractors engaged by Omran to deliver various services linked to the implementation of this grandiose undertaking. Equally importantly,

more than half of the total spend on construction activities is being retained within the country, thereby helping create new business and employment opportunities.

Partnering with Omran in the positioning and marketing of OCEC is AEG Ogden, one of the world’s largest venue management groups, said Al Qasmi. “AEG Ogden is actively promoting the Center through its participation in various international expos and fairs. As OCEC’s Venue Manager, AEG Ogden has also been encouraging leading international events management organizations to consider Muscat as a destination for their exhibition events starting from the third quarter of 2015, and for conventions starting from the second quarter of 2017. A number of international event managers have already expressed keen interest in staging their events in the Sultanate of Oman once the project is completed,”

he added. Considerable efforts are also being

made in attracting international events that will result in economic, cultural and educational benefits to Oman. In this regard, a number of organizers of prominent oil and gas, healthcare and scientific events have voiced their keenness to bring their forums to the OCEC.

In a sign of the Center’s early appeal, more than 1,000 of the world’s top food industry professionals will descend on Muscat to participate in the 27th Annual International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) Mideast & Africa District Conference and Expo due to take place from 5-9 December 2016, said Al Qasmi.

“The IAOM MEA Congress at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre will attract decision makers from the multinational companies, along with a range of investors looking for new business opportunities,” he explained.

Oman Convention & Exhibition Center (OCEC)

Oman’s launchpad into the global MICE industry

12 Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre

A landmark of truly stunning proportions, the Oman Convention & Exhibition Center (OCEC) is the Sultanate’s springboard into the mega-billion dollar global meetings, incentive holidays, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) industry. This world-class hub in the making, coupled with Oman’s well-established reputation as singularly spectacular tourist destination, promises to be the new game-changer for the country’s vibrant tourism and hospitality industry.

Strategically located a mere 4km from Muscat International Airport, OCEC is coming up in Hay Al Irfan, a largely green-field district that is also home to an array of upscale leisure, hospitality and entertainment landmarks, all under various stages of design and development. As the most prestigious of these developments, OCEC will be the pride of this emerging leisure hotspot of the capital city and, of course, an anchor for the country’s nascent conventions and exhibitions industry.

Overseeing the development of this iconic project is Omran, the Omani government’s master developer, investor and hospitality asset manager. With over $10 billion worth of hospitality and leisure projects under ownership, design or development – either independently or in partnership with prominent regional developers – Omran is a key driving force, alongside the Ministry of Tourism, in catalysing the growth of the Sultanate’s hugely promising tourism industry.

As the nation’s principal hub for international-class exhibitions and conferences, the OCEC project has been conceived and designed to host a wide range of events, ranging from conventions, expos and symposiums to concerts,

lighting and rigging requirements to act as a multi-purpose space for plenary sessions, concerts, performances, gala events on a larger scale of up to 10,000 seated theatre-style. The complex will also include an additional 14 meeting rooms for 70-360 delegates, two well-appointed ballrooms to seat up to 2,360, VIP Pavilion, a spacious food-court and a multi-storey car

banquets, entertainment shows and other special events. That flexibility, built into the design of the convention centre, will enable Omran and its venue manager, AEG Ogden, to position Oman as a one-stop destination for all kinds of events which in turn has the potential to attract hundreds of thousands of MICE visitors.

Accordingly, every aspect of the OCEC initiative has been carefully conceived and designed to ensure it fits into the ambitious vision set out by Omran for this strategically important national undertaking. For example, the layout of the centre and the surrounding precinct has been meticulously studied to ensure a flow of the meetings space to suit the most discerning conference and exhibition organisers. Expansive concourse areas will offer ease of access and convenience for large delegations, while floor to ceiling windows overlooking landscaped gardens and water features.

Covering an area of 1,690,000 sqm, the OCEC project is truly ambitious in scale. In addition to the centerpiece convention centre, which is a massive structure in itself, the complex will incorporate four hotels, residential apartment blocks, business centre, retail centre and Oman’s largest mall complex.

The project site is abuzz with activity with an army of workers, mobilized by their respective contractors, busy executing a host of contracts. While much of the landscaping work is substantially complex, the focus of their efforts is centred on the convention centre itself, and two hotel properties, among a host of other components.

At the heart of the project is an elaborate tiered auditorium to seat 3,200 while the exhibition halls

will feature 22,000 square metres of column-free exhibition space, which is twice the size of the current exhibition center at Seeb. This component of the OCEC project can be expanded in the future to offer 40,000 square metres of leasable exhibition area.

Halls 1 and 2 will have a superior fit out, specialised acoustic treatment, advanced

park with capacity for 4,200 vehicles.

The auditoriums, which together make up 6,000 sq metres of leasable space, are designed to host gala events and social gatherings of different sizes. Separate entrances and dedicated car parks allow for the convenient use of the auditoriums even if other areas of the sprawling convention centre are simultaneously busy.

Of the auditoriums, the biggest is on the upper level of the structure. Covering an area of 2,500 sq metres, it can seat up to 1,500 people, thus making it the largest covered auditorium to date in the Sultanate.

For conventions, there is another auditorium that can accommodate up to 800 persons. All around this facility are a total of 22 meeting rooms of areas ranging from 65 to

is the food court teeming with outlets offering all kinds of cuisine keeping in mind the varied tastes of OCEC’s diverse target audience. Up to 800 guests can dine in at any time in a delightful setting overlooking a breathing outdoor garden. For large groups, a central kitchen will be equipped to cook up 3,000 sumptuous meals per day.

Complementing the OCEC project is a precinct that will house a 300-key, five-star hotel built adjacent to the main convention centre. Other major components of the precinct area are two four-star hotels offering 400 rooms in all, and a three-star hotel with 300 rooms, plus a number of serviced apartments.

In another part of the OCEC complex is envisaged a full-fledged Business Center designed to attract corporate entities that specialize in providing services to visitors and guests. Set on an area of 40 hectares, the Business Center will offer around 100,000 sq metres of leasable office space, fitted out with all modern facilities and services.

Adding a strong retail, leisure and entertainment component to the OCEC project is a super-regional mall that will be developed and managed by the Dubai-headquartered Al Futtaim Group. Oman National Investments Development Co SAOC is also an investor in this retail hub.

The mall will be strategically located adjacent to the Convention and Exhibition Center and aspires to become a leading, mixed-use retail destination that will be home to the first IKEA store in Muscat and other renowned global brands such as Marks & Spencer and Toys R Us. It will also feature an entertainment and food court complex.

Other utilities and facilities that make up this expansive project site include prayer rooms for men and women, media centre, public transport parking areas, maintenance workshops, health centre, helicopter pad, and a multi-storey car park providing ample spaces for 4,200 cars.

OCEC offers 22,000 square metres of column free exhibition space which is twice the size of the current Exhibition Centre. Ample land has been reserved for future expansion to reach 40,000 square metres of leasable exhibition area.

170 sq metres, and designed to cater to groups of different sizes. Foldable sections between these meeting halls make it possible to create larger spaces for big groups, or conversely, small, cozy spaces for small groups.

As with all convention centres of this magnitude, F&B arrangements at the OCEC complex will be truly lavish. Tucked away between the convention and exhibition halls

Work on the Sultanate’s iconic Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre is progressing at a steady pace and within pre-set timelines and budgets. With the centre positioned to become a catalyst for Oman’s success in the global business of conventions and events, a substantial chunk of project’s development is well on its way to completion.

In April 2013, Omran - developers of the monumental project - awarded a spate of infrastructure works packages that centre chiefly on building public facilities and road networks at the site. Included in these is the construction of 4.4 km single carriageway roads, 1.3 km dual carriageway roads, six roundabouts, a 100-metre Wadi Bridge and utilities that include 3.7 km portable and 4.1 km waste-water networks, five-kilometer irrigation and electrical networks as well as telecommunication ducts.

In June the same year, a second

works package valued at RO78.4 million was awarded. This package includes the construction of a 4,200-capacity vehicle park over three parking levels, exhibition halls, plant rooms, four acoustically treated vertically movable partitions, a fully equipped central kitchen and three cafes, hospitality suites, administrative/office areas, a central landscaped courtyard and two circulation nodes connecting the concourse to the car park. The scope of Package II also extends to the construction of ancillary buildings such as the energy centre.A construction contract was awarded for the first of two 33kV/11kV primary substations to serve the development of Phase I. Later, a revised tender was issued for the center’s primary substation number 2, which will feed the mall and business park. Additionally, tenders were awarded for kitchen equipment packages to optimise

revenue opportunities arising from catering once the exhibition centre is completed.

This year, Omran shortlisted 13 large companies – a mix of local and international consortiums – for the tendering of Package III. An award for this package was announced in the first quarter of this year.

Since they were awarded, most of the construction and infrastructure packages have made remarkable progress. The capacity of the District Cooling Station (Energy Centre) has been expanded and incorporated with better efficiencies to provide chilled water to the entire development. Master planning of the Business Park has also been completed and the architectural design development stage for the Omran headquarters building is also complete.

Construction of site utilities and roads that feature in the package-V construction works have also made

significant headway since being awarded last year. Bridge piers and abutments have been completed; 20 km of utilities tunnels have been excavated to store chilled and potable water, installations have been made for irrigation and sewage pipes as well as electrical and telecommunication conduits. The concrete structure of the exhibition halls is now ready for the installation of 50-ton steel

trusses, which are being fabricated in Sohar. Energy Centre foundation works are progressing, as are the car-park support columns and walls.

In the coming stage of the project, the remainder components of the packages including works for the business park, the hotels, the residential units, the apartments and other components will be completed.

Sultanate in 1976, Atkins has delivered an impressive portfolio of projects that include the urban master-planning of Sohar, Sultan Qaboos Boulevard, Ras Al Hamra Retreat and Resort, Oman Botanic Garden, and Bahla World Heritage Site. Atkins played a pivotal role in the design and development

of the Asian Beach Games venue at Musannah, overseeing everything from the master plan, concept plan, detailed design and site supervision.

In the oil and gas sector, Atkins provided architectural and engineering design services for projects linked to Orpic’s Sohar Refinery and aromatics project. The company also undertook a contract to provide design consultancy services for the phase II Civil, Structural and Architectural (CSA) scope of services at the Octal Petrochemical PET Development in Salalah.

Evidence of Atkins formidable skills is seen in the array of tourism, leisure and resort developments that the company has been associated with over the years. One striking example is the Alila Jabal Akhdar Resort Hotel, an 86-key boutique property designed and engineered on the edge of a precipice in the Jabal Akhdar region of the country.

Also attesting to its capabilities is Glorei Muttawar, a seven-storey residential development comprising 370 apartments, 15 retail units and basement car parking that seeks to be the first residential building in Oman set to receive LEED certification. Atkins design incorporates innovative approaches to energy conservation and environmental sustainability, with strong emphasis on passive design combined with active energy reduction and sustainable water and waste management to arrive at a holistic solution. The design for the building draws on strong solar passive architecture and other efficiency initiatives to reduce

its carbon emissions by 18 per cent. The building was named as the Innovative Energy Project for the year 2012 by Construction Week Oman.

Multidisciplinary expertiseBut it’s Atkins role in the development

of an anchor hotel property within the iconic Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) that truly exemplifies the firm’s impressive expertise. The OCEC is the flagship project of Omran, the tourism investment and development arm of the Omani government, and a key pillar of the country’s strategy to position the Sultanate as a hub for MICE holidays. Given its pivotal role in tapping into the multibillion dollar global MICE industry, the OCEC and its individual components are being developed to world-class standards.

Atkins has been awarded a contract to develop a 300-key, five-star Convention Hotel, which will be operated by JW Marriott to form part of the prestigious mixed-use commercial development within the OCEC complex.

“As the anchor hotel, everything about the architectural design had to be outstanding,” said Mr. Marco Malpiedi, Managing Director – Oman Office. “In addition to the detailed architectural design of the hotel, Atkins also undertook the engineering design of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and ICT facilities, as well as the full audiovisual scope. Also as design coordination, we had to work with consultants from all over the world to ensure the project’s delivery to the client’s exacting standards. JW Marriott too had its demanding specs, which we had to incorporate as well.”

Atkins’ forte, Mr. Malpiedi explains, lies in providing end-to-end consultancy and construction supervision support encompassing all stages of a project’s development. “Our diverse capabilities and wealth of experience make us uniquely placed to oversee any large-scale undertaking – the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre, for example – from start to finish. Clients typically turn to Atkins to handle not only the planning and construction management aspects of their projects, but wider social, environmental, and community issues as well. From cost and risk planning, feasibility studies and logistics, to impact assessments and stakeholder engagement activity, we plan every aspect of our clients’ projects. This is in addition to our core expertise in planning and architectural design, project

management, supervision, and so on. We take pride in understanding our clients’ objectives and delivering innovative and holistic solutions. We also specialize in introducing sustainability principles in such projects. The ability to work with a client in delivering the complete suite of consultancy services gets us very excited about such projects.”

Citing the example of The Wave, Muscat – an upscale mixed-use residential and leisure destination near Muscat International Airport – Atkins has been involved in several key aspects of this signature development.

“Atkins continues to play a significant role in the ongoing roll-out of this landmark venture. We had the opportunity to be involved in the marine works design and supervision, geotechnical consultancy, architecture and design for all the townhouses, apartments and villas, design of the waterways and landscaping within the plot boundaries, and so on. The dominant share of the design work was done by Atkins, which demonstrates the breadth of our capabilities.”

Sustainability is a key part of Atkins’ value offering to its clients. A world leader in the delivery of sustainable solutions, Atkins’ projects incorporate the company’s acclaimed carbon critical design philosophy which aims to reduce the carbon footprint of structures. From resorts to sports arenas, civilian buildings to transport networks, sustainability is an integral part of Atkins’s design solutions.

A giant among the Middle East’s engineering and design consultancies,

Atkins has been associated with some of the region’s best-known landmarks and mega infrastructure projects. The list includes iconic structures, such as Burj Al Arab (UAE), Dubai Metro (UAE), Durrat Al Bahrain (Bahrain), Bahrain World Trade Centre (Bahrain), Asian Beach Games (Oman), Doha-Dukhan highway (Qatar), and Makkah Metro (Saudi Arabia). These signature projects attest to the unparalleled engineering and design capabilities of a company that has been an integral part of the region’s development over the last four decades.

Atkins scoops Oman awards

At the recent Construction Week Awards 2014 ceremony, a high profile event that recognizes excellence in Oman’s increasingly vibrant design and construction sector, Atkins Oman scooped two prestigious awards. The Commercial Project of the Year was awarded to Al Marsa Village Centre – designed as part of The Wave, Muscat, by Atkins. Atkins’ Ahmed Zeinelabdin was named Project Manager of the Year.

Construction Week’s editor, Michael Fahy, said: “The Construction Week Oman 2014 awards had the highest number of entries that we’ve received in the event’s three-year history and the projects put forward were of a very high calibre. Our awards winners demonstrate the strength of Oman’s construction market and the talent of the people working in it.”

AEG Ogden’s appointment as venue manager underscores the importance and understanding of the global expertise required to ensure the success of the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre, said Mr. Geoff Donaghy, Group Director, Convention Centres, AEG Ogden.

“The decision to build a world-class convention and exhibition centre such as this is a testament to the vision and commitment by the Oman Government to diversify the economic growth for long-term sustainability and job creation for the Omani community,” Mr. Donaghy stated.

“An essential part of AEG Ogden’s role is to ensure that local staff are trained to world class standards in all aspects of venue management while at the same time ensuring the renowned Omani hospitality that has greeted international visitors for hundreds of years continues and will be a significant point of difference when positioning Oman and the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre to the world,” he further noted.

For the past four years, the globally renowned venue management specialist has been providing global expertise, advice and input during the design of the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center. This is key to ensuring that the development meets

operator requirements and achieves cohesive and efficient operations and the best possible service standards. This advice will also continue during the construction phases, according to the Group Director.

In fact, the challenge of securing major international congresses has already started, said Geoff, pointing out that decision makers typically plan their events four to six years ahead.

AEG Ogden has already begun working closely with the various Omani authorities to identify key areas for global accreditation ahead of the opening of the Centre in late 2016. With more than 200 convention centers worldwide competing to host lucrative world congresses, it is imperative that Oman is showcased as a country that offers business to business opportunities, while highlighting the research and development being undertaken in a number of specialized industries and fields throughout the Sultanate, the Group Director stressed.

AEG Ogden currently manages and operates 18 convention and exhibition centres, arenas, stadia and theatres. The company aims to leverage this international expertise and global knowledge to position Oman as a serious contender on the world stage.

“Where possible, AEG Ogden aims to provide all services in-house at

each venue, including design, sales and marketing, event management, five star food and beverage, human resource management, information technology and full-venue management services including in-house cleaning and security,” said Mr. Donaghy.

AEG Ogden has to its credit an impressive portfolio of projects that demonstrate its superior capabilities in the operation and management of such landmark developments. Dubbed the AEG Ogden “Family of Facilities”, this portfolio comprises convention and exhibition centres, arenas, stadia and performing arts theatres, spanning Australia, Asia and the Middle East. Also, AEG Ogden anticipates announcements in future regarding involvement in new major convention centres in India and China.

The company is in partnership with one of the world’s leading sports and entertainment companies, the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), which owns and operating professional sports teams, promotion and touring companies and major venues including Shanghai’s Mercedes-Benz Arena, London’s O2 Arena and its surrounding O2 precinct, as well as Los Angeles’ Staples Centre and its surrounding entertainment district, LA Live, and recently the Hawaii and Los Angeles Convention Centres.

“AEG Ogden’s successful track record in establishing and maintaining world class venues demonstrates an innate understanding of how to constantly adapt to new, changing and sometimes challenging environments,” he stressed.

Importantly, sustainability principles govern all key aspects of the development of Convention Center project, an objective that falls squarely within AEG Ogden’s field of expertise. In fact, the OCEC project is amongst the first international convention centres to attain the US Green Building Council Leadership in Environment and Energy Design (LEED) new construction rating. LEED is the most globally recognised green building scheme available.

Emphasising the importance of LEED, Mr. Donaghy says: “This is significant as LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health, sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.”

AEG Ogden also has a provisional sustainability strategy that has been reflected in the building design and across all areas of operation for the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre. As in all AEG Ogden operated venues, CSR initiatives have a strong focus with many several concepts being developed for implementation once the Muscat-based office is established.

“AEG Ogden-managed venues are recognised internationally for providing world-class customer service, event operations, catering and associated services for the smallest to the largest event, every time. It is these high standards and reputation for consistently delivering world’s best practice that has seen the Australian headquartered company become the leading venue management company in the Asia Pacific region and the recipient of 285 awards for venue management, catering services and marketing activities since its inception,” Mr. Donaghy added.

AEG Ogden, one of the world’s leading venues

management companies, has been appointed to market, promote and manage the new Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre in both the pre-opening phase and ongoing operation once construction is complete. In addition, AEG Ogden has been heavily involved with the operational design phase for the past four years.

Omran, the country’s appointed master developer, investor and hospitality asset manager, awarded Carillion Alawi a RO78-million package two contract for the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) in October last year. Omran’s Chairman H.E. Nasser bin Khamis Al Jashmi, and Carillion Alawi Managing Director Andy Jones inked the pact that takes Oman one giant leap forward to its goals of becoming a self-reliant global economy.

The proposed scope of work for package two includes a mix of vehicle facilities, provisions for conference and events, building amenities and food outlets. This is an undertaking that Managing Director Andy Jones knows the company to be ‘uniquely qualified’ to take on, given its long-standing reputation for project delivery, safety, quality, value engineering and innovation.

Carillion Alawi will rely on four decades worth of experience and expertise to construct a three-level car parking facility for 4,200 vehicles; exhibition halls with an estimated 22,000 sqm of leasable space, a concourse fully equipped with a main

production kitchen, three cafes, hospitality suites, administration areas, a central landscaped courtyard and two circulation nodes connecting the concourse to the car park.

The scope of the project also extends to the construction of ancillary buildings, which are mainly an energy center that also serves as the district cooling plant for the entire project in addition to a security screening facility, taxi amenity building, waste management building, landscape maintenance building and electrical substation facility.

However, the project’s enormity in scale and size assumes even greater significance as Omran inches closer to unveiling an iconic undertaking that is set to transform tourism and commerce in Oman. In making the judicious decision to construct such a multi-purpose establishment Omran has already set in motion a chain of events that will propel Oman towards its Vision 2020 goals of economic diversification.

Within the OCEC’s concrete columns that rise up and around its 460,000 sqm site lie fertile prospects for growth and immense business opportunity. As it steadily advances towards

completion, the OCEC prepares Oman for a global role in matters of trade, tourism, commerce and business, while at the same time fuelling enterprise and entrepreneurship among local communities. While the center’s 22,000 square metres of column-free exhibition space carry the country’s grand expectations for a highly successful and globally competent conferences business, its fully-integrated precinct replete with five-star facilities are the supporting pillars that hold up Oman as a global contender in the highly competitive market of conferences and exhibitions, not to mention tourism.

An assessment analysis by Booz & Co, estimates that the OCEC will be the architect of a new, progressive economy for Oman by supporting business and tourism, while creating opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the fields of retail, operations, food and beverage, services and transport. The centre, on completion, is expected to be a 600,000-strong crowd-puller for tourism and related activities, annually and provide 120,000 sqm of retail space. That’s not all; a nature

reserve for Oman’s exotic birdlife, parklands and a wadi will be part of the OCEC’s picturesque environs and hold immeasurable appeal for potential tourists.

Carillion Alawi, with its team of experienced personnel already on the job, is working towards a deadline of 20 months, against a scheduled opening of the center in late 2016. The company, which is an associate undertaking of Carillion PLC, UK, boasts a global experience of 80 years. It has built a name for itself as a leader in delivering expert civil engineering solutions and also in terms of project delivery, safety, quality, value engineering, innovation, and risk profiles.

Its strong presence in Oman is further buttressed by a number of high-profile projects - for key clients such as Royal Court Affairs, Zubair Corporation, Petroleum Development Oman, Majid Al Futtaim and The Wave Muscat amongst others. Most recently, in February this year, Carillion Alawi won the RO10 million contract to develop infrastructure for the Saraya Bandar Jissah project that is coming up in Muscat’s East side.

The company prides itself on creating a significant impact and improving the quality of people’s lives for a better tomorrow. Over the four decades that it has been operating in Oman, Carillion Alawi has established a reputation as one of the region’s leading quality contractors delivering total solutions to customers.

The company also has high regard for corporate social responsibility and extends this philosophy to how it does business. Carillion Alawi supports a wide range of environmental, voluntary and school projects such as on-site job centres and a variety of school initiatives. When it comes to health and safety Carillon Alawi has an established Safety System that is certified to OSHAS 18001. The company is also an active participant in Carillion PLC’s ‘Target Zero’ health and safety campaign, the chief objective of which is to spread the message on safety to all levels of staff and management including the company’s supply chain. This ensures zero tolerance for safety infringements so that all accidents are prevented.

For 45 years Carillion Alawi LLC has been the bulwark

of Oman’s construction industry with some major developments to its growing list of credentials. Its extensive knowledge and expertise in building and civil engineering works won the company yet another milestone project for a development that is set to change the face of Oman’s socio-economic milieu as it springboards ahead into progress.

The product of the merger of two major Omani engineering firms – Ibn Khaldun Consulting Engineers and Almadaen Engineering Consults – IKAM engenders pride and confidence in the capabilities of Omani engineering professionals not only to perform well in this highly competitive industry, but to excel as well. IKAM also serves as an edifying example of how two companies can join forces to unlock synergies that can effectively catapult their union into the top echelons of the Sultanate’s vibrant engineering consultancy services industry.

Today, IKAM is a leading engineering consultancy services provider with specialist skills spanning a variety of disciplines, including architecture, structural engineering, urban planning, MEP engineering, infrastructure engineering, transportation engineering, water and wastewater, project management, and the design of roads, airports, ports and harbours. The breadth of its experience is attested by the successful delivery of numerous projects across all these disciplines over the 30-plus years of existence in Oman – pre-merger and post-merger.

The list includes several landmark and high-profile undertakings such as the Tilal Complex in Muscat, the headquarters of the Export Credit Guarantee Agency of Oman (ECGA), the upscale Glori Maktabi-2 building

in Wattayah, the Military Hospital in Salalah, the wholesale fish market in Al Felaij, contracts for Duqm Airport and SOHAR Port, and Al-Hallaniyat Island port and infrastructure project.

A prestigious addition to IKAM’s growing client base is Omran, which is implementing, among things, the iconic Oman Convention & Exhibition Center (OCEC) at Airport Heights. A partnership of IKAM and Arabtech Jardanech has been awarded a consultancy contract by Omran for the design and supervision of the Hotel-2 project – a 4-star property that will be operated and managed by the Crowne

Plaza chain. The award is a robust affirmation

of IKAM’s standing as one of Oman’s most prominent engineering consultants. After all, only the finest among contenders for various contracts related to the ambitious project, ultimately make the cut. IKAM’s proven track record in the delivery of high quality and complex projects was a key factor in its selection, alongside Arabtech Jardanech, as the design and supervision consultants for this hotel project.

In addition to serving as the

Architect of Record, IKAM also undertook the structural design of the hotel project, and will provide full construction supervision services as well. As with all of its projects, the company is committed to bringing its considerable expertise and resources to bear on the successful delivery of this project.

IKAM continues to leverage its professional capabilities, longstanding experience and unique market insight to grow its order-book. The future is bright for this growth-conscious company as it aggressively competes for business – government and private sector alike.

But underpinning its continued success is the joint leadership provided by two engineering professionals whose wise decisions, 15 years ago, led to the creation of one of Oman’s most promising engineering consultancy firms.

Both were industry stalwarts in their own right: Mussallam Qatan, who established Ibn Khaldun Consulting Engineers in 1981, earned a BSc Degree in Civil Engineering from New Haven University, USA. Earlier, he had held a number of senior-level engineering positions in the government sector, overseeing the management of large infrastructure projects.

Fellow compatriot Fuad Al Kindi, who set up AlMadaen Engineering Consultants in 1991, studied at various prestigious institutions, earning a B.Sc. Arch. Engineering degree from University of Miami, USA, and a M.Sc. Mech. Engineering degree from the University of London, UK. His previous experience included stints as an engineering professional in the Omani government sector where he supervised and managed a number of high-profile palace projects and infrastructure schemes.

Since their formal merger in 1997, Ibn Khaldun . Almadaen Engineering Consultants has expanded its footprint across Oman. The company now operates branches in Salalah and Duqm, while overseeing its growing operations from its head office in Muscat.

“Swissboring has been involved in all major and prestigious projects in Oman related to geotechnical engineering. The geotechnical investigation operations carried out at the Oman Convention and Execution Centre is one of the most important projects for our Soil Investigation Department,” says Mr. Salvatore Miranda, Structural and Geotechnical Engineer, Swissboring.

The company has been awarded three different Contracts for geotechnical and geological site investigation of the OCEC. The contracts have been awarded in different phases involving preliminary site investigation and detailed investigation for specifically

planned structures such as hotels, main buildings, infrastructure installation, grid stations, substations and the like.

“The scope of the executed site investigation was to assess the general ground conditions of the site, in order to ascertain the nature and properties of soil/rock available at different locations of site at various depths and recommend foundation for the proposed structures and for other design requirements,” says Mr. Miranda.

While Swissboring has played a fundamental role in laying a solid basis for many of Oman’s major infrastructural projects, the

company’s contract with the OCEC is one of the most important for its Soil Investigation Department, according to Mr. Miranda.

In fact, Swissboring first caught the attention of the contractors’ market for its geotechnical investigative expertise, leading up to its stellar reputation and appellation as a Soil Investigation Agency.

A 30-year partnershipSwitzerland based Swissboring

Overseas Corporation Ltd, has had a long and productive relationship with the Sultanate that spans three decades. The company’s Oman branch was set up in 1984 with soil investigation as its main activity.

Gradually, it added other ground engineering operations to growing field of specialisations, such as piling, diaphragm walls, shoring, ground anchors, micropiling and soil improvement, while continuing to anchor its presence in geotechnical investigation.

In Oman, the company has garnered a nationwide reputation for its work the field of soil investigation, with number of prestigious projects to its name. Foremost among these is Geotechnical Investigation and Execution of Piling Foundations for the new MuscatInternationalAirport. “We have successfully carried out the preliminary and detailed geotechnical studies for the entire development of MuscatInternationalAirport. We have also performed pile foundations in various packages such as MC2, MC3, MC4, ATC Tower and MC13,” says Mr. Miranda.

Swissboring has also conducted preliminary geotechnical studies for the entire development of Salalah International Airport; soil investigation and construction of pile foundations for the Oman Royal Opera House, Muscat Expressway and Batinah Expressway projects; Ground Improvement by Cavity Grouting and Execution of Piling Foundations for the Sur Independent Power Project (IPP); and geotechnical studies and site assessment for the Duqm refinery project.

Apart from underscoring the company’s well-established presence in the Sultanate, these projects are also illustrative of its critical role in some of Oman’s landmark achievements through the decades.

The contract with the OCEC joins other prestigious projects that Swissboring has undertaken for OMRAN. Among these is its extensive geotechnical investigation of the site for the proposed Duqm beach hotel and for the Asian beach games; platform construction package at Wudam Al Sahel and geotechnical investigation for the Muscat City Hotels project at Shatti Al Qurm.

Swissboring Overseas Corporation Ltd,

member of the Italy-based TREVI Group of Companies, has been doing important ground work for several of Oman’s infrastructural projects in fields relating to geotechnical studies and soil investigation. Its most recent contract with OMRAN – the Sultanate’s tourism development arm – to conduct site investigation assessments for the country’s multi-million Rial Oman Convention and Exhibitions Center (OCEC) – is testimony to the company’s growth as a specialist in its field.

In the wider MENA region, however, Kuwait-based SSH is a well-established player backed by over 52 years of expertise in architecture, engineering and planning. Established in 1961, the company has since grown by leaps and bounds in both reputation and turnover. It now features among the top 100 global consultancies in rankings compiled by the renowned World Architecture Magazine, and among the top 10 in the MENA region.

“SSH has built for itself an impressive track record in the successful delivery of complex construction projects, designed and supervised to world-class standards. Backed by a multinational team of professionals with solid experience in the region, we bring to the table an unmatched combination of expertise that guarantees high standards of quality and value to our customers,” said Mr. Danny Warde, Resident Director – Oman.

That reputation is attested by its success in bagging a number of prestigious contracts in the Sultanate, most notably as the Engineering and Architectural Design and Construction Supervision Consultant for two key components of Omran’s flagship Oman Convention and Exhibition Center (OCEC) project. Conceived as part of OCEC’s Phase 1 development, these components relate to the design and construction of the Exhibition Centre, Multi-Storey Car Park and Energy Centre (officially referred to as Package 2) and the main auditorium (known as Package3).

Already, SSH has made significant headway in the delivery of these packages. Package 2, designed by SSH, was recently awarded to well-known construction firm Carillion Alawi. SSH has mobilised a team to supervise

the construction of this package to the exacting requirements of Omran. Furthermore, design work on Package 3, comprising the main auditorium, has been completed and will soon go out to tender. Both packages are slated for completion and delivery in the next couple of years

In awarding the two packages to SSH, Omran took into account the company’s long history in successfully delivering substantive and complex projects similar to the OCEC, says Mr Warde.

“Representatives from Omran had a first-hand look at some of the landmark projects that we’ve undertaken, as well as presently handling, in the region, particularly in Kuwait.

One such project is Kuwait University’s Sabah Al-Salem $7 Billion University City Campus established on a built up area of 3.7 million square meters.

In 2005 Kuwait University engaged SSH alongside an array of international consultants to undertake the planning and development of the Master Plan for the new University City and ensure timely delivery of this massive and complex undertaking. SSH was then appointed to provide full design and construction supervision of the infrastructure works in the Main Campus area.

Since the Omran contract, as well as an earlier design and supervision package for the iconic Royal Opera House Muscat’s shopping centre and car park, SSH has seen its Oman portfolio swell. Over the last 4 years, the company’s footprint has been established winning market entry contracts and servicing key customers in the property market. The Oman office is now handling around a dozen projects for a mix of government, public and private sector clients. They include the complete design package for a pair

of boutique hotels and an eco-friendly resort that are signature properties that promise to add an element of refined luxury to Oman’s hospitality offerings.

Private sector developers also constitute a significant part of SSH’s expanding clientele in the Sultanate, according to Mr. Warde.

The company’s services have been engaged to prepare a master-plan for a large mixed use development in Barka, comprising commercial and residential components, and a marina as well. Leading Omani business groups have also retained the services of SSH in the design of commercial and leisure development in Muscat Governorate.

The company profile has been continuously growing in Oman culminating in SSH winning the 2012 first prize for Future Projects Leisure Led-Development Category in the WAF (World Architecture Festival), Singapore.

These successes have helped vindicate SSH’s decision to establish its first overseas office in the Sultanate of Oman, says Mr. Warde. “In 2008,

our stakeholders decided that Oman would be the first territory outside of Kuwait to have a presence on the ground. That was when I personally came to Muscat to help establish a footprint for SSH in Oman. A year later, in February 2009, we secured our trading license to offer architectural and engineering services in the Sultanate.”

SSH has since expanded its presence across the Middle East and African regions. Full-fledged offices have been established in Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Algeria and South Africa and most recently Erbil in Kurdistan, with plans afoot to grow this footprint in the coming years.

To help drive this international growth, SSH recently signed up a high-calibre team of design professionals led by industry veteran Bob Hope. Prior to his appointment as CEO of SSH, Mr. Hope headed the operations of Atkins in the Northern Gulf. Backed by 15 years of experience in the Middle East, the new CEO’s mandate is to position the company for a period of ambitious growth in markets across the MENA region.

Although a relatively new entrant in the domestic market, SSH has made impressive strides in establishing itself as a serious contender for a

significant share of Oman’s lucrative architectural and engineering services business.

In the short space of four years since it obtained a license to operate in the Sultanate, SSH has already garnered a sizable portfolio of contracts that promises to position the company for strong growth in the years ahead.

A formidable new kid on the block

With this capacity, the Energy Centre will not only meet the cooling needs of the convention hall, hotels, Business Park, retail areas, and so on, but also cater for future expansions as well.

Equally substantive is the scope of the electrical package. It comprises 11KV/415V transformers, standby power generating sets, 415V electrical installations, specialized lighting systems, specialist low current systems, audio-video equipment,

SMATV, and security and access control systems.

Besides, there is a sizable Public Health component incorporated into the contract. It comprises, among other things, a state-of-the-art solar powered hot water generating system, fire alarm and fire protection system, and hot and cold water supply.

Under a separate contract, BEG will build a 3X 20MVA Primary Substation (33/11KV) to cater to the power requirements of the entire development.

Significantly, the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre package is the latest in a growing portfolio of prestigious contracts currently in various stages of implementation by BEG. Notable are the Muscat International Airport (MC1) infrastructure and utilities package; Muscat International Airport (MC3) MEP works for Passenger Terminal Building, Forecourt, Multi Level Car Park etc; Salalah International Airport (MC5) package for air-conditioning works; Residential

& Commercial Development at Baushar for Public Authority for Social Insurance (PASI); Majlis Oman building; Muscat and Qurum City Centre expansion and cinema halls project; Car showrooms and corporate offices at Wattayah for Oman Trading Establishment; and Manufacturing facilities and corporate offices for UES at Rusayl.

The company has also successfully executed projects related to a number of high-profile developments, including the Al Masarra Hospital at Al Amerat; Salalah Gardens Mall, Royal Opera House Muscat, Duqm Frontier Town, Oman Arab Bank headquarters; the new Radio & TV Studios at Qurum, Sur 220KV Power Station and the 132/33KV Substation and Transmission System at Yiti etc.

Given the strategic and economic importance of the great majority of these projects to Oman’s national developmental goals, BEG has always been a part of select handful of companies that have been at the heart of the nation-building process in the Sultanate. Indeed, BEG is the only company in the MEP sector that integrates multiple disciplines under one umbrella.

BEG’s longstanding success in this field is a commitment to delivering projects that not only meet, but surpass, the expectations of clients. A proven track record of having delivered the most demanding projects of diverse complexities to exacting standards, coupled with our professional set-up, technical expertise, facilities and manpower resources, sets BEG apart from their competitors. BEG bring to the table extensive local knowledge, a proactive approach, and a robust after-sales service commitment extending not only during the construction phase, but also during the defects liability period and beyond.” BEG always accords priority to the development of national youth & is committed to Omanization.

If business success is defined by the size of a company’s order book and the complexity of the projects it undertakes, then Bahwan Engineering Group (BEG) stands head and shoulders above its peers. This is evident

from its track record in delivering a large number of high-profile integrated engineering and construction projects both within and outside Oman. Many of these projects are landmarks in their own right, attesting to the formidable capabilities of a company that is acknowledged today as a frontrunner in the Sultanate’s engineering construction sector. Over the years, BEG has built up an impressive portfolio of engineering contracts associated with the implementation of some of Oman’s – and indeed the region’s – best-known engineering and infrastructure developments. The list includes Muscat International Airport (Under Execution), Oman LNG (Train I & II), Qalhat LNG (Train III), Sohar Seawater intake and return system, Al Aweer Power Station (UAE), Sohar Power & Desalination Plant, Sohar Fertilizer Plant, Barka and Sohar (220KV) Power Development, Saih Rawl Depletion Compression Project etc,.

Stepping stone to greater success

As Omran’s Lead Consultant for Hotel 2 – since branded a Crowne Plaza property of Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) – AJI is responsible for the delivery of the complete package of architectural design services. In this regard, the company has partnered with UK-based Tom Russell Architects, whose founder Mr. Tom Russell was the Main Designer for one of Oman’s finest landmarks, the Royal Opera House Muscat.

As part of its wide-ranging remit, AJI is also responsible for the development of full Structural Design services, complete Mechanical and Electrical Design services, Interior Design services, as well as soft and hard landscaping. Included in the scope of its contract is the provision of all other specialized services, such as kitchen and Laundry design, Acoustics, Audiovisual, Fire Engineering, Life Safety, and Spa and Health Club Design. Rounding off this list of responsibilities is the provision of construction supervision services when work on the property commences in the first quarter of 2014.

“This is a significant contract indeed, coming as it does from Omran, the Omani government’s tourism development and investment arm,” commented Mr. Bitar – Managing Director- Clients and Markets at AJI. “Arabtech Jardeneh International is proud to be associated with the development of a project as prestigious as the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center, which serves as a cornerstone of the Sultanate’s integrated tourism development strategy. The award represents our maiden contract in Oman and serves as a stepping stone to the lucrative business opportunities that abound in this increasingly vibrant Gulf market.”

Eager to enhance its presence in the Oman market, AJI since opened a full-fledged office in the Sultanate. On the heels of that development, it was awarded a contract to provide Lead Consultancy Services for the design and supervision of a new Intercontinental Hotel planned as part of the Muscat Hills development in Airports Heights, adjacent to the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center development. Buoyed by this latest success, AJI has now

launched the process of setting up a local limited liability company in Muscat as it prepares to grow its presence in the Sultanate.

Significantly, Oman is the latest addition to AJI’s expanding footprint in the MENA region. Amman-headquartered Arabtech Jardaneh already boasts a network of registered offices in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Yemen, Libya, Iraq, and Palestine. The company also has a number of high profile projects to its name in Sudan, Algeria, Syria, Mauritania, Morocco, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.

Backed by nearly 50 years of experience and over 550 multinational engineers and architects, Arabtech Jardaneh International has evolved into a one stop-shop for architecture, engineering, infrastructure, environmental consultancy services and construction supervision services.

In recognition of its growing reputation in the field of engineering consultancy, the renowned American magazine, ENR (Engineering News Record), ranked Arabtech Jardaneh among the world’s top 200 design firms in 2010, 2011, and 2012 and among the top six engineering firms of the Arab region. Today, AJI continues to enjoy a distinguished position in these coveted rankings.

Underpinning AJI’s continuing success is the sheer breadth of its expertise encompassing all aspects of architectural and engineering design services. This unrivalled capability is evident in the impressive and diverse portfolio of projects that it has to its name, spanning tourism and hospitality (more than 1,750,000 sqm), healthcare (more than 9,000 beds in all), pharmaceuticals (more than 600,000 sqm), industrial plants (more than 400,000 sqm), educational facilities (more than 530,000 sqm), residential schemes (450,000 sqm), banks (250,000 sqm), roads and

highways (7,500 km), bridges (60,000 sqm) and water and wastewater solutions (benefiting over 10 million people.)

But its forte lies in the hospitality sector, as attested by the many examples of landmark hotels and resorts in the region that bear AJI’s classic design imprint. The firm has handled the design and supervision of more a dozen prominent hotels, having also worked with most of the leading 5-star hotel operators in the region. Notable are the 200-room Four Seasons Amman in Jordan, the 285-room Hilton on the Dead Sea, and the luxury Saint Regis hotel and apartment complex in Amman.

As a design consultant to the Intercontinental brand in Bethlehem, AJI also led the breathtaking transformation of the historical Jassir Palace into a majestic 5-star property. Furthermore, the Group has provided engineering services to a number of large-scale tourism developments, including the 3.2 million sqm Marsa Zayed Development, the sprawling Ayla Development that includes 75 hectares of manmade lagoons, earthworks, infrastructure, hard landscaping, and marine works, and many others in the region.

Importantly, AJI’s robust appeal to customers in the region stems in part from its eagerness to form partnerships and alliances with reputed consultants from elsewhere around the world, including the USA, UK, Canada, Norway, Germany, France and Singapore.

“Our excellent working relationships have developed over time,” says Mr Awwad- International Operations and Marketing Director at AJI “We consider this to be one of our strengths as it enables us to delve into a spectrum of opportunities in a way that helps us serve our clients in the best way possible by forming strong, experienced and specialized project organizations and contractual relationships that ultimately help drive the smooth and timely delivery of our projects.”

Leading regional engineering and architecture consultancy firm Arabtech Jardaneh International (AJI) made its formal debut in the

Sultanate of Oman in 2011 when it was appointed Lead Consultant by Omran for Hotel-2 of the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center project.AJI’s selection for the prestigious contract - in the face of stiff competition from an array of topnotch international architectural and engineering firms - was a signal triumph from two key standpoints. Firstly, it attested to the company’s superior technical skills and proven experience in the field of hospitality and leisure projects, as exemplified by the numerous high-profile ventures it has undertaken across the Gulf and MENA region. Secondly, it marked the company’s maiden foray into the booming Omani market.

Gearing for new contracting challenges

It was this wealth of expertise that held Al Habib in good stead when it bid for – and successfully won – a contract for the provision of a large package of utility services as part of Omran’s prestigious Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre project.

Welcoming the award of the contract to Al Habib & Co, Mr. Vijaya Kumar, General Manager – Contracting Services, said: “It is indeed an honour for any contractor to be part of a project as prestigious and distinctive as the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre. This contract inspires us to take on ever bigger challenges in line with our growth ambitions.”

During the one-year-long contract period, Al Habib will be required to install an array of utilities that will underpin the Centre’s smooth and successful operation when it is eventually launched. It includes 3.1km of chilled water piping up to 1000 mm dia, 11km of potable water and irrigation network up to 560mm dia, 4.1km of wastewater network, 8.6km of telecom network, 33km

of 11KV & 33KV networks, 6km of LV network, and 5.8km of street lighting cabling with decorative poles. Also as part of its brief, the contractor will provide a pump house, room for standby generator, and electrical substations.

Importantly, the varied scope of the package pays testimony to the superior skills and expertise of Al Habib in executing such complex contracts, Mr. Kumar says. “The Utility Services contract, currently being executed by Al Habib, will cater to the needs of the entire convention centre project, which is one of the biggest ongoing civil projects in the GCC. For a single contractor to undertake this multi-faceted contract – spanning electrical, chilled water, potable water, irrigation, wastewater and civil construction – is a demonstration of its unique capabilities in these fields.”

Significantly, the Omran contract is the latest in an expanding portfolio of projects undertaken by Al Habib over the past two decades. In addition to a large number of electrical projects

of up to 33KV, the company has also built storage tanks and water supply lines to various villages in Dhofar Governorate, water supply links to the Muwailah neighbourhood of Sohar, water transmission line to Sohar Industrial Estate, and water distribution networks for new planned areas in Liwa, Abu Mudhaibi in Haima and Rawda at Al Buraimi.

Among its many prestigious clients are Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC), Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAECO), Dhofar Power Company (DPC), Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education.

Al Habib’s track record in the successful delivery of time-bound, fast-track projects has been recognized through a number of awards and citations. “We were honoured with the Best Performer Award from MEDC Zone-2 for the year 2012. Earlier, in 2010, Al Habib was conferred the Best Performer Award from DPC for the fast-track completion of its Summer Mitigation, Part C2, C11 and C12 projects in record time.”

Following the integration of all its different divisions under one roof in the late 1990s, Al Habib has succeeded in positioning itself as one of Oman’s fast-growing civil contracting companies. Buoyed by its success in the northern half of the country, the company opened an office in Salalah to capitalise on opportunities in the booming construction market of Dhofar Governorate. It now boasts a fully fledged operational base to support its activities in the south of the country.

Eager to tap opportunities in the water supply sector, Al Habib made a foray into this promising field in 2008. A year later, it secured registration with the Tender Board as an excellent grade contractor in the water supply services sector. Backed by full-fledged base camps in Muscat and Salalah, and complemented by dedicated carpentry, aluminium fabrication and steel fabrication workshops, Al Habib has grown into a front ranked player in the Omani contracting business with a 1,800-strong workforce.

Delivering excellence in road infrastructure development

KAS has recently bagged the contract for the Dualization of Bidbid – Sur Road Part 2 of Section II from Al Kamil to Sur with a total length of 52 km for a value of RO 91.3 million. The scope includes upgrading of the road to a three-lane dual carriageway.

One of the ongoing contracts is the Design & Construction of an Interchange connecting Muscat International Airport from Al Jamma Al Akhbar and Dualization of Al Murthafa Street, Phase 1. Another challenging job the company is executing and is nearing completion is the Wadi Hilty road in the Wilayat of Sohar. The road is being built across challenging terrain and required the construction of many bridges where the alignment intersects wadis.

These projects, among scores of other road ventures, testify to the commendable capabilities of KAS in the field of road construction. Over the 13 years since its inception, KAS has executed road projects aggregating over 1,000 kilometers in length including road networks in some of the toughest terrain within the Sultanate.

This remarkable capability has endeared KAS to its clients such as the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources, Muscat Municipality, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and others.

KAS added OMRAN (the tourism development and investment arm of the Omani Government) to their prestigious clientele, by winning a contract for providing utilities and infrastructure at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Center.

Commenting on the significance of this contract for KAS, Mr N Surendra Kumar, Managing Director said: “We are extremely proud to be associated with the Convention Center project and this is our very first project with OMRAN. This contract awarded affirms OMRAN’s confidence in our ability to undertake infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges, drainage system and other utilities complying with the highest standards of Quality, Health, Safety and Environment.”

KAS has made Road Design and

Construction its principal domain, with decade-long experience and expertise encompassing all aspects of the road building sector.

The Company has acquired extensive resources to meet the needs of the business. Asphalt plants in Ibri, Sohar, Muscat and Sinaw produce asphalt for its own requirements as well as for other customers. State of the art concrete batching plants at Wadi Hilty, Al Murry and Sinaw with a fleet of supporting equipment like concrete pump and transit mixers provide for the requirements of concrete to those projects. Crushing plants at Wadi Hilty and Sinaw produce aggregates for the project requirements. The company also owns a large fleet of heavy earthmoving equipment, manned by well-experienced crew.

KAS has earned a solid reputation in providing all forms of Road Signage solutions with constant innovative approaches in Road Surface Marking technologies.

The highest degree of efficiency with which KAS undertakes the ancillary

structures and protection works of road construction displays the overall expertise in the field. Bridges, culverts, pedestrian underpasses, Irish crossings, rigid pavements, retaining walls etc. are constructed to the best industry standards. The design wing of KAS is capable of meeting most of the company’s project design requirements in-house.

KAS places a strong emphasis on quality in the execution of its projects. This stems from a desire to exceed the client’s expectations. KAS is accredited with ISO 9001-2008, the ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 certifications. These accreditations put KAS in the unique position of being one of the few companies in the Sultanate of Oman, specifically within the construction industry to have all the three certifications. These credentials combined with our commitment to sustainability, Corporate Social Responsibility and QHSE; ensure that our activities are in line with the best international practice.

Khalid Bin Ahmed & Sons LLC, better

known as KAS, is one of the leading road constructions companies. Established in 2000, the company has over the years, built a solid reputation for itself. Timely completion of numerous road projects that KAS has executed bear testimony to its commitment in delivering excellence.

Reducing costs without compromising safety

“The Oman Exhibition and Convention Centre was one of Tenable’s first projects and highlighted the company’s quality assurance by working with a team of dedicated and international team of consultants to offer the highest standard of service. Currently, Tenable Fire Engineering Consultancy are contracted for the duration of the project until it reaches 100% completion,” says Mr. Sultan Al Maskri, Director, Tenable Fire Engineering Consultancy.

One of the company’s biggest projects and Oman’s biggest tourism venture, the OCEC is being designed to tap into the potential of the lucrative events and conferences sector. It is expected to give Oman a competitive edge on an international scale and assist the country’s goals of economic diversification. The fully integrated complex spread across two million square meters is scheduled for completion in 2016. It is expected to attract 600,000 visitors annually by 2018 and generate between 15,000 and 18,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2030.

The OCEC project is hailed among the first of its kind in Oman to be built in compliance with LEED

Certification requirements set by the US Green Building Council. Among its many state-of-the-art and sophisticated features are a multi-tiered auditorium, a 22,000-sqm exhibition hall, VIP pavilion, a sprawling food court, multi-storey car park with a capacity of more than 4,000 vehicles, a regional mall, four star hotels, a business park and much more. The precinct is also set to soon headquarter some of the country’s leading companies. Telecom giant, Omantel for instance, recently inked an MoU with Omran to construct the company’s new headquarters at the OCEC.

Going by the monumental scale of the project, Tenable Fire Engineering Consultancy had to draw on some of its most technologically advanced expertise and know-how. And thanks to the company’s global experience it saved the project RO2 million worth of construction fees. On how significant the project is, Mr. Al Maskri says, “The contract itself is significant to Tenable Fire Engineering Consultancy. OCEC is a prestigious project and put Tenable in a strong position in the consultancy market.”

Although the OCEC is a massive project by sheer virtue of its enormous scale and size, Tenable is no stranger to projects of high value and infrastructural significance. Its impressive credentials receive the backing of numerous prestigious clients all across Oman. “Tenable has been involved in a large amount of projects over the years, ultimately resulting in obtaining ROP CD approvals,” says Mr. Al Maskri. Some of these include Muscat International Airport to ensure that the fire engineering aspects of the building are in compliance with NFPA design standards ROP fire regulations. “TFEC is reviewing the fire and life safety aspects, its fire-fighting design layouts and fire detection and alarm system designs that have been proposed for the building. In addition, the contractors were also requiring the consultant to undertake fire and life safety supervision services to ensure all is in accordance to relevant design standards,” says Mr. Al Maskri.

The company was also contracted to review the design and provide fire and safety analysis for the Kempinski hotel, Phase-2 Dubai; assist clients in all ROP Civil

Defense matters within the Sur IPP, including site supervision services; and site supervision testing and commissioning for MEP systems during the construction of the Ritz Carlton.

Apart from the OCEC other Tenable’s other projects for Omran include OCEC Hotel 1 and 2, Jebel Akhdar Resort and the Asian Beach Games. “The broad scope of work consists mainly of obtaining ROP civil defense approvals along with assisting in site supervisions, testing and commissioning of fire safety assets and ensuring everything is in accordance with the relevant NFPA code/standard and ROP Civil Defense,” explains Mr. Al Maskri.

Over the years Tenable Fire Engineering Consultancy has grown its reputation as world leading specialists in fire safety consulting and design. “We provide intelligent design solutions that improve design flexibility, reduce design risks by obtaining early civil defense approvals and reduce construction costs without compromising safety. We accomplish this by proactively applying latest fire engineering technologies and practices into architectural designs,” emphasises Mr. Al Maskri.

The company’s operational girth spans the entire length and breadth of the world from the US, Asia to Europe and the Middle East. It has the requisite expertise and know-how to design the following codes – National Fire Protection Association (NFPA); International Building Codes (IBC) and UK Approved Document B and BS9999. Its team of fire engineers has extensive experience in designing across a wide range of sectors – retail; hospitality; high-rise and aviation. “We actively engage with leading experts at universities, government organisations, fire authorities and code & design guide writing bodies. This ensures that our designs are at the cutting edge of the fire profession,” says Mr. Al Maskri.

The globally renowned Tenable Fire Engineering

Consultancy firm has been appointed by the Omran, the tourism development arm of the government to provide the necessary fire and life safety analysis of the approved development of the Oman Conventions and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) and assist in the production of the required documentation to facilitate Civil Defense Approvals.

Breaking new ground in Oman’s construction industry

Since then, Al Awazi International has enjoyed the privilege of being one of the first local contractors to be directly involved in important groundwork for the OCEC by paving the way for the centre’s construction. Since breaking ground on the project, the company

didn’t miss a beat, progressing right on to preparing the stipulated area of 460,000 sqm with laying of internal roads and enabling works. It finished in record time with zero incidents thanks to its stringent safety protocols and procedures.

Clearing the path for a world class center

In successfully completing excavation and enabling works at the OCEC site, Al Awazi International has made way for the creation of a world class events center. This has long been the dream and vision of the Sultanate and forms part of its economic goals of placing Oman in the big league of events and conferences host countries. Scheduled for completion in late 2016, the OCEC is a fully integrated business and events establishment located a mere four kilometers from Muscat International Airport.

Apart from being the first of its kind in the Sultanate, the facility also represents Oman’s long-cherished dream to be globally on par with meeting the standards for a leading-edge, extremely sophisticated business convention centre.

The OCEC is billed as one of Oman’s most architecturally advanced feat with a design that is being built to meet rigorous LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. Seamlessly flowing, capacious meetings spaces cater to the high expectations of discerning events’ organisers. The Centre will feature an elaborate tiered auditorium to seat 3,200 while the exhibition halls will feature 22,000 square metres of column-free exhibition space.

To meet the demands of distinguished global organisers, sophisticated and up-to-date communications technology has been incorporated into the building’s flexible and functional design. Halls 1 and 2 will have a superior fit out, specialised acoustic treatment, advanced lighting and rigging requirements. They will have a combined seating capacity of 10,000 and will function as a multi-purpose space for plenary sessions, concerts, performances and festive events on a larger scale.

The Centre will also include an additional 14 meeting rooms for 70-

360 delegates, two well-appointed ballrooms to seat up to 2,360, VIP Pavilion, a spacious food-court and a multi-storey carpark with space for 4,000 vehicles.

Within its precincts the centre will provide every aspect of modern and advanced infrastructure characteristic of a world class facility and venue for international, regional and local events. A five star hotel, two four star and three star hotel and apartments will house guests in comfort and style.

Al Awazi International – Proving its mettle

With the OCEC’s emphasis on world class standards, apart from involving local businesses, a homegrown company like Al Awazi International was the perfect choice to raise the curtain on construction and site works.

Since its inception in 2006, the company has made a name for itself in all kinds of construction relating to road works, earth works, land reclamation, enabling works and land surveying works.

The company boasts an impressive phalanx of the most technology efficient and state-of-the-art earth moving equipment, not to mention a team of highly-skilled professionals. In fact, it clocked in one million safety hours with zero safety hazards during its enabling works on the OCEC construction site.

While it may be a fairly new entrant to the construction scene, the company has built an excellent track record for itself in the industry. On its portfolio is an impressive list of clients from ministries, government institutions and major businesses. Some of the company’s projects include site preparation and enabling works for Majlis Oman (Parliament House) Al Bustan for the Diwanof the Royal Court; construction of road at MadinatIlam for the Royal Office; construction of internal roads at Wadi Al Arabeen for the Royal Court Affairs; and site preparation and enabling works for the Research Council at the Sultan Qaboos University.

The Sultanate’s upcoming convention and exhibition center is being recognised as much for its world class business facilities as it is now known for being a well-

spring of opportunity, particularly for local businesses. One such is the fairly new, yet fiercely formidable Al Awazi International Company. In fact, when the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) made the move from drawing board to designated site, Al Awazi International topped the list of contenders for the centre’s Phase-I tenders. The company made the cut among stiff competition, and, in October 2011, was awarded a RO 4.50 million contract for site preparation and enabling works.
