OCEAN WAVES NEWS

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hi Everyone,

I have to start this letter saying how much I enjoyed the Girl Scout presentation. We have to thank April for coming up with the idea and Sharon for doing a good job of presenting it. I hope the Girl Scouts enjoyed it as much as we did. They all did a great job.

We are looking for someone to make phone calls to find out how much it would cost to rent a bus to take us to Rockledge and also get info for a quilting retreat. Then if we get a volunteer to take hold and follow through with the plans and any arrangements, we would be able to do something different.

I think one of the favorite parts of our meeting is Show and Help. Each

quilt is prettier then the next. I encourage all our members to bring in what they have done. Don't be shy to show us. We all learn something from each quilt, and they also stimulate us to go home and start quilting. I don't know about anyone else, but I need stimulation every now and then.

Yvonne and Molly came to the board meeting and told us of all the things they had accomplished including finding different restaurants for the 2015 Installation Luncheon. It all sounded good, but I will let them tell you all about it at a later date.

Remember, Spring is just around the corner. I just wish we could tell. See you in April.

PROGRAM NEWS APRIL ATLAS, 2014 VP PROGRAMMING

March: We really enjoyed the Girl Scout Program by Sharon Krutulis, meeting the charming girls and their leaders, and learning about their sewing-related work.

A BIG Thank You goes to the dedicated members

who generously donated time and effort to provide Member Demonstrations: Joyce Cotner - Methods and materials using fusibles and sharing the Quilts of Valor program; Lynn Kern - Machine appliqué methods; Gerry Tucker - Cutting & sewing 1/4 inch seams; Kasha Abbott-- sewing machine maintenance; Magella Sauve- creating Yo-yos by hand; and Lois Erickson- paper-piecing.

April: The guild business meeting will be short to

accommodate the lecture and demonstration by guest Leigh E. MacDonald. Learn her methods for cutting and sewing circles in eight creative projects, ranging from wall hangings to twin-size quilts in both contemporary and traditional designs. Leigh will share tips on machine appliquéing circles, and fun ways to embellish with threads, decorative fabrics, and beads. Copies of this book will be available for purchase from the author, who

resides in Broward County. You may visit her website and blog at http://www.adventuresinquilting.com/.

On Saturday, Leigh will teach “Color Theory” a half-

day class 1:30 – 4:30 This workshop is about using color in quilts, demystifying color terms such as value, tone, tint, shade, as well as how to use the color wheel. Informative handouts and explanations will provide students with a foundation of color theory. Students will create paper and fabric examples of quilt blocks. Bring a 3-ring binder to create a personal color workbook for use in future quilt-making. No sewing. There are only six spaces left, so to reserve your spot please send a check (payable to Ocean Waves for $35) to April Atlas, 5961 SW 87th Street, South Miami 33143 ASAP.

May: Celebrate Ocean Waves Membership and Small Groups. Chapter Quilt drawing.

June: Community Quilts program; presentation of video "Empowering Women One Quilt at a Time" from PBS series, "Why Quilts Matter."

July: Presentation video "Quilts Bring History Alive" from PBS series. Members Sally Bartelt and Lois Erickson teach a Workshop using fabric exchange strips.

August: Kathy Stubbs Ward, guest lecturer "Judging, What's It All About?" The former judge of our QuiltFest, teaches a half-day Saturday afternoon workshop, and full-day workshop on Sunday.

ANNOUNCING THE COMING OF OCEAN WAVES’ ORPHAN BLOCK

BASKET Geri Tucker and Lois Erickson

-

How many times have you taken a class, made one - maybe two blocks and just didn’t do anything else with it? Now it is sitting in your closet alone and feeling left out. Every time you come across it you think – Now what can I DO with this beautiful block? You touch it, remember the class you took when you made it and just put it back on the shelf. How would you like extra room in our closets for more fabric and new projects? Well - we have JUST THE SPOT for all those ‘Orphan Blocks’ you just can’t toss because they are so pretty, or I’m glad I learned that technique, but never again – orphan blocks.

We will have a special basket on the Community Quilt table for the next several months for all of us to bring those orphan blocks to find a new home. So check out those closets and drawers, I’ll bet you’ll find some orphans who are looking for a new home where they will find someone to love, keep warm and cuddled in.

HOSPITALITY Joan Vigil

I hope everyone enjoyed the meeting in March and all

those great demos. No complaints about the food either. This coming month, April, the people with last names starting with the letters S, T, U, V, W, X, Y and Z will be in charge of the refreshments. We are doing a great job with serving salads and sandwiches and cutting back on the sweets. Water is becoming the favorite cold drink. We must be listening to our doctors. However, Phyllis has a good idea - Cranberry juice. Thanks. Always remember to set up, clean up and pick up your dishes and leftovers.

SUNSHINE Phyllis Salt

It was good having Virgie Lee Shaw back at Ocean

Waves following her recent medical problems. Nancy Bradwell is here from her new home in

Hawaii. She is working at her family's tropical fish booth at the Youth Fair. She will be here until late April and we hope to see her at our next Ocean Waves meeting.

The Friendship Stars enjoyed dinner at Joyce Cotner's

home. The occasion was a visit from Kitty and Jesse Gonzalez. Kitty is busy as usual sharing her love of quilting to members of her two quilt guilds. It is always good seeing friends again.

LOST AND FOUND – MACHINE ACCESSORIES

Kasha Abbott

An electrical cord for a sewing machine, probably a Bernina, was found with the Singer machine inside the rolling tapestry case. It is ½” high with top plug in being rounded, bottom being squared off. It may have been there for a long time. Are you missing your Bernina electrical cord? A Free-Hand-System (FHS) presser foot lifter (knee operated). The presser foot lifter raises and lowers the presser foot by pushing with your knee to the right. This accessory is inserted into the opening in the base plate of an electronic sewing machine – possibly could be a Bernina, Brother, Elna, Janome, etc.

SHOE BOX SWAP April Atlas

Be creative, join in the mysteries, make a block and receive a block! Players bring a filled shoebox to exchange, make a block for the box’s Owner, and return the box at the next guild meeting. Participation is open to any Ocean Waves member. The commitment is month-to-month.

How to play? Each player will create and sew one quilt block 10½ inches square using the fabric contents found in the swapped box. Sewer has free choice of block style, and Sewer may add fabrics to the choices. Sewer pins their name to the block, and returns the box containing the new block at the next meeting. Please use your best skills!

What goes in your Shoebox? 1. Put in one, two, or three pieces of fabric of amounts

sufficient for making one 10 ½ inch square block.

2. Box Owner may not request which block, style, or design of the sewer, but Owner may make one request written on the inside of the box lid, i.e. “no fusing or fabric paints,” or “no Sunbonnet Sue design” or “no brown.”

3. Box Owners should not write their name on the box.

Tie the box closed.

Where? A SHOEBOX SWAP table will be set up near Membership. Upon arrival place your filled shoebox there and give your name to Shoebox Swap manager, Beth French. And she will assign a number to your box. If you worked on a box, return it to Beth who will check it in.

When to Swap? Promptly after the meeting and before refreshments, players will gather at the Swap table. Shoebox manager will direct the swap and record names of each Player and the number of the box taken.

A future suggestion for Players, when you retrieve your own box, you can remove your box’s contents and refill for the next exchange right then, OR you may want to have a second box ready and filled for the next exchange.

Please be respectful of the other Players, follow through with making the block, and don’t forget to return the swapped box promptly the next month.

MY QUITING STORY Joan Vigil

I remember learning to sew very early in Maryland. Mother was a volunteer teacher for the county extension service including the 4-H club. I was watching when my task was learning to use scissors. The scissors seemed to be as large as my arm. I cut everything. When I was in the third grade, mother and my teacher had to do something about my activeness. Mother taught me to embroider and they put a small box in my desk with an embroidery project to keep me busy while I waited for my classmates to finish their work. One day I hid in the attic sewing room and cut all of mother's small pieces of fabric into 3 inch squares. I had seen a quilt and wanted to make one. Mother was furious and I never saw those squares again.

By the time I got to junior high Home Economics, I had a wardrobe of broomstick skirts and blouses. In mother's house there is a newspaper clipping of my awards in clothing construction. I made money for my materials by entering a variety of projects in the county fair. I went on to college and majored in Home Economics then returned to my old high school as a Home Economics teacher. I never quilted until I moved to Miami and someone gave me a large box of pieces of fabric. I made little dresses for my niece and cut the remaining scraps into squares. Mother's idea of sewing was to make clothing. Art just for art sake was not in her vision. Was she ever surprised when she saw what I did with little squares!!! Now where are those lost 3 inch squares?? I even made a rug out of carpet scraps. My dad said "Look, there is a pattern to this." During the years of raising children and teaching school, I managed to make quilts for the three beds in Mothers house which she showed off to her company. I made a quilt for a nephew and my sister was livid when he wrapped his wet dog in it. Everyone has their own sense of value for quilts. I love the Ocean Waves Quilt Group and the variety of interest, techniques, activities, and personalities to which I have been exposed. Thank you. [Photo courtesy Joan Vilgil]

BOOK REVIEWS Karen Dimercurio

1. The Patchwork Pattern Book--- Carter Houck This book has 34 different blocks with each having its own pattern and directions to put them together. There are patterns for quilts big and small, placemats and pincushions as well as bags and more. A good book to go to for gifts like eye glass cases, toaster covers or potholders. This book includes yardage and step by step instructions. 2. Clever Quilts, Making the Most of Panels, Borders and Theme Prints- Susan Teegarden Dissmore If you ever wanted to work with panels or theme prints this is the book that can help you. It gives you ideas to bring splashes of color or patterns together to showcase your theme prints or your panels. It makes a little quilt into a big quilt. 3. Combing Through Your Scraps--- Karen Combs Karen uses light and dark fabric to make Magic when using simple blocks into beautiful quilts. She tells you about tools you can make yourself instead of buying them. She tells you how to use them to see light and dark in your quilts to make them sparkle. 4. Traditional Quilts with Painless Borders--- Sally Schneider and Barbara Eikmeier They make the borders part of the quilt so you add them on as you put the quilts together. The quilts are put together as diagonal sets. They give the measurements and directions to many of the quilts in their book.

COMMUNITY QUILTS Gerry Tucker

It’s Spring! Time goes so fast especially when we are

busy and productive. Our meetings give us so many new ideas and suggestions for projects, I sometimes don’t know where to start.

June will be our next Community Quilt Production Day. So plan now to stay after refreshments to sew, tie quilts and enjoy other guild members. New members will find this a very good time to get to know more members. So mark your calendars now. We don't charge a fee and will have door prizes and maybe chocolates for the mid-afternoon low.

Don't forget Lois Ericson and I are starting an orphan quilt block home. We will take very good care of your orphan blocks.

Monday Sewers will meet April 7 and 21 at 8100 SW 133 Ct., my home. Phone: 305-505-3256. All are welcome, just bring a little something to share for lunch.

Plan, measure, cut and sew! Sew! Sew!

INSPIRATION AROUND US

Leslie Pope

The log cabin program in February had me thinking of houses, so here are some traditional farm houses at a historical exhibit in Iceland. I like the contrast of the dark walls with the white window frame, the blocky stone walls, and then the surprise of a green sod roof. The lines of the roofs and the colors are repeated in the hills behind.

OCEAN WAVES MINUTES February 8, 2014

Meeting called to order by Barb Frazzetto at 9:30 a.m. Announcements: The Embroidery guild has asked for our presentation

and then they will come to us. Barb will give the presentation and is asking for examples of the three types of quilt (traditional, art and modern) and quilts that have hand embroidery on them.

Molly Gonzalez and Yvonne Emmanuelli, our luncheon chair and assistant, have researched sites and presented to the board the best selection – the Elks Lodge on Sunset Road. It will be the third Saturday of January (2015). More details to follow.

LaVerne Johnson has volunteered to do the Chapter Quilt. The kit is being purchased and Laverne will do the cutting and making of block kits to dispense to member volunteers.

Lois Erickson received an email letter from Florida Quilting Outreach a Florida publication requesting articles on what is being done in our guild and groups. She submitted an article about the “Rookies” having a bib-a-thon and sending 45 bibs of varying sizes to Patches. She also sent pictures and got feedback that other groups have already started doing the same. If any groups have any projects they want to highlight, they should forward the information to Lois and she will be our liaison. Lois also has started an “orphan block quilt”. Bring in any random orphan blocks you have to donate and let’s see what we can make!

Sharon Krutulis (membership) announced we had eight Girl Scout Visitors today who were introduced and the other visitors – Nicole Jamison, Shirley Horton, Candy Winfrey and Jessie Bowen. Reminder to pick up 2014 directories in the back of room today.

Sharon also went over the suggestions from our suggestion box as follows: 1) Bringing friends, family, children to guild meetings is allowed. Adults should join after two meetings. 2) Please get to know fellow members, mingle, introduce self, etc. 3) Discussions – there will be a pad of post-it notes on membership desk for any suggestions of topics to discuss at the next guild meeting. Please stick them to front desk for pick up. 4) Should the guild hire a bus for “road trip” “shop hop” etc.? We need a volunteer to look into the feasibility of this – prices, size of bus, distances etc. 5) Virtual quilt show on our website. Deda Maldonado (webmaster) will be happy to set this up, just email her with pictures etc. 6) Send out self-addressed postcards with our donated quilts for feedback. This has been done this past year with the Community quilts and we did not receive one postcard back. 7) Generic Ocean Waves quilt labels that members can use on their quilts. Lois Erickson (Awesome Embroidery) is willing to make these labels and suggests a design contest.

Members voted to send the first donation to WORLD VISION to provide a sewing machine to a third world country. We will also follow up with donations to

Diane Miller’s daughter to buy some machines for a project she works with in Panama. These donations will be funded by the money earned on the Chapter Quilt raffle

Ellen Sherman announced there were several catalogues available from AQS which have fabric as well as books available at a 20% discount.
