WelcomeThe Ocean City Festival, sponsored by Ocean BMW, will once again anchor on our shores in September with a host of activities, events and entertainment for everyone to enjoy.

Working closely with a number of our partners we have been able to provide everything from business and marine science conferences, STEM educational trips for schools, to fun aquatic leisure activities, we even have a cardboard boat race! Launching on the 5 September with the popular Rockfish Blue Mile the festival will run until 27 September and here are a few highlights;• Sailing and Sea Science family fun day• Open Air Cinema• Tinside Lido 80th Anniversary 1930s weekend• Guided boat trips• Aquarium Lates – Sustainable Seafood• Rockpool Rambles with the Beach Rangers....And of course the Plymouth Seafood Festival. Plymouth is the spiritual home of the Blue Mile and this fantastic mass-participation watersports event returns for a fifth year, to open the Ocean City Festival with a splash!

Setting off from the historical Mayflower Steps, this fun and challenging tidal course follows the waterfront into Plymouth Sound and finishes in the heart of the bustling Barbican. Swim, stand-up paddle or kayak the one mile course.

Since medieval times Sutton Harbour has witnessed many world famous historical events. Some of the greatest seafaring adventures have begun from the quayside, including Drake’s circumnavigation of the world aboard the Golden Hind and many of the expeditions to the New World. One of the most famous of these is the epic voyage of the Pilgrim Fathers aboard the Mayflower in 1620. Visit our recently refurbished Mayflower Museum to find out more.

A centrepiece on Plymouth’s Hoe, Smeaton’s Tower is one of the South West’s most well-known landmarks. Originally built on the Eddystone Reef in 1759, it was taken down in the early 1880s. Now standing at 72 foot high it offers fantastic views of Plymouth Sound and beyond from its Lantern Room. Are you brave enough to climb the 93 steps to the top?

Come and see an exhibition that delves more deeply into Plymouth’s portrait collection and presents new research into some of the characters that are new or rarely seen. ‘In the Frame’ features our newest acquisition - an early self-portrait by Plympton-born 18th century artist, Sir Joshua Reynolds. This is set amongst other paintings of well-known local faces and families, artists and maritime greats.

Find out more about the ‘ten dramatic days’ in the summer of 1815 when self-styled French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was imprisoned on HMS Bellerophon in Plymouth Sound. This exhibition is centred on a popular painting from the city’s historic collections depicting this historic event. It also looks at the ship (commonly known as the ‘Billy Ruffian’) and the scenes in the Sound before Napoleon was exiled to the remote Atlantic island of Saint Helena.

The Merchant’s House is Plymouth’s largest surviving example of a 16th/early 17th century residence.

It provides a glimpse into Plymouth’s more recent past with displays about transport, trade, the Blitz and the Victorians – but the first recorded owner was William Parker, a merchant, Mayor of Plymouth from 1601-2 and an infamous Elizabethan privateer!

Come and see this rare surviving example of Plymouth’s history. Originally built in the late 1500s when Plymouth was a prosperous, bustling port, it was rescued from demolition in 1930 and opened as a Museum. Today, you can step inside and see how a merchant or sea captain might have lived in the 1600s with authentic furniture, fabrics, sloping floors and ceilings.

The Elizabethan House is laid out in the style of an historic sea captain’s home, the first recorded owner of the Merchant’s House was an Elizabethan privateer and Smeaton’s Tower was originally built out on the notorious Eddystone Reef!

Shallow Survey Conference Roland Levinsky Building, Plymouth University, PL4 8AA. 14 to 18 September Britain’s Ocean City Plymouth will be the venue for Shallow Survey 2015, the 7th International Conference on High Resolution Surveys in Shallow Water. The UK Hydrographic Office and Maritime and Coastguard Agency are organising this conference in partnership with Plymouth University.

The event attracts professionals from across the international seabed mapping community, who come together to hear and discuss technical papers from leading experts in the field, focusing on data gathered in depths of less than 200m. As well as the conference itself, the Roland Levinsky Building at Plymouth University will welcome a trade exhibition, where companies at the cutting edge of this technology will showcase their products and services.

The Plymouth Seafood Festival is a highlight of the Ocean City Festival programme. In its fourth year it will once again bring the historic Barbican and Sutton Harbour alive with activities and entertainment in a showcase of local seafood produce. The first city in the World to be awarded the coveted status of Fish2Fork Blue City, Plymouth is committed to sourcing sustainable fish.

Quayside MarketAn array of stalls with freshly caught seafood, mainly from our own harbour, will be on display at the Quayside Market throughout the weekend. The festival is a great way to enjoy a fantastic range of seafood, local produce and live entertainment. You will also be able to get hands on with filleting fish and don’t forget to visit the Fish Market on Sutton Harbour’s Heritage Trail. Young Chef of the YearFor the first time we will be running an exciting and rewarding competition for all young and aspiring chefs, where one lucky chef will be crowned Plymouth Seafood Festival’s Young Chef of the Year. Two lucky finalists will go head to head in a cook off on Saturday 26 September at the Cookery Theatre. The overall competition will be judged on Saturday by a panel of esteemed judges and

the winner will be presented with an engraved trophy as well as some fantastic culinary prizes.

Cookery TheatreThe cookery theatre stage will be at the heart of this year’s Plymouth Seafood Festival with a packed programme of demonstrations. Head to The Barbican Parade where you will see local and celebrity chefs showcase the fantastic quality seafood available in Plymouth with a range of mouth-watering dishes using seafood fresh from the boats.

Catch of the DayOn Sunday 27 September at 3pm local fisherman Ben Squire and Sid the Squid will be at The Barbican Parade explaining the species caught and the sustainable fishing methods used.

The Little Nippers Crabbing ContestCheck in at the Boathouse Cafe, the Barbican Wharves at 1pm on Sunday 27 September for the kids crabbing competition. Entrance fee is £6 and includes the crab line, bait and bucket. Official weigh in will take place at 4pm. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the winner and the two runners up at the main stage.

Market Plaice FishmongersFamily run fishmongers, Market Plaice Fishmonger will donate all of their time and proceeds at Plymouth Seafood Festival to the Fisherman’s Mission.
