Scalar Cloud Philosophy
Support multiple clouds, because not all workloads are the same, and not all clouds are the same.

Self-Managed Cloud
Self-management appeals to customers who have the ability to manage their own cloud-based environment, and for whom maintaining full control is preferred. Customers select Scalar as their resale partner of choice, but otherwise access and manage the cloud via the selected cloud provider’s portal.
There are 3 distinct values to purchasing your public cloud resources through Scalar:
Billing Portal: Customer billing portal offering simplified billing and chargeback reporting
Business Support: Scalar-led support and escalation
Payment Terms: Itemized billing with net 30 day payment terms

Managed Cloud
STANDARD - Includes basic deployment and monitoring services with SLO-backed response, and is generally appropriate for non-mission critical workloads.
PREMIUM - Provides a complete monitoring and optimization suite, along with rapid, SLA-backed response suitable for production workloads and other mission-critical environments.
Designed for customers who prefer Scalar provide management of their cloud infrastructure. Scalar provisions and manages cloud resources on the customer’s behalf along with providing access management, 24x7 monitoring and incident response, and continuous optimization. Cloud Management comes in 2 tiers:

Canadian Public Cloud Market
The market in Canada is ramping up quickly and we are seeing an increasing amount of clients with real, tangible workloads running in all public cloud platforms we support.
Data sovereignty was a large barrier (whether real or not is another discussion) that was an inhibitor to public cloud adoption up until about the middle of 2016 when Microsoft Azure came to Canada. Amazon Web Services followed.
With Google Cloud Platform announcing their Canadian region coming this year, it means that the Canadian public cloud market is set, as we strongly believe that the public cloud market will largely consolidate around Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure & Google Cloud Platform.

Cloud DR Models
There are four main DR models when it comes to public cloud, each with increasing levels of complexity & spend as you move down the models:
Cold DR
Pilot Light
Warm Standby
Active/Active

Cloud DR Security
Even though all three large pubic cloud platforms will be resident in Canada by the end of this year, we still see a lot of companies are reticent to use them due to security concerns. There are various ways to encrypt backups both in-transit and at rest:
Client-Side (Encrypt backups prior to sending to the public cloud provider)
Server-Side (Encrypt backups at rest once they are at rest on the public cloud provider’s storage)
In-Transit (Encrypt the transmission of backups via TLS)
Most backup vendor software as well as software provided by the cloud providers themselves support all three of those methods listed above.

The DR Dilemma
Why is disaster recovery a natural fit for cloud?
PROBLEM: If I build DR, the economics are similar to a production environment, but rarely, if ever used. Nobody likes buying insurance!
If I don’t build DR, I fail to address the risk
ANSWER: Cloud offers rapidly deployable resources that are only billable if/when they are used

Target Market
Who is this service for?
1. ‘We have backups, but no DR (lack of DR is an identified risk)’
2. ‘We have a really expensive DR environment that is used infrequently (or never) and we’d like to reduce costs’

Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) with Commvault
Why did we partner with Commvault?
Commvault is a traditional technology partner who are pivoting to become relevant in cloud
Technology:
Live Sync connects Vmware- or Hyper-based private environments to AWS- or Azure-based public clouds
No additional software required to translate workloads
Cloud-based services can remain shut down while not in use
Direct deduplication means reduced storage charges and reduced network usage
Minimize carrying costs when not is use!
Large install base who can identify with the preceding statements

How Does it Work - Commvault
1. Commvault protection operation backups up protected workloads
2. Live Sync operation replicates selected VM’s to AWS/Azure cold standby
3. Aux/dash copy operation creates secondary offsite backup copies
4. Cold DR Commcell is synchronized. DR Commcell is activated in the event primary Commcell is not available for DR restore

How Does it Work - Scalar
Step 1: Setup
Configuration of Livesync for existing Commvault protected workloads
Design, configuration, and implementation of a cloud-based DR environment
Step 2: Monitor
Continuous monitoring of Livesync logs to ensure accurate, ongoing replication between production and DR workloads
Annual test-restores
Step 3: Respond
Initial – Intensive post-declaration support to execute the customer’s DR playbook and rapidly achieve baseline restore (customer can access all DR infrastructure)
Ongoing – Customer workloads are transitioned to Scalar’s Premium Cloud Management Service for the duration of the time they are running in the cloud

Benefits
1. COST EFFECTIVE - Livesync technology allows cloud-based resources to remain shut down when in stand-by mode. This approach dramatically reduces the carrying costs of the DR environment when not in use
2. FULLY MANAGED - When a DR failover is executed, workloads are immediately transitioned to Scalar’s industry-leading cloud management team for the time they remain active in the cloud. Customer’s do not require in-house cloud expertise
3. SECURE - Scalar’s certified Solution Architects design each environment using the best practices for the selected platform
4. SIMPLE - Customers can leverage their existing investment in Backup infrastructure to deliver DR. No additional technologies requires

Modern Data Management
Principles of Modern Data Management
Standards-Based Platform Access: Eliminate obsolescence and provider lock in1
Direct Native Access: Data is available in its native format3
Governance from Inception: Data is managed from when it is born6
Universal Access & Collaboration: Securely share and sync across Apps, Files, Information5
Integrated Data Security: Data is secure in transit, at rest and during access2
Extensible Search and Query: Index, analyze, visualize and optimize data4
Incremental Change Capture: Increased frequency of recovery points drives storage and network efficiency7
