Yellowstone recruiting for 2018 Youth Conservation Corps program MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - How would you like to work, learn, play, and serve in the world’s first national park? Yellowstone is currently recruiting for the 2018 Youth Conservation Corps (YCC), a residential work-based education program for young men and women between the ages of 15 and 18. Visit the YCC program webpage to apply. Completed application materials must be received by March 1, 2018. Two, month-long YCC sessions will be offered June 10 to July 11 and July 15 to August 15. Sixty youth will be selected from across the country to participate in the program. Applicants must be citizens of the United States and 15 years of age by June 10, but not over 18 years of age by August 15. Yellowstone recruits youth from all social, economic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds for the program. No previous wilderness experience is required. Applicants should possess a positive attitude, a willingness and ability to work in a physically active outdoor program, and get along well with others. Participants will be required to live in the park. Room and board will be provided at a minimal cost. Wages will be set at the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. YCC is designed to develop an appreciation for the nation's natural resources and heritage through unique edu-cational, recreational, and work experiences. Corps members work together with National Park Service staff to complete conservation projects such as rehabilitation of trails, campground restoration, and a wide variety of resource management, visitor support services, and maintenance projects. Participants develop their job and leadership skills while further exploring personal values, gaining self-esteem, expanding their awareness of work ethics, and learning firsthand about environmental and conserva-tion issues. Corps members also participate in evening and weekend recreational activities and discover the many options for careers in the National Park Service and other land management agencies. Questions may be directed to [email protected]. The Yellowstone YCC Program is funded by park entrance fees and generous donations to Yellowstone For-ever, the official nonprofit partner of Yellowstone National Park.

A Moving History: Speaker Series Program is about Livingston and the Railroad Livingston, Montana: The Friends of the Yellow-stone Gateway Museum announce their upcoming speaker series, A Moving History, featuring area ex-perts. The four bi-monthly programs begin on Feb-ruary 28 with “The Railroad: Livingston and the Beginnings of a County” presented by Museum Di-rector Paul Shea, and continue through mid-April. Other topics include our area’s native trails, the Yel-lowstone Trail, and traveling along the Lewis & Clark trail. Museum Director Paul Shea shares early photos—some recent donations to the museum and never seen before—and stories of our vibrant histo-ry. The railroad is the reason that Livingston is here, and the arrival of the railroad created the economic development that led to the separation of Park Coun-ty from Gallatin County. Shea has served as director of the Yellowstone Gateway Museum since Decem-ber 2009. Before his move to Livingston, Shea was the founding executive director of the Yellowstone Historic Center in West Yellowstone, a position he held from 1998 to 2008. Paul also oversaw the resto-ration of West Yellowstone’s historic railroad dis-trict. Shea has lived and worked in and around Yel-lowstone National Park since 1979 and is originally from Nevada. Two weeks later, on Wednesday, March 14, historian Jerry Brekke presents “The Big Bend of the Yellowstone Trail Nexus.” On Wednes-day, March 28, graduate history student Lerick Al-len presents “Convicts, Boosters, and Citizens: Park County’s contribution to the Yellowstone Trail” and on Wednesday, April 11, Lewis and Clark historian Norm Miller presents “In the Wake of Discov-ery: Traveling the Lewis and Clark Trail by Canoe and Foot.” Stay tuned for more details about each program. All programs are part of the museum’s Wednesday evening programming, Hump Day His-tory, and are held at 7:00 pm at the Yellowstone Gateway Museum, 118 W. Chinook, Livingston. The speaker series is free and open to the public and re-freshments are served. Doors will open at 6:00 pm for people to enjoy the museum’s exhibits before the program and to grab a seat. Attendees must climb stairs to the top floor of museum for the program. Watch for more information about upcoming pro-grams or contact Karen Reinhart at 222-4184 or [email protected].
