Objective:SWBAT demonstrate

understanding of friction by completing the Marble Roll lab

Warm Up:

Friction

Using F= MA

1.Calculate how much force is needed to make a 10 kg grocery cart accelerate to 3 m/s/s

Announcement

• Your physics test is MAY 12 (A) or MAY 13 (B)

We will review for the test next class

HW: Complete the worksheet to prepare for review

You will receive a study guide next class

Friction: What is it?

• Even if you exert a lot of FORCE on an object, it may not go very far

• FRICTION makes things slow down (think about your balloon cars from last week!)

• Look back at your Newton’s Laws Foldable

WRITE if you do not have this definition

• Friction: the force that resists motion between two surfaces that are pressed together

• You should write down the friction definition if you did not already write it on your Newton’s Law’s foldable

(5-10 minutes) Marble Roll ChallengePart 1

GOAL: Make the marble go the SLOWEST from one end of the table to the other

• Groups of 4

• Planning

• Draw 3 different plans so you know where to start!

Page 6: Objective: SWBAT demonstrate understanding of friction by completing the Marble Roll lab Warm Up: Friction Using F= MA 1.Calculate how much force is needed.

Marble Roll Part 2

• Time to BUILD your marble tracks

1.Build all three tracks (one at a time) and test2. WRITE YOUR TIME TRIALS ON THE BACK OF

YOUR SHEET

Remember, you want your marble to go the SLOWEST, not the fastest!

Compete!

• I will time each team’s marble track

• Remember, you want the SLOWEST time, not the fastest!

• Answer CONCLUSION questions at the bottom of the sheet
