Obituary for Harry Van Ierssel Henricus Cornelis Maria Van Ierssel Harry Van Ierssel died at his home in Kingston, Jamaica, on September 21, 2012. He was born in Ginneken & Bavel, the Netherlands, on July 25, 1936. After receiving his degree in economics from Tilburg University, the Netherlands, in 1958, he migrated to Canada, where he lived and worked in Halifax, Montreal, and Toronto. He married Christina Ingrid Renate Ripselber on December 10, 1963; they later divorced. He became a chartered accountant in 1963, working at Deloitte & Touche and Claritone Sound Corporation Limited. He joined the University of Toronto Press in 1969, worked there for twenty-four years, and retired as vice president of finance in 1993, when he relocated to the United States and later married Linda E. Speth Harry was extremely active in scholarly publishing in Canada, the United States, the Pacific Rim, and the Caribbean. For twenty years, he prepared the statistical survey for the Association of American University Presses, and over his career he served as treasurer or secretary for the Association of Canadian Publishers, the Canadian Book Council, the Association of American University Presses, and the Book Industry Association of Jamaica. In 1992, he became the second recipient of the Constituency Award from the Association of American University Presses. Following his retirement from the University of Toronto Press, he engaged in an active consulting career and worked with several scholarly book publishers worldwide. An avid traveler, gardener, and philatelist, Harry loved life, spicy foods, animals, and opera. Fluent in Dutch and English, with conversational ability in French and German, he enjoyed meeting people from many diverse cultures and had homes in both Kingston, Jamaica, and Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was an active volunteer and quiet philanthropist and supported numerous civic, educational and social organizations and is remembered by many for his humour, kindness and mentoring.

He is survived by his wife Linda Van Ierssel, Jamaica; his beloved children Marcus and Jacquie Van Ierssel, Canada; his three grandchildren Sebastian, Aidan, and Ava Grace Minnes, Canada; and his beloved sisters Mieke Van Ierssel and Josee Mohl, the Netherlands.

A memorial service will be held in the Netherlands, and any donations to celebrate his life can be made to the Humane Society or to any cause supporting literacy.
