Purpose of CuringCuring is done to protect freshly skinned hides from a�ack by bacteria. There are many methods to follow. Remember, however, that a delay in curing will result in disappoint-ment: it takes only six hours for bacteria to destroy the root hair, causing hair slip.

MethodSkin the animal as soon as posisble. Remove all excess fat, blood and meat from the hide. Wash o ffall blood and dirt. If possible, soak the hide for a minimum of 3 hours, or overnight, in a saturated salt solu�on, together with a bactericide (De�ol). The ra�o is +/- 20 kg salt and 50 ml bactericide per 100l water. As you remove the hide from the solu�on, open and fla�en the hide on a clean surface of salt with the flesh facing upwards. Cover the hide liberally with salt.

HintsIt is important, as a guideline, to use the same weight of salt as the weight of the hide. The hide must then lie in the salt for at least three days, a�er which �me the hide should be dried out. You may also dry your hide in the sun a�er the sal�ng process. The sooner the hide is dehydrated, the be�er. If you do not have �me to do this, then salt the hide with salt, roll it up, refrigerate if possible, and dry it out at des�na�on ASAP.

Do Not• Do not drag the animal or leave it in the sun a�er it has been shot.• Do not salt hide that has already started to dehydrate. Soak the hide in a strong salt solu�on overnight, and then salt the hide.• Do not leave blood, fat or flesh on the hide (salt does not penetrate fat).• Do not store in a plas�c bag (preferably a hessian bag), except for transporta�on in a cooler container.

ImportantBuffalo Skins all get sided (they are cut in half along the backbone), in order to process them through our spli�ng machines. If the skin is not sided, it will move unevenly through the spli�ng machine and will get severely damaged.

This has been a common pra�ce for many years. The same will apply to Hippo, Elephant and Rhino skins, which will also get sided and pannelled.

Some of our game hides include those of Kudu, Springbuck, Blesbuck, Red Hartebeest, Gemsbuck, Impala, Blue Wildebeest, Elephant and Buffalo. Zebra tanning is our speciality. We export our products as far as Europe, the United States, Australia, the Middle East and the Far East. Oasis is not only responsible for tanning exo�c hides, but also produces a wide range of leather products.

Oasis has pushed the tradi�onal boundaries of tanning and colouring of hides, through which we have become a source of inspira�on to many local designers and decorators. In the manufacturing depart-ment, items such as o�omans, cushions, gun bags and a range of handbags can be made to order.
